DaBearsBlog Picks Contest Standings & Thursday Night Thread

You must enter ten selections to be eligible to win the Picks Contest. The following are the standing through five weeks of the season. Unfortunately for MichBearFan, I have found you selected Philadelphia twice and thus you have been eliminated from the competition. (If I made a mistake, please email me at jeff@dabearsblog.com.) Also, because I can, I haven't even looked at the selections from thebigcheese.

I am not including the teams you've used thus far. You must keep track of those yourselves. If you believe I have made a mistake, please email me.

Mathematically you are not eliminated until you've registered a sixth loss as Crown is guaranteed no worse than a 5-5 record. Pushes are losses.

  • First to say....3-2 SUCKS!

Oh Well perhaps Crown will mess up his next 5...

  • 1-4 baby!

Jeff, if Crown decides to make more than 10 picks, you wouldn't necessarily be eliminated at 6 losses, correct?

Great pic at the top... That's a must have.

  • Correct, Who is. That's where the game gets fun.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

    8-7 would beat 5-5 anyways

  • Holy shit, I picked once huh? I don't even remember who I took but I may stay at that perfect 1-0.

I'm not a fan of Thursday Night Football, I think it's too much. Crazy, I know.

  • In reply to Perno:

I 1000% agree about Thursday Night Football. I don't need it. It's almost becoming a hassle to watch it. And I hate that anybody nursing any kind of injury essentially misses the game.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

I like it when the Bears aren't part of it. I really like the announcers. More info, less ego.

  • 0-3....

  • how do the ravens not cover against the chiefs? bullshit.

as for all you fucks who bet on the packers last week - you got what you deserved.

  • In reply to evantonio:

Yes I did. I was extremely happy to be wrong (as long as the Colts won).

  • Crown, who do you like this week? Three teams, preferably home. Anyone else got any strong likes?

  • good week to take Houston at home.-3 vs. pack

  • In reply to EnderWiggin:

Thanks Ender (...rushes back to World of Tanks ... )

  • What is your WoT handle? I'll shoot you a message, then we can shoot some arty.

  • I don't give out my picks for free Irish. You have to call my 1-800 hotline.

  • Just watched a very dark documentary on Australian Network about concussions in Aussie Rugby League. It's a much more brutal sport in terms of tackling and head collisions par for the course (no helmets remember). The tackles were sickening that they showed. One veteran noted that when he got concussed .... he would play terribly the following week, 50% the week after, and then approach normality after three to four weeks. They showed one poor bastard who suffered two vicious concussions in one game. Memory loss was a common early indicator of CTE. God help any of us who've had multiple concussions thus far - these guys don't look good, and some of them very young.

Of course they showed clips of NFL USA and coincidentally Sweetness was on there getting absolutely speared/Piledriven upwards into his helmet/chin. Buccaneer from about '87. Deadly. Then of course they showed pee wee and a kid just ploughing head first helmet to facemask and planted a kid stone cold. They were about 6. The kid was crying immediately, and the sickening thing is the other kid walked away like Dick Butkus, proud of what he'd done. There was an audible 'Oh...' around the field as parents clearly saw that there was a line that had been crossed. Had he been coached to do that, or was he watching a dirty pro ?

If you walk into a room and don't know why you went in there, if you're often confused and miss obvious things - when you used to run rings around people - or if you put your keys in the same place every day but take 15 minutes to find them every day ... you may have early stage CTE. I know I think I do ... I've lost count of the number of concussions I've had. Drinking, fighting, falling over badly head first, falling over on ice as a kid, numerous accidents. I literally stopped drinking because I knew i had to stop with the splitting your head open thing. If you know what I'm talking about ... and you like to often get 'overserved' as Jimmy Mac called it ... and you love your loved ones .. maybe it's time to quit while you're ahead and never have another hangover again .. .and stop frequently being an arsehole et cetera. I don't know.

So that's about the size of my contribution this evening as I begin praying for Pittsburgh, Cincy and Atlanta by 10.

Yup. Think twice about letting your kids play football ... and stop drinking if you're messy. Night night.

  • Irish,

What's the name of said documentary? I'd like to check it out.

  • No idea bro. It's on loop now though if any intruders break int your house and surf the web. Australian network, ABC.

  • Don't pray for Pittsburgh if you don't like helmet-to-helmet hits.

All the Steelers do it, not just Harrison. Did you see Ryan Mundy's hit on Darrius Heyward-Bey two weeks ago?

Bey was knocked unconscious. I thought he was paralyzed for sure, but he finally did move an arm.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

The Steelers are probably the dirtiest team in football; the Raiders ain't quite what they used to be.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Don't forget about the Lions. They are definitely in the conversation.

  • Just a shout out to da blogfader for putting this little contest together. Not to mention all the time and energy you put into this blog. Very much appreciated.

  • In reply to Shady:

Well said Shady. well done Blog Vader .... and if I use the Bears four weeks in a row ...

And I could probably sue you for kicking me out of the comp I can't win anyway. Mental aggravation. I have children.

    (waves hand at Jefe)

I am not the rule-breaker you're looking for ..... Bears plus four are good for you every week Irish ......

  • fuck. I have zero clue who I've picked except the falcons and bears. Shit.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    It must be the CTE....

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I feel like Carimi after his double false start penalties. Do yourself a favor MB and make sure you don't suffer the same fate as I. That and being called out in the same blog post as thebigcheese really sucks.

No offense Jeff, its a really cool contest. I just had a horrible start to the Bears season; and really haven't recovered from it yet. The rest of you, bear down.

  • If I win and can't make it to Chicago that weekend to redeem the prize, you get it Irish.

  • In reply to Crown:

Well aw shucks. Seeing as I live in Thaiand brah .. I'll give it right back to ya in gratitude. Cheers.

Hey, can I borrow ten dollars?
    Can you make it twenty?

  • Houston -3

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    FUCK the packers!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

And a big thank you Jeff for saying 'fuck you' to the fucking packer trolls! simply awesome.

"Also, because I can, I haven't even looked at the selections from thebigcheese."

    Hee hee

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    That was classic!

I've earned my 1-4. I think the rest of the year I'll just try to put the hoodoo on certain teams. I have the uncanny knack of picking the upset of the week (except I'm picking the fave).

  • oh, and that pic is awesome. Gotta get my son oneathems.

  • By the way, if I win this thing, I'm still giving some of these things away. I'm just not sure what that process will be yet. And I fully intend to win this thing.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

is that why you've been staying away from josie's? consider it bad luck on your picking mojo?

on a related note - i don't like how Monday night is pool league night there. those tables take up valuable viewing space.

  • In reply to evantonio:

I go to war with those tables when Bears play. Which is twice more this season.

  • Fun wif interwebz:

type 'completely wrong' and then click the images tab.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    on Google.

  • In reply to gpldan:

This came up for me: http://narwhaler.com/img/lg/w/programming-doing-it-completely-wrong-lGw73f.jpg

    totally hilarious!

  • In reply to gpldan:

Pathetic... work of the Obama campaign no doubt.

The hate coming out of the Obama partisans since his sans-teleprompter fail is over the top. Smells of desperation.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I typed 'smells of desperation' and this was the first image returned.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I rest my case... the Obama crowd will do anything.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Take a big whiff of Mitts magic Mormon underwear, my friend. That's what desperation smells like. When you're so fucking nuts that you wear panties made of tinfoil-hat to keep demons at bay, that's desperation. It's not Objectivism, lol.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

If you want to read about the Mormon religion read Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven. It's a great book by one of my favorite writers (Into Thin Air, Into the Wild, Where Men Win Glory). A lot of the book explains the history of the Mormon religion and a large part of the book talks about Fundamentalist Mormons (Polygamy and Fraud). It will definitely make you think.

  • Tell me what you think of religion NOW!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

That can't be legit. She didn't hit or berate anyone!

  • MB, MB, MB........

  • It hits me every so often and I sit back and laugh:

    Brandon Marshall is our WR.

  • I bet fins fans will spin it that they could afford to give up BM as they already had a go to guy in Hartline...

  • Blogfather, you got my record at 2-1, but it should be 1-2. I lost week 1 with Seahawks and week 3 with SF. Won last week with Bears. Thought I'd let you know.

  • Hey, my wife can make those hats or beanies. Pretty cool and easy.

Sucks not having high speed internet.

  • I've been thinking about this for the last week and i'm going to throw it out there.

    Texans...W (no cushing, abuse Manning)
@9ers...L ( I truly think we will roll them but i have to put in another loss)

14-2, NFC N Champs, #1 seed, NFC Champs, Superbowl Champs.

  • season of destiny/season of redemption/season of Cutty

  • We are still a LONG way from that.

  • You, sir, are Nostradamus.

The Texans do look a lot more vulnerable after that Jets game. If the Vikes can beat the 9ers, no reason we can't

Those Vike games are gonna be crucial cause they have a sweet heart schedule.

  • The Vikings certainly are a bit more worrisome than before the season started!

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Those are games which our Offense is gonna have to step up. Vikes got #1 run d, and their secondary with Smith back there is much improved.

Ponder is completing like 70%, and Peterson rarely fumbles now a days, so it'll be a challenge for our D to get the turnovers, but I'm sure they're more than up to it.

  • "If the Vikes can beat the 9ers, no reason we can't"

    And they're saying

"If the PACKERS can beat the Bears, no reason WE can't!"

And Jeffrey's return is not yet known.

  • I like the way you think!

  • I've seen Daniel Manning a couple of times this year, he looks OK against the deep ball.

  • fb_avatar

I'm having a hell of a time remembering which ones I've already picked. Guess it's time to go digging in the archives.

  • In reply to Chris Odom:

That's what I ended up doing. But Jeff DID say in the first post we could only pick a team once, so it's our own damn fault.

  • Sorry, Steelers but this is the NFL and

    There ARE no GIMMES!

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

haha It felt like an upset special. Once again, I keep saying. Short week. away game, etc..."trap game."

The way that Jags game was going in the first half, it could've easily been us.

Fortunately, we got straight up BALLERS on D. And Jay stepped it up on that long opening drive.

  • Oh, I am DEFINITELY loving it.

Especially since it was THE head- hunting-dirt-bag himself, James Harrison, who got SMOKED in pass coverage on 3rd down to put the Titans in Field goal range.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

That was sweet. He definitely can't keep up in the passing game.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

He is the POSTER BOY for dirty play in the NFL as far as I am concerned and the Steelers are the dirtiest team in the NFL , too. Clark is ANOTHER head hunter.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I will really ENJOY listing to the Steeler Broadcast tomorrow.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I was surprised that TE left him in the dust. Maybe that TE is super fast (have no idea) but Harrison wasn't even in the same zip code. I knew he had the rep for dirty play but I don't see many Steelers games. I know he's dumber than a box of rocks.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

This is just his second week back after having a knee scoped.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

2 games in 5 days CANNOT be beneficial to a very recently scoped knee (See Brian Urlacher).

BAAAD call, Mike Tomlin. If Harrison's on the field for 3rd and long, he BETTER be blitzing because he didn't look like he could cover my 88 year old, cane-wielding, mother who STILL got on the dance floor to do THE TWIST at her granddaughter's wedding last Saturday!

  • And to top the evening off?

The Yankees lost in 13 innings!

  • TidBit:

Cunte is leading us with 35 tackles.

  • In reply to EnderWiggin:

If Lack was a linebacker and not a cheerleader, that stat would not be true.

  • I'm looking for a big game from Pep and Forte coming off the bye week and having more time to rest their injuries..

Tice better watch old tape of Forte torching the Lions on screen passes and Pep ending Stafford's season.

    Marshall 8 catches 111yards / 1 TD
Bennett 4 catches 65 yards, 3 first downs 1 TD
Forte 88 yards on the ground and 75 receiving yards
Hester 2 catches 45 yards AND 2 returns over 40 yds
    Bush 2 rushing TD's
    Davis 3 catches 55 yards 1 TD

    Cutty 19/28 275yds 3 TD's 1 INT / sacked 3 times

The key to the Lions is making them work for their scores so no deep balls to Megatron. Don't get Martzy behind your own 30yd line resulting in needless sack fumbles and turnovers.

Move the pocket against these Lions and get the ball out quick to Marshall, Bennett and Davis. neutralize the rush with Forte and Bush and hit Forte out of the backfield when he is matched up with a linebacker.

I can't wait to watch this ass kicking.

  • sorry, Cutty for a smidge over 300yds....so the pundits can insert bear weiner into mouth and write their version of apology articles.

Trick ass trifling media bitches and mark ass busters.
