So long, Blackhawk restaurant

Memorabilia from the Blackhawk

Another Chicago icon passes, as the last Don Roth's Blackhawk restaurant announces that it closing. One Blackhawk or another has been in the Chicago area for 90 years, and the last one has been in Wheeling for the past 40 years.

Long one of the most recognizable names on the restaurant and entertainment scene, it always was good for great steaks and its famous "spinning bowl" salad. The first Blackhawk, closed years ago, was on Wabash Ave. and was known for the celebrities who visited. The Wheeling Blackhawk is probably the only place you could see a picture of a young Chicago gossip columnist Irv Kupcinet hobnobbing at the restaurant with the likes of a Frank Sinatra.

I was just there a few weeks ago, celebrating birthdays with my children and son-in-law. You folks at the Blackhawk will be missed. Best wishes for your futures in these tough times. My thanks to the owners and staff for providng this wonderful experience.

  • Wow! Something you are not wrong about. Kudos to you! And thanks for the memories Blackhawk.

  • R.I.P. Especially the original on Wabash where Joan and I can trace back to the early 40s for the big bands. Then the 50s and 60s whenever we were at Fields. They can close the place, but not kill the memories...! Glad you took the time...!
