Conservatives coming around to Mark Kirk

The view from inside the Beltway:

Illinois Rep. Mark Steven Kirk hopes he is going to be part of a GOP trend in which moderate Republicans beat the odds in decidedly blue states.

Based on the warm reception conservative party chairmen gave the GOP Senate candidate last week during the Illinois State Fair, the Illinois Republican could do just that against his Democratic opponent, state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias.

“How good did you feel when [Republican Sen.] Scott Brown was elected? I would say don’t let Massachusetts voters have all the fun,” Kirk said while speaking at a breakfast attended by GOP candidates and county chairmen at the Northfield Inn in Springfield on Aug. 19.

  • Whoever wrote the article messed up, since she said that Pat Quinn was the GOP chairman, not Pat Brady. Of course, Bill Brady is a candidate. Too many people with too similar names.

It also seems like most of the article was what Durbin said was going to be the Republican strategy, not what the conservatives say.

So, unless conservatives want to back the Green Party candidate (who I previously said is not your cup of tea), they have to decide whether they want the nothing that Giannoulias brings to the table, and thus either vote for him or not oppose him, as opposed to Kirk's moderation. Those who have dumped in their pants over the resume inflation have already made up their minds, as indicated in at least another Chicago Now blogger's post, so the rest of us have to, too. Since I am pretty fixed in my ways, I'll early vote and hope nothing happens in the intervening month.

  • As an update: Clout Street reports that a Libertarian made the ballot, and a search for that candidate's name Labno indicates that Alexi is already counting on him to split the Republican vote.

  • What a choice! A Crook-Liberal or a Liar-RINO??? I'm one Republican who will be saying NO to Mark Kirk. Although I won't vote for the crook either, maybe I'll vote Libertarian!
