Brandon Marshall Acquired by Phil Emery

Brandon Marshall Acquired by Phil Emery

In a stroke of genius by GM Phil Emery (that I predicted and advocated on this site) the Bears have acquired Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins. This reunites Marshall with his former pal Jay Cutler and alleviates any concerns fans have when it comes to this club's lack of a #1 receiver.

A great day. That has just begun.

  • Fuck Yes!!!

  • This tells me Manning is going to Miami. Thank you Peyton, you too are my hero.

  • In reply to JAB1:

Tweet from USA Today beat writer Jarrett Bell:
"Brandon Marshall's agent, Kennard McGuire, told me he'd talked with #Dolphins "for a while" about a trade and it had nothing to do w/Peyton"

  • C'mon Mario!!

  • And one of the 3rds is not even this year. Phil Emery, using the jedi mind trick perhaps? These are not the picks your looking for. Do it again on Mario.

  • Phil Emery is my new hero. What a way to start Free Agency, without even having to go through free agency.

  • In reply to JAB1:

I can't believe it. I've been screaming for this dude since Cutler got here. I'm so happy I could shit.

Free agency was such a strain, talk of this player, thalk of that, should we overpay V-Jack, should we reach for some ducheyne in the first. No. We did what we should have done years ago.

Finally. A man-sized receiver, one that Nnamdi Asomugha called the "hardest player to bring down in the NFL."

I haven't seen any other signings, but this has made my season.

Never realized how physical this guy was. Fights for yardage like a Mofo!

  • Holy fucking shit!

    Bears boner in full effect

  • If Emery can pull off landing Mario I will officially rename it the "Emery Boner".

  • Genius move. Bears would have had to spend most likely over 12 mil a year for VJax and they arguably got a better receiver for 9 mil a year leaving room to go after Super Mario. If Emery can pull that off I think I may have to get lit up tonight.

  • In reply to JAB1:

He should only cost us 6, but he'd cost the Dolphins 9M as I understand it?

  • Phil Emery after the trade... That's how you do it Jerry.. Badda Bing Badda Boom

  • fb_avatar

    I love Phil Emery...

    Here's some fun BMarshall facts...

Over the last 4 years, he has more broken tackles (53) than any other WR, the next closest is 45.

Although, he also has the most drops in the NFL over those 4 years, 51...

But shit, we have a legitimate #1 WR... I can't wait to order my jersey...

  • In reply to Jesse Lynn:

    Calls a spade a spade

  • ESPN also reporting Brandon Carr to visit the #Cowboys. PFW's @Eric_Edholm reported in late Feb. Dallas coveted Carr -

#Redskins going after receiver. RT @JasonColeYahoo: Pierre Garçon talking contract with Washington.

  • BM in the CHI!!! It feels like XMAS finally we have an established #1 WR. Emery just made one hell of a statement

  • Mario visiting the Bills tonight. I am starting to worry.

  • In reply to Vicp71:

    me too...
Why isn't he in Texas having dinner with Lovie...???????

  • Dallas WR Laurent Robinson on his way to visit the Jags. Cowboys will try to keep him #freeagency

  • Jerry Angelo would not have gotten this done at this price.

First we upgraded at GM. Now we're upgrading at WR.

We still need another WR to go with Marshall and Bennett, but whoever that is just got a much easier job.

We still have at least $3 million that would have gone to VJax, plus picks in each of the first 4 rounds. We are doing amazing.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I was not all that hot on the Wallace thing. I am now.

Marshall, Wallace, Bennett with Hester for four-wide - not to mention Forte. A bit scary, if Jay can stand up long enough to get the ball off.

  • In case folks are curious, I'm assuming Jennings is getting less than $2 million this year. Marshall is getting $9.3 this year. Figure the two of them cost $11 mil.

That means we're at $12.5 in cap space. I doubt we can get Mario without hamstringing the roster.

But we do have space for another decent free agent (perhaps a certain linebacker).

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

NB, is that including the extra 1.6 mil added for the Redskins and Cowboys giving money back. I know that's probably still not enough but closer. I think you're right though. Mario might be a pipe dream now.

  • In reply to JAB1:

JAB - No. And I don't think that money will be added this year, the Skins will appeal.

Also, the $1.6 will get spread between 2013 and 2014, not this year, as far as I see. And its up to the Skins and Cowboys how to spread it.

  • In reply to JAB1:

Agree with both of you. Looking like a stretch now. We still have to sign a few of our own guys. Didn't Pep cost close to 40 million the first 3 years? Mario wants that if not more. Doubtful he will be a Bear but I am holding out hope.

  • In reply to Vicp71:

$12.5M Bears cap space MINUS $5M reserved for the draft =

    7M in cap space (conservatively).

That's why Mario is flying out to Buffalo.

QB Campbell is going to cost like 1M.

I say we get OT McNeill for cheap and call it a day.

  • Hey guys, did you know that Brandon Marshall, Fitzgerald and Roddy White are the only three players in the NFL to have 5 consecutive 1000 yd seasons? That's right, Brandon Marshall, Fitzgerald and Roddy White are the only three players in the NFL to have 5 consecutive 1000 yd seasons. One more time, did you know...........sorry Artoo, all in good fun my man. In all seriousness, I actually remember Rice and Jackson but I forgot the other guys name.

  • Question to you guys? Do you keep Roy Williams as a complimentary receiver to Marshall? Personally, I wouldn't mind putting the band back together and going after Eddie Royal too. He should be on the cheap.

  • In reply to JAB1:

I'd have to watch some film on Roy to answer that question more honestly. From my recollection, he wasn't able to generate much separation last year. Maybe worth a look see though.

  • Sweet move! Didn't Phil Emery say I'm going to target playmakers, game changers. Nice start.

  • Miami, I almost forgive you for beating us every time we are on our way to an undefeated season.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Willie, a few Jameson shots might me in order tonight.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

    Abso fucking lutely.

    Cheers, mate!

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Hey Cor, have at least one for me!!!!!!!! Fucking A! We've got Brandon Marshall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Eric Winston to visit Phinz.

  • five 1000 yard seasons and 27 yrs old

Per @MarkBermanFox26, former #Texans OT Eric Winston will meet with the #Dolphins.

  • Pierre Garcon posted on his FB page he's signing with Washington.

  • I think this move was brilliant. Way to go Phil. While everyone else was zigging, you were zagging. That's what I'm talking about Willis!

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

    It's Willie.

  • Jerry was the "shrewd" blind squirell, but it seems now we have the "Slueth". I likery Phil.

  • Garcon to the Redskins. (Schefter)

Jason Campbell apparently going to sign with Chicago (Biggs).

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

  • Holy Crap!!!!!! Way to go Emery! I thought he'd hang onto his picks being a college scouting expert. 6'4", 230 lbs. Irish will be dancing a jig in Thailand. Who am I kidding? I'm dancing a jig in Canada!!!!!!!

  • Garcon signing w Redskins - but who the fuck cares? We got Marshall!

  • Bucs and Eagles pushing to get Carl Nicks in their building first. Tampa lookin to use some of that big cap space quickly it seems!

  • Garcon on FaceBook: Signing with the Skins

  • Sure beats Brandon Manamalaleuanenalelana, eh?

(Why do I have a sick feeling that we are still cutting him checks?)

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Let it go, Willie. It's a new era. Let's never speak of JA or any of his shitty signings or draft picks, again. It's just too depressing.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

  • Sean Jensen

"Good sign for #Bears: Getting texts from coaches/ execs with other NFC North teams who are none too pleased about @BMarshall19 trade."

  • Is Camarillo still available? Give me him in FA and Stephen Hill in round 1 and an order of Super Mario, and I'm good for the offseason.

  • possible backup QB on the way?

@michaelombardi: Expect QB Jason Campbell to visit the Bears soon--they are working on a deal.

  • In reply to evantonio:

That would be great. He's as good as any available backup QB on the market.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

He was great as a back FF QB. Does that count?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Not as far as I'm concerned but I don't play FF. Too complicated for my old mind. Not to mention, it goes against my grain to root for players from other teams (esp Fudgies. Lions, etc.). Man am I pumped about Brandon Marshall. Gotta love the fact Emery operates in a total media vacuum.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Emery worked in Annapolis...loose lips sink tight ships...taken to another level.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

it's the only thing that counts, to be honest.

  • That would be quick. RT @HolderStephen: Sources saying Vincent Jackson to Bucs close to done deal.

  • Will probably have to wait for Mario's decision for more cash or a Super Bowl ring...

  • Looks like Mario "prefers the 4-3", according to PFT.

3 more teams other than the Bills looking to nab him... Well, so goes.

    OLine help! C'mon baby!

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    "OLine help! C'mon baby!"

    Amen Brother!!!

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

  • Marshall is signed through 2014 under 10 mil per year. Great deal!!!!

  • Dear Diary...

    ... Jackpot

  • In reply to Maxx:

  • Gentlemen,

Let me introduce you to our new 1st round draft pick:

  • In reply to gpldan:

Just a great name for a QB mauler.

    I'll take 2.

  • Marshall's a head case and a diva to be sure, BUT he caught TWELVE HUNDRED YARDS worth of passes from the side-show menagerie that was the Dolphins' QB situation last season! Want a good comparison? Larry Fitzgerald caught 1400 yards worth from Kolb & Skelton last season!

  • Artoo, what's Nicks going to cost us?

(I've given up on Mario (the same way I've given up on Dwight Howard (Fuck Dwight Howard)))

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    Fuck Howard the Duck.

He doesn't want to win, just be a celebrity.

Gasol might go to the Bulls though. How about that. Gasol to the Bulls and Marshall to the Bears. Marshall can even play some power forward and help the Bulls beat down labron pro bono.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

He is going to the Bucs. The Bucs are about to over pay for V.Jackson and get Nicks at the same time.

  • Gentlemen,

Let me introduce you to the Bears 2nd round draft pick:

  • Gentlemen,

This just in: Sam Hurd cut bail, is now an international fugitive.

Dog the Bounty Hunter has been retained.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Is that a joke? Where are you seeing either of those facts?

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

    Dude, I'm just kidding. Relax.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I thought many the bail jumping part was true.

Now I'm not even sure you think we're gentlemen...

  • Do the Peckers and Loins know it's Free Agency?

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Lions have bigger fish to fry.

  • Jason Campbell asking for roughly $3M/yr (per The Score).

Dang. Like Mama say, you get what you pay for.

  • superbowl favorites if we are healthy. we are now the best team in the nfl.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to Sean:

Disagree. I love my Bears, and love this trade, but as a realist, Id say wait until we see how Emery's draft pans out. Still alot of holes in the roster, and Im not completely sold yet. But goddamn, what great news today. Brandon Fuckin' Marshall!

  • They're BROKE. No Chanuka for them.

  • Repost (Jeff, give us a heads up when you create a new thread!)

    The Bmarshall trade is HUGE.

    1) Vjax is estimated to cost 15M/yr. Marshall costs us 9M/yr. Saves us 5M approx. in cap.

    2) We not only have a PROVEN WR who can help us win now, we have a proven WR who already has built in chemistry with Culter. Fuck!

    3) We got Marshall for CHEAP. Last year, Marshall cost MIA two 2nd rounders. We gave up two 3rds. When you mix in the extra 3rd we got for Girly Thor, really, we only gave up a 3rd (and Girly Thor).

    4) This gives the Bears a shit load of freedom in the draft. We really can now draft BPA, which is always a good strategy. Suddenly, guys like Keuchly, Barron, Adams, Kirkpatrick, Mercilus, etc really come into play.

    5) We got Brandon Fucking Marshall!

  • fb_avatar

Earlier I was all over this board about Mario Williams, and what a logical move it was. It was seen as DE over WR. But what it was the better guy (Williams over Jackson). Getting Brandon Marshall is a complete shock!!!. Getting him for less than Jackson is a f'n miracle.
Plus 1 to 5 of what you said.
    Hot Damn!!!
    Emery love....

  • I'm in wholehearted agreement and joy-sharing on (5), and the draft will be as it should be, best guy available. It's all good. Even if we blow everything else, it's all good.

  • Wow. I never thought a new GM would actually trade his (precious) draft picks. Emery is the fucking magic man, keep it going Phil!

  • #Buccaneers throwing their wallet around in free agency. WR Vincent Jackson deal is close & they're in-play on #Saints All-Pro G Carl Nicks.

  • Ahhh, the offseason.....when Bears fans can rejoice!

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

Top Bears News: We traded two middle round picks for the probowl MVP.

Top Packers News: Defense gets even worse as Dlineman revealed to be using performance enhancers and gets suspended 4 games.

Yeah, I'd say we're feeling pretty good.

  • Speaking of getting the band back together:

    Shabba is a UFA.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Raggy ?! Scooby snacks?! Wowlf!

  • Appears Mario Williams high bidding price has knocked #Bears out of race for now, but OLs such as Carl Nicks, Eric Winston could be in play.

  • Winston would be a VERY solid pick-up. However, Winston played in a zone blocking scheme, and Tice fancies those mauler type linemen.

But if we get Winston, then Carimi and Webb can compete for LT
(I still don't get why Tice won't let Carimi compete for LT.)

  • fb_avatar

Because he is so good at RT. Why ruin two spots?

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Carimi started all 4 years as a LT at Wisconsin.

I say give the man a shot. If not, move him back to RT.

If it works, we no longer have to worry about protecting Cutler's blind side for the next decade.

    Risk vs Reward.

  • Because J'Marcus Webb is a completely brilliant Left Tackle who has completely re-invented the pass-protection game.

  • OK Capologist, the Bears right b4 FA bell rang had $23.5M according to this link

    23.5M - 9.4M (Marshall) = $15.6M
    15.6M - 5M (Draft) = $10.6M
    10.6M - 2M? (Jennings) = $8.6M
    8.6M - 3M? (Campbell) = $5.6M

So, conservatively, I estimate the Bears have roughly $5.6M in cap space as of now.

  • $3M for a backup QB is high. $2M for Jennings would be similar to the Merriweather deal, but Merriweather was a safety.

  • Without having signed Okoye et al, right?

Ballsy signing of a decent backup QB though. This team is built to win.

  • fb_avatar

Did they actually sign Campbell? I think your draft number might be high without the #3 picks that went for Marshall. Not sure. Hopeful maybe. Could be Forte get's a deal with a lower first year cap figure...

Marshall is a great FA haul. Perfect in fact.. But can't a guy be greedy? I want one other pick up.

  • In reply to Big Mike:

Oh, Bell's tender is $1.26M, but I'm not sure if that was already accounted for in the original $23.5M cap #.

If not, that would reduce Bears from $5.6M to $4.4M.

I am being a bit conservative with the draft #s - $5M is the avg for draft class (and we still have all our picks since we owned an extra 3rd anyways).

    Long story short.

    Butch's Bears Cap Estimate.

    Between $4.4-$7.4M

  • Hearing bears also interested in bush and schilens. #Raiders

  • Dude? Bush? Michael Bush? My dream receiver, now the dream back? That would be too much happiness. That's happiness in a sock.

  • That was the Pubes comment.

  • Red Bryant re-signing with Seattle: 5 years, $35 million, including $14.5 million gtd.

  • Red Bryant is a beast, wish he was a Bear.

  • Today was good. I got on the front page on the

Today was great. We got Brandon Fucking Marshall..

  • #Redskins free agent S LaRon Landry set to begin making his visits; @JasonColeYahoo reporting #Jets, #Eagles, #Lions, and #Bears

  • Cutler, Marshall, Bennett, Forte... that is a dangerous group of playmakers on the Bear's offense. Kellen Davis, Matt Spaeth or Tyler Clutts could all really carve out a key role this year on offense.

In the draft we'll look for at least one more WR (maybe in Rd 2) and possibly a TE, though I don't think we're going to spend big money at TE personally as the position is overvalued this year. Tackle is also, obviously, a position of need.

But this trade probably allows us to spend our Rd 1, and two or three of the picks in Rds 2-5 on the D. That is huge for us.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

We need a bookend for Peppers. I am tired of seeing him getting doubled teamed.

  • My draft prediction of Mercilus at #19 seems to be holding, unless we get Wimbley or some other 2nd tier DE in FA (which I doubt).

TE Carlson might also be an option in FA.

  • Also really like Vinny Curry out of Marshall with our 2nd.

And still high on Travis Lewis (OLB, Oklahoma) with our 3rd.

Both of those would be quality defensive contributors with good upside.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Reasons not to worry about not having a left tackle :

    1. Cutty can sprint right before launching his deep bomb to Marshall.

    2. Cutty can take the snap in the shotgun before launching his deep bomb to Marshall.

    3. Cutty can throw a quick slant to Marshall.

  • #Bears announce Brandon Marshall will wear uniform number 15

  • Why not get the whole band from Denver back together? Eddie Royal is available - 90+ catches the last time he played with Cutler. He's probably pretty cheap after his production the last couple years

  • In reply to bearfantillend:

Going to the redskins with his old coach

  • Food for thought. Is Hester tradeable? What kind of value does he have as one of the highest paid KR's in football now that his role on offense will be diminished? Does anyone know how much Hester will count against the cap this year?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

He isn't hurting us cap wise. He is worth keeping right now compared to what we would get for him.

  • Exactly. And frankly, if this even further diminishes his snaps on offense, it maximizes his value to us on ST...and that is not a bad thing.
Now, we need some value guys to fill in the rest of the blanks at WR. With Marshall on board, I would even be OK with taking a project like Hill at #19, although I'd still rather have Mercilus if he's there.

  • Honestly, if we don't do anything else in FA, I'd be fine. I would still give Emery an A grade for getting a young 6'3 PB WR who has chemistry with Cutler for under $10M/yr.

We can always draft DE Mercilus in the 1st.

In the 2nd, draft BPA: OT Zebrie Sanders, CB Alfonso Dennard, SS Harrison Smith, OG Kevin Zietler, WR (Jeffry, Sanu, etc)

In the 3rd, draft which ever position we neglected in FA and round 1/2.

  • If only Brandon Marshall could bring his buddy Jake Long with him to Chicago.

  • In reply to Shady:

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Ha Ha! Suck it all other teams! There would prob be rumors of "collusion" but the fact that a former Packer would collude with the Bears would be beyond belief! Unless, of course, Philibin was a spurned lover...

  • In reply to Shady:

    Or Ryan Clady.

  • Did anyone else hear Brandon Marshall's charter plane from Miami is 2 hours over due and is reportedly missing?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

I heard it crashed into Jesus and they had to land in DC to scrape Him off the windshield.

  • Bills sign Mario Williams, wow. Good splash by them.

  • That tweet was wrong.

  • I never though Mario was in the cards for us. We still have plenty of cash to make a few more solid moves.

  • Bear Tweets on BMarsh...

  • There u go! RT @danpompei: Bears trying to sign a DE, but it's not Mario Williams. It's former Jaguar Jeremy Mincey.

  • If Emery lands this guy too today he has an absolute A+.

Marshall, Campbell, and an excellent DE? Talk about taking care of business.

  • I'd still draft Ming even if we get a DE in FA. Final piece to the super bowl puzzle. We'll sort something out at LT. Surely Carimi comes over and Lance goes to RT ....

  • #Bears are in pursuit of #Jaguars free agent DE Jeremy Mincey, per @danpompei. Chicago's been expected to add a pass rusher opposite J. Pep.

  • New Tread.

  • just woke up from a jetlag induced hazy nap to a text from my seahawks buddy... I thought he was fucking with me.
