A big sigh of relief for the Sun-Times

From the Tribune's media columnist, Phil Rosenthal, comes an update on the Chicago Sun-Times, the Tribune's partner in bankruptcy, but whose closing seemed imminent not long ago.

Rosenthal describes a newspaper that is on a financially sounder basis, though at great sacrifice by the employees who gave up a bunch of benefits. (Would that the state's public employee unions were as realistic in the relationship with the all-but-bankrupt Illinois.)
The Sun-Times' backing away from the brink doesn't confirm that the future of newspapers is solid. Nor does it resolve the endless (and useless) fight between the "new" and "old."  But we in Chicago should be happy and proud of the people at the paper who are doing their damnedest to keep the city a two-newspaper town. Bravo.

  • What some posters there and you missed is that the Sun-Times is no longer in bankruptcy, at least the 100 papers. Tyree and group bought them out. While that doesn't guarantee readership, at least they have a source of capital.

On the other hand, the last I heard, the Tribune was still in bankruptcy. Zell hadn't turned it over to the banks, and creditors are still pursuing fraudulent conveyance claims. At least according to the Tribune.
