According to the Five Principles of Ethical Journalism - Ethical Journalism Network SPJ Code of Ethics.
“Members of the Society of Professional Journalists believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. Ethical journalism strives to ensure the free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. An ethical journalist acts with integrity.”
Well, it is evident that some publications do not follow the same code of ethics. In a recent article posted by Maya Dukmasova; an amateur journalist for a blog in Chicago, she took aim at front runner for the 20th Ward Alderman race, Committeeman Kevin Bailey. Bailey who was referred to in the article as a tall man with an athletic build and dreads (dreads is a racist term used as short for dreadful-see video below). Not sure why his hair or body type was made mention in the article but it appears she was alluding to a racist agenda in efforts to discriminate him as a viable candidate due to his appearance. In truth, Bailey doesn’t have Locs, he has twist. It was equally in bad taste due to the fact a white woman recently caught backlash in the headlines for cutting the locs of a student on camera. A few posters also called the blogger a racist and suggested she was paid to smear Bailey. The article lacked much factual information and was filled with over 2000 words of hearsay. The blogger also made several edits and corrections once the article went live further diminishing her credibility.
The blogger, Dukmasova also made a statement that Bailey has a “HABIT” of reminding people that he’s a civil engineer and I noticed; readers found her statement ignorant, patronizing, and snobbish.
In my professional opinion, using the word “REMINDING” people would leave one to assume that he repeats this information to the same individuals each and every time he speaks. That is not the case. Her comment is ignorant, patronizing, and snobbish. Yes, he is an EDUCATED BLACK MAN who has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois, he speaks several languages, and travels the world for business and for pleasure to name just a few things about this candidate that shall be repeated throughout his candidacy as it relates to his ability to run and build the 20th Ward.
It’s also worth noting, the bland Russian junior journalist failed to mention Bailey’s Community Resource Center that he pays for out of his pocket to serves as a safe haven and home of the Champions Kevin Bailey Cheerdance Team, small business and career coaching for residents, eviction assistance, acting classes with blockbuster movie actors, his commitment to Lupus research and so much more. Dukmasova, also neglected to mention that Bailey was recently (2018) noted in Black Enterprise as one of their 100 BE Modern Men of Distinction, or a Global Honoree for Weatle Peart, or even a $5000 scholarship he granted to the young 12-year-old college graduate to continue her Masters in engineering. Perhaps he mentions his Civil Engineering trade as a means to empower others and clearly he’s walking the walk by pouring into the youth.
It's also worth noting his stance on Mental Illness and how he partners with Hollywood celebrities to help bring the message to the masses.
Despite attacks against his family, the false claims of campaign donations from the Governor-Elect, the slander and name calling from emotional and less than polished opponents, questionable campaign contributions from gentrifiers to many of the same opponents, and the questioning his integrity; Bailey said his focus is on the issues in the 20th Ward and not petty gossip from blog sites.
Stay tuned... more to follow. In my next article, I will address how ONE candidate reached out to help Bailey with his petition challenges. I have the receipts.
In the meantime; more receipts....
Since the unknown blogger failed to research the true meaning of dreads and why it’s offensive....
