Competition for ChicagoNow?

Former Tribune editors to supply New York Times with Chicago content | Crain's Chicago Business

(Crain's) -- Former Chicago Tribune newsroom managers have created a venture that is making its debut in local editions of the New York Times.

The Chicago News Cooperative will provide two pages of local content, primarily political news, in the Friday and Sunday editions of the New York Times starting Nov. 20.

Gee, I don't know; I don't think I'll be turning to the New York Times for Chicago news. It's nice that this new enterprise has attracted foundation support and a little-profit or non-profit endeavor. But I'd think to succeed, it will have to prove that it has a market here.

I wish them well; the more voices in and from Chicago, the better

  • Given you headline, of course it isn't competition for ChicagoNow, as the latter does not represent to be the news, but a blog.* Whether it is competition for, which purports to publish news, may be a different story.

The issue, of course, is whether the real life Rick Redferns can make a living in these kinds of ventures.
*Although the Tribune has picked up stories that started on other enthusiasts' forums, then picked up by a related ChicagoNow blog, and finally by the Tribune from that blog. The best example was the CTA "deferring" a New Flyer bus order, which first turned up in Chicago on, then the CTA Tattler referred to that source, and finally Hilkevitch (that intrepid investigator--not) asked Noelle Gaffney about it. Of course, that contract still isn't in the CTA's awards database. So, it exists, but doesn't.
