Sox on vacation

The Tribune reports:

Hitting coach Greg Walker hopes his hitters will take care of any medical procedures as

soon as possible so they can be ready when spring training starts in mid-February.

"Don't wait a month because you're tired and ready to go home and go on vacation," Walker said. "Take care of it as soon as you possibly can so we can go to work." [My emphasis]

Hopes? Hopes! You mean that these expensive players under contract have the choice of whether they will do what is necessary to maintain the skills that they're being paid for? Hope about pitching coach Greg Walker telling these buttheads that they had better take of what they need to do, or they're gone?

  • Greg Walker is the hitting coach, and you said pitching coach.

Also, unless there is something in their contract, what authority would Walk (certainly) or the Sox have over the players' bodies and decisions whether to go under the knife?

Remember all the talk about whether Wood and Prior should have been shut down and undergone surgery in the middle of the season or after it? Apparently, not even the almighty Tribune Company could force that decision on them.
