Is Quinn rigging the job numbers?

Possibly so, according to this report from Illinois Statehouse News.

  • One of the things mentioned there, and reported elsewhere, was that Quinn was in Rochelle to announce some sort of subsidy so that Nippon Sharyo-Sumitomo would construct a rail car assembly plant there.

Of course, those Japanese firms have the contract to construct Metra cars to be paid by capital bill bonds, 1/4th of the proceeds of which have been disbursed to Metra. The last about 300 cars those companies furnished Metra were assembled in Milwaukee.

So, if Quinn actually succeeded in getting Illinois capital bond programs spent in Illinois, that would be an improvement. However, I'll believe it when I see it. Since Pace has indicated in its budget that money from that source must be spent on "green buses," maybe Quinn can also get a bus assembler to locate here, too. I wouldn't bet on that, either.
