Stroger's Cook County sales tax remains!

And you thought that Todd Stroger was Chuckles the Clown. Somehow (anyone have a guess?) he (or someone) persuaded Commissioner Deborah Sims to reverse her previous support of a rollback. Now she says she's against the rollback because she doesn't know what it will mean.

Story here in the Sun-Times

  • It just pains me that our local politicians lack the courage of their convictions, if they ever had any, to help the voters of Cook County who are under the ever increasing burden of higher taxes.

  • You knew they were going to find some way to uphold that idiot. First there was the kvetching whether Mell would appoint a replacement commissioner in time, and when he did, and the editorial writers had a sigh of relief, Sims flips for the 20th or so time.

As I have said many times before, the Tribune Editorial Board hasn't figured out that people who do not pay taxes don't have the incentive to vote out those like the four that voted to uphold the veto today.

Also, apparently the General Assembly doesn't have the backbone to amend the law that requires 14 out of 17 to override a veto. 60% or 66% is enough in any other form of government.

At least, this has been kept on the burner, so maybe Todd will realize that he'll be voted out in the February primary, unless he can so fragment his voting base, but I think Danny Davis will prevent that from happening.
