The Wheaton College Women's Club Lacrosse team has been in existence for several years now, and is on track to gain varsity status in a couple of years. According to a recent article in USA Today, it is one of many college lacrosse programs currently being developed at DIII colleges across the Midwest, and made a name for themselves last weekend when they won two games to catapult them into the Midwest Regional playoffs this weekend - for the first time in team history.
Big deal, you might be saying - DIII club sports? Wheaton, Illinois? Psh. BUT - what you DON'T know - is that these ladies pulled off two wins back-to-back with NO SUBSTITUTE PLAYERS and no official coach - just me yelling obnoxiously from the sidelines. What's more is that the team actually played one down. So, there weren't even the full 12 players on the field, and they still managed to pull off two wins to take them to playoffs this weekend. After two wins last Saturday at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. (22-5 against Knox, 16-15 against St. Louis University), they will be hitting the road to the Ohio State University tonight to take on the next tier of DIII club sport competition.
I had the good fortune to play with the team for three years during my undergraduate career as goalie, but now I have graduated and will be driving the team six hours to OSU today where we will be attempting to gain another round of victories, and pave the way for more varsity programs to be implemented and developed across the Midwest.
UP, UP, WHEATON!!!
"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand."
