Cincinnati Bengals at Chicago Bears Game Thread

Cincinnati Bengals at Chicago Bears Game Thread

It is the Sanzenbacher Bowl at Soldier Field!

Two final thoughts heading into the ballgame:

  • Hard not to feel great for Marc Trestman today as he finally realizes his dream of being an NFL head coach. Would imagine he'll be quite emotional as the game kicks off.
  • I wonder if the news of a resurgent Devin Hester will lead to Marvin Lewis avoiding him right from the opening whistle. Will the Bengals test the Skunk and see if the electricity is still there? Or will they boot the ball out of bounds and take their chances against a developing Trestman/Cutler offense?
  • For a team with a new head coach and a crop of rookies on the roster the Bears have a surprisingly few number of question marks heading into the opener. It seems they have things well sorted. Now we find out if they have been sorted correctly.

And because it's tradition...

  • It's been a long summer of pain and shitty baseball but the path to glory begins today!

    Bear the fuck down!

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

22 days til the start of the Blackhawks season!

  • Seriously? Is it really time for real FB or is this one of my many offseason dreams and when I wake it'll still be April?

  • fb_avatar

I have game day jitters. 5 hours to kill. Can't start drinking yet...

    Bears 31-14.

    Bear the Fuck down!!!

  • In reply to Big Mike:

... that's not to say weed and painkillers are out of the question Mike.
Start drinking later on (if Cutler's contract is being shelved, Giovanni's star is unleashed and Geno Atkins is getting masturbated about by the commentary team)

    Bear Down.

and the Comment approval system is why I won't be back today. Appreciate everyone here. Jeff writes a great blog. The people who comment on this blog, make this my favorite online Bears community. But the tech, is just not meant for a game day. It barely can keep us a blog.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Agreed, Big Mike, enjoy this game day. Down some brews, and Bear the fuck down!!

  • Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
    As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
    Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
    Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
    Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
    That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'Bear Down!' for Chicago, her fans, and George Halas!'

  • Request form:

    Plenty of running-strateegery
At least 6 balls to Martellus in the middle
Quick-fire offense and quick to snap.
Bench Garza as soon as he's getting owned.
    Defensive blitzing up the kazoo.

We went 10-6 before winning our first and only Lombardi. Let's go 15-1 again. Jay Cutler to throw Eight TD passes today. Aim high strike big.

    GO BEARS!!!

  • Sound good to me. Let's do this thing!

    Bear The Fuck Down!!!

  • I awoke this morning and heard the familiar sounds of a wife and two kids downstairs. I brushed my teeth and looked at myself in the mirror. I look tired. I look haggard today....

I walk downstairs to my 3yr old girl screaming "Jaaaaayyyy Cuttttleeeerrrr!!!!!!" and I look over to my almost two year old son wearing a cutler jersey t shirt. He's laying on top of my wife on his back and is engrossed in Little Einsteins , just pounding his bottle of milk. He stops briefly, looks over and gives one single nod to me and that's that. The nod said it all, "time for battle dad".

    It begins.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I love me the smell of football in the morning!

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

That was the perfect clip to start the day and in fitting NFL fashion the clip was preceeded by a Geico advertisment before I could watch the NFL clip!!!!

  • Love you guys on game day. Makes all the work worth it.

Going to be putting a chat system in place to operate on game days. You'll be able to basically IM each other instead of the comment process. Just give me some time.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

*That* would be great, Jeff. If it's usable on my phone, that is.

It will be off to the Alehouse with my progeny for communal shouting at the television along with 20-30 other Bears fans. Getting amped for this one now.

    Game on.

Bear down, lads and lasses. We're in for quite the ride this year.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

This would be a very nice thing to have.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

You mean you'll be installing it on the new site?

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

... and where is Jefe watching the game? Plug that shit for free servings.

  • I'm guessing he's watching at Josie's bar in Jersey or New York.

  • Quick Butkus clip:

"To talk about him, is to drain the vocabulary of superlatives......"

  • In reply to Waffle:

I love the Deacon Jones comment.

"When Dick hit you, he tried to put you in the cemetery, not the Hospital."

  • In reply to Waffle:

Here is some more... some of the same high lights, but also some nice footage of shedding blocks, or not bothering and just pounding the guy.

  • ladies and gents: it's go time. Bear Down.

  • My son is a year and 10 months. he just successfully took Inception out of it's case, put it in the dvd player and......then pushed another button which put on the sexy spanish dancing shows on regular tv right when my wife walked in. Made me look like a perv. thanks little man.

  • Game Day, bitches!!!!!!

  • Doc, I got this shirt on under my Briggs jersey. Got it at a show eons ago.

  • In reply to Cormonster:

That's awesome. I'm wearing my Peanut Punch t-shirt under my Walter jersey.

My wife bought me this a long time ago:

  • Now THAT is awesome! I think that was their last show. A bunch of my friends were there, but I couldn't make it.

  • And now, a word from our sponsor...
Here we are, folks, "Tis the Season"
    Work out all the signals...
Screw the pundits, throw out reason...
Now go out and BEAT THOSE BENGALS!

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Right on, Al!

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Bear down! I knew you would come through with a burma shave add this morning Al!

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Go, Al, GO!

  • Put up, or shut up time.

All the handjobs in the world aren't as good as the real thing. Time for all the fluffers to be put aside as we're going in for the real thing.

OK, that was way more sexually charged than intended, suffice it to say,

    Bears 217, Bengals -3

  • Sanzenbacher inactive. Wadda shame.

    In reply to DYLbear23:

Glad the kid made their squad.

  • 34 - 17 Bears.

    That is all.

  • Dan Marino and Boomer are teabagging Jay Cutler.

"He's nothing more than this generation's Jeff George. That's all he is. "

"I doubt many of the Bears have bought into him as the leader."

Payback is a mofo, Jay. Let's see who you are.

  • In reply to gpldan:

dang. Marino, Ganon, Simms, Esiason just gangbanged Culter on 4 split screen. Unanimous. NO MORE EXCUSES.

    - Butch tweet, biatches

  • In reply to gpldan:

One Lombardi puts you ahead of Marino Jay, let's go.

  • Wow, cbs crew was rough on #6, hurling all the usual cliches at him including the Jeff George comparison. The only person who seemed to believe was Phil Simms, I've heard Phil's opinion before so I wasn't surprised. But Marino, Cowher, and Boomer-ouch.

After all that it'd be nice to see our boy come out and light it up today. Haters.

  • Space Mountain!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's Gooooooooo!!! I have no idea how I'm going to watch the game in Jersey, but whatever. Bear Down!!

  • Hey Jeff, you are more than welcomed to email me about the chat I use on PFN. It's fast, free, and I know you can put it on your post. However, I think the problem lies with Chicago Now.

If you guys want, you are more than welcomed to come hang out with Chet and I live chat-

  • THIS.

  • Can't. Fucking. Wait.

Cutty begins his journey today. He finally gets to play chess again instead of checkers. I can't wait to hear all the cocksuckers on the Score tomorrow eating their Crow whole.

I think I'm just as excited to watch Mel call this D. Were going to see some shit we're not used to seeing.

    Can't . Fucking. Wait.

  • Did that Alshon play not look challenge-worthy? Can't really tell on my crappy feed.

  • UNICORNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!

    fuck you Kellen Davis

  • Prepare to be screwed by replay.

  • Ive been thoroughly unimpressed by Martellus Bennetts hands and then he makes that catch for a touchdown. Will the real black unicorn please step forward!

  • Irish - we are over here

  • Dammit I hate this administrator approval crap! Come on Jeff, you told us new blog after the first of the year, then after the draft.....before you know it's gonna be a year since your "big announcement" Is it or is it not happening?

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Go to Artoo's live chat, Murph. UP THERE.

  • In reply to NY Bears Fan:

You don't need to register for the chat, I don't think. Murph, NB, MB, Shady, Canada, etc made it fine over there.

I use Adblock plus and Better Privacy add-ons, and I had no problem.

Not sure about registering though. That might just be a Wordpress issue (don't think you can have adblock plus on for them), but just to make a temporary name and chat not needed.

Anywho, until Jeff installs a live chat, I'm over there on game days.

  • You don't have to sign up for anything. In fact, you could just be anonymous.

    It's really, really simple.

  • DirecTV/Madden thing was a bit cryptic to set up, but it's working pretty well. A lot better than pirated streams.

Green should've been called for that Offensive PI against Peanut; game would be 7-3.

Bears' O looking a bit anxious, but pretty decent considering Cincy's D-line is so good. If not for some drops, Cutty's numbers would be even better already.

  • Dline being dominated is the story so far

  • 58-yarder. Way to go Robbie. Wow.

  • Holy fuck Robbie!! That would've been good for an nfl record...65 at least...LOVE IT.... He can talk as much punk crap as he wants if he keeps hittin those like that! Damn

  • Bear down. I feel like all the bounces in the first half have gone the Bears way, and we're down by 4. Unsettling.

  • Feeling OK... now we'll get to see what halftime adjustments look like...God knows we never saw them with Lovie...The Bears will gel... I want to see our D step up though, a little concerning, but then again, A.J. is the only guy torching us...

  • Dline being absolutely DOMINATED by cincy. The rest is academic

  • 4 yard run to the 1 yard line for Kyle Long.

  • We've had every break this game. D has to improve next week, but overall I liked what I saw from the offense and 0 sacks is always a bonus.

  • Yo Irish. Still worried about Geno Atkins? Was he even there today?

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

Overall, the Cincy d-line was very quiet. A solid, workmanlike performance by the O-line. How *good* it feels to write that.

  • Job done.

  • Trestman out-coached and out-prepared Marvin Lewis. Period.

The team stayed poised and Jay and Brandon deliver the storybook finish. Bush up the middle seals the clock and the Bengals actually got away with having 12 men on one play, but Vontaze calls their last timeout and that's a wrap.

The roughness call on Mills at the end, that was the emphasis on the point: Lewis doesn't have them disciplined and is relying on assembling the biggest, baddest thugs to out-physical other teams. It nearly worked, but in the end, they beat themselves.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    1-0 Baby!!!!!!!!

And how bout that for second half adjustments? So refreshing.

  • That's exactly what I was thinking, the definition between the previous regime and Emery/Trestman. Adapt and overcome, and I love it , Nitty.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I called 27-24 with a Gould FG to win it. Same story but 24-21.

I also called 2 3rd Phase TDs and was wrong about that. Hester looks indecisive and his first step explosion is gone. The hunger looks gone. But they still kicked away from him, so his reputation is in tact.

While I liked Earl and Henry showing up, and liked Earl's catch on the slant - I think we are going to experiment with Wilson or somebody else that can disrupt the zones as the 3rd wideout. I think Jay made that call he wanted Earl out there.

Alshon, Brandon and Big Bennett the TE are formidable wideouts.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I mentioned that in the chat before I left to focus on the game - the Bengals are still full of idiots with no self control. Never had any discipline under Lewis, never will.

  • I would like to take this opportunity to thank the bengals for handing the Bears this game on a silver platter.

Malauuga. That must translate into English as "Incredibly Stupid."

I am so going to enjoy listening to the replay of this game on BENGALS Radio via NFL Audio.

  • We just beat a team most feel will be in the Super Bowl.

  • In reply to gpldan:

"Most" are putting Denver against either San Fran or Seattle.

We just beat a team most are putting in the playoffs. I rank this year's Bengals with last year's Texans. We hung with the Bengals a lot better than the we hung with the Texans.

  • Cutler didn't get sacked. Imagine what they'll do with more time and ordinary defensive fronts.

  • Watching the Lions/Vikes ending and man those 'updated' uniforms for both teams suck even more than the older versions.

  • Like...WOWzers Man.....hope this is a trend of what we see all year!!!! Offense blocking was PRETTY DARN GOOD!!!!!

  • What is with the comment review crap...when did that start?

  • In reply to MaddBearfan:

    Months ago....

  • In reply to MaddBearfan:

You must not be posting enough. I get it every comment. As do a lot of the others gathering from comments.

  • In reply to MaddBearfan:

I think it means you're on some sort of Terrorist watch list.

  • Wow

  • Anyone watchin fudge? Niners about to taste first blood.

  • Bears Win!

  • fb_avatar

  • Jon Scot was waved and Hester kept a roster spot. We got rid of a swing tackle to keep a return man who seems uninterested in returning the ball. Nearly every kickoff will got to the end line or beyon, so its pretty much just punts. Emery's biggest mistake to date in my opinion.

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

I was going to ask how hester did.

One more game hester you POS, then you're done. Common emery, cut his fucking dumb ass.

Oh, did I mention that Lacy is fat... but looks like a fucking bulldozer

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to MB30SD:

hester is no dumbass, really!! he is the best returner ever to play whatever.

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

They're kicking the ball out of the end zone to avoid Hester and you're complaining? And didn't we start one drive on like the 40 yard line because they kicked it away?

He had one good KR and one bad PR. Not enough data to see if he's still got it. But the Bengals certainly treated him like he does.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

The correct assessment of Hester's performance today. Thanks for injecting a sane post on Devin.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

  • didn't see a single down.

I must be out of my fucking mind cause i took my 4.5 and 3 year old to legoland in almost 90 degree weather today. My god.

Anyway... nice to see we pulled it off.

Lastly, I am watching the GB/SF game. I have one thing to say...

remember when I wanted to do whatever it took to get anquan b. on the team before he went to the ravens?

Yeah, well uhhhh.... Can you guys fucking imagine having Bmarsh on one side and anquan B on the other? Ho-ly-sheite muslim!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

You were not alone, my friend. Always been a big fan of his.

  • BOOM!

Packers about to get scored on again

  • oh fine. I finally get my kids down collapse on the couch and you all left me here alone!?!

and yes, it IS all about me right now.

At least doc texted me... with his... CELL phone!?!?!? Yay Doc!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Hester was useless. O and D looked shaky in the first half but really came together to close out the last quarter and a half. Did I mention Cutler didn't get sacked? By the Bengals? And you'll be happy to hear that Trestman diagnosed the Bengals and out coached Marv in the second half. No way the Bears win that game a year ago.

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

    awesome, thanks johnny.

Yeah, doc said the same thing. Shocking isn't it?!

    God I hate lovie.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

No presnap penalties either. 2 TOs in the first half to prevent delay of game or bs plays.

Our pass rush was almost none existent though. That's not a good trend.

  • nice... and, that sucks.

btw, please change your avatar... it scares me.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Emery says...too bad. Suck it up.

It was odd. All anyone talked about pregame were the dlines of Bengals and Bears, and the olines outperformed on both sides.

Keep in mind that their starting LT was out too. No Bueno.

This allowed double moves against our secondary, which were effective because they were jumping on those short routes.

A good pass rush would have put an end to those.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I love it! I love seeing Phil! I love Phil.

  • I didn't like the first half timeouts. The office needs to get faster. If things fall differently, we would have really needed those at the end of the first half.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Go up and read what NBiT wrote about Hester to get a better idea of reality.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Johnnywad:

agreed Lovie could not game plan for offense or in general.

  • dude, anquan boldin is a fucking animal man. a fucking an-i-mal.

why in thee fuck did the ravens get ride of him!?!??!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

They had $100M reasons to get rid of him.

We got Alshon who might turn into a Boldin-ish WR.

  • he wanted $100M!?!?!? Holy shit. Not saying dude ain't worth a shit-ton of dough based on the last 3 years of super strong work, but a dime. daaaaamn.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

No, Flacco wanted (and got) $100M. They cut Bolden for cap space.

The Ravens were stuck on the Flacco deal and signed a horrible contract. The cap numbers for that deal after a couple of years are in the mid-20s, so the deal is designed to be restructured. And the only way to afford keeping Flacco was to take away basically all of his supporting cast. He's a good quarterback, but he can't maintain the level he's out without help.

The market for QBs right now is ridiculous and its going to take a very brave team to get it back under control.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

    Emery, perhaps?

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

duh. thanks for the slap in the face. totally forgot about that minor factor.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

He rode my benches on Sunday - I guess he's a tier 1 receiver now. Doh.

Cutty will be getting promoted above Russell. Martellus and Julius Thomas looking like gold.

  • are you fucking kidding me on that tackle dude. that was fucking ridiculous.

  • sf just gave up that td... just gave it away.

sloppy garbage play on this drive.

  • ok, I'm out.

I actually not sure I can continue to watch this game. Buck and acheforman's constant packer blowjobing is so fucking vile, I literally can't listen to it any more. So disgusting.

  • maybe one more....

both these teams look like abject dogshit.

  • Pretty good article from a local CBS guy:

"...Jay Cutler was not sacked in the game. There were no pre-snap penalties against the Bears.

You can read that last part again if you want. In fact, my laptop asked me if I was sure I wanted to type it, flagging it as a syntax error..."

  • Well, our boys were awful sloppy at times and I was disappointed that they didn't get into a rythm in the first half but I'll take a victory any way we can get em. 1 down, 18 more to go.

Trestman has his work cut out for this weeks practice and I sure hope the D line can do more than they did today next week. Overall, I'm tickled pink.

  • I hate saying this but, C'mon Niners!

  • Dave and NB.

    Devin Hester

1 KR for 31yds that any NFL return man could have handled including Weems and Ford.

2 punts for 1 yard. He caught one and stood there waiting. AGAIN!!!!

The Bengals didn't kick through the end zone out of fear of Hester. Every team with a decent leg does, just like Gould . He doesn't get credit for touch backs.

The very fact that they punted to him several times proves they weren't afraid to do so. Their punter did shank one around mid field. Whether it was a mistake or planned we'll never know. But if he intended to kick it out of bounds, he could have kicked it 25 yards farther down field.

I guess we agree to disagree. I just wouldn't waste a spot on the
team for what he's showing me. I hope he makes me a fool next week.

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

NB and Dave... like I said, I didn't see a single down today so I can't really say much... except.

Almost every kick off I saw in the GB game and now the cowboys giants has been out the back a tha en'zone. Kicking it out the back to avoid hester?! Huh? That doesn't make sense to me.

So I have to look at punts. How did he do on punts? 2 for 1 yard I think I read? But I'd want to see them... and the next game or two.

Tell you what, I'll just shut up until you hester lovers have no choice but to say I was right like our friend glass-house hardin and or anquan (i remember the haters who said he was washed up).

  • This had to be the least amount of comments for a game thread. Opening day, and hardly any comments during the game. Artoo's chat site worked fairly well.

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

    That's because this site sucks.

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

They were all over on a chat site, I couldn't register/login.

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Maybe if we get down to the twenty posts per game that ChicagoNow can support Jeff will do something about it.

  • D-line lack of pressure was worrisome--but Peppers & Melton barely played in preseason, so maybe they just need to get used to game speed again.

O-line played well beyond expectations, with two rookies and the 5 men only playing together a total of 3 quarters in PS. And Mills put the game away, goading Maaluga into that penalty and keeping his head on enough to not retaliate. The best thing about the O-line? They're only going to get better. Now that Webb is history, we don't have to worry about his inconsistency.

I did not like the LB play. I didn't see Williams in on many plays--he got swallowed up time and time again--which is why there were a lot of Bengals runs and passes across the middle that gashed the D, especially on those long drives.

  • Anderson is an upgrade at SSLB to Roach. He covers in space better, is rangier and was a good pickup.

Briggs played really well, DJ Williams looked rusty. The real issue was Pep and Chicken Dinner. Pep just looked weak and slow. He looked alot like Wale in his last year.

Dinner is just too small. He did draw a hold and is as quick as Clay Matthews but lacks Matthews ability to take a tackle on straight. But he started stunting inside and he's so quick on the stunt that he can take advantage of any OL mistakes in pickup they make. He got the sack on Dalton doing that.

In other news, Reggie Bush looks damn good as a Lion. He looks like a legit weapon. He may have found his groove as a Lion, but can he hold up?

The Steelers lost Pouncey for the year. That team is hurtin.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I only saw a few minutes of the Lions/Vikes game but Bush did look good. Sounded like they leaned on him pretty hard though listening to Billick. I can't imagine that will last for long.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I have been trying to tell you guys to watch out for the Lions this year. They can be dangerous good if they keep it together.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

    (see below)

they were turrible. The vikings were just turibbler.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I was particularly fond of Anderson today. Made a few plays where I noticed him... unlike Williams.

  • In reply to Scharfinator:

It's a nice feeling having Bostic on the bench though, for when we need him.

Hey, we beat a good football team today. That was a good win fresh out of the gate. MArtellus will be huge for us. No sacks against maybe the best front in the NFL. Would like to see Steltz in there for Wright - he is a liability in coverage. We can build on all of that though. Good start.

  • I did note thought, Irish, that Wright was in on a number of tackles. More than I would prefer to see a safety making, especially against the run.

But a hell of a lot better than safeties *missing* tackles.

  • Pound sand haters.

Time to put Minny out of their misery in the division after only 2 weeks.

  • lol, brian harline. that is all.

  • Seeing Zach Bowman in coverage scared the shit out of me. Please 8lb baby Jesus keep Peanut healthy.

  • my god tony romo sucks.

  • in other news... can't get much better than an opening weekend win... and an opening weekend packers loss.

in other other news, fuck the lions.

  • Enjoy

  • And now for something completely different...

  • In reply to Scharfinator:
