The Truly Meaningless Fourth Preseason Game Thread

The Truly Meaningless Fourth Preseason Game Thread

I'm leaving this one sit on the site all day as I work on tomorrow's prediction column. Lovie Smith has admitted the roster decisions have essentially been made so don't expect to see anything of note happen on the football field tonght. Even still, here's a few things.

  • The only conceivably interesting competition might be for the third running back position, as neither Matt Forte nor Michael Bush will be involved much tonight. Can Armando Allen seize the opportunity to start and usurp Lorenzo Booker - a player whose return prowess has placed him in the spotlight?
  • I'd like to see Ryan Quigley have another decent night punting the ball. The Bears were scavenging the waiver wire for a punter this week but I think they'd be making an error by letting Quigley go until they're sure Adam Podlesh can stay on the field.
  • McCown. With word leaking of Brad Biggs that the Bears might consider keeping only two quarterbacks, one wonders if McCown might think he's playing for a roster spot tonight. My opinion? The Bears are insane to carry two quarterbacks. If McCown were on the roster when Cutler went down last season the Bears would have been in the playoffs.
  • I wouldn't mind seeing Corey Wootton make a single play. Just one. Throw us a bone.

I'll leave it you guys. Even though I will be watching, convince me to watch. Give me a reason to turn tonight's game on.

  • On the bright side... just 10 more days until the first game of the season!

  • In reply to Michael L:

There really isn't much reason to watch the fourth game Jeff, unless you are into roster stuff (prediction, critique, tracking, cheering, etc) or into special teams play. Or unless you like rooting for underdogs.

On offense and defense, this game is about as vanilla as you can get, and personnel-wise most of the players are ones you hope will never take many meaningful snaps in the regular season. (The exception being some of the rookies/young role players, like Jeffrey/McClellin/Rodriguez/Paea/etc, to see how their play continues to develop.)

On specials though, you'll likely see some work by the #1s and then a whole bunch of kids playing their hearts out to show up on the #2 and #3 units... because frankly that's what it'll take for most of them to make a team...

  • In reply to Michael L:

If Jeff played FF, watching these 4rth PS games might become more relevant. I already spotted some ultra-beyond-comatose sleepers on other teams.

You guys wanna know who they are? I bet you would!

There's a reason I went 11-2 last year and destroyed the playoffs like Sherman through the South!

  • For me, Torrey Smith will go off this year. Ramses Barden looks like Eli's go-up-and-get-it guy in a pinch. David Wilson could go off even with Bradshaw starting. Russell Wilson looks like he could put numbers up, ditto Terelle Pryor if Palmer goes down. Bush will do better fantasy wise than Forte.

    Cam should be #1 though.

  • Hey everybody, What's Happening?!?

  • In reply to Shady:

    That's what's happening!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Fred Berry! Yes, that just made my day... But I have to say the Cosby Show ranks #1 on my list of black sitcoms. Theooo, Rudyyyy, Vanessaaaa, Jelloooooo!

By the way, if you want me to leave your country just
    ask. #haydiosmio

  • In reply to Shady:

All Re-run references are an automatic 76 blog points.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Hey hey hey! Boom boom!

  • In reply to Shady:

That guy had me crying last night...and then my chest congestion knocked me out. It's a shame - I was hoping to hear more of his commentary.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

  • Woot-woot!

That's the sound the Amtrak makes just before it leaves town, for good.

  • There's an outside chance JT Thomas could play his way past Geno Hayes at strong side.

  • Man, I love me some football, but this 4rth PS game tests my passion. Oh, who am I kidding - I'm watching. Even the 4rth PS game, which is as close to watching a CFL and Arena Football game as I'm gonna get, is equivalent to a play-off game in baseball and b-ball.

  • The CFL games are really different comparted to the NFL. Size of the field and the extra guy really affect the play. Almost all the QB's are mobile and with only 3 downs they take more risks. Not saying it's great to watch, just different. It's fun to go to games. Same atmosphere and tix are about $20. The salcap is so low it sucks for the players but it's great for the fans.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I TRIED watching both, but I just can't get more than a quarter into it, esp Arena football with that wr 10yd running head start bs.

I like that players can still hit though, which is something the NFL apparently frowns upon.

  • I haven't watched much Arena League. The CFL has that running start too. Very distracting. I rarely watch CFL on TV but at the stadium is fun.

  • I'd you're wagering on the 4th game of preseason, you just might have a gambling problem.

  • In reply to Shady:

And if you're having grammar issues, you may just need to go back to grade school. Smh

  • Here's Butch's 53 (listing most likely locks first)

    1) QB Cutler 2) QB Campbell 3)QB McCown
    4) HB Forte 5) Bush 6) Booker/Allen
    7) TE Davis 8) TE Rodriguez 9) TE Spaeth
    10) OLT Webb 11) OLG Spencer 12) C Garza
    13) ORG LL 14) ORT Carimi 15) OT Williams
    16) OLG Rachel 17)C Edwin
    18) WR Marshall 19) Hester 20) Bennett
    21) Alshon 22) Weems

    That's the O.

  • 23) RE Pepp 24) LE Izzy 25) DT Paea
    26) DT Melton 27) DE McClellin 28) DT Toe
    29) ROLB Briggs 30) MLB Lach 31) LOLB Roach
    32)ROLB J.T. Thomas 33) MLB Constanzo
    34) CB Tillman 35) CB Jennings 36) DJ Moore
    37) CB Hayden 38) CB Wilhitte
    39) FS Conte 40) SS Wright 41) SS Steltz

    42) K Gould 43) P Podlesh 44) LS Mannelly

That's D and Specials. Which leave 9 guys on the bubble.

  • Bubble 9

A lot of these players will make this team based on what the coaches decide philosophically. Will they carry 10 D-linemen? An extra LB (cuz of Lach), and extra S - will they have to carry TWO punters? Ride with 2 QBs? Carry a FB? We'll find out on Mon, but these are the guys in play (if not these guys, waiver wire pick-ups)

    1) FB Clutts/H-back Adams
    2) OT J. Browns
    3) WR Sanzen
    4) DE Wooten/Davis
    5) DT Collins
    6) DT Price
    7) CB McCoy/Frey
    8) LB Geno Hayes
    *9) P Quigley

Keep in mind, we'll almost certainly pick up a vet or waiver wire Safety too (since all of our guys behind Conte/Wright/Steltz looked horrible).

  • Hopefully we don't carry 2 punters. I'm thinking Brown ends up on the PS. Also, all 4 DL make it. Everything I read Sanz makes it but if he makes it and Clutts doesn't ... Maybe Walters or the new guy make it (LaGree??) but it looks pretty tenous for them.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I can easily see the Bears keeping 10 D-linemen because of the emphasis on pass rush this season.

Sanz has a good chance, unfortunately Clutts doesn't. Walters and gang has looked bad. I think we're going to shop for a safety in the waiver wire.

I can see how Wilhite might get cut, in which case maybe both McCoy and Frey make it.

That extra roster spot for a punter makes me cringe, but maybe that's why there's rumors floating about the Bears keeping only 2 QBs.

The LB shake out could determine our success this year. If the Bears knew Lach's knee was that bad, they could have been in play for Demaco Ryans from the Texans, or even London Fletcher from the Skins this preseason.

  • "Sanz has a good chance, unfortunately Clutts doesn't. Walters and gang has looked bad. I think we're going to shop for a safety in the waiver wire."

Sadly all of this is true.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Clutts is one of those guys like Polite who will get picked up straight away and succeed elsewhere. Ditto KD. I was originally taken by his athletic grabs and sheer height last year, but his attitude may be in question. No time for that in our Lombardi year ... dude needs to go. Spaeth, Adams, sign Chris Cooley. Keep Clutts and E-rod. I think we can afford to go with one less O-lineman. Edwin is floating around in a puddle of piss when he should be starting. James Brown (HUHH!HIT ME!) is apparently the dog's bollocks at tackle. CW will lose the battle for LT and likey get slotted back in at LG. We can lose a lineman to keep Clutts. Him lead bocking for Bush is just a beautiful thought when you factor in E-rod leading those two. Unstoppable in fact.

    But it's bye-bye Kellen, I hope.

Hester was quoted as saying he plays a little (when questioned for the new Madden), but KD would stay up all night before practice sometimes just playing games. Cutler was clearly incensed by him last week when he walked away after a play where Cutler chewed him out for breaking off on a route (as spotted by OBR). His highlight reel looks awesome, but all is not well with Kellen Davis.

Hope you find yourself sometime Kellen, but it won't be in Chicago.

Sanzy probably makes it because he's the gunner, but I would have loved Joe Anderson or Summers on the roster.

Earl Bennet has looked decidedly fucking ordinary this PS.

Russell Wilson, David Wilson, and Terrelle Pryor are studs.

Sam Bradford has an arm on him. His bullet appears to be faster than Cutler's.

    I can smell real football.

Chicago -10 over Mr.Luck .... doubled with the overs on 40.5 points scored. 3-1. Free money.

  • We need four DEs. The team works on a 3 man rotation on game day - they need someone in the stable in case of injuries. Wooten or Davis will make the roster.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

    davis. fuck wooten.

  • Not sure Wilhite is a lock. He hasn't looked great when I was watching. I think Hayes and Thomas are in a dogfight but with #54 being dinged up both probably make it. I keep thinking Spaeth and Adams are in a dogfight and Clutts makes the roster (probably wishful thinking on my part). Should be interesting.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I'm coming in late and it maybe has already happened (I always come here first for Bears stuff and read new threads all the way through), but Wilhite sucks and does not belong on this team. Especially losing a Clutts for it

  • This is quite possibly the greatest music video of our, or any other generation. Youre welcome MB

  • Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like he should break into "pump up the jam, pump it up" throughout the song.

They are eerily similar (like Jay Cutler and Johnny Unitas similar)

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Nice. I was thinking Sugar Hill Gang's Apache. Jump own it! Jump own it!

  • HAHA! Awesomeness.

I now know how Koreans must have felt when they first watched "Baby Got Back".

I now must go break dance with Yakuza hitmen in a sauna.

  • uuuuuuuhhhgggg:

  • Come on Sac, better than this:

  • I had a protest or two in mind but I gotta let you alone on that one Sac. Good shit - must confess I laughed a bit watching that one.

  • Hee hee

  • I'm wagering that unless Podlesh is 100% guaranteed to be 100% for the Colts game, Quigley Down Under (or some other punter scoured from the waiver wire) will be on the roster for at least 1 week.

Because basically, the Bears get a 1-week bonus man on the roster if they keep Nate Collins. Collins has to serve a 1-week suspension for a drug violation, which means the Bears get what amounts to an extra roster space for that week. If they keep Collins, they can keep Down Under for a week to punt against the Colts. If Podlesh's hip is still a problem, then the Bears can make a cut to keep a second punter on the roster until Podlesh is healed--and maybe that cut is Collins, anyway. But if Podlesh just needs one more week to heal up, this is the way.

Of course, this scenario all depends on keeping Collins instead of someone else.

In other news, I think Clutts makes the final roster. His value as backup LS, given Mannelly's injury and age, is greater than Adams' as an H-back. Also given that Clutts played DE in college (and the CFL?) gives him some more "emergency" flexibility, too. In other words, despite him not being as much an H-back (in a pseudo H-back system) as Adams, I think his deficiencies as an H-back are smaller than his flexibility elsewhere. Plus, Toub typically gets to pick a ST guy or two who might be on the bubble. I see Clutts as that guy.

Rodriguez makes the final roster, too. Dunno if he'll pan out, but there's a lot of upside and Tice can make him into something much better than he is now, I'm sure.

Sanzenbacher makes the roster with Davis cut.

    Frey makes the roster, too.

I have no clue on Allen vs. Booker, but I think Allen has the edge, because despite Booker having return skills, his fumble-itis is a bigger concern.

  • Sounds reasonable. The only real pisser about the Collins/suspension/Quigley scenario is we play again 4 days later so that isn't much extra time for Podlesh to heal up. Based on the preseason, Collins makes the roster. He's looked very disruptive. Price looks like he has a lot of upside once he's healthy. Pretty sure he makes the roster or goes on IR.

  • Clutts being the backup snapper might just save his spot.

  • Oh, and I'm betting McCown gets cut. Big salary, and if Blanchard slips through to the practice squad, he's the emergency 3rd QB if Cutty goes down.

And let's be honest--if Cutty and Campbell go down, McCown isn't going to save the season. Might as well save a roster space for a Safety or extra DT/DE, and develop the future. It's doubtful another team would snatch McCown, so even if Blanchard doesn't make it to the Bears' practice squad, after Podlesh's hip is sorted out, McCown can be brought back in. It'd be jerking him around a bit, but he seems to be a very nice guy--with no other prospects...

  • LaGreed.

  • The only thing about cutting McCown is if we get to the last 2-3 games in the season and we're down to the #3, he might be good enough to win 1 or 2 of those games. Who knows? Hope we never find out.

  • I am very excited for the big game tonight! Just kidding haha. I actually am very bored by the pre season and am ready to start regular season. Like Canadasbear, I too would like for the sturdy Tyler Clutts to make the 53 man roster. I am very concerned about Podlesh. Quigley does not have what it takes to punt in the NFL. Podlesh has had 318 punts in the NFL for an avg. of 38.6 net yards. Quigley has had zero.

  • In reply to BlitzKrieg:

  • In reply to gpldan:

that's actually still kinda funny in a sick way... unlike that fucking packer troll

  • In reply to gpldan:

I guess that might be funnier to me if I knew who any of those people are/were.

  • The EXHIBIXTION season...
    - the NFL's license to steal.

We hope it gives no reason....

...for any Bears to need time to heal.
    Burma Shave.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Well done.

  • Tonight's another exhibition game...
    ...complete with IMITATION referees.

The NFL is being INCREDIBLY lame...

....when they could end this farce for a mere PITTANCE in fees.
    Burma Shave.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Never thought I'd see the day where you would be longing for Ed "Welcome to the Gun Show" Hochuli.

  • In reply to Shady:

You don't recall that in an EARLIER post, a couple weeks back, I I called for a settlement with the specific provision that Eddie "Lookit Me, Lookit Me" Hochuli be told to stay home.

BTW, from age 8 thru High School, guess where he lived?

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Now that you mention it, yeah I remember you saying that hehe. I dunno, where did Hochuli live age 8-18? In a gym? A tollbooth?

  • Jeff, you want a reason to watch the game? It's not the Republican National Convention. That should be reason enough.

  • Why am I watching this garbage? I know it's terrible, but I just. can't. look away.

  • In reply to Shady:

I feel like Dave Chapelle's crack-head character watching this 4rth PS game...

  • Wow. Robbie. That was terrible. Missed left by about 20 yds.

    Laces out Marino!

  • Nice one haul by Sanzenbacher to score a TD. And most likely the 6th WR spot on the Bears 53 man roster.

  • In reply to Shady:

    *one handed

  • In reply to Shady:

McCown did a great job of looking off the safety. And James Brown is stonewalling the Browns back-ups to give McCown time.

Booker is a shiffty mofu. Would be hard to tackle him in a phone booth.

    Some tough decisions coming soon.

  • Man, I know it's only scrubs, but it sure does feel nice to have a clean pocket for once.

  • Nice coffin corner Quigley-Piggley.

  • Indeed. He got that ball to check up like Bubba at the Masters.

  • Another coffin corner by Quigley inside the five. Podlesh better be taking Yoga or something, cuz this guys pinning them deep.

  • Nice battle going on at RB between Allen and Booker. They're both undersized, but they're both showing good quickness and dependable hands.

  • In reply to Shady:

Booker seems like the better runner, Allen better receiver. Allen just looks too small - kind of Garett Wolf-ish.

I'd have to go with Booker thus far.

  • +1

  • clutts better make this fucking team

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    commentators all over his nutz.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

did you see that catch? Dang - pretty athletic for a FB. Everytime I see him, there's someone on the ground around him.

C'mon CLUTTS! I named my FF team after you...the Clobbering Clutts!

2 drops - Golden be gone.

    Joe Anderson has glue hands

  • McCoy has an awesome Reed-like beard. oh, nice Pick-6 too.

  • MCown looking pretty impressive tonight I have to admit man.

  • price head injury... hegone

  • In reply to MB30SD:

PUP? He still needs to get into football shape, but everytime I see him, he's pushing some guy backwards.

    He's just always inj though.

  • holy fucking shit.

  • As I said earlier, preseason games are fun to watch.

  • McCown thinks he's a linebacker. Dude... slide.

  • I got a bad feeling about Clutts.

I think he got so many reps tonight so other teams could see him and make a beeline for him when the Bears cut him. It's a bit of a thank-you and "sorry we can't keep you" present the organization is giving him--an extended audition so he can get an offer from another team.

Which sucks. I like the guy, and think he's a textbook Chicago Bear.

  • Not as much an "audition", I think, but more rather...

"Well, we have to send SOMEBODY out there. Might as well be as many guys as possible with pink slips already filled out."

  • No more pre season!! Lets celebrate through dance:

Hey yo fat girl, are you tickilish?

  • "Exhibition Games" folks.

Pre-season sounds like an endorsement for the NFL's outright thievery that these games truly represent.

    Giants 6, Pats 3.

    Oooooh.Can't you FEEL the excitement!

But ALL the seats, even the ones filled with INVISIBLE fans, were PAID for at regular season prices.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

If the Browns have nobody in the stands for that game, it's bad. It's fucking downtown Cleveland. Just let the homeless in, and the place would have been packed.

Booker T may have a concussion. Which is too bad, because he's quicker to the hole (that's what she said!) and he has more moves downfield.

Golden makes me sad. He has Johnny Knox like speed, but no hands and no ability at all to catch a ball coming in over his head. If his hands go above his shoulders, he'll drop it. He should have been out there every day this spring with the tire machine doing crossing routes and working his hands.

We'll keep 6 wides, and Anderson might just make it.

BM, AJ, EB, DH, DZ and I'm just not sure who else. DZ is in for sure.

Clutts is gone. Lovie is on the ERod bandwagon, and we're going to line up out there with no true FB.

  • If anyone wants to watch some badass music, turn on AXS tv , formerly HDnet. Tedeschi Trucks Band live at Red Rocks, burning up the screen.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

    "Formerly HDnet"...?

I get AXS AND HDnet on Dish.

  • Kyle Adams even play? Jebus. So, we're going from 0 TE Martz to 4 TEs Tice? It's not like we're the Pats, we actually have two 1,000 yd RBs.

Who's gonna line-up in the backfield to clear the path for Forte when the 9ers come to town, Adams?

  • Labor Day might bring a shocker, like Clutts in and Spaeth out, but I doubt it. I'm going to be yelling CLUTTS really loud the first time we're 1st and Goal from the 3 and Bush gets plowed in the blackfield. Did I write that? Freudian slip.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I'm hoping to plow some bush in the backfield soon

  • In reply to MB30SD:

The best pussy is new pussy.

  • Sunday Ticket for PS3

Begins Sept 4. Includes Red Zone. $300.

  • So, I was trolling through the IGN forums (link above) and came across this little nugget. I wonder if it's true? And if so, how downgraded is the quality?

"PS3 streaming is not Hi Def it is Hi Def quality. I have MLB TV on PS3 and a solid internet connection the games picture quality is not even comparable to watching it on your TV through your cable/satelite company. Video streaming is not 1080i not even close. So if you think the picture quality of Sunday ticket on PS3 is as good if you had it through Direct TV you are an idiot."

  • agree... and don't give a fuck.

$300 and no fucking satellite bolted to the outside of my roof to watch every single bears games (except the TWO I'll be at in person this year for the first time ever... hee hee... heeee heeeee) is WELL worth it.

Oh, and I am 100% ok getting rid of Adams OR Rodriguez for Clutts.

Also agree with GP on Booker. Shady and I were talking on PS last night and while allen is REALLY shifty and quick, he's just another wolfe. He got straight up rundupown when he broke that neat little run in the 4th. Booker would have been gone. Sucks he got a concussion... which is the new NFL kiss of death. One and done... no body wants to take the risk on you.
