As most fisherman have already discovered, many lakes and ponds here in Northern Illinois were subject to fish kills. When long cold winters create unusually thick ice, it deprives the fish of oxygen causing massive die-offs, or fish kills. Milliken Lake in Wilmington, which is only 10-12 feet deep, experienced a total fish kill this spring. So the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has closed the lake until they can restock it and bring the fish populations back to sustainable, fishable levels. As of press time, the IDNR has not announced when the lake will be open again for public access.
