It's almost summertime, and that means we will have many lazy dog days to fill hours upon hours with pages upon pages of reading, right? In a perfect world, yes, that would be the case! However, because the hours of our days are limited, we probably don't have a ton of time to filter through different book lists and the like, so I've decided to put together a list of the top three books I've read this year--the kind that you go through in a matter of hours or days because you just can't find time to put them down, you know? They're all Christian nonfiction (my favorite literary genre :)) and have all changed my life. Here they are!:
Embracing the Love of God by James Bryan Smith
This book was a gift to me from a friend during college, and walks through three elements of God's love for us: First, Knowing God's Acceptance; second, Receiving God's Forgiveness; and third, Experiencing God's Care. With lots of personal anecdotes and theological reflection, this one is a must-read for spiritual care and formation.
So Long, Insecurity: You've Been a Bad Friend to Us by Beth Moore
This book changed my life--we've likely all heard the phrase "Comparison is the thief of joy," but this book takes it and runs with it, applying practical tips to how we can get out of the trap of comparing ourselves and our lives to others' "highlight reels." HUGE win.
The Bible on YouVersion (audio/listening version)
There is something about listening to a dramatic reading of Judges or Ezekiel that makes it that much more compelling than reading it off of paper, or on a cell phone screen. Don't get me wrong, I do love sitting down and reading the Word of God, but I will say, when I'm cooking, cleaning, exercising, driving, or any other "active" activity that requires most of my attention, I love listening through books of the Bible on my phone. YouVersion is a free app (actually, the most popular Bible app in the world--Fox News just reported there are nearly 225 million installs of it on smartphones worldwide) that comes with hundreds of Bible translations with different narrators for each translation (New International Version, English Standard Version, The Message, etc.). It's an awesome way to spend time!
