Chicago Bears at Jacksonville Jaguars Game Preview

Chicago Bears at Jacksonville Jaguars Game Preview

The Bears have a brilliant opportunity to enter the bye at 4-1 and set the stage for a big season. They can't lose Sunday and they won't.

  • I always like the Chicago Bears.

  • Jacksonville has the league's worst offense in terms of yardage gained and the second-worst offense in terms of points scored.
  • They have the 26th ranked defense in terms of yardage allowed and the 21st in terms of points allowed.
  • Even on an offense that bad, the great Maurice Jones-Drew is averaging 4.9 yards a carry.
  • Jeremy Mincey (above), a defensive end the Bears tried to acquire this off-season, has been held without a sack through four games.

  • This is an opponent tailor made for the Bears. They have registered only two quarterback sacks on the year while surrendering twelve. If Mel Tucker has to be creative (blitzes) to try and hit Cutler, he'll end up leaving the middle of the field wide open.
  • I see one flaw in the Bears defense: guarding the slot receiver on the go (9) routes. Chris Conte seems a bit slow to the ball and both Gibson (Rams) and Bryant (Cowboys) exploited the Bears secondary from that position.
  • After giving MJD only 13 carries against the Bengals last week, head coach Mike Mularkey expressed regret. I expect 25-30 for the back.
  • If you read this site regularly you know how big a fan I am of Justin Blackmon. I think he can be one of the best receivers in the sport and his physicality will be a challenge for Jennings, Tillman or whomever is lined up across from him.
  • Blaine Gabbert is a dump off machine, especially to MJD, Greg Jones and tight end Marcedes Lewis. Mularkey's offenses want to dink and dunk you to death and I don't see that approach working against this ferocious Bears defense.
  • I expect their performance in Dallas will give the Bears offensive line a tremendous confidence boost. That especially goes for J'Marcus Webb, who looked technically sound Monday night. I expect protection to be solid this week.
  • And when protection is solid I think the Bears can throw the ball on anybody in the league. I think the Bears will do just enough in the run game to keep the Jaguars safeties honest and attack them successfully on the outside. I think this passing game is going to look its best Sunday.

  • Survive: Brian Urlacher. I wrote about it Wednesday. You can read that piece by CLICKING HERE.
  • Thrive: Brandon Marshall. I choose to believe Marshall's Monday night outing was a coming out party and he'll salivate at the site of AJ Green shredding the Jaguars secondary. I expect Marshall to dominate.

  • Maurice Jones-Drew will be held to 77 yards rushing.
  • Adam Podlesh will average over 46 yards per punt against his former franchise.
  • The average starting field position for the Jaguars will be their own 17 yard line.

If the Bears had a tough game next week I would subscribe to the trap game theory. But knowing they have a week off will allow the Jaguars to hold their focus. I just can't see the Jags scoring very much on what is currently the best defense in the league.

Chicago Bears 30, Jacksonville Jaguars 10

  • While Blackmon was the FIRST wideout in the draft, and the FIFTH pick overall, I must question this line:

If you read this site regularly you know how big a fan I am of Justin Blackmon

    That was sarcasm, yes Blogfadder?

  • In reply to gpldan:

Why would that be sarcasm? I think Blackmon is a once in a generation talent. Unfortunately i think he ended up in the worst possible locale.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

I think Jefferies (you're welcome shady) is going to be a better NFL WR.

I also think Blackmon looks like a 62 year old Caribbean shrimper.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Greg Oden looked like a 73 year old bathroom attendant. And we all know how that worked out.

  • In reply to evantonio:

You had to go there, didn't you?

  • he even hangs out with old broads:

  • In reply to evantonio:

  • I'd like to se Bennett back soon and Marshall taken out of the slot. Although shifting him in there and then back to the 1, probably makes DCs nuts. Esp. when the shell game you play includes Hester. If Hester would only be willing to line up in the slot, per his agent, we could keep them guessing until team exited the huddle and really cause problems. Opposing team would have to constantly check out of zones into man.

  • In reply to gpldan:

It's Marshall I want to see in the slot. We'd kill people with slants like they've killed us with since ... .forever.

  • Wouldn't be so sure the Dallas game was much of an indicator of the Bears' O-line, Jefe. They were missing their nose tackle for one thing, and that's the really important 33% of your defensive line. Our line sucks no matter what happened in Dallas.

Regardless, we're going to kick the shit of some pussy cats down in Jax-hole .. .and MJD will be lucky to finish the game never mind average 4.9 yards a carry. Knock two bucks fifty off that and expect two more pick sixes.

  • I'll be at the game. I'm predicting Forte gets almost 200 yds rushing, another 50 in receiving along with a TD in the air. I also have him on my Fantasy Football team so I'm more biased.

    Also, boob vodka:

  • In reply to Perno:

I want a bottle of that stuff. BOOBIES!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Call me crazy, but things just taste better once gorgeous breasts and nipples are added to them.

  • In reply to Perno:

I am with you 150% my friend.

Oh, and speaking of gorgeous breasts and calling you crazy:

  • In reply to Perno:

I'd just like to note that Perno has come out strong in the first quarter with penis and mustard knuckle sandwiches and boob vodka. Value points on both ends. I apologize if I mistakenly added knuckle to the mix but it seems to work.

  • In reply to Crown:

posting pictures of hot chicks pourig misc. liquids over their tits will always get bonus points from me... for what it's worth.

  • In reply to Crown:

Penis and Mustard knuckle sandwich. Makes it vaguely, ambiguously gay. Like this:

  • In reply to Crown:

Much appreciated Crown. I'll do my best to continue bringing it.

  • In reply to Perno:

    Mmmm... Titty residue....

  • The best thing about Marshall is that he can play every WR position.

If our fear is protection and time to throw then put him in the slot and use quick hitters to get him the ball for YAC.

If we loosen a team up with the run then use him as a decoy in the slot, run him out of the area and abuse with KD or Bennett/Jeffrey/Hester in space over the middle.

We have so many weapons. This is crazy.

  • I hope people realize now that the Rams aren't a crappy team. The Bears dismantled a decent St. Louis team, destroyed the Cowgirls, and pantsed a Colts team that is a lot better than most people give credit to.

So the Jags are gonna get destroyed. I worry that MJD will have a big game, and/or that Gabbert will have a good game--the Bears have a history of shutting down on aspect of an opposing offense, only to let another guy have a career game. I still predict a 21-point win, though.

Hester's gonna break one in this game. He's due.
Urlacher and Peppers will get most of the 2nd half off.
Cutler is gonna have a sub-par statistical game, mainly because the Bears are gonna have a big lead by half. I think it'll be another slow start, but they'll have one of those 3-minute bursts that breaks Jax's back early in the 2nd quarter.

Marshall works great in the slot. But you know who else works great there? Bennett. And Earl's hands are better. Let Bennett work the slot, and that'll open up Marshall downfield.

The Bears are just now scratching the surface of what this offense can do, when Cutler is used (and protected) right.

Job #1 is keeping everyone healthy. Against teams like Jax, all the rest will take care of itself.

Ah man, we were thinking the same thing. Your post wasn't up when I wrote mine. Nice analysis.

  • fb_avatar

With the St. Louis win over previously undefeated Arizona, I think the Bears' 23-6 win looks more impressive.

    Go Bears!

  • Watched the game. Impressive win by the rams.

Did you guys see this at the 4:15 mark:

Dude got KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!!!

Oh, and kolb was a rag doll. he had to keep putting his tampon back in on the field.

  • This is the exact type of trivial game that I could see Forte re-injuring the high ankle sprain and being done for the rest of the season. Trivial in the sense that its non-conference, non-divisional, not that its not important to win. In my opinion, he is the second most important player on the field behind Cutler. If he goes down the dynamic of our team changes instantly. I would keep him out and let Bush and Bell do the running work. It would be trifling if he goes down and can't come back.

  • In reply to Crown:

Crown, this is your new anthem:

Trife Livin' you trick ass marks!

  • Turk bringing heat Waff. But, I can't stop watching this video. This is my current anthem:

Best video since My Mind is Playing Tricks On Me (Ghetto Boys)

  • In reply to Crown:

  • Ugh.

That brought me back to '97 in a very unpleasant fashion.

  • Can't get into that garbage

Currently this is my favorite little ditty:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I know MB, too much booty for you. I just think the video is funny. I wonder what genetic/biological trait makes white guys like racks more and black guys like ass more. Personally, I'd rather have a juicy ham than big ol titties.

  • In reply to Crown:

yeah crown, waaaaaaay too much booty for me.

    It was very funny indeed.

  • In reply to Crown:

    Don't make me choose!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'll d.j. the December trip if you don't mind. You need to get you some hippy music, mang.

  • oh for fuck sake doc... I'll load my ipod with fucking phish and other hippy meanderings.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Every time I have that shit blasting in the background whilst getting killed by you guys in MW3, each and every one of you comment on how jammingly good it is (my words).

    Don't judge a band by it's followers.

  • I do love me some of that shit doc.

(on the down lo of course... god damn hippies!)

  • I saw the St Louis show about a month or so ago, Doc. They're went waaaay old school, pulling out their late 80s early 90s stuff. It was a breath of fresh air. It's like they're going back from where they started. Full circle. No one can compete with a sober Trey on the guitar in my opinion. Scary to see all the youngsters on their first ride around knowing that I was like them when I first saw them at the aragon in 93 when they were touring junta. Made me feel old, but I had such a great time. They were built to destroy small to medium sized arenas.

  • In reply to Crown:

Crown, my boy! I didn't know you were a phellow phish phollower. Good on you.

My first phish show, I was at the incomparable Gorge ampitheater in George, Washington. It was hot as blazes. Mushies in full effect. Phish starts out kind of mellow, which was good because, like I said, hot as fuck. As the sun starts to set, I hear a song I had never heard before. A beautiful mostly instrumental song called Divided Sky (off Junta, as you know). I was melting, but the song was just putting my soul at ease. Then, right as the sun sets on the horizon, as if Trey knew this, the temperature drops to a comfortable 80's almost instantly. Right at that moment, The tempo of the song changed to the faster more jamming way it gets near the end of that song. It was as if Trey was using the sun as a prop , so he teased us and teased us and when it went down, he turned the heat up on stage. It went from mellow, to full on jamming ass kicking hippy rock.

Goddamn I loved that moment. Top three concert moments of my life. The others were at a Dead show and a Mark Knopflerr show. Both drug induced, but hey, so what. I'm neither proud nor ashamed.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

May I suggest three live albums.

Slip Stitch & Pass (more of a live compilation)

A Live One (also a live compilation)

    The Hamptons Come Alive

  • Doc, the Gorge is on my bucket list for a show someday after I seen pictures from a show my buddy went to a few years ago (Allmans and Furthur). Check out the guitar work on this song. Give them about 5-6 minutes to get cranking this Neil Young cover.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Red Rocks is also quite Grand, but the Gorge is better.

As for Cortez the killer, fucking love that song.

Going to see Neil with Crazy Horse in November.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

dude, I thought sam kinison died?

  • Out of those, I'd pick A Live One or Hamptons Come Alive, put I haven't listened to any of their studio stuff in years. I just download live shows I've been to and the few I've really wanted to go to but missed. I also saw a bunch of the Oysterhead show when they did their one tour (Trey, Les Claypool and Stuart Copeland).

On my bucket list: Gorge, Red Rocks and Bill Graham.

  • In reply to Crown:

Hey Crown, how did your New Year's show turn out a few years ago in NOLA with Galactic at Tipitina? Guest musicians? Did you bring any sour d or headbands?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Not much my style MB, but I enjoyed the song. Kind of reminds me of something off Disintegration from the Cure.

  • Hey Johnny, this one's for you!

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Wilbon telling it like it is.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Way to be, Wilbon. Football is, indeed, not the glee club.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    That was some good shit.

  • Bears 31
    Jags 13

  • In reply to Viva:

    Bears 31.5
    Jags 14

  • I agree on Forte not overdoing it...cuz the real fun begins after we come off the bye week.

  • Bears - 34
    Jags - 17

  • Perno, Where are your seats at?

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

hey murph, email me at Thanks.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    you got it

  • Confirmed - XXL blog Tees!!

  • In reply to EnderWiggin:

    Confirmed- Type II diabetes.

  • Confirmed kill.

    Bang bang.

  • Fucking A Sac. Common man.

While that was really funny, it was also not cool. Be nice maings!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

haha! I thought it was funny. So I like the 2XL, Sac#1 has never seen me. Just because I like a big shirt does not make me a tub-o. Doing just fine in the health and lady departments, thank you very much.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB - you should hear the comments I dont type.

And often times commedy isnt kind. That new Jeff Ross show is amazing btw!!

  • I get it maings, I am the same way. Just trying to be a nicer gentler MB.

  • i don't want to write lol but i wanted to let you know that I laughed at that comment.

  • Love the height Bradford puts on his bombs. Easier to catch, less likely to be intercepted because of the ball-trajectory. Cutty take note.

And no - that wasn't a fkn tweet.

  • Need to be a DBB reader to get gold like that.
    (inspects fingernails)

  • bradford is gay:

(not that there's anything wrong with that)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I think he looks like the guy who played "Tommy" in Snatch.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    protection from what... zeee germahns?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

fuck this was/is a beautiful movie:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels was such a better movie. Snatch just seems like a cheap remake intended to appeal to American audiences.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Besides, Snatch (2000) was first by seven years my man. Looks like the LSATSB (2007) was the cheap knock off.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Ok, I'm wrong. LSATSB was 1998. My bad.

For the record I loved both movies.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Fucking apostate.

  • what the fuck did you just call me!?!

  • Watched Machine Gun Preacher last night, which is a true story. Really good movie.

Only problem is, now I want to leave all this behind and take up arms with that guy in Sudan.

  • Really really really really looking forward to this Sunday when I can watch football all day without dealing with kids or wife. Just me, puffin' in my lazy boy, with my bears chubby raging.

  • Nobody puffs like the west coast Doc. Come to the SF game and I'll show ya how we roll.

  • Nice doc. I will be bar crawlin in Encinitas with the boys. Boom!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Let's get our game on at some point. I'm free til Monday, possibly Wednesday.

  • wow, look at you. As usual, does the lovely Mrs. Doc have any sisters/cousins/relatives with the same genteel disposition?

I am partying tonight and all sunday, other than that, just catch me online for a SMAW IN THE FACE!!!!

  • With news of the Hulkster's sex tape out today, this just keeps making me laugh:

as does Rocky v Hulk in Italian:

  • In reply to gpldan:

That gif had me dying. Holy jebus that's funny.

  • In reply to gpldan:
