Quick Hit Responses to the Phil Emery Press Conference

Quick Hit Responses to the Phil Emery Press Conference

Here are my reactions to Phil Emery's introductory press conference at Halas Hall:

  • Reverend said it to me (we spent presser on IM) and he was right. Emery was far more comfortable responding to questions from reporters than he was delivering his prepared statement. It took Emery some time to get through the emotion of the moment, I think.
  • It was very evident that the awkwardness Jerry often displayed with the media will no longer be visible from the Bears GM. Emery basically told the press he won't tell them anything and called out a reporter for forcing two question into a one question slot. I dig it. This media needs to be slapped and Emery seems like a guy ready to do some slapping.
  • Emery seems like a tough boss. The guy who walks into your office and says, "You need to be better" and it hurts you profoundly to hear it.
  • It sure sounded like Phil Emery intends to sign Matt Forte to a long-term deal.
  • I don't have a counter here but I'd bet he said "playmaker" 20 times. Take from that what you will but I think he was sending a clear message about getting Jay Cutler some weapons.
  • Ted Phillips said he was looking for a GM to build the Bears through the draft and Emery made it clear the draft is going to be the focal point of the front office.
  • Jerry Angelo often said strange things but reports were rampant that Angelo disregarded the opinions of scouts and relied on his own experience on draft day. Emery made it clear he is going to trust his men in the field.
  • My favorite quote. "This is a big man's game"
  • Emery is going to build a scouting department that mirrors the Pats' scouting department. Let's hope they are as productive as the Pats scouts used to be.
  • Emery is clearly most heavily influenced by his time at the Naval Academy. He mentioned all the GMs he's worked with a few times but almost waxes poetic when he gets into his time at Navy.
  • Bears fans will love this sentence: "I'm a very different person than Jerry". When asked about whether his hiring is a sign of status quo at Halas Hall, Emery went out of his way to point out the differences between himself and Jerry Angelo.
  • A couple writers kept trying to press Emery on the question of control, asking if he had full control. He handled the question with class by acknowledging his DOES have full control but repeating, "that's now where my heads at."

I liked the Phil Emery I saw in this press conference. He's not a comic. He's not Spalding Gray. He is a tough guy, a leader, organized and methodical. I'm excited to see what he does this spring.

  • what a man says and what a man does are two completely different things. let's hope the FIRST pick from his first draft wins rookie of the year.

    that would be nice.

  • FIRST!

  • In reply to deemoney23:

first what? first to respond second?

  • In reply to evantonio:

    hee hee

  • In reply to deemoney23:

Phweep! False start. Five yard penalty and a rusty nail through the old Johnson.

  • Okay so maybe not, but anyway... I like the idea that we are moving forward with a guy who hopefully has a clue as to how to draft for this franchise going forward. I like the idea of hopefully signing Forte to a long term deal and also getting a "playmaker" for Cutty to throw too on offense. I'd also like to see some depth added at key positions for our aging core on D.

  • In reply to deemoney23:

agree on all points. one thing i wonder about is the quote jeff highlighted: "this is a big man's game."

does this mean emery would like to return to the ted washington/keith traylor-molded DTs, or is he talking more about a nice 6'4" receiver?

all answers will come in time, but i don't want to wait. waiting sucks.

  • In reply to deemoney23:

#1 WR, OT(L), DE, back up QB in FA.... the first three need to be bigger money signings in order to get the right guys.

    1 - OL
    2 - DB(FS) or LB
    3a - #2WR
    3b - LB or DB(CB)
    4 - OL
    5 - DL
    6 - RB
    7 - DB/OL/LB - whichever is best value

Look, we'll get a clue whether this guy is worth a shit after this offseason. One offseason won't give us the real answer, but we'll have an idea whether he is garbage JA#2 or the real deal.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

And who, pray tell, is the left tackle that we're supposed to be getting in FA?

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

That was a wishlist, nit research NB. I haven't looked at available OLTs yet.... I'll leave that to you. Get the goods.

(if there isn't one available, I'll take the best OL guy at any spot)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Ok, how about one of these guys then NB: http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2012OT.php

ANY of them are better than webb. and I am not a webb supporter. I get it was hit first year there, but we can't afford to try a project on cutty's blindside. We need a professional athlete who can come out game one and bust some ass.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

oh, and plenty of talent out there at:

    Back up QB; http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2012QB.php

    Centers even: http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2012C.php

How about one of these: http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2012S.php

    Sheesh... looooots of talent available

  • any links to see the presser...even though it's past?

  • Guess Ruskell couldn't take the pressure and abandoned ship...schucky darn....

  • He's not Spalding Gray.

Spalding Gray? +5 for Dennis Miller sized reference there Blogfather.

for $500 and the block, I'll go with:

    "He's not Vaughn Meader."

  • In reply to gpldan:

How about, he's not jerry angelo (and that is the last time I will mention that man by name... ever... again)

  • In reply to gpldan:

I used to find Spalding's musings quite interesting when I was small. After looking at a monologue of his recently, he just appeared to write down every single thing that happened to him in the most miniscule detail. He must have had absolutely no friends as a child and lived entirely inside his own head.

  • Guys on the Score are tearing Emery a new one. Listen here:

  • In reply to gpldan:

GP..on what? I just streamed this minute.

thanks for the link, spaced it out..damn!!!!!!!! I wish I would of thought of this asap.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Boers and Bernstein annoy the hell out of me, today especially the way they interrupted the presser so much. Two negative Nancy's. I found the speech boring, but that has nothing to do with how well he will or won't do.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

yep, they're pretty negative corm. He's going to be on in a couple hrs supposedly though and they WILL ask him the hard questions. Should be a good listen if he does actually show up.

Hey, btw, you're a big music guy... maybe canada can chime in too.

I have a question re: something/someone I just don't get.... at all. I mean AT... ALL.

Maybe it's just cause I'm not a hard core music guy, but every time I hear this dude, I just honestly just don't. get. it.

I try, I listen, I dig deep, I listen more, but I just don't understand what makes him such a legend... although if you tell me it's the gimmicky/novelty/jokeish thing, I kinda get that. Ready?

    Tom Waits

    ...Someone? Anyone? Little help?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Tom Waits is a bad mother...

However, he's probably not for everybody. Taste is a hard thing to account fo. I'll put it to you this way, nobody sounds anything like Tom Waites. NOBODY. How many bands or artists can you say that about? Personally, I love the man. But I'm a fan of lyricists and people with unique voices, schtick, music what have you. He has those in spades. Clearly a victim of one too many whiskey shots.

Next you're going to tell me that you don't like Bob Dylan. C'mon MB. Don't tell me that!

  • DOC!

I thought maybe you're band of chilluns had gotten the best of you. Man, you've been missing out on some epic MW3 battles between shady, MBP, (sometimes johnny) and me.

Yeah, ok... I totally get the badass (in the true sense) voice thing and tooootally the Shtick thing. That makes sense to me. Truth be told I haven't really been able to listen to his writing because, 1) he's kinda hard to understand, and 2) I get distracted by the bigness of the whole show, if you know what I mean. Yes, I imagine he intimately knows what whiskey tastes like.

Yes, I like dylan... just can't listen to too much otherwise the rhythmic whiney thing sets in and that's all I hear. I'm much more of a marley, zep, queen, hendrix guy (with some dead thrown in). I also saw an OAR concert live on TV the other night... those guys are pretty good - like a mix between dave mathews and BNL.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Glad to hear you're a dead fan. Still don't trust you knowing you're not a Neil Young fan though. I mean....THE HUMANITY!

The Chilluns have been working me over pretty good. The new one sleeps pretty good throught the night with only two feedings, but for the last week, he screams whenever he's awake. Not fussy, SCREAMS! Reminds me of Homer on the Simpsons night terror episode...

  • Yeah maing. I guess I just can't take the more whiney voices. Not a fan at all.

Wow, that sucks. Colic? Must be nice that your wife is a milkmaid and knows what the fuck she's doing at least... especially since this is like your 6th kid. But hang in maing, hang in.

btw, I've decided that I will refuse to have another kid. I am just going to say no. You can divorce me if you'd like, but I ain't going through that for a third fucking time. We have a girl and a boy and we're done. We can start traveling again soon, almost out of diapies for my daughter.... I can juuuuust see the light.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB, I'm kind of with you on this one. I like Waits and Dylan for their song writing ability and lyrics, but I like their songs better played by other musicians / bands. I seen Dylan with the Dead, and I would give it a 3/10. Sorry Hunti. His songs are better when others play them.
MB, and others, give these two soul / blues songs a listen. First off, best song of the year.
Next up, a blues / soul cover played the night after Etta James died on January 20 by Warren Haynes and friends. I love hard rocking music, but these are two beautiful songs. Ear candy.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

ahhh...traveling...our little girl is due in march, she and her brother will be almost exactly 2 years apart...I'm really stoked...not stoked about the $1200+ daycare every month! THAT is what makes the traveling a little more tough...that's a pretty good chunk of once upon a time 'disposable' income....but hey it's only another 4-5 years...and our little boy and his future sister are the best things that have ever happened to me so who cares about money you know? We just bought a beautiful new house for them to grow up in, and everything I do is for them...and that's the only way it ever will be...but yeah, in my long winded rambling way...I hear ya..it WILL be nice to be able to pick up and just go take the kiddos on weekend trips etc...

  • In reply to MB30SD:

If you like OAR, listen to Dispatch. Specifically the song "The General" It will make your balls tingle.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Nighthawks at the diner. Top album. Drunk poet at a piano. Classic little stories and asides. He makes think he's what Jim Morrison might have been like later on had he lived ...

Now everybody ... one ... two ....one two three ....

You know there were nighthawks at the diner
    A little joint called Emma's 49er
With a rendezvous of strangers around the coffee urn tonight
And all the gypsy hacks and now the insomniacs
    And the paper's been read
    As the waitress said

Eggs and sausage and a side of toast
Coffee and a roll and a hash browns over easy
And some chile in a bowl with burgers and fries
    Now what kind of pie?

Now you see in this graveyard charade
Well it was kinda of a late shift masquerade
With 2 for a quarter and its dime for a dance
With Woolworth rhinestone diamond earrings and a sideways glance
    And as the register rings
    And the waitress sings

  • I like this one a lot...

Take It With Me - Tom Waits

Phone's off the hook; no one knows where we are
It's a long time since I drank champagne
The ocean is blue, as blue as your eyes
I'm gonna take it with me when I go

Old long since gone now, way back when
    We lived in Coney Island
Ain't no good thing ever dies
I'm gonna take it with me when I go

Far far away, a train whistle blows
Wherever you're goin, wherever you've been
Waving good bye at the end of the day
You're up and you're over and you're far away

Always for you and forever yours
It felt just like the old days
We fell asleep on Beaula's porch
I'm gonna take it with me when I go

All broken down by the side of the road
I was never more alive or alone
I've worn the faces off all the cards
I'm gonna take it with me when I go

The children are playing at the end of the day
Strangers are singing on our lawn
It's got to be more than flesh and bone
All that you've loved is all you own

    In a land there's a town
And in that town there's a house
And in that house there's a woman
And in that woman there's a heart I love
I'm gonna take it with me when I go
I'm gonna take it with me when I go

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I love the little story he tells about pouring himself a drink late at night and taking advantage of himself : "The one thing about calling yourself up is you're always at home."

  • In reply to TheFifth:

They want to be ahead of the curve if he fails and they're counting on everyone else to forget if they're wrong.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Two self-absorbed assholes whose only value derives from interviews with people who actually played football or know about football.

  • this could get interesting:

  • MB.....with this sentence you are probably about to pass out!!!

"I'm a very different person than Jerry".

  • I had class right when this all went down.

I agree evantonio.. what he says is different that what he does.

Though, he seems to do things in the right way.

  • Well, perhaps this is the whole Blogfather "the Chicago press needs a slap down" thing, but so far - the reaction to the Emery PC has been much more negative than I thought it would be...

Let's see what Telander, Haugh and others say about it tomorrow...

  • In reply to gpldan:

For the record, I'm for giving the guy a chance. But the whole "you can't fire Lovie" thing - it's weird. It's not how a functional football team runs.

  • In reply to gpldan:

listening now...basically calling him JA2.0. GM by committee they are charging.

I didn't hear the presser (link?), but bottom line , only the moves made this offseason will start to paint the picture.

  • you guys thirsty? Here's some coolaid: http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/multimediapopup.asp?mm_file_id=2878&play_clip=Y&rn=9

  • In reply to MB30SD:

wtf? the only way to make this vid better is Photoshop some Honeybears grind'n and hump'n their pom.poms!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • listening to teddy ballgame interviewed makes me a little sick to my stomach.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB...I actually threw up in my mouth a little. weasel.....

  • In reply to lobotobear:

    yes lobo... yeeees.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Actually, I was thinking that someone needs to assist him straightening his tie.

  • I will give Emery the benefit of the doubt..until he proves that he has the keys to the clown car...and is willing to fire her up.

  • He didn't say "dirty pool" once. For that, I salute him.

In other news - Any of you guys had a sip of these newfangled "anti energy" drinks?

Holy shit - not for work, gentlemen... Not for work.

    I'm sleepy.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

yes, 5hr energy works... whether it's the placeebo effect or not.

for the gym/run/ride/swim/bball/whatever... check our Jack3d (www.jack3d.com). Sounds meathead, but the shit WOOOORKS.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

No no no... ANTI energy drinks..

Check it out, but buyer beware.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    anti energy?

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Yes... "relaxation" drinks...

As in, head on the keyboard, groggy as fuck within half an hour.

Take before bed... not before lunch.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    oh. no thanks.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Bob tested, Rasta approved.

I bet it would be fantastic before bed...

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

I just use some courvoisier.... in a gobblet the size of a kiddie pool.... yo.

  • emery going to be joining B&B this afternoon on the raaadio. THAT should be interesting... very interesting.

  • Do you guys like my Brett Kiesel hat?

  • In reply to gpldan:

Nice. I like this one more: http://beardhead.com/lumberjack.html

I want badly to grow a BK beard, but I would probably look more like fucking osama bin laden than BK.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Ooooh. That page had link to Carstache

  • In reply to gpldan:

oh my god... the mayans are indeed right. We, as a society, are sooooo fucked next year.

Burn it all down to the ground Hunab Ku, burn it down to the ground.

  • I don't give a flying fuck if "squidgy the space dog" is in charge I just want us to get one of these:

  • In reply to lobotobear:

  • In reply to lobotobear:

man, you're telling me lobo. He is a man amoungst boys.

Anyone know if there is ANY chance we can pry anquan from balt (putting the assfucking JA gave them last year aside)?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    no u

  • Emery on now!!!!

  • In reply to lobotobear:

  • MB I may not be the best resource for Tom Waits. I have a friend that LOVES him and when you're at his place you're going to hear a lot of his music. I don't dislike him but his voice is an acquired taste. I'm way more into voices than lyrics. So it probably won't surprise you that I've never bought any Tom Waits, Bob Dylan or Neil Young records. Of those 3, Neil Young is my favorite. I totally appreciate their writing talents but that doesn't mean I want to listen to them sing. I've had people that were into pop or country look at my record collection (LP's, Cassettes, Reel-to-Reels and CD's) and say, "I've never heard of any of these people" or my favorite, "Do you have any music by white people?".

The vast majority of my music collection is Blues, Soul, R&B, Zydeco, New Orleans, Funk, Roots, Jazz, World Music and '60's/70's Rock. The Soul and R&B is from the '40's/'70's. The Rock and Roll is '50's/'60's. I'm also a huge fan of Richard Thompson. I like other types of music but in limited doses.

This is probably way more info than you wanted.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I'm with you on the voice over lyrics Canada. Singers like Johny cash offered/offer both.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

See above. I'm guessing you would like the vocals and music.

  • MB -

Check this legendary move out. Guy goes vertical with a guy on his 6 in BF3, ejects, hits the guy with the RPG, then lands BACK in his plane and keeps going.

It's so legendary, a made a tribute to it using another software kit to make it look real

I figure Tom Cruise will be doing it in his next MI movie.

  • In reply to gpldan:

damn, that's insane. You on BF3 online GP?

Shady, MBP... I'm going to have to defect I think.

Check out these nerds (pretty cool though): http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_175937&list=UUnSJnytTrg8InDTRd58C3kA&v=wwnMfvfPQQE&src_vid=2Bu2WjrNXt0

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Egyptian nerds. Wow.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Isreali nerds, and that was fucking awesome.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MW3, BF3, whatever platform you want to get worked just let me know. Get some.

  • In reply to Shady:

look at you. bastard. Maybe my aim will be better in BF3 (ok, maybe not)?

I'm game in the next couple nights. Hook up on MW3, then move over when ready... I haven't signed up on BF3 or anything, so no clue how long it would take to get set up, but flying jets is SWEEET!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Yeah you can fly like 4 different types of jets, 5 different helicopters, tanks, boats, hummers etc. It's the tits.

  • In reply to Shady:

Now that I'm approaching a 1:1 MW3 KD ratio online?

  • So Rusky is gone. Does anyone care or know what he actually did? Nice that he was shown the exit, what a waste of $$. BTW, was there ever a more comical Pro Bowl ever? The lineman were doing paper-rocks-scissors. Good to see Forte running though.

  • In reply to GuinnessPlease:

What, the stench of Jerra no longer lingers around Halas Hall?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

    thank your god trac.

  • presser:

  • In reply to lobotobear:

    thanks lobo...

my goodness does nick roach look totally and completely baked in that applevacations commercial or what. Holy cow nick, don't smoke like 10 bowls before you go on camera dude.

  • Yeah, I was trying to listen to Boer and Bernstein (cuz surprise surprise, the stream at the official site wasn't working), but I just couldn't

They kept interrupting like two giggling school girls, playing stupid sound bites in between.

I felt like telling them to SHUT THE FUCK UP.

I really don't give a rats ass if Emery is silver tongued. In fact, it's almost refreshing that he's not because to me that implies that he got that job on merit, on substance not style. Like an ugly chick on tv.

Some guy named Billichick isn't exactly JFK either, but he gets the god damn job done.

Here's a toast to Emery, the navy cowboy Billichick (cross fingers).

  • Found some old Navy Academy footage of Emery as strength and conditioning coach.

"Drop your purse, honey, and pick up the medicine ball..."

  • haha

  • And while on Loyd Bridges...

  • Is it me or has it been quiet on here?

Off-season has to be killing you guys, it is to me, March 12. My bday and when we will see who we get in FA. Who should I wish for? Mario Williams, V.Jax, D.Bowe, or do we have some names I should be wishing for.

This year seems like it is going to be better than last year. Obviously Free agency and who we draft will determine most of that but it seems like we do not have knuckle heads drafting or coaching our players any more.
I give Lovie more credit than most and believe in his system because I played in a 4-3 system in high school. If Lovie cannot produce then I know Emery is not afraid to fire him like most believe. Plus, Emery will get a Football Player, not a fast forty time, not a jumping out of a pull, but a Football Player.

I know this is a long post but guys, there is some light shining in this team. Time will tell but I got to say.. it looks good.

  • damn..not a jumping out of a pool. My bad.

  • Ah, you Tweeter, long post ... sheesh. Artoo leaves his his 140 character comfort zone. Mwah!

Lovie's not the problem for me - in fact, dare I say it, we looked to have dumped most of our problems and there is more reason to be excited than we've had in a long time. Training camp should be off the chain. I'm double-pumped.

  • In my humble opinion, Martz was the biggest problem in the Bears film room. At least Jerry realized his drafting was bunk and he went out and signed Peppers. Martz on the other hand kept trying to insert the 7 step drop no matter what the film showed him. I think Martz probably had more to do with Jerry being fired than anything.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

Good riddance to both. Arrogant SOBs are jobless.

Watched that Emery presser - touch of the Mr. Mackey's about him ... mmmkay.

    Good luck Phil.

BTW - anyone having problems with the site at the moment in Firefox? It's coming up text-style with Jeff's post about CN restyling (turning arseways more like) as the header. Chrome is fine.

It had this gem about our rd 2 pick (which was not as you'll recall, M**** L*******) :

Positives: Stephen Paea is an absolute beast in the middle, capable of disrupting any interior offensive lineman and while he has not wrecked quarterbacks, he'll keep blockers off our middle linebackers. Strength? You want strength? Click here and see strength. What the Bears just drafted is Olin Kreutz on the other side of the ball. (Add to this the rumor that the Bears were going to take him in round one if Carimi were off the board and it's clear Jerry is having a solid two nights.)

  • Jeff I'm surprised by your hate for the score. B&B can be damn annoying at times, but they usually have better analysis of things than anything you will ever hear on espn1000 IMO. Also, Matt Bowen and Hub A. are both tremendous at covering the NFL. Did you just not like the Emery interview yesterday? I didn't think there was anything too bad about it. He gave mostly non-answers to the majority of the questions anyways, which I guess is to be expected at this point. I'm sure that didn't satisfy B&B, but nothing ever does...that's their schtick.

  • In reply to BearDown1982:

I fucking hate Bowen. His anal-isis is pretty good, but his personality is fucking horrible. He was a shit player, but he acts like he was the best safety ever. Every time he opens his mouth I want to fill it up with my poop.

  • Morrissey is not on board. No shocker there.

Hub's show on the Score tonight, starts at 7pm Chicago time I think. From what I understand, Hub is down with Emery and thinks he will bring discipline to draft day.

Score is here if you are not in Chicago:

  • In reply to gpldan:

Ditto on the Darth Morrissey assessment GP.
He must moonlight as a certain "political persuasion" pundit. Do these guys actually get paid to write their tripe? Where do I go to fill out an application to write for that rag?

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

I doubt their getting paid at this point. The Sun-Times has gone bankrupt twice, and I think if you write for them you literally get peanuts. In the shell.

Their latest gem of an idea is to give the paper away to people in certain burbs in the hopes they will get to like it and subscribe when it stops coming to the door. I get a copy on my driveway that I didn't ask for every day, so I read it on the train. Eventually it will just stop and I will go back to reading the exact same paper online, with no delay in publication.

It's a paper run by idiots.

Having said that, I think Morrissey is an okay writer. Way better than Neil Steinberg, who is Bob Greene lite.

    fucking nigerians

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Good luck to 'em I say. Anyone dumb enough to send them their bank details deserves everything they get. Clueless greed gets punished, I love it.

I listened to a BBC radio report recently on the scammers. They sit in internet cafes, bunches of them together, just sending and monitoring emails. Fishing for idiots. Hip hop artists have started appealing to them via the medium of music to stop spamming/phishing and use their skills in a more positive way and lessen the stigma over the nation.

  • Oh gee whiz ---- LOOK AT THIS.

The Packer fans are unhappy, and CRYING that Giants Fan has come to his forum to rain down on the parade.

Ohez Noez, you mean New Yorkers, go away! What have we ever done to you?

    Irony is a mofo.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    I love me some Brick-Top

  • In reply to gpldan:

me too. I always think of that scene when I use cunt in a sentence.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Fill me in MB. I'm not aware of the 'buddy' version of c@#t.

  • Cor, you surprise me. Dylan is the man. I and many many others would much prefer him sing his songs. Although, his voice does suck nowadays. To me, nothing beats old Dylan, cept maybe old Floyd.

I used to DJ at my college's radio station. I liked doing themed shows. For one show, I played only dylan songs. I played them in pairs. His version of a song followed by some obscure cover of the song. It was really fun. His songs are great when sung by anybody, to be sure. The music lover that you are, it surprises me to hear you say that. Though I can't actually hear you, only read what you're typing.

  • Doc, I like some of Dylan's originals from back in the 60's, but live I like other people's versions. I get grief from some of my friends for my view on this topic. A couple musician friends seen him recently and said he was incredible.
In commemoration of National Kazoo Day yesterday, here's my favorite song with the Kazoo, Corporal Clegg from Saucerful of Secrets.
Listened to this album in the boonies of Upper Michigan one year while watching a large spider build its web on a log over the lake, then went night crawler hunting. The "trip" started with skinning a large Pine Snake, about 4-5 feet long, whose head had been run over, but the body was still moving. Someone wanted to make a belt. I skinned the snake, and afterwards held it while it slithered around with no skin. Great science experiment. Then we went fishing, caught some northern pike for dinner, and listened to Saucerful of Secrets while exploring. It was a successful "trip".

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Awesome. Watching a snake writhe around with no skin. On acid. Listening to Floyd. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun indeed.

On the artistic argument, if you can't sing for shit - and Bob Dylan can't sing for shit - then you'd better be a poet .. a la Johnny Cash, Lou Reed etc. Where we've gone wrong is that it doesn't matter if you can neither sing nor write songs now, you just need the right haircut.

  • It was awesome Irish. You could see through the flesh and watch the "ribs" slide along the spine. I still have the tail of that snake. That was the deal for skinning it, I get the tail.

  • The man can write a tune, no doubt. Adele's version of that Dylan song 'make you feel my love' pisses all over his version though. Clapton's Knockin on Heaven's door pisses all over his version. Edie Brickell's A hard Rain pisses all over his version, in fact anyone who seems to cover a Dylan song does a better job on the delivery. Fair comment?

  • Sorry, disagree completely. I'd say there are many that are outstanding, but to a Dylan fan, nothing beats the original.

Listen to his version of House of the Rising Sun and tell me he can't sing

  • Cor, loved both tracks. If you're going to do slow burners, you'd better be able to sing.

That's the problem with so many Blues bands. They can play the hell out their instruments but nobody can sing. I go to Saturday afternoon jams quite a bit. There are 2 Blues bars close to my place. One is literally around the corner and the other is about 1km away. The bands that start the jams are great. After that, you never know what you're going to get.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I'm a little more fortunate right now with the number of people who can play and sing. Lots of above average singers, and a few that are really good.

  • Doc my sister that turned me onto Blues when I was 13 is a huge Dylan fan. I've heard all of his old stuff a lot. I dig the songs but that voice is an acquired taste. If you don't warm up to it, his music is a tough sell. One of his latests CD's is Blues and his voice is more like a croak.

  • MB according to a men's mag survey Sofia Vergara just edged out Kate Upton for hottest babe (saw this on SI's site today). Thought you should know. I'm pretty sure the guys voting in that survery were into boobs.

possibly she'd slap you and show you how to do it the right way!!!!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I am assuming you are talking about bubbi rather than Ledger...

  • MB not to put too fine of a point on it but SV is Columbian. You know me, I'm pretty OK with KU but SV is no slouch. SV gets way more exposure (pun intended, of course) being on a national TV show. Let's put it this way, if you had first choice and took KU I'm quite sure I'd be OK with SV. Although if I had my first choice it would be Keely Hazell. SIGH!

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

was it you with the south American wife?

Yeah, she's just kinda wide and not that attractive for me - not my style. Guess I like more of the whitebread American looking chicks. Although, I think the chick that hosts that one chef show is super-hot.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

She's got that "Natalie Portman's Older Sister" thing that makes you want to bang the hell out of her, doesn't she?

  • from the "No Shit" file:

this all falls on the shoulders of our previous GM.."The name we donot speak of".....lesser talent?....yes. piss poor system?..... yes....trying to fit a round peg in a square hole....FUCK ME!!!!!!!

  • In reply to lobotobear:

p.s. smart move Marsahll...don't piss on the one sucking on your ballsssss.....nice touch.

  • MB my wife is from Montreal. I'm not sure which chef show you're talking about. Don't get me wrong SV isn't my first choice but she ain't bad. I'm guessing the demographic for that survey was older guys that watch a lot of TV. Probably some of them would feel like a perv because KU is so young. I don't have that problem. KU and Keely Hazell make this old guy a happy perv.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

  • Not that it truly matters, but Ruskell kind of got a giant screwover by the Bears. It's like an episode of the Office, but the mean-spirited Gervais as Brent Office.

Rusk: "So, I can interview for the GM job, yeah? I'd be great at that, ya know, I've really been training my whole life for the job."

Teddy Ballgame as Brent: "Yeah, alright, no probs, see you in a week then, we'll get you right in the rotation. I think you have as much chance as anyone (snicker)."

Rusk: "Great! I'll put on my bestest suit and tie!"

    (after interview)

Ted: "Sorry mate, looks like it's just not going to pan out."

Rusk: "Ok, well I'll get on board with whomever you choose, I'm a team guy. Go team!"

Ted: "Yeah.... well.... about that. I'm not sure - ya know - the new guy he'll want to make his own changes and not really sure that's going to work out."

Rusk: "But I stayed, I showed my loyalty to the Bears after Glitchy was canned, I waited for my shot and now all the jobs in the league are closed up."

Ted: "Yeah... sorry about that. Nothing I could do, really. Way the ball bounces and all that..."

  • In reply to gpldan:

    fuck ruskell.

He's got a great future playing karl rove on tv... or, you know, some shit.

  • In reply to gpldan:

It's just good business GP...Good Business son................yeah for the McCaskey's LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So , here's the first open Super Bowl ad:

    What do you think?

the first thing that comes to mind, besides Holy Shit did he sell out on that or what? And... his puff pastry belly has been what Sarah Jessica has been bouncing on all these years... I think not. is....

Dude - how you can fuck Chicago like that?

If you are going to do this thing, then you MUST acknowledge the City that made the damn movie. I mean - come on.

At least have him bump into some old man who introduces himself as Abe Froman, Sausage King of Chicago. I mean... something.

  • To a non-dylan fan I could see how one might find certain covers of his songs to be better than his. But to a Dylan fan, nothing beats the original. I dig his covers too. I have a really nice reggae tirbute to Bob and it kicks some serious ass. But to me, and to any Dylan fan, I can't think of one single cover that beats the original.

His version of House of the Rising Sun

I guess it's like this, there are probably many that can sing better, in a textbook way, than Bob Dylan. But singing is about delivery and soul, voice is secondary. I mean Maria Carey has a better voice than Syd Barrett, but who would you rather hear sing Arnold Lane?

  • Metal band playing Dylan.
    Metal band kicking some ass.
    Constant: Warren Haynes.

Warren Haynes has ruined me regarding most other live music.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

How about Etta James singing GnR with about 100x of Axl's soul:

  • Does anyone know who the female singer is in this song?
Fucking kick ass song about Chicago. She rocks!
