So on Saturday night the Blackhawks get nine goalshungon them by Edmonton. They've lost two in a row to teams that were trending in a bad way, allowing 14 goals in the two games.
Remember the number 14.
On Sunday, just to make Chicago fans need a 12 step program a little more, Jay Cutler's regular season ended with a broken thumb. He's expected to miss between six and eight weeks.
Why did we remember the number 14? That's the number of career pass attempts for Cutler's back-up, Caleb Hanie.
The Bulls are locked out, the Hawks took a dump two nights in a row, and now this? It's hard to remember a more devastating weekend across the board in Chicago sports.
Certainly not all is lost. The Blackhawks are still tied for the most points in the NHL, and the Bears' schedule lines up that they should (hopefully) be able to win two or three of their remaining games and squeak into the playoffs. If Cutler can come back for the postseason, then who knows what can happen.
But for tonight, I'm struggling to find a smile.
