Reverend's Rant & Week Four Picks Contest!

Reverend's Rant & Week Four Picks Contest!

The Prize Reminder.

You'll be invited as special guest of DaBearsBlog to this year's Round One Draft Party on Thursday night, April 25th at Cortland's Garage in Bucktown. The prize includes:

  • Accommodation for draft night at The Willows Hotel, Lakeview. To see the hotel, CLICK HERE. I'll also be in the hotel and will gladly take you for a drink at the local spot Monsignor Murphy's if you so choose.
  • DaBearsBlog will cover the open bar for you and a +1 at the event.
  • $50 gift certificate for you/wife/husband/family to any of the Lou Malnati's locations across the Chicagoland area.
  • Two automatic entries into the ticket contest giveaway that evening. (We'll announce the particular game and details once the schedule is released next spring.)
  • A pair of 2012 DaBearsBlog tee-shirts.

The Week's Lines.

Remember:

  • You only pick one team against the spread.
  • Once you select the team they are unavailable to you for the remainder of the season.
  • It is NOT a survival pool. The highest winning percentage at Week 15 will be awarded the prize. If there are ties, we'll decide in Weeks 16 and 17 by increasing the number of games selected incrementally.
  • You don't need to pick every week. But you must make ten selections between Week One and Week Fifteen. If you picked in Week One you do not need to pick in Week Two if you don't like the games.
  • DO NOT MAKE YOUR SELECTION IN THE BODY OF ANOTHER COMMENT. YOUR SELECTION SHOULD BE IT'S OWN COMMENT AND CONTAIN ONLY THE NAME OF THE TEAM YOU ARE SELECTING. (Otherwise it's a terrible bitch for me to tally up each week.)
  • Picks are due by kickoff of the early games Sunday. Picks will only be accepted in the comments of THIS post.

(Home team in CAPS)

New England -4 BUFFALO

ATLANTA -7 Carolina

San Francisco -4 NEW YORK JETS

KANSAS CITY -1 San Diego

HOUSTON -12 Tennessee

Seattle -2.5 ST. LOUIS

ARIZONA -6 Miami

DENVER -6.5 Oakland

Cincinnati -1.5 JACKSONVILLE

GREEN BAY -7.5 New Orleans

TAMPA BAY -3 Washington

PHILADELPHIA -2 New York Giants

I'm off to a flying 3-0 start and on pace to keep y'all from claiming these delicious prizes. (Maybe I'll share the pizza with one or two of you.) I think Harbaugh's Niners are coming to Jersey pissed off and I can't see how the Jets move the ball against this defense when motivated. I'll lay the four with San Francisco.

    Calvinball. Most excellent.

  • Erod out

  • The guy who has to take Cutler's side does so halfheartedly.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Jay is going to shine on Monday if Tice calls a semi coherent gameplan. He may not do that though since he is not an NFL offensive coordinator. Jay will win regardless. Imagine if he had coaching and was in a system more than a year at a time.

  • the article lost me here:

"A matured Romo has earned respect throughout the Cowboys' locker room. The moody Cutler earns eye rolls in the Bears' locker room."

no one eye rolls a guy that has balled with so little and taken so much punishment over the last couple of seasons.

I want Monday to get here so badly so talking heads sucking the teat of the NFL dry for their paychecks can shut the fucking fuck up.

I can't wait for Jay to win and be the same surly prick after the game when some stupid fucking reporter asks a stupid fucking question and gets called out for it.

  • Giants

  • N'awlins +7.5

  • Kansas City

  • Cincy -1.5

  • NY Giants +2

  • Also, if you're like me and can't remember who you picked:

    Week 2: http://www.chicagonow.com/da-bears-blog/2012/09/reverends-rant-week-two-picks-contest/

  • Patriots -4

  • Rams +2.5

  • Oakland.

  • How's about a booby prize for the worst pick record? If so, I'm well on my way to winning whatever it might be. I haven't won a game yet in the DBB auction league and I'm fading fast in the DBB Pick 'em league as well...

  • I wouldn't trust Viva's pick: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/19/obama-has-edge-over-romney-in-three-battleground-states/

Notice the source. Can someone explain why Romney picked Ryan since all he does is try and seperate himself from him? Good luck with the upcoming debates. Bwahahhahaaaaaaa

  • In reply to Crown:

Should be entertaining, somebody better tell Obama thier will be no teleprompter, hehe.

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

I don't really care for either candidate

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

-1 to myself for improper spelling of 'there' in a pseudo-politcally-charged post.

Aw, how mis-guided I was a few hours ago when I posted that, those were the innocent years that i sorely miss.

  • In reply to Crown:

The msm would have you believe the race is over...trust me, Crown, we are just getting started.

I bought Romney @ $2.11 on Intrade earlier this week...good time to buy.

  • Hey Doc, I did figure it out. If I am not mistaken, I think I have been right three weeks in a row.

  • Well done, lad. Myself, I'm 1-2. I'm kicking ass in my two pickum leagues, but can't seem to pick just one a week on here to save my life.

  • Well, since I cannot annoint the Cowboys with my "Kiss of Death" pick, i shall abstain this week.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Please do it, pick the boys

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

Picks contest is Sunday games only.

  • Sigh.

The Rant was off to such a PROMISING start.

Kind of like the White Sox .

Then, it suddenly veered in sheer IMPOTENCE.

Kind of like the White Sox .

What did you THINK Goodell was going to say, Rev?

"Oh, I screwed up. Handled it all wrong" (even though the owners got the deal they wanted and ratings are UP despite longer games and incredible calls /no-calls).
"The media and the fans are COMPLETE right. I shouldn't have this job..."?

Why on EARTH would anybody in their right mind bother to spend ANY amout of time listening to what you KNOW had to be pure, unadulterated, BS, lipservice.

And not the GOOD kind of LIPservice.
Hmmm. "..anybody in the right mind". Probably answered my own question right there, eh?

Rev, if you HAD to address the Beaten-to-death-fake-officials-issue, you should have gone after the TRUE villain in this soap opera: The Ref's Association's negotiator, who, in the end, made a deal he could have made THREE or FOUR MONTHS AGO!.

Instead he has show how big HIS is and proceeds to cost his guys 3 game checks, or about $50K per man, before deciding "Duh, gee-whiz , the owners hold all the cards and really don't give a damn WHO they give a striped shirt and whistle to. Guess I'll settle for pensions for the current guys and go ahead and piss on future generations of flag throwers".

    WHO was their negotiating team?

    Tennessee Tuxedo and Chumly?
    Phineas J. Whoopee wasn't available???

  • Oakland +6.5

  • This just in. Reliable sources report that Al Davis is STIll very seriously dead.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

And as they say, while nails and hair continue to grow, phone calls taper off...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

    Nice.

  • I'd like to take a moment to discuss the NHL situation.

    OK, I'm done.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Al the weird thing is I don't even hear that much about it up here. I'm sure the fanatics are going crazy but the people I work with are just shrugging their shoulders. Maybe once real games get cancelled they will get upset. I watch the Flames once in a while but that's it. Since they don't make it to the post season I don't watch the playoffs. The year they went to the finals the city was nuts.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Grew up watching the 'Hawks with Hull, Mikita, etc. at the Old Chicago Stadium. Saw them play to a 0-0 tie against Bobby Orr - Phil Esposito Bruins. Saw them win a stanley cup final game against Beliveau and the Pocket rocket.

    But they refuse to evolve.

    They insist on remaining NEANDERTHAL.

Continue to allow goons to shorten the careers of their stars (Lindros, Lemieux and now, Crosby). The brawlinis , as seen in olympic hockey, is pointless, unnecessary and fractures the flow of the game. If I'm watching a hockey game and a fight breaks out, I vchange channels. I'm not a wimp, but please don't waste my time.

How does Gary Bettman still have that job?

And the players. You hire Donald "I helped piss away a World Series" Fehr?

To paraphrase FDR: "The only thing hockey has to fear is, Fehr, himself!"

They seem content to remain a minor sport.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I hate to admit it (and I was only a kid at the time) but I'm old enough to remember when Lloyd Pettit announced the Blackhawk's games....

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I lived in Denver when Borque, Sakic and Roy took the Cup. Along with Peter Forsberg, who was probably - at his peak - the greatest hockey player I ever saw.

Then, they went on strike and alienated EVERY SINGLE FAN they had.

The sport is shit. It's not worth anybody's time.

  • In reply to tobijohn:

There was NOBODY better than Lloyd "The Silver Fox" Petitt. HE was the first choice for the National broadcasts back in the 60s, a slot that then went to the Blues' Dan Kelly, and he never forgave WGN and Jack Brickhouse for keeping him from accepting the job. Ignorant Arther Wirtz, would not allow the home radio broadcasts to begin until AFTER the first period was over. Moron.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I almost forgot - speaking of hockey fights, before he moved to Montana, one of my customers was a recently former NHL defenseman named Brendan Witt. He was one of the most laid back people I'd ever met. I mentioned his name to a friend of mine who does follow hockey and he told me the guy was a real thug. I looked up some stats on him and sure enough, he led the league in penalty minutes for at least a couple of seasons. Weird, you would never guess it from meeting him, not even a hint of a violent vibe emanating...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

That was his job. The sad thing is he probably has sustained some brain damage. The NHL is getting better at protecting players in some ways but aren't doing nearly enough. Touchless icing would stop a ton of injuries. Also, any hits from behind (cross checking) where they slam them into the boards should be a game misconduct. Fighting, same thing. It wouldn't take long to clean things up. All the old guys and the neanderthals would go nuts (Don Cherry) but it would be a much better game. Guys are so much bigger and faster a lot of those collisions are brutal.

Al I can't agree with you about Lindros. That dope skated around with his head down all the time. Most of his worst hits were due to that. That's one of the first things they teach you in hockey.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

There are quite a few clips of him on YouTube doing his thing. Here's just one:

  • I've just cursed the Bengals .... sorry.

  • Sometimes I have the hardest time reading Lovie. Does anyone have a feeling one way or the other regarding Forte's probability? Yeah, it is a fantasy question.

  • Tofu is still a FA RB .... as is some guy called Brad Smelley. Poor bastard.

  • Atlanta

  • Oakland +6.5

  • The LA Dragons? As a nod to Chinatown?

    Maybe the Gem Dragons?

Jacksonville's owner is a shyster, he could move the team to LA and call it the Jag-offs. That works for L.A.

The Bucs might also be a candidate for relocation. They've been blacked out of 15 of their last seventeen home games:

  • In reply to Michael L:

Jeff, there is no MIN@DET line. If the line is at 4.5 (which it has been all week), then my pick would have been MIN +4.5...

  • They pulled it off the board Thursday and Friday due to Stafford's injury so I left it out.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

Aha... that's most unfortunate. Was hoping that would be the one... I might've even taken MIN straight up, regardless of Stafford.
