A step backward on Illinois' Freedom of Information Act

The Senate has passed and sent on to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature a new law that weakens the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by forbidding the state or any unit of local government from disclosing a public employee's job evaluation.

Under existing law, a unit of government could in some circumstances, decide to make work record available for the public to see, but now cities and other units of local government will be barred from doing so.
As this informative editorial in the State Journal-Register notes, Quinn would be violating his own pledge for more open government if he signs this bill. This editorial also provides a useful example of why disclosure of works record sometimes is important.
There's no other reason for this law to be enacted than the pressure that public employee unions have brought to bear on lawmakers. Just once, would lawmakers tell the unions to take a walk?

  • Quinn is no reformer and never has been. His whole persona has been nothing but a very cleverly crafted ploy. He is and always has been a machine hack.

  • again, the last people you want to make the rules are making the rules.all i can say is REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER. we need new people in and when they don't listen we'll vote them out also.
