A Startling, Brilliant Beginning to the Phil Emery Era

A Startling, Brilliant Beginning to the Phil Emery Era

Phil Emery assumed the General Manager post of the Chicago Bears under clear blue skies following Hurricane Jerry Angelo. Angelo made some fine moves, we all know that. He traded for Jay Cutler. He signed Julius Peppers. He drafted Matt Forte and Devin Hester. But Angelo was disliked by nearly the entire fan base and disrespected by 75% of the media (the latter caused by a serious of puzzling statements made over years of press conferences). His dismissal was met by the thundering applause of one of America's greatest cities

It did not take Phil Emery long to realize what Angelo had to deal with in Chicago. Before he was hired the fans were calling him the "safe selection". (Hell I was doing that too.) Hub Arkush was arguing on radio that Emery would not have the power to make football decisions due to the presence of Ted Phillips. (An argument never made during Angelo's tenure.) The columnists who shall no longer be named on this site insisted that ownership's decision to retain Lovie Smith meant Emery would be the French president of a Vichy government at Halas Hall.

Wrong. All of us. Fans. Arkush. Columnists. Today Phil Emery pulled off a highway robbery and acquired Jay Cutler the number one wide receiver we've all clamored to see in Soldier Field. Whether it was the actual case or not, Emery landed the Bears a top tier receiver in lieu of the the league's premiere defensive free agent: Mario Williams. He listened to the voice of his quarterback; the man who is guaranteed a presence in Chicago beyond the 2012 season.

Emery could have done this the easy way. He could have cut a large check to Vincent Jackson and put a major talent in navy and orange. Instead he pulled the wool over the eyes of a dozen NFL writers and half a dozen Chicago beat mean who've done nothing but cover pending free agency for weeks. He worked out a smooth trade for Brandon Marshall and now he'll pay a perennial Pro Bowler just 9 million a year over the next three years having given up only a couple of third round draft picks. It was a masterstroke and hopefully the beginning of a brilliant tenure in Chicago for Emery.

Here are some more thoughts on the major deal of day one:

  • Can you imagine what the receiving corps will look like in 2012 if Michael Floyd is still on the board when the Bears draft at 19?
  • Having saved 3-5 million a year by acquiring Marshall and not Jackson, Emery still has wiggle room when it comes to the free agency market.
  • Rumors abound that Jason Campbell will be coming to Chicago to back up Jay Cutler. I've advocated this for months and hope to see it happen.
  • I do not rule Mario Williams completely out for the Bears though the full court press from the Bills is disconcerting. If Williams wants to become the highest paid defender in NFL it will not happen in Chicago.
  • I don't believe the Bears will ignore the offensive line. There are some veterans tackles on the market now and we've seen that approach lead to a Super Bowl run.

Great day.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

The Cowboys are going after him also.

  • HA HA, fat chance, cowboils.

How can you compete with PepperMincey.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Browns are going after this guy now

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

    Peppermince!

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I definitely think they're not going to overpay anybody, namely we're not going after Mario and we're drafting Ming. Ming plus Marshall, now that would be sweet.

Can anyone verify what Our Boy Roy was talking about on his Sportstalk show - that Marshall was due to get paid 9M by the Dolphins, but would only cost his new team 6M?

  • Scroll down Master.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Signed for the Jags. Four years.

  • Following Hurricane Angelo? Damn.. you have never made me loled Jeff.

  • If we land Mincey and Campbell, I can't see us having the cap space to make a run on a veteran tackle.

The only way that happens, I think, is if (1) we release Izzy, (2) we release or restructure Chris Williams, and (3) we sign Forte to some kind of extension that free up a million or so more in the cap.

Those three moves (or maybe even 2/3) would get us the space for a tackle at the $3-4 million mark.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I was pretty sure Izzy was a FA.

  • You're right. I meant that we do not resign Izzy.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Keep in mind though, with Marshall and a vet tackle, I could see Forte being more willing to sign a long term deal for less money. Both of those players will reduce the wear and tear on his body and make the Bears look like contenders for the next 2-3 years.

I am surprised we haven't done anything with Chris Williams' contract yet. That's the last big salary cap anomoly in my view. Its possible Tice really likes what he did at guard, but its also possible we just haven't seen the last cut yet. His contract is for $1.25M, which is fine, but there's a $2.125 playing time bonus as well I think, and that money would be where I would want to trim. Maybe offer him a one year extension for another $1.25M in exchange for dropping the bonus (which he won't collect anyway).

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Or we just plain flat out trade Forte, get some more picks and gain 8M in cap space. No matter what we did, it all gets a lot better overall roster-wise by dealing Forte or Peppers. We fix that tackle spot and it doesn't matter who carries the ball. And what's the reason Carimi isn't at LT and Lance at RT again? What's wrong with that picture?

  • #Jaguars wont let free agent DE Jeremy Mincey go without a fight, despite growing market interest. He was the teams best pass rusher in '11.

  • What do we offer? 3 years, $12 million? 4 years $18 million? I think 5 years $25 million is about the best we can do, but I'd structure it so we're not taking more than $4 million against this year's cap. But am I already being too generous?

  • "I don't believe the Bears will ignore the offensive line. There are some veterans tackles on the market now and we've seen that approach lead to a Super Bowl run."

This would impress me MUCH more than getting a high profile DE. We just need an OT more, plain and simple.

BM and Gaither or another would cause me to give phil a A+. We can get a mauler DE in the draft. Get eddie royal (agree with whomever advocated this last thread), and draft mercilus at #19.

Oh, and can we please stop talking about drafting or FA-ing a TE... please.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Where the fuck have you been?

  • I know right? I missed him so much :((((

  • In reply to ChiRy:

    do I fucking know you?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

  • In reply to ChiRy:

    laaame.

    Packers fan? Beat it kook.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    No, Bears fan, I'm heterosexual

  • In reply to ChiRy:

    questionable.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

You'd be really hard to pick up in a bar MB. I'd still be about four feet away from you, and you'd already be "I don't think so."

Cut down before first contact. Surface to air missiles. Brutal.

  • SA maing. I just spent 26 continuous hours on a plane or in an airport. God that thing fucking sucks. Brutal, but well worth it.

So how's that Erik? See what having a real person and not a fucking cartoon character for a GM can do? How does that shit feel after 11 merciless years?

Now THAT is what I have always talked about as a ‘strategic trade’ a ‘smart, complex manuever’, got the fucking no brainer of paying shitloads for guys everyone wants.

Oh man… BM, JCampbell, and a really good DE (mincey?) would be so much more than an A+ FA start for phil. THEN, we get to his strong point in the draft? It’s like I’m dreaming.

Ps. Dump the girl stuff, get on the PS dude.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Lmao was that hope?

  • which part?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

So how's that Erik? See what having a real person and not a fucking cartoon character for a GM can do? How does that shit feel after 11 merciless years?

  • yeeeees. see how I did that?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

There ya go... RT @ProFootballTalk: League source says TE Kellen Davis will visit the Cowboys, Steelers, and Bengals.

  • shit.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I don't care now. We have our TE. All the passes we were going to throw to Davis we can just throw to the NFL's single game reception record holder. Brandon Marshall. Chicago Bear.

My whining for Marshall is complete. There is closure.

    Hare Krishna.

  • Per league source, TE John Carlson is visiting the Chiefs, but Colts, Bucs, Bears, Vikings, Cowboys, and Seahawks are all pursuing him.

  • It's ironic. TEs have been elevated to a new level, but this is the thinnest TE market (FA & draft) in a while.

Safety too (which take on TEs).

Speaking of S, Merriweather's drawing some interest. You'd think that if the Pats and the Bears let him go (two teams really lacking a S), that, you know, he might not be good.

  • I never saw much in him, tbh. Big hits don't impress me as much as missed tackles.

  • Dude's got two pro bowls. Respect.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    you should do a comparison
    between mecilus and cox
    I have liked both
    but believe fletcher cox
    to have more upside
    he blocks kicks like peppers
has played multiple techniques at Miss. St.
    and is quicker
marinelli would turn him into a beast

  • In reply to huntinbare:

haven't done the maths on that one Hunti. I'll take your word sir.

  • In reply to huntinbare:

Cox is a monster. His 10yd split was almost like T. Harris.

But Lovie loves Melton, and once ole Sleepy backs a player, game over.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Totally agree, BM move was the best could happen. and buying Gaither, as I said moths ago and another complementary WR (who said Eddy Royal?) will have Denver band 4 or 5 years ago in a cheaper way. and paving the way to Mercilus or Kuechly or Poe or Perry if it´s posible. and 2 round for the best corner, WR or OL

  • In reply to elcaney:

I'd be cool if we took Poe if Ming is gone before we pick. Who cares where the line gets collapsed?

  • Great analogy Jeff. If some of you guys have never been through a hurricane, it's like God clears all the trash & debris from the Earth & sea, sends it out in a massive strom, and then the first day after it passes is so peaceful, clear, & sunny. Thanks God.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

yeah it was real clear and sunny
as I looked syward from the couch
after the roof was "cleared away"

  • In reply to ChiRy:

I've been through six. No fun, any of them...

  • We better not sign Mincey. Yeah he had 8 sacks last year but 5 (FIVE!!) of them were against the Colts. No thanks. I'll take Mercilus please and use the money on Jared Gaither.

To put the BM trade in even better light- we got him for a Garret Wolfe and a pool jumper.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

Exactly HB. Great signing hope we never see him.

  • COOL!! everything is taking form!!!

  • JEFF. Give us a heads up when you post a new thread!

A little comment at the end "New Thread guys" would be courteous.

  • "Rumors abound that Jason Campbell will be coming to Chicago to back up Jay Cutler. I've advocated this for months."

Has it been months, Jeff? Time flies. Seems like only today you were saying "I still support bringing Rex Grossman back to Chicago." : )

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Hey crunchy, glad to see you're an equal opportunity buster of the chops.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Hey, once you insult Jesus, no one is too good.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Sorry for insulting Jesus, btw, Trac. But when you said that Brandon Marshall's plane disappeared en route to Chicago, I actually believed you for a moment.

I'm starting to like you Jesus freaks. Praise Jah!.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

All I know is I've been praying for Marshall for a long time. And here he is ... a Chicago Bear. Hallelujah.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Backs every horse in the race. He seems to think he predicted the Marshall thing too, on top of signing V-Jack and Mario, at the same time. Tweet enough, and some of them are bound to happen at some point.

do you think Mario will consider
    the Bears a bit more
    now that we have Marshal
or is he just all about self and $

  • In reply to huntinbare:

    $

I don't think it would be a wise move anyway hunti... too expensive, and there are other options available. It's not like we're thin at DL... or more so than othe areas (OL!)

  • In reply to huntinbare:

I think he likes the Bills. I don't know why but he does. I wish he would consider the bears.

  • In reply to huntinbare:

It looks like he's all about the $ Hunti.

He was on the Texans when they were beaten down annually by a HOF QB in Peyton.

Now, he's going to continue the pattern and join a team that will get beat by another HOF QB named Brady.

Some guys are just a glutton for pain.

  • well maybe rootin-tootin wooten

    and can show some pop

    and maybe mr. phil has

is jerry pouting in a corner somewhere
or is he happy for us

  • In reply to huntinbare:

Not that I believe him (necessarily) but Mario said that he already made a ton of money on his rookie contract. He said he wants to go where he can win. I know, I know. But just maybe....

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Yup, I have dubbed Emery, "The Slueth". Rise Sir Slueth, rise I say.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Emery really came through today. I'm not that worried about the OL anymore. If he doesn't strengthen it in FA, I am sure he will do it in the draft or in trade. There is no way he could hit the gaps like he did today and miss the gaping hole in the OL.

I put my faith in Blast HardCheese:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFHlJ2voJHY

  • He agreed to a five year deal in Tampa: 5 yrs, $55.55 million, including $26 million guaranteed, $36 million in 1st 3 yrs, $26 million in 1st 2 yrs.Vincent Jackson's contract has $26 million fully guaranteed, paid out in the first two years

  • After all that, wasn't as much as I thought he'd get. But still appreciate saving $3-4M in cap space this year.

  • After this, who knows what to expect? Ain't it great!?

While Mercilus or Floyd make more sense, I'd be quite happy with Kuechly.

But when the BM giddiness wears off, there is still the offensive line to deal with. Let's not forget Bears second highest sack percentage last year.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    I hope carimi is fixable
    his recurring problem is frightening
    and will continue to be
until I see a complete season from him
emry seems determined to fix the O
so the line should get some attention
but, he ain't showing his cards to the press

  • In reply to huntinbare:

His playing so close to the vest has its own form of intrigue, eh?

Here's to hoping your spot-on w.r.t. the offensive line thing. But so far, Jennings back, Marshall, and a solid back-up for Jay. Good stuff.

  • message to PE's Brain......Jared Gaither, Terry Porter.........Jared Gaither, Terry Porter.........Jared Gaither, Terry Porter......... Jared Gaither, Terry Porter.........

  • Hey Murph, you out there?

  • The hits keep rolling.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/13/jason-campbell-is-jay-cutlers-new-backup-in-chicago/

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

MB called this one weeks ago, to which I poo-poo'd at the time. But it's a good move, great call MB30SD.

  • In reply to Shady:

    Sha-day. my brother.

Don't try to butter me up maings, I will NOT go easier on you in the jets this week.

Unfortunately, I can't take credit for the Campbell call. I was asking for Batch, but expecting Gerard. I may have listed Campbell in a list of possible though. Pretty fired up with JC.

    Thanks anyway. Alalalalala!

  • It's becoming quite clear that what most likely got the slueth hired in Chicago may have been due to an astute assessment of the steps needed to fix the Bears O. I love it when a plan comes together.

  • #Bears are still in the mix for TE Kellen Davis, according to a league source. Lovie Smith has been effusive in his praise of him

  • Heard one reporter suggest Dez Bryant should give the Bears a call if we lose KD. I'd like to see him stay as he's probably our best pass catching TE, but the current TE market makes me worry about overpaying.

One of the things Martz did well was show the strength of the pass catching running back. I would much rather let other teams overpay on a decent but not stellar TE, and let us underpay for running backs that will serve the same function. If we look for TEs that mainly block, well that's fine.

  • Welcome back to the States, MB30!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

thanks Rabbit. Not sure I can muster a BF learning session tonight, but tomorrow I will.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I rented it for a few days...but not purchased. Miiiiight pick it up since it's on sale direct from Origin at half off...maybe not.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

BTW, renting it is pointless because you have to use a log-in code for the multiplayer or pay $10. WTF?

The graphics, I will admit, are light years better than MW3.
I mean, it's not even close.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

If you guys aren't sure about paying for BF3, BFBC2 is just as good if not better. I'm sure you guys could find a pretty good deal.

  • In reply to Shady:

  • Story behind the release of RT Eric Winston. After five years without a missed start, he had arthroscopic surgery on his ankle this February. Winston says he will be medically cleared in two weeks. But the Texans had cap space to clear.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Eric-Winston-Houston-Texans-waived-for-failed-physical-031312

  • Report: Bills "fully expect" to sign Mario Williams, Robert Meachem

  • Dang, they're going all in.

Super Mario + Meachem would be an A+ grade for me. They already resigned Smith, and have two productive RB and a decent LT.

Can the Bills really take down Goliath finally?

  • If the Bills make those moves and the Dolphins land Manning and crew... I feel bad for whoever is playing the AFC East this year.

Plus the Jets just resigned Mark Sanchez...

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

So you're saying we should feel bad for the Jets....

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

no, no we should not... at all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQFXWugIgP4

    at... all.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I meant sanchez. jesus... I need sleep.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Something tells me Manning isn't going to Miami. Wayne re-signed with the Colts, and we know where Brandon is. Hah.

  • wow...we got the best FA WR who wasn't even a FA. I'd take BM over VJAX or Colston. That 3rd rounder we got for goldie locks actually had some value. Hope Cutty can keep BM focused and out of trouble. Almost shot a load when heard news, and will if we land Super Mario. F*ck all the haters, these are not your old school/parents Bears now. Hope Phil seals the deal now and lands another stud FA. Time to pour a Pint and a short brown on the rocks.

  • In reply to GuinnessPlease:

i just poured a short one myself mainge. Red Breast is my weapon of choice.

  • #Rams and CB Cortland Finnegan have a deal in place, source tells @FOXSports.com. Story coming ASAP

  • Any word on how much Campbell's deal is worth? Word on the street was $3 million, but no official announcement yet.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

    3.5 mil/1 yr.

  • I haven't heard RT Winston linked to any team, have you guys?

I seriously think that Emery might be waiting for the spending spree to die down, then maybe move in for LT McNeill and sign him for dirt cheap.

  • Winston got f-cked but he had a super classy interview with Kirwan and Ryan on Sirius around 5pm...great guy.
They let him go, they claim, because of his upcoming ankle surgery.

  • Winston reportedly is set to meet with the Phins, Chiefs, and Rams.

Dodge Ram commercial came on when I was typing "Rams." So its going to be Rams.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Imprenatrable logic! No "Dolphin Tale" or "Dancing with Wolves" promos I guess...

He seems like a cool guy. Can't sign everyone, I suppose.

  • Kinda worried about TE Davis. Worst case scenario: he leaves. Best case scenario: we sign him at a higher price than he's worth, limiting other options in FA. Not gonna find a good TE in this year's draft (unless Emery has something up his sleeve). And the passing offense Bates/Cutler/Marshall gonna run will need a decent TE.

  • In reply to Papa Sean:

    We can bring back Dez!

Weren't the Bears pretty high on Kyle Adams? 6'4 244.

We still have our 3rd this year too, so we can draft a solid TE prospect there.

I still think if Davis walks we'll take a solid shot at Carlson.

  • Yes! Dezzy!!!

  • Well, lets hope Cutty can keep Marshall happy with enuf passes so we don't hear him bitch about it. Hope Jay can keep Marshall's head right too, and he doesn't have a meltdown.
We're down to needing 2 more WR. I don't see Knox coming back any time soon.

  • In reply to MaddBearfan:

    I wouldn't worry about that.

If anything, Tice will have to remind Culter that he has other receivers.

Remember how he used to lock onto Olsen?

  • please god don't fucking remind me.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Like one of your heat seeking scud missles, I'm sure lol

  • Rams and free-agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan reached agreement on a five-year deal worth about $50 million.

  • Finnegan is a tool, would have been nice to have had him in a Bears jersey and watch him rip off the helmet of Jennings or bug eyes Rodgers. F*ck the fudge.

  • Makes sense. I had Finnegan going to the Skins or Rams. Skins are crazy, Finnegan's crazy - seemed like a perfect match.

Only I forgot how crazy the Skins were. Paying that much for Morgan and Garcon is ballsy.

  • Per Adam Schefter Reggie Wayne re-signing a three-year deal with Colts. Agreement reached.

  • So does this mean that Peyton now follows Wayne back to the Colts? lol

I guess MIA changes their draft priority from T/Pass Rusher to WR too.

  • Irony... looking to replace Marshall with a third rounder...

  • In reply to SC Dave:

They've become us! Here's some quotes from the Fin's blog...

"THANK GOD WE RE-SIGNED MERLING AND MURTHA....they will surely fill the stadium with excitement and jubilation this year!

Ive been a fan of the Dolphin franchise since 1970 and have seen the team dwindle down to the laughing stock of the NFL that it is today. yet of all the miscues in the past decade - the disgraceful way they cut Marino's career, the "Ginn Family" and the Sham Shameron fiasco just to name a few - today they reached the bottom. offense is exciting, it fill the seats and supposedly, thats what the goal was for the team. so what do they do? they trade - at a blatant loss - the best offensive player on the team for a couple 3rd rounders. they lose in the trade because they gave up two 2's for him, and they lose even more credibility with their dwindling fan base.

but all is not lost; they did re-sign the oh so dependable Phillip Merling and Lydon Mothra"

"I was thinking this just never said it.............................we are now the new Detroit Lions............................."

"It MAY have made some sense if they were already loaded at WR, but clearly they're not. The only above average WR is Bess (at the slot). Now they need a #1 and an upgrade at #2 (Hartline is below average)."

    "Dear Fin Fans,

Dont fret, for in another 5-10 years we will understand and realize that our team is now amongst the likes of the browns. We will all finally realize that we just suck and won't get stressed about it anymore, just give it time.

    The future"

Ohhh, the tears, they feed my soul...

  • I have to give Erik (and many others) lots of credit, you've all been calling for Marshall a long while now and by the grace of Emery's goggles that SOB is actually here. Reunited with his buddy Jay.

Now this ain't the '07 Denver offense just yet, there's still some work to be done and adjustments to be made. But Emery is showing how he values and understands the importance of building around the QB. I would bet that he continues in that direction.

  • In reply to Shady:

I almost gave up that dude.

It didn't make sense..why would Peyton not like Marshall

Ohh well, not our problem now.

  • In reply to Shady:

I can't wait to wake up at 3AM and read Irish goin absolutely ape. shit.

    Happy birthdaychristmaschannukakwanzafestivus irish!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I didn't forget about Irish but damn, you are right. That mother fucker is going to be as crazy as I was when it came out.

    Damn.

  • Anyone have his # in Thailand?

Someone should check up on him because when he logs unto the interwebs at 3am, he's going to keel over with a hard on...

  • he already did on the last thread.

  • We got it in doses...Bmarshall, Campbell, Jennings, Constanzo...Irish is gonna get it all in once.

God help him if we sign M. Williams by midnight.

  • god help us all $ (oh, and the fucking packers. Bitches... their little fairytale is over)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Lmao.. I almost cried to that statement.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

  • I thought this was a pretty good move by the bears........but is the 3mil/year cap disparity (from potential Vincent Jackson deal) worth two 3rd round picks? Especially when you have so much room already?

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

    Yes, it's worth it.

    1) Marshall is younger.
    2) He already has chemistry with Culter and QB coach
    3) We really only gave up a 3rd which are always dicey.
    4) Marshalls contract is low risk and can be restructured at any time to create cap space, unlike Vjax.
    5) That extra 3M just came in handy in hiring the best back up QB available in a team that is ready to win immediately.

  • But don't take my word for it...troll through some of these Dolphin comments and see who came out on top...

  • let's not forget we're apparently only going to pay him 6M a year as per Roy's last vid (or one before). He got a bunch of cash upfront and we're not on the hook for the full 9M.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

[Reposted in the right place this time. Mods, delete the errant copy.]

You think the Bears gave up two 3rd rd picks for a lousy 3 mil in cap space? Marshall is the guy the Bears wanted.

Besides, Bears are still in the hunt for Mario, accd to Sean Jensen. An extra 3 mil might come in handy (I'm taking your word on the 3 mil figure; I haven't been following the money).

  • Before I go to bed.... Y'all ready for this?

Marion Barber is still on our team. We haven't cut him yet.

Mario Williams wants to visit on other team before signing with the Bills. Not the Jags... hint hint.

Eddie Royal is listening to offers from from 7 different teams. I have a hunch one is the Bears. He did great with Cutler.

  • royal would be a MONEY pick up. Complete the set phil, complete the set.

  • Emery's one sharp dude.

NO RBs have gotten any action.

Bush, Toblert, Hillis...goes to show how deprioritized they've become.

If we don't sign Tolbert or Hillis, then we gotta keep Barber, in spite of my bitchings.

Roy Williams may also take over Knox's spot by default.

  • Absolutely, Barber's solid. Roy is a nice target. Roy, Earl, BM. Let's roll.

  • Definitely noticed Marion's continuing employment. Been dreading the bad news on him all day. Glad it hasn't come. Hope it doesn't.

  • If the Bills' front office had any sense they won't let Mario leave Buffalo without inking a deal.

  • In reply to Shady:

The Bears are interested in Bush btw.

  • Pubes generally, or the running back Reggie?

  • Micheal Bush. Former Raider.

  • Among the teams that are reportedly still hoping to get an audience with Williams are the Bears and the Titans. Some team will almost certainly make Williams the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, and that team might be the Bills. But it won’t be today.

  • @AdamSchefter: Bears WR Brandon Marshall was involved in another incident that could lead to an NFL review.

    Are you fucking kidding me..

  • Yeah, I've heard rumblings about that.

However, details are vague and nothing's verified.

Even so, Goodell can't lay the hammer down on a guy who has Multiple Personality Disorder, can he?

  • Statement from Brandon Marshalls Attorney Harvey Steinberg regarding Club incident:

"On March 12,2012 Brandon Marshall was the key note speaker at a charitable event in New York. After the event was over he, his wife and close friends attended a function at a local club.
While at the function a fight broke out NOT involving Mr. Marshall or his friends. While attempting to leave to avoid the melee Mrs. Marshall was struck in the face by a thrown bottle. She suffered serious injury.
While attempting to leave and take his wife to the hospital, the mayhem continued outside. Finally Mr. Marshall was able to take his wife to the hospital where she was treated for serious injuries.
Mr. Marshall is hoping to assist authorities in regards to this matter." http://tl.gd/gdqa1o

  • Cap Math:

    $23.5 million before FA

    Tim Jennings - $2 million (???)
    Marshall - $9.3 million
    Jason Campbell - $3.5 million
    Costanzo - $1 million
    Total Spent = $13.8 million

    Remaining = $9.7 million

But we still need to pay for the draft and a couple of our FAs.

My best effort for Mario: If we wanted to skate really close to the cap, we could basically ask Pepp to restructure to bring in Mario. If they both took the same money ($9 million), we could kick in $6M, plus the $3M that Peppers contributes and still have enough for the draft. But that requires Pepp to take a serious pay cut, Mario to take a serious pay cut, and a really tight cap situation.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Also, Bell is at 1.26M (not sure if this is accounted for in the 23.5M)

    So 9.7-1.27=$8.57M

You gotta figure Okoye will cost at least $2M.

    Now we're at $6.57M

We're going to sign another DE, whether it's Mincey or Izzy. Another minimum $2M.

    Now we're down to $4.57M.

Avg draft class costs about $4-5M.

Now we're right at the cap.

And we still have to figure out what we're going to do with Roy Williams, McCown and Barber.

  • I knew I forgot someone. You are correct to take off the cash for Bell.

Barber is already on the roster. As I posted below, McCown will not be resigned (that's what Campbell is for). With the money we're paying Campbell, we'll need to get a rookie for the 3rd spot.

Roy Williams would not be signed under your math - we would have to look to the draft. Also your draft number is a bit off. But still, add it all up and there isn't enough for any more big move.

I think Mercilus is looking more and more like our first round pick. And there is nothing wrong with that.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Isn't Enderle stilll under contract? I realize he was Martz's pet project, but it's one less hole to fill...

  • Bmarsh in little melee.

"Not good news in Chicago as the newly crowned Chicago Bear, Brandon Marshall, has had rumors swirling around him that he may be in legal trouble already. Brandon is no stranger to legal issues, but Bears fans must be banging their heads against walls after hearing the rumor swirl just hours after being traded. According to Jay Glazer this is a statement from Brandon Marshalls Attorney Harvey Steinberg regarding a ‘recent club incident’:

”On March 12, 2012 Brandon Marshall was the key note speaker at a charitable event in New York.

Mr. Marshall is hoping to assist authorities in regards to this matter.”

I believe we speak for NFL fans and especially Chicago Bears fans when we say that we hope this is a truthful statement."

    http://cosbysweaters.com/2012/03/13/is-brandon-marshall-in-trouble-already/

It's not good when you google, "Brandon Marshall in..." and the top 5 search automatically completes "trouble."

  • shoot, I got scooped. Forgot to refresh page. Nevermind.

  • Mario is not coming to Chicago boys. He is looking to bank some serious coin and we just don't have it to give. We filled some serious holes and made some great strides to make the post season. The next step is to address OL.

  • Current WR Situation...

    Workhouse Power Three
    #1 Brandon Marshall
    #2 Earl Bennett
#3 ___________ (Still need third workhorse for split end and slot duty). Candidates: Roy Williams? Sanzenbacher? Draft pick?

Relief and 4+ Reciever sets; Must be ST contributors
    #4 Devin Hester
    #5 Johnny Knox (If healthy)
#6 ___________ (Need another situational WR, Solid ST guy)

So we still have 1-3 spots available depending on the return of our FAs and the health of Knox.

I posted earlier about Kassim Osgood. He seems a good fit for the #6 spot given his special teams resume.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Also, if Knox is not able to go, Eddie Royal would be a solid replacement who can also help out on punt returns.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Also just noticed. Rashied Davis is a FA.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I think it would be hard to carry 6 WRs unless 2 contribute to SP teams.

Marshall, Bennett, Hester aren't going to be gunners.

I can't see Roy on SP Teams, or Knox given that he's wearing a back brace.

That would leave us with Sanzen, but again, he's no Hurd.

I think we keep Marshall, Bennett, Hester, maybe Roy.

Then draft a WR/Sp teamer, and let Sanzen and the rest compete at camp. (most likely IR or cut Knox).

  • Bennett does play specials (remember the big block he put up a couple years back on the TD return).

Roy Williams doesn't play specials, which is probably why he won't be back.

  • On the QB front.

We now have Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell on the roster.

Campbell is an expensive backup and probably will leave in a year (or two) to start somewhere. We need a development prospect to ensure someone can step in when that happens.

It would be tough to justify spending money on another veteran after Campbell's deal, so again rookie QB looks the best option.

I expect the Bears to bring at least two rookies (maybe three) to camp to compete for the third QB spot on the roster. Enderle might get a chance to come back. We could also draft someone (even as high as the third round).

Who would you bring to camp?

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I'm not sure I would draft a qb. Martz might have been a lot of things, but he knows how to evaluate the QB position.

I say we let Enderle compete with McCown for that 3rd position. Who ever wins becomes our 2nd next year if a market develops for Campbell, but hopefully that won't happen (because that would mean Cutler went down).

The market's going to be saturated with QBs right at Campbell's level.

Orton, Leinart, Heine, Gerrard, Stanton, possibly Hasselbeck or even Tebus and a slew of 2nd tier draft QBs from this year like Tannenhill, Weeden, Foles, Cousins...

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

by the way did you see how I did that with E-Train?

  • RT @RavensInsider Mincey's four-year Jaguars deal carries a $27.2 million maximum value w/ $9 million fully guaranteed, per a league source.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

$7 million for the year. Probably right about the upper edge of our price range. Which means we probably offered something like $25 million w/ $8 million guaranteed and the Jags stepped in and outbid us.

If that's all the money we've got left, we ain't getting Mario.

His SIX other encounters with the law will not make Goodell a happy camper, although I still think he gives a little leniancy to a Borderline Personality Disorder and gives him one last chance in Chi-town.

  • When my niece was little, I used to let her play Grand Theft Auto - Vice City on my PS2. If you know the game, you know I shouldn't have let a little 6 y.o. play it.

But she was the sweetest kid. All she wanted to do was drive the cars I had garaged (no grant theft involved) and dance in the nightclubs.

Vice City ain't meant for dancing. Inevitably, she'd dance punch somebody in the face, and a melee would erupt. Someone would start shooting and the cops would come, then the SWAT team would arrive, etc.

Maybe things just snowball like that with Brandon.

Step aside, Packers. Brandon Marshall gives the Bears the division's best offense, Bucky Brooks says.

Brooks is not Nostradamus, but he has a good point.

  • In reply to EnderWiggin:

Let's hope the wonderful things Brooks said about Tice turn out to be true. I can see our offense moving into the top ten in terms of production with Marshall on board but a top 5? Wouldn't that be something?

  • I don't think this nightclub thing in itself is bothersome from what Marshall is going to bring to the Bears on the field, however, it's quite concerning that Marshall is out clubbing in light of his own statements regarding his personality disorder and struggle with depression in the past. The last thing the guy should be doing is drinking. Either his story about depression was bullshit in order to gain sympathy or he is an absolute idiot. Please Brandon, wake up and pull your head out.

And we'll see if the "New Daddy and Husband To Be" can real the reigns in one this one.

    Marshall's laywer :

"On March 12,2012 Brandon Marshall was the key note speaker at a charitable event in New York. After the event was over he, his wife and close friends attended a function at a local club. Finally Mr. Marshall was able to take his wife to the hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. Mr. Marshall is hoping to assist authorities in regards to this matter."

The New York Post, though, has a different story.

In fact, the Post reported in this story that Marshall "cold-cocked" a woman in the left eye around 4 a.m. The newspaper also said that Marshall was being escorted out of the club, after getting into a "fight" with an unknown athlete.

The league surely will monitor this situation.

The Post cited sources as saying the Bears were not aware of the incident before trading two third-round picks to the Miami Dolphins Tuesday afternoon. But, it's believed the Bears and Dolphins were aware of the incident before executing the trade.

Bears and NFL spokesperson weren't available for comment early Wednesday morning.

  • You know Irish, all we need to do now is sighn Plaxico to be accross from Marshall and we can change our motto from "Monsters of the Midway" to "Characters Welcome Here"..... I'm sorry... it just popped to my head...,.I couldn't stop....

  • Sorry.."reel the reigns" not real ...sigh...Got what you wanted Cutty...let the fun begin....hehehehehe

  • Well this is FANTASTIC Bear news, and a couple great early moves by my namesake, Phil EmeryPutMeOnTheBoard! Need to remind everyone that it's the draft that will tell the full story - when we're scoffing at the limited value of two 3rd rounders we're doing so viewing through the historical AngeloGoggles that led to Garrett Wolfe and Michael Okwo. While I agree it was a screaming deal for BM and the absolute RIGHT deal for the Bears, we can all hope that our remaining 3rd rounder this year (think we still have one, right) - leads to something far better than HurricaneA could have ever produced.

A bit worried on the TE front - I'm one of the apparent few who believe that KD has never shown much more than glimpses of being a productive TE. His best days have been in training camp. Not good news that the field is apparently so thin this year.

Also, does anyone really want Roy Williams on this team again after last year? I for sure don't. Marion Barber, YES. He's worth it and while his few brain farts last year created outsized consequences, that was more random bad luck than anything else and I still love the man's fire and passion. He's a real Bear.

Keep going Philly!!! Loving you so far!!!

  • the upside is that Marshall wasn't arrested which means that other people were probably at fault as well. This will blow over but what the fuck was he doing out at 4am? I'm a nice guy but you allow me to drink for 9 hours and i'm sure i could do something stupid.

  • I hope he didn't punch a girl.

  • In reply to Viva:

It wouldn't be the 1st time he was accused of doing so!

  • Marshall needs to be locked in his house (without the wife or girlfriend) only to be let out for games and practice!
