Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears Game Thread

Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears Game Thread

Above is my favorite NFL photograph, maybe ever.

Three final thoughts:

  • My favorite line from Cam Worrell this week was "if the Bears make the Panthers one-dimensional and stop the run, it will be a turnover fest." I agree. Look for the Bears to confuse Cam Newton both before and after the snap. Newton is a second-year player in a new system and has never been vaunted for his intelligence under center. (That's not a shot. It's a scouting report truth.)
  • Win or lose, I really don't want to see Steve Smith with on of those 11 catch, 175 yard performances. I'm just tired of it.
  • I expect the Bears to test Cutler's physical well-being early and if he's not 100% they will put this game on their backs and short passing game. That could mean heavy YAC for Brandon Marshall and should mean another huge game against the Panthers for Matt Forte.

Bear down.

  • 1st to say, damn, it feels good to be in 1st place!

Lies, damn, lies and stats? Suck on this…

“Key stat: The Bears are 4-0 this season when they score first, 3-0 when they lead after the first quarter, and 5-0 when they finish with a positive turnover ratio. Since Week 7 of 2011, Jay Cutler owns the highest winning percentage (.909) of any starting quarterback in the NFL.”

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

    KEY STAT:

Cam Newton is 1-15 , that's right, 1-15 when he turns the ball over just ONCE and 6-1 when he doesn't turn the ball over.

    Cam, you are fucked.

  • 'sup bitches? It's midnight. It's football. Work in 7 hours and we don't care.

Here's another stat fresh off Countdown. Rookie QBs are 1-14 against Dick LeBeau. They can run it, the Steelers can stop the run. Interesting game.

I think we're +13 in turnover differential and leading the NFL too. Atlanta are pretty close and most everybody else sucks.

Can we stop the Carolina run? First in the NFL at doing that. Nice.

Didn't take the spread on Chicago though, Carolina hasn't got a bad D now that Kuechly's in the middle. Could we have drafted him if we didn't beat Minnesota?? I think we were picking 13 if we lost.

Like Tice said, we need to be 6-1. End of. Three yards and a cloud of dust please. Let the D win it.

  • Bear down Bitches!

  • Cam Newton is going to have a long afternoon. I'm betting Tim Jennings has a solid day and will be the biggest benificiary of Newton's throws under pressure. I'm also very much looking forward to seeing how the LB's handle Greg Olsen on the underneath stuff. Lance Briggs should get at least one freight train tackle on him early on an ill advised, poorly thrown ball. This shapes up as a good look at the Bears D doing their thing.

  • In reply to Johnnywad:

    Girly Thor prediction :

Two catches, averaging 0.7 YAC. Will fall over multiple times from Tim Jennings' stares.

However, post-game he'll look fabulous in a Donna Karan halter top, tight black mini and Jimmy Choo slingbacks sweetie.

  • I'm really starting to question the heart, character and toughness of Maurice Jones Drew. First he holds out all off-season, and now he's gonna miss "significant time" to a sprained foot. The dude should man up. The Jags got a big game against the Pack today. Sounds like he's more of a cry baby than a leader.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Fuck that guy. I have no respect for guys that don't respect the game and those that play it at the same level as him.
Fucking twitter? Really MJD? You fucking douche.

  • Waffle's pumped up for some football! Me too. I never sleep good when Bears play at noon on Sunday. I'm already stoked up and tailgating on the couch.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

with Cam being 1-15 when there is one turnover I feel good. I also feel good because Cam is the type of guy that you punch in the mouth and his true colors run quickly. No superman dance for him today except in garbage time. Let's see if he has the audacity to be that selfish and self absorbed when he's down 17 after scoring a TD.

  • He did a couple of weeks ago.

It reminds me of some Lions douchebag getting in Matt Suhey's face after he made a good play and tackled Suhey for a loss. He was show boating and carrying on. Suhey just looked at him and pointed to the scoreboard.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Gotta love taligating on the couch!! MJD went all tough-guy on Cutler after the championship game a couple of years ago. Saying he played with the same injury. Now he's out with a sprained foot. Karma's a bitch. He had numerous chances to apologize for his BS and refused. I hope it's a looooooooooooooong year for him.

  • That IS a great picture.

  • Throwbacks!

  • Can't believe only two afternoon games. Weird.

    And oh yeah,

    BEAR THE F DOWN!

  • Bears really need to do away with this play action shit on the 1st play of the game.

  • Cutler threw into triple coverage trying to find Marshall, poorly thrown ball results in an INT. Jay has to be better than that.

  • In reply to Shady:

Under-thrown. A better ball gives Marshall a chance, even with the triple coverage.

  • Cam Newton meet Julius Peppers.

  • THAT is the hester we know and love shady, canada... catching that shit in traffic and going middle.

THAT is the shit I am talking about baby! BOOM!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    unbeliever

  • In reply to Shady:

    that is such bullshit.

You read the quote buttsteak posted this week.

Hester admitted he was being a fucking puss and that he was going to make a concerted effort to be aggressive again... like the normal hester.

I called what I saw and the man himself confirmed it.

    You sir… are the charlatan.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    hate hate hate hate

  • In reply to Shady:

    you.

    ass.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    you:

"...get hester off returns. I say earl take a kick when there was literally a guy at each side of his face.

Hester is a fucking puss now. He's done. eScared. Fair catches every single fucking kick, even against the worst specials in the game this year, and when guys are 10 yards away from him. He dives down to the ground (even as a receiver), or runs OOB at every chance he gets. He also looks to be about half speed at best.

Bottom line is that he's become a liability. We're going to lose optys back there if we keep him in hoping he'll hit that one big one.

Maybe he’s hurt, but whatever it is, he's toast right now. Put bennet back there... or weems, anyone who’ll fucking try to bring one out of the fucking redzone. I HATE the way hester is playing returns right now, it’s absolutely turrible. Sorry to have to say it."

    yeah, enough said.

  • Ok, this game is about to blow up

  • God I LOVE BM. Awesome man, just fucking awesome.

btw shady... gots my TV back and online baby.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    nice

  • this game is going to be ugly man. They have ZERO run D.

    holy shit.

  • Forte running wild over these chumps.

  • Forte owns the Panthers, doesn't he? Bears should run the ball 30-35 times today.

  • Jebus Conte that was aweful.

  • what in thee fuck was that!?!?!?

    (btw, timmyJ is fucking FAST!)

  • Anybody got a link for the game? The first row site doesn't work in Canada. It comes up with about a million porno links and no broadcast.

  • link?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

That first row link is super choppy. Is it good for y

  • It's been choppy for me too...

  • turrible. that's on cutty.

  • Why couldn't he have just tossed that away?

  • WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?!?!?!??!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Something to do with that first sack injury? Can't get a grip on the ball?

  • If the Bears are going to lose today, this is how they would do it.

  • WTF. Empty backfield on 2nd and 10 for sack. No protection on 3rd down. Shitty play calling.

  • cuttler needs to fucking learn how to throw the ball away man. Just fucking horrible.

They are too bad to beat us, even if we try our hardest to let them. We just need to pull our heads out. This is fucking up our D stats though. *sniff*

  • holy fuck... if you have not seen the steelers unis today, go to nfl.com right now.

They are bringing new meaning to the phrase "swarming d"

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    bzzzzzzz

  • god fucking damn it

  • Bad omen...

  • Never knew Carolina was such a sack machine...

  • Need to get Jay outside the pocket.

    Bear down.

  • Are we trying to lose today? That's what it looks like.

  • this is insane.

Cutty needs to pull his head out of his fucking ass. this is ALL on him.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I dunno MB...you've been screaming for 3 years about our O-Line, and I'm inclined to believe they're going to get exposed semi-regularly, like today. I know Cutler isn't exactly razor sharp since the left-hand smash sack, but I have to go with what you've been yelling at everyone for.

I think our O-line, whether it's Tice's schemes or personnel or both, are just mediocre.

  • mediocre is being WAY overly generous... that said, you can't fucking hold the ball for 10 seconds and not expect a sack.

    Throw it afuckingway cutty!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Yeah, I know. I just think it's a combo of dizzy-Cutty and an O-line that that can only block sometimes. I am not making excuses for Cutty being dumb with the ball, or the stupid play-calling. I see all that.

I just think the whole O-line thing you've been preaching - even when I thought you were over-the-top with it (I was wrong about that) - is the core issue. It has to effect the way Cutty plays.

  • thank you for admitting I am always right

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Well, I've never heard you expound on the effects of super-pacs on rural local elections, so I can't really say always....

  • In reply to MB30SD:

That was not *quite* always, MB.

  • 16 play drive by CAR just gassing the Bears D. Cutler and the offense can't afford another 3 and out.

  • eat a motherfucking snickers cuttler... for christ's sake.

  • Other than the GB game, have we ever had to play from behind?

  • DIABEEEEEETUS

  • Hope the Bears warm up soon.

  • Hey, they can't stop Forte! Let's throw it three times in a row.

    Idiots.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

Check that: They can't stop Forte, and none of our receivers can catch a ball.

  • RUN THE FUCKING BALL!

  • Guy's need to catch the ball, Jay can't throw them any better than that.

  • Is Cutler even on taget with all of these incompletions?

  • like doc said, run the fucking ball!!!

and we better come out of the half the chicago bears, cause I have no idea who this team on the field is right now.

Wow, trap game. We can't lose this gimme game.

  • We've got -9 yds passing.

  • Defense is providing more than its share of fuck-ups as well.

  • MOTHERFUCKER

  • Tim Jennings, you kidding me? wow

  • Tice better get this shit cleaned up, unbelievable.

  • WTF, is the fix in or what?

  • Unbielavable....sad..really sad!!!! Offensive line like a fucking sive!!!

  • How the fuck are we only down one score? That's the most amazing thing about this shit-fest.

  • I'm following on the internet (can't see the game). Is Cutler that bad? Is it Campbell time? Is the D that bad?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

The whole offense looks bad, mainly because the O-line can't block the front four of Carolina. Drops have been bad. Cutler sacked way too much. Play calling bad. Just bad all around.

  • In reply to Shady:

Thanks. I'm getting the play by play on ESPN gamecast but that doesn't really explain anything.

  • Lip reading Cutler into the locker room at the half, "These fucking fans, swear to God." Yes Jay, they're booing this sorry excuse for an offense today, better get your shit together or it'll get a lot worse.

  • Needs to be some SERIOUS halftime adjustments. The Oline isn't getting Cutler enough time to set up in his drop, let alone throw the ball.

Or, you know, Tice could start calling some plays that take advantage of a Dline rushing too hard upfield. So, let's start seeing some screens. Forte could roll off a couple of his patented 60-yard screen runs, and that'd slow down the rush.

Plus, get both OTs some help. They're getting beaten like redheaded drums.

  • Getting Forte involved in the passing game again is a great idea. He's been largely absent from it this season.

  • WOW! J Marcus still sucks, Carimi suckin! Carmi cant play on the right, J Marc cant play the left..........try to flip flop those cock suckers. Try anything! We got Jared Allen comin up, twice! We got JJ Watt comin up. We got Matthews again! Come on Tice!!! Do some fuckin thing!

  • Panthers have such little regard for our offense that they're kicking it to the 40 yard line every time.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

And we continue to prove them right.

  • Middle screen got blown up, and then there was a hold on the play.

Do the O-linemen know that you let your man past on a screen? You DON'T hold!

  • Jesus, we suck.

  • ...Williams throws himself for a loss. Nice.

  • 3rd and long... pretty much a guarantee they'll convert.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

    And they do.

  • Wow. Mike Tolbert just juked both Briggs AND Urlacher out of their shoes. Bad.

  • Game over.

  • Now the defense is sleeping. Oh well..we can't do shit. We're fucked.

  • Funny thing is if Conte didn't go for the cheap shot he could have had an INT.

  • Looked like Conte was going for the catch, he wasn't going for a tackle.

  • that receiver was airborne and landed on Conte.....

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

Conte clearly went in for the hit on LaFell after the ball had been knocked away.

  • This is the same Bears team the thrashed the Cowboys like they were a jr. college squad.

Now, all I'm wondering is if the Carolina Panthers, of all teams, is going to break the record for sacks on Cutler, and beat us with field goals.

How many years have I seen this same season?

  • Good fucking god. Everyone on this team is a piece of garbage.

  • well, Is there anyone one of the Bears receivers that hasn't dropped a pass today, have we missed any one?

  • The McCaskey's should just give the franchgise to Steve Smith. He already owns the Bears.

  • So far they've out gained us by over 300 yds.

  • It sickens me to think what a good offense would do with this field position! C'mon Cutler!

  • That's it. Throw it to the one receiver that can catch the ball.

  • This is just wierd. Just really, really wierd.

Will we be able to say we beat ourselves after this game, instead of crediting Carolina? I'm opting for that. Trouble is, we have to play 'ourselves' 9 more times this season...

  • We'll see now if this team has any grit, to back from being down twelve. If they can't, especially against the Panthers, then they're really no better than anyone else in the league.

  • In reply to tobijohn:

    grit...check.

  • We're only down by 2 scores. We're starting to move the ball. This isn't over. Twice we've needed big plays from the D to spark the O. Who knows?

  • Sure. Why not? Everything else has gone wrong. smh

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

  • Never mind!

  • Another bad omen...

  • Nice catch KD!

  • Who was that guy impersonating Kellen Davis?

  • FUCK JYEAH!

  • BOO-YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No F'n way!

  • They only have 1 time out left. Let's see if the D can close this out!

  • What the fuck was that 2-pt conversion? That shit was ugly.

  • In reply to Shady:

Yeah, looked like Cutler had all sorts of time, too.

  • Jennings is a stud.

  • Even if the D forces a three and out, the O will still need to get a few first downs to run out the clock...

  • All I can say is Fucking A.

  • 13 pts in 8 seconds. better late than never.

  • Was the call on Izzy legit?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    tough, very very tough call

  • Terrible personal foul call.

  • In reply to bajeezes:

    Not surprised.

  • Izzy being held, then shoved into the QB. Total bullshit.

  • Well, Cutler and Robbie have a chance to redeem themselves.

  • Will they give us the ball at the 40 again?

  • Time for a big return. Come on.

  • Fuck!

  • C'mon Robbie. One time my man. One time.

  • Gould.

  • No style points for this fucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FUCK YES, MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THIS SHIT!

  • I'm too old for this scheit...

  • Talk about playing with house money. Sweet lady jeebus.

  • Defense did it again. Tim Jennings MVB today.

  • A few guys here gave up. I said we still had a chance. Gould misses and I give up. The rest, as they say, is history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Victories like this one, where you really have no business winning, usually mean it's your season. Season of destiny, Waffle. Season of destiny.

  • In reply to Shady:

Totally agree! I can remember when the Bears were really shitty and being on the wrong end of one of these games. Really knocks the stuffing out of ya.

  • In reply to Shady:

    yes, good omen!

  • Every year we lose a game we have no business losing. We always have one really shitty game against a shitty team. Let's hope this is THAT one.

  • Bears don't drive the ball at the end of the game without Marshall. What was it, 6 passes in a row to Marshall on that final drive? HUGE.

  • In reply to Shady:

I think Earl had one in there where the entire D tackled him.

  • FFFFFUUUCK

Did that just happen? Am I dreaming? I know no such thing as an ugly win, but that was the fugliest win for the Bears since...I don't even remember.

    I'll take it.

The Fudge stunk it up too. Gabbert out threw Rodgers. No, you're not in Kansas in anymore...

  • Crazy shit. Can you imagine how disheartened Carolina fans are right now. What a pisser for them. oh well, too bad, so sad, sucks to be them.

  • I'll take credit for the win guys. After Robbie flubbed the field goal OMG!!!!!!) I took off my "Lucky" Bears jammy bottoms and went outside to do stuff..(with my pants on, don't want to get either laughed out of the neighborhood or arrested.)...come in at the last 4 minutes and we're ahead. I'll take the win.

  • In reply to MaddBearfan:

    Bless you, my son!

  • In reply to MaddBearfan:

What a STRATEGIC FIELD GOAL MISS that was! It set up the 6-yard shank from their punter which led to the Davis TD !

  • Still can't believe the Bears came out with a win. Wow.

  • I couldn't get a video stream all day. Gave up, and went for audio. Couldn't get that working either, no doubt because of all the nasty ad shit picked up trying to get video. Finally got the audio going with 8 minutes left in the game. Ha.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I had ESPN game cast until the local channel switched to the Bears with about 3 minutes left. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't use first row up here. it's all porno ads and no game.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Canada, do you have Adblock plus extension (no, it's not porn related)?

It pretty much blocks all ads, including those annoying pop-ups for firstrow. I highly recommend it for anyone who uses firefox or opera (and if you're still using IE, you need help).

  • I can usually get the stream working, despite the fact that I use AdBlock and NoScript. Not this time. I blocked, unblocked, reblocked, reunblocked, disabled... nothing. It was ads, or nothing.

I don't mind non-malicious ads if they're text or static pics, but the flashing shit gives me migraines.

  • Actually I'm at work today so I wouldn't even condiser going to first row. I use a mac at home. I'll look into the adblock. Thanks. Usually if a site has a bunch of porn ads I never go back. Not a prude, just not willing to suffer the consequences.

  • On to Tennessee, where the Titans currently have 9 sacks in 8 games this season. Unless their defensive linemen dry up and blow away due to dehydratory hypersalivation, look for them to double their numbers against us.

  • In all honesty I would like to buy tim Jennings a super sweet fruit basket from the DBB. If everyone down to kick in $5 -$10 we should be able to get a fatty.

  • Count me in...

  • My video stream kept freeezing up so had to go to the TV in the last 4 minutes. Sorry I missed the 2 touchdowns but I'll see them on the reruns and highlights.

  • Title this one "(Monday Night) HANGOVER II".

Lovie admitted as much in his post game.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Bullshit. The Bears Offensive line is shit. If something isn't done, we're dead.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

are you a preacher... cause I am a choir.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

No doubt I'm preaching to the prophets where you're concerned, MB. I lost my way for awhile, after the draft and free agency, after convincing myself that Emery & Tice must know something we don't. Surely they wouldn't pass on quality offensive linemen if they thought we needed them. They'd be setting themselves up for disaster.

  • JUST in case you don't believe that "Statistics are for losers"...

    Total yards;
    Panthers, 400+ .
    Bears, 210.

    Time of Possession:
    Panthers: 36 minutes +.
    Bears; 23 minutes +.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I can remember quoting stats all the time back in the late '60's and '70's. DOH! At one point today Carolina had 300+ more yds of O than us.

  • FYI: The Packers were outgained by 100 yard, at home, by the Playing hurt, Blaine Gabbert-led Jaguars but it's tough to overcome a blocked punt for a TD.

  • And now, a word from our sponsor...

  • This games' a good candidate for the NFL REPLAY treatment this week.

    Stay tuned...

  • Glad I missed that game I think.

  • Did ya notice, boys and girls?

The winning drive consisted of SLANT after SLANT after SLANT!

SOMEBODY on this blog, who we know and love, suggested earlier this year that the Bears DISCARD the slant from their playbook.

MY counter-suggesstion was don't DISCARD it, FIX it.!

    I think they fixed it.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I think the defense played five to ten yards off the ball on the last drive.

Slants work well when you have that much space..not that I am complaining or saying the Bears should not run a slant route..

  • Panthers play-by-play man wrapping up the game.

"Jay Cutler, slicing and dicing right on down the field."

  • Just saw some Steelers highlights with their throwbacks and now all I can think of is the old SNL Killer Bees skits. What a silly uniform. The only thing worse were those things the Seahawks wore for a game a few years back....

What's with all the stream this, stream that talk? Just buy Sunday Ticket. All Set... No problem.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

I think a number of guys are outside the US and that, unfortunately, isn't an option for them...

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Sunday ticket requires a PS3 (itself an investment) or buying a dish and a 2-yr contract.

If the NFL would sell Sunday Ticket to stream online, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Better yet, they could just sell streaming access to games on an a la carte basis. I'd gladly pay $10 a game to watch a reliable, high quality, legal stream.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

It's not the money. It's the fact that I live in a rural valley. Drop a bowling ball anywhere within a mile of my house, and it will roll to my front door. Cellphones and satellite dishes do not work here. FIOS isn't availiable. I have 100 Mbs DSL, but it doesn't actually get 100 Mbs. It's not fast enough to stream anything but the pixelated blur that vipbox provides.

My only option involves dealing with the local cable monopoly. But right now, I don't even qualify to buy a football package through them. I would first have to upgrade to their extended assrape service and install their proprietary tuner, which is such a piece of shit, the volume can't be turned down without multi-second lag, which really sucks because every commercial is louder than the last, and every channel is quieter than the one before it, and I don't want any of them, and I'd sit there like an idiot anyway, trying to find something good on, because I'd be paying for hundreds of channels and you'd think there'd be something on.

I don't know how much extra the football package would cost. I looked it up once, but from what I could tell (after about 50 circuitous clicks) there's no guarantee I'd get to see every Bears game.

I could buy high speed cable internet, but I will not install the cable baron's software. I would have to be able to set everything up manually. It would have to work with my hardware and OSes (Linux, XP, XP Pro, or as a last resort, Windows 7 - I use the Win 7 box for important stuff and I don't want to put it on the internet). Then I need an online football package that streams all Bears games. I'm not interested in anything that requires an Xbox or PS3. My PS2 is under an inch of dust already. I might go for a Roku or something like that, if they offer NFL packages.

Any suggestions? I was thinking about NFL Rewind anyway, just for All-22. It's a shame they don't include the full feature in the team packages. And of course, NFL Rewind doesn't stream games live.

  • watching manning at work right now.

Know what the biggest difference between him and cutty is... he knows when and how to just throw the fucking ball away. He's a master at this, cutty is the worst.

  • fb_avatar

I've been a direct tv customer for a decade. I got it as soon as they got the NFL. Had spent too many years wandering for a bar or hotel that got the bears.

  • Exciting win!

BUT what's going to happen vs playoff caliber teams when
    1) the bears don't protect cutler
    2) the bears don't get 1-2tds on defense/special teams

turnovers and returns are a crapshoot lovie, you can't rely on them, especially against the elite teams in the nfl. If they keep playing like this, it'll be an early exit. I don't see this team winning 3-4 straight games against winning teams in January
