NFL Opening Night Game Thread

As the World Champion New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys step onto the field in the New Jersey Meadowlands, we welcome the NFL back into our lives. There is no professional sports league in the world like it. None close. And the NFL celebrates its return with its version of Christmas Eve. The night before the day. (In the case the day is 72 hours away.) And we celebrate its return.

  • Football is back bitches.

  • And when Football is back, it means the temps in South Florida are only eight weeks away from being tolerable. Huzzah!

  • BTW, the season hasn't even started yet and there's an article in the NFP about the best QB prospects in the 2013 draft. Jeez....

  • 4rth to say, welcome back 4rth phase!

  • I know Jeff is an anti-fantasier, but here a little stat that only one with no sex life can dig up in FF articles.

"Jay Cutler, Bears Show-offy nerd stat alert: Jay Cutler was sacked or under duress (forced to move or alter a throw due to pressure) on 34.2 percent of his drop-backs last season, the second-highest rate in the NFL. (Tim Tebow had more. Of course he did.) But! Cutler completed 47.8 percent of his passes under duress, the fourth-best rate in the NFL. With Brandon Marshall in town, I'm feeling that Cutler wants to take his new toy for a spin, and who better to do it against the Colts, who were tied for allowing the sixth-most pass plays of 20-plus yards last season and were last in interceptions, which is always Cutler's bugaboo. Did I drop a "bugaboo" three players in? You're damn right I did. It's Week 1! All bets are off!"

  • (Raises a frosted mug of 312)

Here's to the Champs breaking Romo in half.

    The NFL is back!

Now only if we can get the REAL refs back it would be perfect.

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

    312, from...

    Somewhere in NY.

    Go Giants...???

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

I thought that was stupid of Goose Island too, brewing 312 in New York.

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

The NFL is not back until Sunday

  • I, for one...

AM READY FOR SOME MOTHERFUCKING FOOTBALL!!!!!!

Starting this year off with 16 confidence points in the opener. I feel sick saying this but, go dallas (lose by 3 or less).

  • I can't wait for real NFL football to start. Best sport in the world, followed by college football. Anyone know why the game is tonight instead of the usual Thursday start? I'm guessing politics got in the way, the DNC convention ends tomorrow.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

    Obama speaking tomorrow.

Republicans will claim "Obama derails football opener"
Democrats will claim "Obama gave America football one day sooner"

  • In reply to TheFifth:

The NFL owes Obama one from a season opener in years past where he rescheduled one of his speeches as to not interfere with a game (or so I've read)...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

C'mon! He re-scheduled because he KNEW he'd get CLOBBERED in the ratings.

  • Jezus Mania.

Maria Carey for NFL 2013 kickoff pregame singer?!?

    What the fuck?!?

  • Have you watched the Grammy's lately Doc? Me neither, but most of the winners and live acts feature songs that don't even use instruments. It's really more "performance art", like high school variety shows.

  • Mariah Fucken Carrey, really? Why does the NFL continually force the lamest most mis-matched singers on us?

Maybe next game Clay Aiken can do the honors...Jebus...

  • Hey, did you hear Slayer is opening on the Pat Roberts show tomorrow?

  • Angel of Death and Expendable Youth are two of Pat's favorite opening songs for bumper music.

  • Yo yo yo, I hate to shill my confidence league after the little flare-up with Ender's the other week, but... since I'm not sure if people caught my post earlier...

Anyone here is welcome to join:

Last year, we had Doc, Irish, Dyl, Ender, and Fifth.... BTW, you can do 2 leagues and copy your picks from one to the other very easily (just a click of a button). Also, if you miss tonight's game don't worry -- you won't be set back (you'll only be out 1 out of a possible 156 points for the week). Enjoy guys.

Oh... and FUCK YEAH, football is back! =)

  • In reply to Michael L:

DYLs league, I just thought it would be fun if everyone got involved.

  • My prediction....
Next years NFL's season opener will be at Soldier Field.

  • Very first carry and your boy Wilson fumbles Irish....from humble beginnings and all that.

Cowboys OL will be worse than ours this year. Was also funny watching Rob Ryan shouting "FUCK YEAH!! FUCK YEAH!!" when the Cowboys got a goal line stand.

  • See that!?!?

PRINGLES made the Madden13 commercial sticking someone. Nice.

(what it didn't show was him in a neck brace on the sideline for the next play.)

  • picking our tickets for the Rams game tonight... heee heee!

  • Wow... Nice slow-mo replay of three simultaneous defensive holding of NYG receivers leading to Ware's coverage sack.

Players are going to get extra Detroit-like with the refplacements running things...

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

PI (or lack thereof) was the biggest problem for the refs in the PS, and it will continue to be so.

On one hand, they call a PI penalty on Peanut even though he was out of bounds, then you get that mugging of the G-men at the goal-line.

  • My observation - the NFL could likely have solved the labor issue with the referees for less than was wasted on that gawd-awful pregame show.

  • I already like this referee better than Ed "I AM THE SHOW" Hochuli.

Hochuli would have managed more "face time" in 3 penalty calls than this guy from Boise, Idaho has had all night.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

So far so good, but I still think it's a disaster waiting to happen.

  • In reply to Shady:

Funny, that's exactly what I think of when I see Hochuli officiating a Bears' game.

  • interesting pic to choose for this. Briggsy and... BANG! BANG!

  • Gotta give the cowgirls credit, especially Rob Ryan, that loud mouth son-of-a-bitch shut the G-men down.

  • In reply to Shady:

When you buy a 50mil CB, then trade up to get a top 3 CB in the draft, it can buy a team some blitzes.

The Gmen looked like the Packers when they played. Dropped passes (Cruz had 3 alone). Can't do that when the other team is blitzing and playing man.

Still early in the season though. Cowboys only choke when it counts.

  • On the other end, the G-men were down to like their 3rd-4rth-5th CB.

Giants run game was dead last previous year, and they looked equally horrid tonight. They only got garbage rushes when the Cowboys were playing prevent.

  • In reply to Shady:

Yeah, credit where credit is due. Super Bowl Champs were 8-0 since then NFL instituted the practice of having them host the opener.

Even, so, Rob, get a haircut and lose a some weight ,you slob.

  • Well I sure hope I have better gifts under the tree on Xmas morning. All Santa left so far was alot of drops by V. Cruz, and a horse collar tackle that kept my defense from scoring! BAH HUMBUG!!!

  • In reply to JoJo Gabosh:

Nobody cares about your fantasy team.

  • In reply to Shady:

    + a lot

  • In reply to Shady:

    +1

  • Helluva start for the 'Pokes. Division win on the road and 13 days to rest up for a second consecutive road game. About as good as it gets.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

On the other hand, for the G-Men it's a division loss, at home and a LOT of time to stew about it and read about it in the POST or DAILY NEWS.

I'm sure the Jets are smiling.

  • propah... ganda

  • This probably won't ending up hurting him...

    http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2012-09-05/drew-rosenhaus-agent-relationship-financial-adviser-nflpa-yahoo-report?icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-main-bb%7Cdl18%7Csec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D201493

But I can't help rooting for it to end the reign of terror of Drew Rosenmouth.

These guys invested in a project that went belly-up? Welcome to the recession, boys!

Even Vegas Casinos occassionally go bust.

The New Aladdin did and before it even OPENED, I believe.

Investment goes bad. "SOMEBODY STOLE MY MONEY". Maybe it was just that. A Bad Investment.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

FYI: The "New" Aladdin had a musch delayed, troubled opening in June of 200 and was in bankruptcy by August of 2003. It is now PLANET HOLLYWOOD..
