A Quick Paragraph on Each NFC North Team

A Quick Paragraph on Each NFC North Team

Green Bay Packers

Tom Crabtree is gone. Greg Jennings in gone. The Packers did not make a significant move to upgrade the running back position. But forgive me if I'm not sounding the "fade from glory" alarm for the club up in Green Bay just yet. The modern Pack regime does not make flashy moves in March. They make flashy plays on the field from September to December. They'll restock their offensive artillery in late April and be a force to reckon with in the 2013 season.

Minnesota Vikings

I'll say it: I think the Vikings are a 6-win team in 2013. They're still starting Christian Ponder at QB and now are backing him up with the worse-than-Ponder Matt Cassel. Percy Harvin covered up Ponder's flaws with his ability to convert the bubble screen into an 80-yard touchdown on a regular basis. Greg Jennings does not replace Harvin. He is a prototypical wide receiver and he's never played with such mediocrity at the quarterback position. The only way Minnesota finds themselves in the postseason is if Adrian Peterson delivers ANOTHER all-world season.

Detroit Lions

Is their defense better? No? Then why would I care if they signed Reggie Bush. Points and yardage were not Detroit's issue in 2012. They can't stop anybody.

  • My first impression is that a paragraph is missing. The one on the only team that matters

    you're welcome doc.

  • Im glad Im not the only one who thinks Greg Jennings is going to struggle mightily with the Vikings. He will be frustrated by week 3 when every team doubles him and Rudolph on passing downs and stacks 10 in the box on running downs. Congrats Vikings for being idiots.

  • In reply to BearDown85:

Plus, as much as I hate the Packers, Aaron Rogers made Greg Jennings better than he actually was.

Pringles and Conte do not make me forget guys like Brown, Carrier, Duerson.

    Losing Manning was a mistake.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Mike Brown SAYS he likes Pringles and Conte

Really, though, what's he gonna say? Pringles don't got it? Cornhusker gonna do a Hurricane like that? No way.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    100...... %.

Thanks again Lovie and JA! The gift that keeps on giving.

  • Soooooo.....Long signed with the Rams for 4yrs/$36mil.... Why couldn't we do that? I'm not sure on all the details but, that looked to be reasonable price for the Bears....

  • In reply to OsosFan:

It would have required the Rams whiffing and signing a different tackle. Long's attitude was going to mean he was going late into the FA season.

It's like saying why didn't I get that house I put an offer in for at the price I wanted? Makes a big difference if somebody else is bidding.

Long realized the market was drying up, and put away his $11M yr asking price. He's still getting $9M. I wonder what his bonus structure looks like.

  • In reply to gpldan:

And Bradford is still gonna suck on a 30 sack season.

  • In reply to OsosFan:

Bushrod may prove to be the better signing. Long has been injured the last two seasons +/-. Bushrod has proven himself to be very durable. Three years ago Long was the better choice hands down. Three years from now, Emery might look pretty smart for signing Bushrod instead.

  • In reply to OsosFan:

And Cockroach only wanted $3.25M. What gives? Pep or Lac are on their way out the door whether we like it or not. You can have a champ offense or defense, but not both.

  • All the owners and GMs are in Arizona this week. This is 'get the trade done' week.

If you were Phil, who are you shopping?

The only player that could reasonably be shopped is Melton. Maybe Wooten. And I think they intend to sign the kid and keep Woot-woot.

  • Somebody in here do an NCAA tournament bracket. I'll join.

I want a new shiny toy athlete and I want one now! Emery, give me something, re-sign Okoye for 850k, sign some mope to a futures contract, just do something for god's sake, all they do is talk about Derrick Rose and the fucking Cubs and Sox here in gray, wet, cold Chicago and it's driving me to drink plastic bottle scotch......

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Yeah, nevermind is right buddy. I invited your ass to my office pool but you gave me some lame excuse.

  • In reply to Shady:

awwww... common maings. You just wanted another green sucker to fleece out of his $20.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I was away from the PS3 watching The Walking Dead and the NCAA selection show. We've got about 40 people in the pool so far and at $20 a bracket that ain't to shabby. When you figure out how to rig the NCAA tourney let me know.

  • In reply to Shady:

wait... 40 X $20... Doc... how much is that?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Some ppl are submitting more than 1 bracket, so add a few bucks.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    awwwww, that's nice.

Who needs Gronk when you have......wait for it.....Steve Maneri.

He's fucking enormous though but to be quite honest I would rather see Jay in the shotgun from the 30yd line in with Marshall and Jeffrey split wide, Black Unicorn at TE, Bennett in the slot and Forte at RB or motioning to the slot. It is insane how many short and medium could be run in so many combos to exploit that sick ass lineup.

  • In reply to Waffle:

You know what I enjoyed most about that article? "...to ex-Bears tight end Kellen Davis..."

  • bang!bang!

  • indeed. Fuck that guy. If I was 6'7 265 i'd be the president of the united states if not president of the world.

  • In reply to Waffle:

I have often wondered what the benefit is of keeping a pure blocking TE on the roster. We're not exactly swimming in tackles right now, but just put your #3 tackle in. That's what teams do on goal line plays.

If the guy is brought in purely to block, nobody is going to buy the play action anyway.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

  • In reply to Waffle:

And that is precisely what the cover-2 was built to destroy. But I hear you.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Yup, if you're a TE and you can't catch the rock .....

And getting FUCKING PAID for it.

Despite Da Blog evidence to the contrary, I can actually write. And she could cook well enough to be a real food critic. To think we could have done that sort of shit.

Turk McBride in case Izzy doesn't come back? Turk McBride in case they bring Izzy back and move McClellin to LB?

I know everyone acts like McClellin could never be a LB but I just don't see this kid playing DE. He's not 252....do you know who is 252? It's Clay Matthews. McClellin is no more than 240 soaking wet.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    most welcome sir

  • Wait, what?

When the fuck did this rule come about?

  • In reply to gpldan:

How did you think compensatory picks were awarded?

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

This way has been going on since the early 2k CBA.

I thought the lockout and the NFLPA negotiated comp picks down to situations where a player signs with another team for less money than the comp'ed team offered. That makes sense. Not just - oh well, we lowballed him and he walked, but he made big $$ so give us a 3rd rounder - because that's anti-competitive.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I don't know about before, but for the last few years at least, it doesn't have anything to do with how much the players were offered by other teams.

It's primarily based on 'net losses' that a team suffers in free agency. For the most part, if a team has 4 of its former players sign with new teams, while signing only 2 new free agents, that team can expect to receive 2 compensatory draft picks in next year's draft. Then there is a complicated formula (that for some reason know one outside of the league office really knows) that involves not only salary $$$ but also playing time and postseason honors to determine what round the picks will be in.

A team can receive a maximum of 4 comp picks per year, and the highest pick you can get is a (late) 3rd rounder, and that's for F.A.s like Mario Williams and Mike Wallace.

Since they obviously can't take draft picks away from you if you have net gains in free agency, you could effectively game the system by alternating off-seasons in which you sign a bunch of FAs one year and let a bunch walk the next year........then you could have a longterm net gain of 0 in free agency but still receive 2-4 compensatory picks every other year.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

Also, it should be noted that the number of picks is not always equal to the number of players lost in free agency. If you lose two kellen davis' and sign on Jay Cutler, you're not getting anything. Likewise, if you lose a Julius Peppers and you sign two jason campbells, you can still probably expect at least a 5th round pick

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

That's an excel sheet I'd like to see.

As with the Clayton article, the system began due to the owners trying to prevent player collusion (see James, LeBron), with players 'punishing' teams and walking away despite valid offers to play to go to more friendly markets, etc. It's been perverted (IMO and Clayton's) to become a valid cupboard cleaning strategy.

Also, if the picks are awarded - I don't understand the rationale in not making them tradable.

  • In reply to gpldan:

yeah I'm not sure why they are not tradeable. Perhaps almost everyone would try to package them and move up, and it would pandemonium in the war rooms? I have no idea

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

cheese, you son of a bitch, do you realize that you actually brought significant value and insight to a post and did it in 3 consecutive comment sections? I knew you could do it. I'm like a proud dad seeing his son get his first participation trophy knowing that he wasn't the kid peeing himself on the end of the bench and constantly readjusting his glasses and protective dental grade mouthguard that his mother obviously made him wear.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

stop. I was going to say something about him coming out of the closet and accepting the fact that's he's actually a Bears fan and not a lame packers fan, but he's still in denial.

Accepting is the first step cheese. Then we can give you a real handle and you can actually post items of value all the time instead of "bears still suck"

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

I had to look to see how posted all those intelligent comments.

    Damn.. Who are you?

The only down side to the Phil Emery regime so far is that they are bang, bang done in Free Agency. They wake me up from my football hibernation with big decisive moves. Then nothing... or next to nothing until the Draft.

Don't know how many of these are fake but the first one is pretty bad.

The cat was my favorite... so much for that whole, 'they always land on their feet' thing.

  • It is acts like this that convince me America is in decline. Sounds like fine, wholesome sort of stuff to me!

  • yaaaawwwnnn...this time of year for football is sooooo slllloooowww...

This has been a pretty crazy FA season though. The NFC Wild West is gonna be bonkers. Keep in mind that the Rams - yes the Rams had the best division record. The 9ers just couldn't beat them. I think losing their HB will hurt though because he was the only one taking on those tough Ds.

  • on the Bears front, I see we lost Roach to the Blackhole.

Daryl Smith is an OLB (31) and a Jag, so he'd be my first choice.

Some others might be Nick Barnett (32), Thomas Howard (30) or Kevin Durant (27).

We can then use whatever money we got left to sign Lance Louis and Izzy.

IF we can restructure one contract or get Melton a deal then maybe we can even get OG Moore who I really like.

Then in the draft we can really have tons of flexibility and get BPA.

  • You mean like best available OL?

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Actually, according to Butch's plan we would be looking at MLB in the first two rounds.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

    Focus, gentlemen, focus

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    exactly dave.

Best. Available. Offensive. Lineman. In. One. And. In. Two. Period.

    Everything else is gra-vay!

  • Yup, Daryl Smith or some other fast dude in there with Briggsy and Lac. If we find ourselves a good center it could very well be the year. Bushrod, Martellus, Beast. Baby Beast. Bush/Forte. Earl. Damn.

By the bye, download the new drama series Vikings. Quite good. The new Oz movie - which was the first book - is excellent. Very faithful to the sequel. Jack Reacher is the beginning of Hanks looking old and having to do scripts he used to be quick to turn down.

  • I was drivin to a meet, So what I'm sayin' is, we all understand y'all got the bag...see...

anyhow... listening to the score... holy shit I'm sorry but this blog is a welcome respite from typical Bear fan on sports radio. Maybe that's just typical football fan on sports radio because when I lived in Colorado, radio Bronco fan was super mental midget.

Anyhow, it appears the Bears management is walking some weird PR line with Urlacher. I think what they WANT, is for him to retire now. And I THINK the offer is, retire now and you will get a special halftime presentation and the whole Carton Fisk treatment, etc etc. But if you grouse, then no. Walk away classy, you don't have it anymore. And he just doesn't want to. He just HAS to play one more year, even if he takes league min. on another team.

So, unfortunately, I think this city is really mixed on this guy, and it could blow up into soap opera status, Brett Farve style, although I hope it doesn't.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I seriously doubt that has anything to do with it GP. If he plays for Green Bay the next 3 seasons, winning two superbowls and injuring Brandon Marshall in the process, he will still get a big halftime presentation when he retires.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I can unequivocally say none of those things would happen.

(Still waiting on Farve's Lambeau ceremony)
