Reverend's Rant, Picks Contest & Sunday Selections

DaBearsBlog Picks Contest

You know the rules. Pick a team you haven't picked. Hope Crown loses.

(Home team in CAPS)

NEW ENGLAND -10.5 Buffalo

Have you read a masterful condemnation of Dave Wannstedt's career? You can do so by CLICKING HERE (and thank me later). Tom Brady vs. Wanny? Yeah, I'll take the good one. New England Patriots 41, Buffalo Bills 16

New York Giants -4 CINCINNATI

Are the Giants great? Not until January. But contrary to the New York media a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers does not constitute a slump. If they lose this one, maybe. New York Giants 30, Cincinnati Bengals 20

TAMPA BAY -3 San Diego

Vincent Jackson revenge game? Nope. Too much Doug Martin, the current darling of the NFL and the man I think will end up winning ROY. Tampa Bay Bucs 26, San Diego Chargers 24

Denver -3.5 CAROLINA

If someone could give me a reason Peyton Manning won't put up 350-400 yards of passing offense I'd take the Panthers. Anyone? Someone? Denver Broncos 28, Carolina Panthers 20

MIAMI -6 Tennessee

I guarantee you one thing: I won't watch a single snap of this game. Miami Dolphins 17, Tennessee Titans 13

BALTIMORE -7.5 Oakland

The most humorous contract negotiation in recent memory will be taking place between Joe Flacco's agent and the Baltimore Ravens. It'll involve the phrases "But guys!" and "Oh c'mon!" from the Flacco side. (His season has been deflating like a March birthday balloon in late April.) Baltimore Ravens 23, Oakland Raiders 18

Atlanta -2 NEW ORLEANS

I would absolutely take the Saints for the upset here if they showed the ability to make a SINGLE tackle against the Eagles Monday night. Atlanta is going to lose one of these games, aren't they? Oh fuck it. New Orleans Saints 33, Atlanta Falcons 27 (OT)

Detroit -2 MINNESOTA

One of these teams is going to hit midday Sunday with a winning record and a logical chance to win the final wild card slot in the NFL. Lions going one way, Vikings going the other. Trends continue. Detroit Lions 24, Minnesota Vikings 14

SEATTLE -6 New York Jets

Seattle is the most difficult place to play in the league and the Jets are the league's most fragile offense. Seattle Seahawks 16, New York Jets 9

Dallas -1.5 PHILADELPHIA

At what point does the NFL stop force-feeding the NFC East on the country? Cowboys stink. Eagles stink. Redskins. Folks will dress this result up as mattering. It doesn't. Dallas Cowboys Score a Few Points, Philadelphia Eagles Score a Few Points Less

SAN FRANCISCO -11 St. Louis

How are the Rams scoring in this game? Greg. The. Leg. San Francisco 49ers 24, St. Louis Rams 12

CHICAGO -1 Houston

16-13 Bears. To read the full game preview, CLICK HERE.

  • Just to try and cheer up a few of you guys. We got about 6 inches of snow about 3 weeks ago. It finally melted on Monday. It started snowing about a day and half ago and hasn't stopped. We've got about a foot out there. Now doesn't that make you feel better?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I miss living in a snowy place.

    You bike in that shit?

  • I usually do. I rode yesterday and pussed out today. I'll be putting on my studded knobbies over the weekend. Some of the smaller ski hills have been open for 2-3 weeks. Usually this weather doesn't rear its ugly head for a few more weeks.

  • Bet you'd get sick of it real quick Doc

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

I wouldn't want to live in Chicago winters. But I lived in AK for a year, Colorado for three and Idaho for 6. I loved the snowy winters. I like the cold crisp air. I loved the slopes. I even enjoyed shoveling the walk. I was always happy when Spring returned, but I enjoyed them.

Seattle grey is tougher in my opinion. It's just so ....blah...for 8-9 even 10 months a year. Again, Colorado and Idaho winters are not Minnesota or Chicago winters. I'm sure I'd have a much harder time with them.

  • Oh yeah. I miss living in a snowy place, too. About like I miss the ABE GIBRON or DAVE WANNSTEDT regimes.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Ony 70s here today and I STILL may take a quick dip in rthe pool to spite "winter"!

  • Canada, it's just like a Canadian to try to cheer someone up with no alterior motive. That is very suspect. Very suspect indeed.

  • Yeah. Take off, eh. Hoser?

Typical. Use people for their labor, discard.

  • Discard? Pretty sure they received compensation in return for their labor.

  • You've never worked in politics have you Sac? have you ever been an intern? Have you ever been a volunteer? For politics I mean.

You'd feel much differently about your political leadership if you knew these fucking guys. For Illinois...You think Dick Durbin is a nice person? You think Mark Kirk is a guy you could hang with? Yeah, if you're used to hanging with satan himself.
You think your guy Obama is different. I knew him when he was a shitty state senator that didn't do shit in any committees, instituted no change, texted and emailed on his fucking blackberry through every meeting/vote/discussion, didn't vote for shit and treated everyone like a lipstick smudge on a glass he was about to drink out of. He just did it in a charming way.
You think Romney is a fucking asshole? Guess what ... he is...they all are. The sooner you don't pin your hopes on a motherfucking good for nothing politician the better you'll be. You can do more good by yourself in your own community than there pieces could ever do for you.

  • Case and motherfucking point:

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-petraeus-resigns-cia-affair-20121109,0,6774402.story

Power fucking corrupts don't it. Don't worry, it probably only happened once. I'm sure there is a great explanation.

  • Not that I hold politicians in high regard but my nephew worked for Durbin 4-5 years ago (paid staffer) and said he was a really nice guy.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Maybe he was nice because he paid him? He comes off as phony and smarmy. When he starts talking I'd like to punch him right in the cocksucker!

  • +1 That aint nuttin but the truth brotha!!

  • Feel the hatred running through you! Use it and your conversion to the dark side will be complete!

It's more like extreme frustration. If I hated you GP you'd know it.

You're obviously an intelligent guy so when you post stuff like that it pisses me off because it's a SB Nation type post. It's beneath you and you know this. That's what pisses me off about it.

  • You know what GP. Do your thing. I'm going to try to be done making comments about blatant incendiary comments except if they come from Packers trolls.

You have my blessing. Go forth and spew upon the blog whatever sugar and humor coated venom you feel you have to.

I was about to show my 13-yr-old son how funny some of the posts are on here. He's cool - insists on watchin the Daly Show, even tho it's past his bedtime.

So, then i come acrss this post, and i thought, "geez, there are a lot of people in this country who really don't get it!"

I am embarssased at your lack of class, your lack of vocabulary, and , most of all, your complete surrender to utter cynicism. i am just guessing, but i i would bet you have no kids older than puberty, right?

Or, if you did, they avoid you like a plague. No?

  • In reply to gpldan:

Mitt had time to prepare. He knew he was going to lose, barring some last-minute surprise. Everybody knew, in the final days. The republicans couldn't admit it publicly, of course. Republican voters would have stayed home, more seats would have been lost, and the defeat would have been even more humiliating. And it helps to build false hope in the sheeple. The disappointment turns to anger, the anger is directed at the winner, and the losers use it to their advantage.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Good description of the Scott Walker Gubernatorial election in WI, except it was Democrat sheeple who took it to another level. They started a recall in the first few months he was in office because they didn't like his policy. The Democrat politicians fled the state, stomping their feet like a child, and the sheeple stomped their feet and protested at the Capitol for the next year, because they wanted a do-over election.

I personally disdain both major parties as a whole, but I've liked a few politicians here and there that want to tackle the budget issues. I'm a big fan of the Concord Coalition. 20 years ago when it was founded they talked about the impending problems with Federal spending and the entitlement time bomb. I wish the Supreme Court would not have shot down term limits, because we might have some leaders with balls. Instead, we're stuck with politicians more worried about getting re-elected than tackling tough issues.

Instead of looking at future demographic changes and properly planning, governments at all levels have dramatically increased spending in the last 15+ years compared to the growth in the economy. Increases in govt spending at all levels has increased at almost double the rate of growth in GDP, all the while racking up huge deficits.

We have a major lack of leadership at the Federal level when it comes to fiscal responsibility. The Senate hasn't even PROPOSED a budget in the last three years! Obama proposed one, as far as I know, and the Senate shot it down by over 90%! The "radical" Paul Ryan proposed a plan to balance the budget 30 fucking years from now, and he's considered a radical!

As the deficit grows, more and more of federal revenues are going to paying interest on the debt. Demographics are a bitch. People are living longer with less workers to support past promises to retirees.

The only spending cut I see is Obama-Care, which will cut 500 billion from Medi-Care. Rationed health care for the elderly, with an emphasis on "Wellness", seems to be a partial solution.

OK, I'm on a ramble with no point other than the government "leaders" suck. I've been in business 16 years and I know a large debt load is very toxic.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Disregard my Obama-care paragraph. Not a fan of rationed health care.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

    I just pasted this over..

Blogfader 5-2 (NE, Ind, Chi, SF, Cin, Dal, Was)

Ben in norcal 5-2 (Den, Cin, Hou, NE, Chi, NO, SD)

  • In reply to Viva:

Thanx man, think im 6-2 now after GB last week.

  • Denver -3.5

  • For my own personal reference

TB, Tenn, Oak, Wash, Chi, Ariz, Indy, Det.

  • Denver

  • The Beloved.

  • This is a HOME game. We gotta win this shit. Teams fear traveling to Seattle, Atlanta, Kansas City...Fucking KC! why? home-field advantage.

I want the Bears for once to instill that type of fear into opponents venturing to the windy city.

I could live with a 1-1 split with the Texans/9ers, but keep in mind what that would most likely mean.

The Pack would most likely be only 1 game behind us. The Vikes or Lions would gain a game on us. We'd be tied with the 9ers for that first week playoff bye, and at least one game behind the Falcons for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

There's a lot at stake here, and that's not even counting all the momentum the Bears have built.

  • Bears are undefeated at home

Texans are undefeated on the road

    Something's gotta give

  • For those who wanted Mercilus...

"Texans DC Wade Phillips sees a similarity in how first-round OLB Whitney Mercilus' "light is coming on" to J.J. Watt's development last season.
"Whitney's earned more (playing) time," Phillips said, "so we're going to play him more." After learning from the sidelines early in the season, the No. 26 overall pick has racked up three sacks and two forced fumbles in the past two games."

  • Awesome. Fuck me.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    I did.

  • Lisa, is that you?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Hmmm.

  • (names have been changed to protect the innocent... or not so innocent. hee hee)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    crying tears of pride.

  • thanks doc. when it rains it pours actually. I think i can get used to this.

  • More from the Rotoworld files...

"Bears sack leader DT Henry Melton, in the final year of his rookie contract, is open to an in-season extension.
Melton also leads the Bears with 15 QB pressures. "Everybody knows that we've got a good situation here, and I love the city, and I love the fan base," Melton said. "I'd like to stay here for a long time." The team has roughly $3 million in cap space available for a Melton deal. While they prefer to wait until the offseason, the Bears are not strictly opposed to an in-season extension."

  • Just read Alshon practiced today. He was limited but did practice. Lovie said he is doubtful for Sunday. Doubtful beats the shit out of being out. He probably won't play but the Texans can't count on that.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Yeah, I read that too. I'm just wondering if it's a pain threshold issue, or if his hand is still slightly fractured.

It's not like a foot where Alshon has to put pressure on it. And even on the play where he did fracture his hand, he still caught the ball!

If he does play, I would just advise him to go down almost immediately so a tackler doesn't spear his hand.

I'm sure Hester could give him some lessons on that.

  • Bang! Bang!

  • RIMSHOT!

  • The Doug Martins -3.5

  • In reply to FQD1911:

in case you want to get mouthy, Blogfather, this means Tampa Bay.

  • Nice rant, reverendave. How come everyone is pointing the finger at Geno Hayes, while Anthony Walters goes unfingered? Wasn't it number 37 who took the bad angle on Johnson? According to the roster, that is Anthony Walters. Johnson blew past Hayes (#58) at the line of scrimmage.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpuALWXl4CY

Toub called-out Hayes for premature celebration on Devin Hester's 44 yd. punt return. But it looked like it was Anthony Walters who missed the most important block. The Titan's J. Harper(?) ran right by him on his way to Hester (I think. The camera angle may have made Harper and Walters appear closer than they were).

    http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/videos/Network_highlights_BearsTitans/0ba92bc6-cf29-4b1f-8a35-4d6bf030356b

Anyway, Hester deserved a TD, Johnson didn't, Walters needs work.

    The Feelin. Word.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I've had the pleasure of stumbling home drunk, stoned, or both many times after watching him live right down the road from my house. He's an incredible piano / keyboard player as well. I wouldn't doubt if he arranged or helped arrange the music for a few of the songs he has done.

  • Two free agents that the Bears can look at next year or after this season is over with.

    Ryan Clady
    &
    Braden Albert

  • On ESPN 1000 Jay alluded to possible courting of Clady in the offseason. Said it's part of his job description on the Bears to be a recruiter.

  • In reply to Waffle 3.0:

    Damn.. I like his job.

Asking or pointing out studly players to help make the team better?

    Wait a minute..

  • Please and thank you.

  • Tampa Bay -3

  • I guess you all know by now that Texans nose tackle Shaun Cody is officially out. Earl Mitchell will get his first start. He regularly spells Cody, so it doesn't look like there will be much of a dropoff until someone spells Mitchell. Texans will use a rookie DT and a rusty NT, drafted in the 3rd rd by Carolina in 2011 and released a year later. He was picked up by NE this Sept. and released a week later. Houston picked him up less than 2 weeks ago.

Owen Daniels is a gametime decision. No one seems to know exactly what's wrong with him. At first I was seeing "hip" in quotation marks, like it wasn't really his hip. Kubiak at one point said "I don’t know how to describe it. It’s a sore back of his hip, very, very sore." Some say it's his lower back. I'm guessing buttbone. Daniels is a Chicago-area native and a big part of Houston's offense, so you'd think he'd play if at all possible, but it's going to be a cold, wet, hard field for a tight end with a very, very sore butt.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

    Sounds dirty.

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

Bruising of the star anus? Dirt indeed. What a pussy.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Here's to hoping that if he does play, he leaves with it even sore(r). A few quick hits in from the Bears and it'll hurt him for a long time. Like American History X.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

    If it's the tailbone, ouchie.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Don't chance it, Owen. Take the day off.

Good song Viva. Just curious, did you ever decide on a military career or move on?

  • Speaking of best songs...

I'm 3.5 hours from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, live at Key Arena.

    Holy shit am I stoked.

  • Have a blast maing. Do you use I-tunes Doc? I'm in a recording mood tonight.

  • Man, lemme know how that is. Hoping to catch them in Brooklyn in Dec. Saw them on the Greendale tour. That album was hit or miss but even so that show was not to be missed. He's epic.

  • Neil, my favorite hoser.

I had a ticket to see The Who tomorrow night in Pittsburgh. It was purchased months in advance. I don't know how the fuck I failed to see the conflict with the Bears-Texans game.

What am I missing, besides the chance to see The Who before they die? Anybody see them in their old age?

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I seen them in the late 80's on their 25 year reunion tour. It was pretty damn good, but that was 23 years ago! John Entwistle kicked ass and stood out the most that night, but he's not around anymore. They didn't really impress me at the SB a few years ago, but if you got the tix I say go, unless you can sell them.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

I was going with 3 friends, and 1 had already bailed. I gave my ticket to the other two, so they could get someone else to go. I regret it, but I'm looking forward to this game more than any concert or party. How often do you get to see the Bears go 8-1? You can't buy that.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

    I love him so.

If you determine it didn't count, I will take OAK this week. Otherwise if you determine it did count, then my backup pick is CIN +4.

    GIANTS -4

i didn't realize that this was the same as crown - i really need to differentiate, but i guess it's too late now

if allowed, i would like to revoke my pick on the giants

  • Detroit

so, if that was allowed, my new pick is detroit -2
