Surprises about Planned Parenthood cancer testing

Planned Parenthood, as this AP story explains, doesn't actually do mammograms, but refers women out to other sources. Which raises the question: Why is Planned Parenthood accepting any money for mammograms? Doesn't that make them "middlemen?" Shouldn't money contributed to Planned Parenthood for mammograms go directly to providers? Wouldn't that be more efficient use of contributors' money Isn't that  why the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund stopped making those nearly $700,000 donations to Planned Parenthood.

  • You would think. It's all about money and sex.

  • The money is donated for breast cancer screening. Everyone assumes this means a mammogram. Breast cancer screening includes a thorough exam by a licensed physician who knows exactly how to do an exam to find lumps. Surprisingly, there are many women who never do self exams.

Prior to writing my blog about this subject a few days ago, I called a number of PP offices to inquire. When a woman has an exam (screening) at PP if there is a lump or anything suspicious found, they are referred to an associated clinic for a mammogram. Often times financial assistance is provided.

I had breast cancer, which was discovered in a "screening", not a mammogram. This attack on PP needs to end. They offer valuable assistance to those that cannot afford health care and as such, have saved many lives. Early detection is critical. They offer the means for that.
