Free Agency Begins Today (An Open Thread)

Will the Bears land a big ticket item today like Mario Williams or Vincent Jackson?

Will the Bears solidify their backup quarterback spot by looking to Detroit's Shaun Hill or overwhelming former Bear Kyle Orton with long term security? (I still support bringing Rex Grossman back to Chicago.)

Will Phil Emery continue to undervalue talent in the secondary or will the Bears be players for the Finnegan, Carr, Landry...etc.?

If anything breaks I will have a full column up in response. Otherwise you can follow my minute-to-minute thoughts by checking the Twitter feed on the right side of this page or follow me by CLICKING HERE.

  • first to say i won't get any work done once 4pm hits.

  • Today is going awesome.

  • Madden? Want me to hand you a lose for your bday?

  • It was yesterday jackass and come on... the Padawan is ready.

How about a time tonight? That way we don't miss out on FA

  • Oh yeah, Happy Bday Artoo!

Was gonna tell you yesterday, but got carried away dreaming about Super Mario and Pepp meeting up at Rodgers and finally fufilling Karma, McMahon style...

  • Today will be awesome. It will be followed by an awesome draft, and then an awesome season.

  • fb_avatar

    Right on!

  • Is drooling over the thought of having Jackson and M.Williams in a Bears uniform. MAKE IT HAPPEN CAPTAIN!

  • Fresnuts!

  • Fres does a drive by post!

Hey, make a new ESPN account for Fantasy this year, ya bastard!

  • fb_avatar

Wow, the bar is high in this group. Couldn't even imagine that. Let's throw in the LT from Detroit (Bachus?)

  • In reply to Big Mike:

that manning guy would be an awesome backup. let's bring him in.

  • Repost Re: Sean Jensen article.

"Many would argue that the Bears have more pressing needs and that Williams is a luxury. But 2011 is all the evidence someone needs to see, to understand the significance of the D-line to the Bears."

Really, Sean? Most who want Williams will at least concede the obvious, that 2011 is proof that the Bears have more pressing needs.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

pretty sure he's referring to the Giants D carrying them to the Super Bowl. yes, Eli had a great year. but he was having that same great year and the Giants were 7-7 and looking at a second straight year of non-playoff contention.

but then something happened. something clicked on the other side of the ball and their D-line started face raping opposing QBs. only then were the Giants able to make their run.

had they not turned it around, Eli wouldn't been sitting at home wondering how the hell he passed for 5,000 yards and still played in as many playoff games as his brother.

  • In reply to evantonio:

I know what he is referring to. Some other team. A general idea of how things work in the NFL.

Look at what WE had in 2011. Look at what WE did. What did we learn from that? That we need another Peppers? All I can say is I am speechless.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

we learned that injuries can really rape your nostrils.

we learned that jay cutler is much better than we thought.

we learned that caleb hanie is much worse than we thought.

we learned that even a play designed to be between the tackles can take the runner out of bounds.

we learned that dave toub has some funky trick plays up his sleeve but that zachary bowman does his damnedest to ruin them.

we learned that a defense tires in the 4th quarter when the offense is going 3-and-out for 80% of the game.

there were other lessons, sure, but i'm getting sad. and today is FA day. it should be a happy day!

  • It's been said a million times, but if Orton is willing to be the backup to Cutler, I say pay the ugly bastard.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I would be totally okay with McCown being the back up. He impressed me. He is a legitimate back up for us.

Before you guys kill me, I mean, what did he do that was so wrong? He has wheel(for a white guy that is old) and seems to know how play.

I really don't want to over spend at backup qb.

  • McCown was intercepted 4 times in 55 attempts. That's about as bad as Hanie. Hanie only fumbled once; McCown fumbled twice in half the time.

What the Bears need in a backup is someone who doesn't give the game away. If we're going to blow the wad on Mario, we better get a backup who can hit crappy covered receivers while running for his life.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

And I know, Orton isn't the best passer/scrambler, but he doesn't often blow games that the defense can win. We're not going to get him anyway, so what's the point of debating it.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Hanie had a lot of time to prepare. I get your point and I agree but if McCown can throw to crappy wideouts and run for his life decent enough

  • C'mon RII, under Martz, more time to be prepared is a BAD thing.

  • Jeff is all up for bringing back Rex.

  • I've said it B4 and I'll say it again.

Rex is so bad that he made two different teams give up FIVE 1st rounders (and a few 2nd/3rd rounders) for a new qb.

    Rex is the anti-game manager.

  • i could subscribe to that newsletter. would i be happy if he were our starter? heavens no. but i believe he could've guided us to the playoffs last year had he stepped in instead of caleb.

  • In reply to evantonio:

Yes, me too (I could have could've guided us to the playoffs last year had I stepped in instead of Caleb). I'm too old and I can't throw, but I would have known how to tell Martz FU.

  • Saints are trying hard to resign their own.

  • I think it's going to be Mario today and I have no problem with that. I know we need a big time receiver but VJax will be not worth the money and picking up Meachem would be a solid improvement over what is currently on the roster.

Mario could turn the Bears back into the Monsters of the Midway. I want every team that lines up against that D to be shaking because they've been up all night filling out their insurance paperwork and notfiying their next of kin.

It's been bandied around that our beloved Bears have not been in contact with Meachem but technically they shouldn't be in contact with any FA yet, right?

After that the top picks should be spent on the trenches (and it should be done that way every year unless a once in a lifetime player falls into your lap in the first round).

I can see the Bears trading down out of their spot if the players aren't there and the possibility of picking up another quality player with an additional 2nd round pick should not be discounted.

Slow and steady goes the tortoise... I know the Bears are "built" to win now but I would like to win next year too. And the year after that, and the year after that...

  • Lmao, I believed it from the beginning but that new name is funny.

  • Thanks but a disease is nothing to laugh at...

    Damn. Did that sound sarcastic?

  • Not till you said Damn..

  • two words for E-Train:

    GET SOME!!!!!!

  • So - with the Peppers signing... Lovie was at his house at midnight, right?

Is this whole 3pm thing new? I hope Lovie has camped out at the end of Mario's driveway...

Realistically, when can we expect to hear news? Could this guy be signed @ 3:01 or am I looking more at 5'ish?

Please baby Jebus - Mario and Julius sound great together. Like out of a Tarantino flick...

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Around 3:10 someone will say he is on his way somewhere. It better be Chicago.

  • I really want us to get VJax and solidify the receiver position but there will be no complainants with Mario. It'd be one hell of a pass rush! One of the 2 MUST be had.

  • The Bears need to have a dominate defense. Mario would aid us traveling up that road. We can pick up a WR or two but my real concern is STILL our O-line.

I hope we really "fix" this issue with a good draft and maybe a decent pick up in FA. Sure Cutty is a great scrabbler and Forte is excellent but could you imagine the '85 O-Line in front of those 2??? Bortz, Thayer, Hildie, Big VH...I mean if we had just 2 guys like this list we would be fine.

We HAVE TO protect Cutler this season period!

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

The O-line is by no means great but is it really that bad or was it Mike Fucking Martz and his 7 step drops?

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

Sure... That was a big part of it. But you still need those 7 step drop backs once in a while and you still need to push fat 400 lbs defensive linemen out of the way and make a whole. Our O-line is OK at best. One or two big bad asses added to what we have now might drastically change the way our offense performs. What we have now still worries me without some sort of bump up.

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

Some of the DBB members have links to a site that grades out OL. Regardless of formation, it focuses on the matchups, how they did against the swim, bull rush, etc.

Our grades sucked, worst in the NFC North.

    Anyone have that link?

  • In reply to gpldan:

I don't think this is the link you wanted but close enough. Hey Irish, check this out.

  • Not very enjoyable. It's hard to judge the O-line as someone just watching the game. I'll leave it to the professionals, and they say we are pretty pathetic! Thanks for the link

  • Yup, if they sign Mario, they should sign a left tackle straight after that. Anything else and Cutler's going to have a short season.

Plax plus a shock trade down and maybe grab Hill somewhere would be nice.... and affordable.

  • Adam Schefter :

"Chargers will release OT Marcus McNeill this afternoon, according to his agent, Alvin Keels."

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Anybody know his status after the neck injury?

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

This pretty much says it all:

Medically cleared pro bowler with spinal stenosis and a history of neck injury. Too risky unless dirt cheap.

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

The OL isn't very good. It's been plagued by injury. Martz didn't help the situation. Crappy recievers didn't help either.

Will the simple absence of Martz and his %&%$ 7-step drops and %$&%# lack of audibles and %$#% overcomplexity make all the difference? I hope so, but I doubt it.

We should all be very VERY nervous going into the 2012 season with Cutler on the line and no substantial improvement in pass protection. The Bears have started about 18 QB's in the 14 years since Peyton Manning has been in the league. Is that the way we like it, or would we rather protect an elite QB who gives us stability?

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

What is concerning is the GM and Tice seem to think this isn't to much of an issue. I may have just missed it but I haven't read that the O-line is a major priority this off season.

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

No, I get the same impression. They're smarter and more knowledgeable about the situation than I am, so their apparent lack of desperation is comforting to me. But not very, because smart people do stupid shit every day, and this FA/Draft thing is as much about psychology as it is about football acumen. The Bears are perfectly capable of hiding their heads in the sand, seeing what they want to see, holding on stubbornly to things that aren't working, acting on impulse, etc.

Isn't crazy defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Hopefully Emery changes all that. Yes, that is the definition as I know it. 3 hours till the real fun starts.....BEAR DOWN

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

the line was terrible to start the season. downright horrific. then martz got slapped around a bit and adjusted his play calling and, after giving up 18 sacks in the first 5 games, the bears gave up 5 over the next 5.

of course, we all know what happened when hanie took over.

so i'm kind of in line with the front office on this one.

do i want to improve the line? of course. only a shnook wouldn't want to improve the core of the team. but i do think we have more pressing needs.

  • #Texans release FB Lawrence Vickers

  • Anyone hear anything about Barber? I saw they gave a lowball offer to Bell and the front office hasnt said anything about Barber... my uneducated guess is that he stays but he'll be #3 behind Bell. Bell might just bounce though so theyre keeping Barber as insurance.

  • And id this possibly the 1st bonehead move by our new GM?

"The Bears tendered the minimum qualifying offer to running back Kahlil Bell, a restricted free agent, at a cost of $1.26 million. That allows them to match any offer from another club. For about $700,000 more, the Bears could have placed a second-rounder tender on Bell. That way, if another club signed Bell, they’d have to concede a second-round pick as well to the Bears"

So why not just pay the guy another $700k? If someone else wants him we get a 2nd rounder instead of jack squat.

  • Let's wait and see if he gets snatched away. If he does, then yeah, that would be Emery's first fuck up and a bad start.

  • fb_avatar

Or it says they want to keep Bell.

  • Maybe Emery really doesn't want to keep him? If that were the case, this is a way to dump a player without messing up the locker room.

The Bears continue squeezing every penny for FA is my impression.

  • There is no way in hell any team would claim Khalil bell knowing that they would have to give up a 2nd round pick

  • The front office hasn't but reports are that Barber has already moved out of Chicago, expecting to not be back.

    I really like him.

  • That would be a travesty. Bell is not a goal line running back... He should be #3 behind Barber. Barber was the ultimate "change of pace" to Forte. Bell would just be a "change of jersey number and talent level" back.

Convince Hillis that the C on our helmets stands for CIA, and maybe we can sign him here for a starting CIA salary... $60k? "Okay, Peyton - your first mission is to take this microfilm... Yeah, it LOOKS like a football, but it's really the Zapruder film. You must bring it safely and securely into that end zone."

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

maybe brandon jacobs will come in cheaper than barber? lord knows he'll have a chip and a half on his shoulder after getting cut from the giants despite making it known he wanted to be back.

  • fb_avatar

The low ball, just lets them save cap save and match any offer he gets.

  • OJ Atogwe any1?

  • In reply to Shady:

    Sure, I'll take 2.

  • From Jason La Canfora:

"Salary cap numbers for all 32 NFL teams, as of 12:01 ET Tuesday, according to league source."

  • Marques Colston remains a saint.

  • fb_avatar

Crud, was kind of hoping he'd be our guy.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Big Mike, the good news is that there is no way 2012 FA will pass by without us filling a hole that will improve the team. I don't know which hole they will fill but we know it is going to happen.

I choose Williams since Colston is gone and Vjax will command too much money. We either draft WR or trade for Marshall.

Cutty has alot of sway in the organization so they will not fuck him yet another year.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Absolutely. I started the day out with a post that said exactly today. "Today is a great day for fans of the beloved, the team will be better at the end of the day".

I think we are in good position. We've got a good spot in the first round, we've got an extra 3rd round pick. We've got some money to spend and the FA class is strong where we have needs.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

I dont say much, but from now on I will be paying attention to every opinion you have because I think you are about to look like a bloody prophet

  • fb_avatar

Since Carimi only played a game and a half last year, couldn't it be said that it's like having an additional #1 OL Pick coming to the team this year?

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Big Mike, I've thought alot about Carimi and have sadly concluded that he is extremely talented but will be lost to injury. His injury was no joke and they found that out the hard way. He is not even recovered yet.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

but yes, if healthy, he is like having another 1st rounder. I hope that knee holds up.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Waffle 2.0:

No, no, no... Not Columbo V2...
I refuse to believe that. I will continue to believe he will be there at the start of OTAs fully recoverd. Go away cold harsh reality.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Man, you are an optimist, Big Mike. AFAIC, losing Carimi to another knee injury after only 6 quarters last season is not a reason for hope, it's a sign that our former first round pick and best OL may be a bust.

If the Bears don't make an effort to sign Eric Winston, I have to believe they are convinced that Carimi is OK. Or not. Maybe they see value at OT in the draft.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I've not read anything about him not coming back untill your post and Waffles post.

I'm sure they'll take an OT somewhere in the draft. Not many LTs sitting there that can start right away in the 2nd+ round. Although from the comments I've seen, any old draft pick would be better than Webb. Who, I don't think is as terrible as he is being given credit for.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Only the Bears really know the extent of BearJew's health.

If it's questionable, the Bears can prob draft Mike Adams in the 1st or Zebrie Sanders in the 2nd to add depth.

If the Bears don't sign an OT in FA or draft one until after the 4rth round, that would signal that Carimi is medically cleared by the higher ups.

  • I have now come to the conclusion that getting Mario Williams simply cannot happen. I want it to happen, need it to happen but there is one thing standing in the way of us getting him. One of the most unheralded reasons why mega deals like this can be blown apart is simply this:

Peppers and Williams have the same jersey number. Boom.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    Damn it.

    90 and 9D?

    09 (with leading zero)?

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

I say they change the NFL rules, and Mario gets 9 and Pepp gets 0 that way together. 90.

    Problem solved.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Way to get my hopes up from yesterday

  • A starting front 7 of: Peppers, Melton, Paea, Williams, Roach, Lach, Briggs would have to be tops in the NFL. Pretty decent depth on the line if we draft well and Wootton, Toeaina, and a couple others can fill in.

I'd like to see Garcon, Meechum, or Plax plus a early draft pick to bolster our WR corps. Keep in mind Cutty got us pretty far with a crappy line and very average WR group. Forte is money. O-line is coming along. Don't think we need to over spend for V-jack.

Something like: Garcon, Hill/Floyd, Bennett, Knox, Hester, Williams looks strong enough. Big upgrade from last year.

Front office must think O-line is solid. I trust Tice. Probably see a G/C in the middle of the draft.

Signing Williams instantly gives an aging D a chance to be super bowl caliber. Can work on developing the O over the next 2 years, but it's been good enough as constructed to compete in the playoffs... lets not forget. Shouldn't take much to get us over the hump.

  • In reply to Jimwoww:

If you're williams, and the money is all pretty close (probably $15 mil/per) wouldn't you want to play in a 4-3 opposite of Peppers and just rush the hell out of every QB? I mean, you're gonig to see single coverage a lot. I still think Peppers is soooo good they HAVE to double him, even with Williams on the other side.

Or you can go to Seattle/Tampa/SD and no one can ever hear about you again. If you play D in the NFL places Chicago and Pittsburg, where the fanbase loves Defense, must be a top choice.

  • In reply to Jimwoww:

Teams still double and ,I kid you not, triple team Peppers.

These to guys will bring back the Monsters of the Midway feel.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Jimwoww:

All great arguments for him coming to Chicago. Why would a WR want to come to Chicago?

  • In reply to Big Mike:

The strongest canon since Elway would be a good argument. Being the undisputed reciever would also appeal to primadonnas.

  • I bet everyone clicks on here at 3:00 central time.

  • I think you guys are salivating not realizing that in Peppers first year here, Izzy had a great year. His performance fell off last year, and he seemed to stop being tackles to the corner. He lost speed.

So I would imagine Mario would bring that corner speed back. From watching his highlights, it seems he's best at the corner in move, not really a bull rusher. Good at the stunt.

He's going to have the longest career playing end for Old Sauce, where he will get run help every play and really needs to worry mostly about getting his tackle turned inwward on pass plays. Not being in a 3-4 means less time taking inside paths, less plays where he gets cut, and overall a longer career.

That plus what jimwoww said about Chicago being a D driven town, and we'd have to be his best offer if the pay is right.

  • Merry Xmas boys and girls! The Bears having 20M in the bank for FA is like being the child of Bill Gates on Xmas, while Card fans will be lucky to get a lump of coal in their stockings.

  • Top Defensive Players

DE M. Williams. DING DING DING…Bears win FA jackpot!

DE Wimbley. Bills get the consolation prize. Maybe the Falcons.

DE Abraham. Jags? Titans? Bengals? Who’s a 4-3 D desperate enough to pay him?

DT Soliai. Fins lock him up. If not, the Bills might make a move.

DT J. Jones. Eagles really need help at DT.

OLB J. Johnson. Ravens want to re-sign, but maybe Colts get him.

OLB E. Henderson. Vikes retain him.

ILB Tulloch. Vikes will make Lions pay for years.

    ILB Lofton. Falcons re-sign him.

ILB Hawthorne. SEA had a good D, and they know why.

ILB Conners. Philly continues the dream.

CB Carr. Who has loads of $ and no CBs? Bucs. Crazy Cowboys might make a play too.

CB Finnegan. Skins. Don’t know why, just see him there. Rams might show interest.

CB Rodgers. If he’s smart, he’ll stay in SF. If not, Jax/Titans can buy him.

S Landry. J-E-T-S. JETS JETS JETS.

S Otogwe. Chargers create a solid S duo. Pats could make a bid here too.

Footnote. Certain teams are missing because these are the top players which might be too expensive for say the 16M over the cap Cards; other teams like the Pack simply don’t value FA as much.

  • Also, I said I would re-post this, so at the risk of looking like an ass, here you go...

    Butch’s 2012 FA Predictions

    Top Offensive Players

QB Manning. Still sticking to MIA. Broncos a surprising candidate too.

QB Flynn. SEA seems the most logical destination. Browns as well.

QB Smith. Re-signs with the 49ers. Lucky to even start in NFL.

HB Bush. Browns just released Hillis. If Browns wait till April, Jets.

    HB Tolbert. Bengals need insurance.

HB Hillis. The CIA. If not, the Pats fancy reclamation projects.

WR Vjax. Many court, but ultimately cashes in with Bucs, Jags or Skins

WR Colston. Re-signs with Saints. If not, see above.

WR Meachem. The Bears? Most likely, the Pats; they’re smart.

TE Carlson. Broncos need one. Maybe Gmen too.

    OT Gaither. Re-signs with SD.

OT McNeill. Vikes are old at T. Need to protect Ponder somehow.

OT Winston. Broncos thrilled Texans are poor.

OT Brown. Card’s trash is Ram’s treasure.

    OG Nicks. Surprise! Stays put.

OG Grubbs. Bengals got $ & want to build the trenches. Ravens still lurk.

OG Hutchinson. Cowboys also trying to bulk up.

C Wells. Bucs are young and need a PB vet to anchor the team.

  • I fully expect the Girls to try to fill CB in FA or the draft (see above). Maybe even both. They need CBs like we need WRs...

  • Sign Mario and say Garcon. Trade the #19 pick and a late rounder next year or the year after for Marshall. Any takers? I really want to see this team with a legit #1 receiver.

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

If we give up a first rounder for Brandon Marshall..... I will shit a brick of steel.

  • I guess you don't like that!!!!

  • In reply to JerseyBear:

i dunno. if it's a brick of steel it seems to me like it would slide right out. it's certainly more comfortable than shitting a brick made of cement. so many nooks and crannies that could snag one's bum.

  • HE"S OURS!!!

  • It really seems like Emery wants to build thru the draft. I can't see him giving up a first like that - trading down to gain more picks but not trading away.

  • #Bears announce re-signing of CB Tim Jennings to a two-year deal

  • Awesome. Keep 'em coming Artoo.

I knew we couldn't let both Graham and Jennings go.

I guess DJ Moore will now be our nickle and ace SP Teamer, and some draft kid.

  • If the Bears do get M.Williams, that would most likely mean that the Bears are very sold on Floyd or Hill #19.

Don't forget, Lovie dined with Hill, and he doesn't make trips to peddle Nyquil.

  • I am very sold that Emery thinks a lot of Stephen Hill. Just a guess.

  • Only issue there is that Hill might be a little too high at #19.

Both McShay and Kiper have him going around #30.

What I would do if I were Emery is draft Best Player Available (BPA) at #19 (Mike Addams, Barron, Keuchly, Kirkpatrick etc), then wait a bit, and when the rumors start swirling about Hill, trade back in around #27 by giving up a 2nd and lower 3rd to draft him.

    Done and Done.

  • No one really thought Baldwin was worth a 1st last year.

  • True, but Baldwin was a lot more polished (and he's a HUGE primadona).

    Teams who draft after us.

    20. Titans. Might want a WR, but again, Hill is a little high here. Most likely will get a pass rusher.

    21. Bengals. Hill still too high. Plus, they have AJ.

    22. Browns. Hill is a definite possibility here. However, Wright might still be available, and he goes before Hill I think.

    23. Lions. Need LBs and CBs badly. Megatron is enough.

    24. Steelers. Have Wallace and Brown. Nope.

    25. Broncos. Def take a long look at Hill. But they already have a size/speed guy in Demarayius Thomas.

    26. Texans. First real threat here. Given Andre's injuries, they'll can draft Hill here.

    27. Pats. Are also shopping for a WR, but really need help on D. If the Texans skip on Hill, the Pats might be an ideal partner to trade back into the 1st for Hill. They love collecting picks and we want Hill.

    28. Pack. Unpredictable really. They really need D help, but could draft Hill just to piss us off.

    29. Ravens. Have other needs, but they also usu go BPA.

    30. SF. Almost certain they'd draft Hill if he's still on the board.

    31. Pats. Like Pack, who knows?

    32. Gmen. Maybe. But they already have a good WR core.

  • Footnote. Saints traded back into the 1st #28 last year to get Ingram (with the Pats).

The Saints gave up #56 (we have #50) and 2012 1st.

That might be a little too much for Emery. Guess we'd have to hope Hill lasts to at least the 2nd round.

  • Get ready amigos

  • I want Mario, I want Mario...

I want to have a better D than 1985. That's going to be hard knowing we have Rogers and Stafford in our division. Big, beastly, bodacious bookend DE's are what's needed here. Because QB's can't locate WR's when they are flat on thier back or running for thier lives. Draft whatever WR Culter likes, draft the rest of the gaps.

  • say it with me gentlemen:

"....and in a sad turn of events the combination high low tackle of "NFC QB to be named later" by Mario Williams and Julius Peppers resulted in the actual dismemberment of a young and promising player.

    He gone.

  • 30 minutes.

  • I have the patience of diarrhea (not good for laying in an ambush).

Mario will make us more dominate than anyone else in FA. I want one.

  • In reply to Viva:

totally agree mang. Fear boners would be absolutely rampant throughout the league.

  • I think Haugh should have his man card revoked for that article today. I want Mario...

  • I'm going to post info on my twitter then post the article then come here.

Get ready guys.. shit is about to go crazy.

  • The Bears could be the first team Williams visits, and it might be the only team. It’s believed Chicago will go hard after him. The Bears are also expected to pursue wide receiver Vincent Jackson, and it could end up being an either/or type of situation for the team.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

  • Just read: BREAKING NEWS on FoxSports webite - some dude named Melo will not be able to play in the NCAA tourney.

  • @JasonLaCanfora The Bears could be the first team Williams visitsand it might be the only team It’s believed Chicago will go hard after him

  • Hope he is right!

  • Where in thee fuck is MB?

  • Africa.

  • Could be a nice pickup for <$1 million. We need the next Rashied Davis / Sam Hurd guy. And by that I mean special teams stud who occassionally plays WR - not special teams stud who occassionally buys cocaine in chunks 5 kilos.

  • LOVE IT!!!!! Hope this means Mario is on our list. Mario and Marshall on the same day?!?!?!

  • We got fucking Brandon Marhsall

  • Wait, what?!?!?

  • How much did it cost us?

  • In reply to Vicp71:

    2 3's

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

    1 in 2012; 1 in 2013

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

To be more clear, one 3rd this year, one 3rd next.

  • In reply to Vicp71:

both third rounders - EXACTLY what we thought it would.

Holy shit, Emery reads the site.

  • Two thirds baby..we got the BEAST in Chicago!

  • beat me to it. good work ;)

  • In reply to evantonio:

  • OH MY FUCKING BABE JEBUS!^%~!^%$@!^~$@!@~!

  • You are so damn fast, Artoo - and Chicagonow cost me time with this shitheap log-in code.

HOLY SHIT, we got BM for the terms we wanted!!!!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Holy SHIT!

  • Five minutes....

  • Just shit my pants.

  • marshall for 2 3rds = wow

    did not see that coming

  • a third in 2012, and a third in 2013. so we keep one this year. which is nice.

  • Is there any doubt we're going after Williams now?

    Holy fuck I have a fear-anticipation boner.

  • This might stop it:

    Sean Jensen ‏ @skjensen
Brandon Marshall signed a five-year, $47 million contract during 2010 offseason. Due to make $9.3 million next season. #Bears

That's a big chunk of the avail cash - might not be enough left to do a Mario deal

  • Still cheaper than Jackson would have been. I would be fine with a 2nd tier guy and Mercilus in Round 1.

  • Spill the beans Artoo!!!

  • Not bad to start, now we need MARIO!!!

  • one third this year, and our third next we still have a 3rd in 2012!!!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

which one? The Panther's one, or ours?

  • I need to go home and change my slacks!

My anticipation boner just created happiness goo!

    Brogurt, if you will.

  • And now we know why there were no talks for Meachem.

All apologies Emery! All hail thee, Master!

He just saved us about 5M in cap too since Marshall hovers around a very cap friendly 9M/yr.

  • Actually, @AdamSchefter is reporting a third-rounder in 2012 and a third-rounder in 2013. So #Bears still have one 3rd rounder this year

  • finally beat you to it, padawan.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

But I beat both of you ^^^

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I saw that - nice work, Master of the Internets.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    I am Da Mastur.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

But can you hook a worm?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Anyting is DaBaitable by DaMastur.

    Worst. Comment. Ever.

  • Brandon Marshall is AWESOME for both the Bears and Mostly Cutty.

GREAT CHEMISTRY and the hook ups will be rampant!!!

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

Lets just hope he stays on his meds. Welcome aboard Brandon. No I can have a Bears WR on Fantasy that actually earns me some points. He he.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

I won the Fantasy title last year with Marshall! Man, now all you guys (Irish) are gonna be selecting him in the 1st! lol

  • I didn't have the details but I knew before any of you that he was traded lol

  • Oh, don't be that guy.

    Sports news hipster.

"I only like their old stuff"

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

  • Phins phans in phrenzy - think the Marshall trade means they got Manning.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Very Possible...I will not be shocked to see Wayne and or Garcon end up there now either.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I can see that. Manning + Wayne combo. I can also see that they're totally rebuilding their team.

Thnx GB! Withou your puritanical protege heading up MIA, this deal would've never happened!

  • The sad part about the whole deal is we could have had Marshall last year.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

But last year we would have given up two 2nd rounders, no? And with Hanie at qb, it wouldn't have mattered anyways.

    I'm feeling good today.

  • If Cutty's throwing to Marshall instead of Knox last year, can you say Superbowl and no broken thumb?

  • In case y'all missed it above, funny clip of B Marshall calling Orton ugly.

  • xoxo Phil Emery xoxo

Goddam blog, can't post little hearts.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I HEART EMERY t-shirts for everyone!

  • Free-agent safety Brandon Meriweather plans to visit the Denver Broncos tonight.

  • Miami or Denver will get Peyton. Arizona doesn't have the cap space, Tennessee was a courtesy to his college fans.

If Emery couples Marshall with a solid defense signing (does not need to be Mario) I will consider FA a huge success.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Arizona has 72 hours to drop Kolb and free up about 7 mil - wouldn't count them out yet

  • Ariz is 16M OVER the cap.

Even if they free up 7M, that would mean they're 9M OVER the cap, and still would have to sign Peyton and possible Wayne.

  • Mario Williams plans to visit Buffalo tonight.

  • Fuck.

Bills got some coin too. But who the helll would pick the Bills over the Bears? They're practically a Canadian team (no offense Canada) who will forever be a bride groom to Brady.

  • I have to agree...being a Defensive player and the historical mystic of the Bears Defense always being mean compared to Buffalo? It's a joke really. BUT money does talk louder than sense.

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

WTF are "bills," anyway? Dollars? Bird beaks? Skinners?

  • Maybe he hates Tom Brady because of the UGG ads and wants to hit him.

Oh yeah, the haircut too. And the supermodel thing...

There are a lot of reasons.

  • You need to take your Sarcastiholic pills lol

  • In general, Brandon Marshall > Vincent Jackson. For example; Last season: Marshall had 81 receptions for 1214 yrds and 6 TD's from the dog shit QB's in Miami. Jackson had an elite QB and was the only real WR treat. He had 60 receptions, 1106 yards, 9 TD's.

When you factor in the $$ Marshall for 9.4M >>> Jackson for probably 11+ million.

Maybe Marshall will restructure to get that cap # down. We might not be able to get Mario with the cap space left. I wouldn't be too broken up about getting G Nicks from NOLA for $7-8 mil/per as a second option.

  • I meant Mystique...I am too excited to spell at this point.

  • ESPN also reporting Brandon Carr to visit the #Cowboys. PFW's @Eric_Edholm reported in late Feb. Dallas coveted Carr -

#Redskins going after receiver. RT @JasonColeYahoo: Pierre Garçon talking contract with Washington.

  • The Bmarshall trade is HUGE.

    1) Vjax is estimated to cost 15M/yr. Marshall costs us 9M/yr. Saves us 5M approx. in cap.

    2) We not only have a PROVEN WR who can help us win now, we have a proven WR who already has built in chemistry with Culter. Fuck!

    3) We got Marshall for CHEAP. Last year, Marshall cost MIA two 2nd rounders. We gave up two 3rds. When you mix in the extra 3rd we got for Girly Thor, really, we only gave up a 3rd.

    4) This gives the Bears a shit load of freedom in the draft. We really can now draft BPA, which is always a good strategy. Suddenly, guys like Keuchly, Barron, Adams, Kirkpatrick, etc really in play.

    5) We got Brandon Fucking Marshall!

  • Alright please dont stop there Phil. Last years big announcement was Roy Williams and that was it. I want one or two more small floods of congratulatory emails from my friends today.... although I'm hoping Vegas keeps the odds above 20x1 until i can get back up there to lay a bet.

  • Cortland Finnegan talking to the Rams...Makes Sense Fisher knows him well.

  • Hey guys, did you know that Brandon Marshall, Fitzgerald and Roddy White are the only three players in the NFL to have 5 consecutive 1000 yd seasons? That's right, Brandon Marshall, Fitzgerald and Roddy White are the only three players in the NFL to have 5 consecutive 1000 yd seasons. One more time, did you know...........sorry Artoo, all in good fun my man. In all seriousness, I actually remember Rice and Jackson but I forgot the other guys name.

  • I watched nearly every game Marshall played last year (since he was on my FF team).

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, one thing that all Bears fan have to temper a bit is that B. Marshall kinda dropped some TDs. He seemed to fix that by the end, but still, just keep that in mind.

But MIA didn't have Cutler lasering it through the gut, so I'm optimistic that shit won't be an issue.

    Da Bears.

  • From the TwitterVerse...

    Michael Lombardi ‏ @michaelombardi
Details Sounds like the Bears wont get Mario Williams, the deal is getting too rich and appears the Bills are in the lead--with the most money

He doesn't say anything about how much $$$ etc or where his info is coming from but it's still a crappy thing to hear.

  • Bills have 30M and have switched to a 4-3.

But seriously, the god damn Bills?

If he goes for the $ over a chance for a SB, that speaks volumes.

  • Jason Cambell talking to Bears. (per The Score)

  • More from the UnderVerse...

    Michael Lombardi ‏ @michaelombardi
Expect QB Jason Campbell to visit the Bears soon--they are working on a deal.

No idea where the news is coming from, but if it's on Twitter it must be true.

Sorry, forgot to take my pills again.

  • Just a friendly reminder...

    Bengals: $49.9 million under.

    Raiders: $7.4 million over.

    Lions: $11.5 million over.

    Cardinals: $16.4 million over.

  • Bears still have about 17M after adjusting for Marshall contract (per The Score).

  • Take some off for Jennings (probably not a lot). I think we're out on Williams... but still Marshall makes up for it. I think hes a way better fit than Jackson.

  • Slightly more up to date numbers for the other teams right before the bell rang:

  • Yes, this is a little more up to date for the cap.

  • If we're out of the M. Williams Derby, then these guys look good

    OLB/DE Wimbley
    OT Winston
    S Otogwe
    HB Hillis

  • WImbley = good. Kinda old though. I think you'll see Izzy back in the fold for a reasonable deal.

I'd like to see Otogwe or Landry at S. Both are old(er). Kinda like the idea of actually developing some youth in the secondary. I'd rather see them bring in a FA CB.

Probably nothing happens on D until the Williams chip falls. We could still work something out, depending on what we cough up for Jason Cambell.
