Divisional Round Game Previews & Fantasy Playoffs Continued

Divisional Round Game Previews & Fantasy Playoffs Continued

Nailed Saturday last weekend but Sunday had some genuine surprises. I did not expect the Falcons to let the Giants simply push them around in the Meadowlands. I did not expect Mike Smith to deliver such an inept performance from the Falcons sideline. I did not expect every member of Steelers roster to leave the game injured and for those remaining healthy (Ike Taylor, James Harrison, Troy Polamalu) to bee overwhelmed by Tim Tebow's arm. Bizarre ballgame.

New Orleans Saints over SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

I'm torn on this game. I root for old school football and nobody played older school football in the NFL this year than Jim Harbaugh's Niners. They are as talented a defensive front as there is in the game, suffocating against the run, and would tell you their ideal offensive game plan would be forty Frank Gore carries. Their problem is while Alex Smith has minimized his mistakes and managed games well, he has been an inaccurate mess in the red zone and left his team to settle for a million field goals. I know the Saints have been a different team on the road and on grass but I think this will be one Gregg Williams blitz too many for the Niners. Saints 23, Niners 20.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS over Denver Broncos

I'm not torn on this game. What Tim Tebow did to the Pittsburgh Steelers he will not do to the New England Patriots. I'm prone to believe the real Tebow was the one who failed to complete a pass over the month of December and not the bomb dropper we saw Sunday afternoon. You can't find consistent success only throwing 30+ yard passes in the NFL. You have to throw a come backs. You have to throw accurately to the sideline. Belichick does not have the defenders Romeo has in Kansas City or Lovie has in Chicago but he'll compensate for his lack of talent by preaching gap discipline from his front seven and toughness from his deep backs. His offense will score. New England 30, Broncos 16

BALTIMORE RAVENS over Houston Texans

Why? Because I believe the Ravens can sell out to stop the run and then bully T. J. Yates into sadness. Ravens 20, Texans 10

GREEN BAY PACKERS over New York Giants

I can't get the image of the Bears dominating the front seven of the Packers on Christmas night with Kahlil Bell running the ball. The Giants don't have the run game the Bears have but they've looked more capable on the ground as Brandon Jacobs has reemerged in the last few weeks. I see one of those games where the Packers jump out quick and the Giants keep chase but never quite finish it. Packers 30, Giants 24

Fantasy Playoffs Continued....

  • The individuals listed below (and myself) are still eligible to win six Lou Malnati's pizzas. You have until kickoff of the first game Saturday to put in your selections.
  • Select one offensive unit, one defensive unit and one special teams unit active this week.
  • You can not select any of the units you chose for the wild card round. If you do so, even by accident, you will be disqualified from the competition.
  • There are 23 eligible contestants left. Only the top ten (plus ties) will make it to the Championship Games.
  • My selections this week. Offense: New York Giants. Defense: Baltimore Ravens. Special Teams: San Francisco 49ers.

  • Okay here it is: my top 40 draft board. Stars mean I would trade the pick rather than take the player. I included every player in the current Walterfootball round 1 mock draft. If we get any of my top 11 in round 1 without trading up, I will be absolutely ecstatic. If we get two of the guys on this board in rounds 1 and 2 with out 3rd rounders intact, I will be very happy.

Only thing, I don't believe there is any position that we should get two of. So no OL/OL, WR/WR, or DL/DL splits. Also, I would not be happy to see a combination of two of LB, DB, TE, RB, QB - not enough needs met in that case.

    1. Matt Kalil (OT, USC)
    2. Justin Blackmon (WR, Oklahoma State)

Justin Blackmon. Sigh. VERY studly, but we can only dream.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Burfict should be a Raven, Lewis can control him. Otherwise, they guy may blow up.

  • In reply to gpldan:

He was not much of a factor when when the 2-9 Arizona "We lost 10 staright games to Division 1 opponents before we managed to beat UCLA" Wildcats went into Sun Devil Stadium and wrecked ASU's season to get their 3rd win. There was a bit of that "Out of control Burfect" on display that night as well.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Maranelli and Urlacher could get the best out of him and cool his jets for a while. The thing about drafting Blackmon (not that we'l have to worry about that) is that we'd still a 6'5 receiver. That's not even negotiable.

Anything other than a LT, MLB or Konz if he falls to us in the first would be a draft fail.

  • Did anyone post this already?

I am excited to see Mike Tice as the new offensive coordinator. Do you know if he plans on allowing Jay Cutler to call audibles at the line of scrimmage? I think Jay has seen enough defensive looks to be able to successfully audible.

    Matt C.
    Amsterdam

Yes, I do believe that with Mike Tice becoming the Bears offensive coordinator, the quarterback will have the ability to audible out of some potentially bad plays based on what he sees from the defense.

  • In reply to Artoo:

    Yes... I believe you did.

  • In reply to Artoo:

Nice article. I think Ross and Raye are both solid guys that could do good things for our team in the draft (which is the number 1 priority right now). But there are other questions that will come out, some of which can only be answered behind closed doors.

    1) How are they with free agency?
    2) How are they negotiating contracts to retain good players (answer that Mr. Raye).
    3) How are they in dealing with coaches and creating a winning culture that stays focussed all season long (see Chargers beginning the season, Giants finishing the season).
    4) How are they with the press in a big market? (How'd Ross do on camera in NY?)
    5) How do they gel with the talent we have: Lovie, Tice, Cutler, Peppers, Lach, Forte? All key people.

If I'm interviewing, I'm looking at their thoughts on this draft. I'm looking at their thoughts on Forte, Briggs and Bennett's contracts (Earl retrospectively). I'm looking at their plan to grow the offense and maintain the defense. I'm looking at their opinion of Lovie's coaching to date.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

You do not realize how good Raye is till you read that Article though..

All those questions will be tough to find out but it is the Bears job.

Cutler is trying hard to have a Denver reunion in Chicago lol

  • In reply to Artoo:

I would fully support bringing in Marshall. I think Marshall plus a 4th or 5th in exchange for our two 3s would be a good deal.

I wanted Bates before anyone in the media brought his name up. But apparently he will not be given an interview.

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

No wideouts, bad o-line, and decent defense depth is all.

  • In reply to Artoo:

With absolutely very little pressure for Fischer next year. He'll turn em around, no doubt in my mind.

  • O: Giants
    D: Patriots
    S: Broncos

I am hoping that the Patriots allow a lot of FGs but no touchdowns.

  • I'm calling that the Pats and Broncos go to OT. God lets the Broncos win the coin flip. Then, Tebow returns the kickoff for a TD for the W. Then, he announces in the post-game interview that he is gay, shocking the Christian community and immediately taking Santorum out of the nomination race.

  • In reply to Crown:

I thought you were going to say "taking Santorum out on a date." Usually the more they complain about gays the more likely they are to be ass deep in friends.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

No doubt Santorum is a bottom. His incessant talk about gays plus his constant wear of sweater vests gives it away man.

  • In reply to Crown:

This week, when the prosecutor gave that stupid talk in Happy Valley, they were reviewing the marketing lit for the Second Mile.

It said something like, "The Second Mile gives struggling youngsters opportunity, and access to the most storied college football program in America. It really turns young boys around."

Talk about bad phrasing. I think turning young boys around was the problem...

  • In reply to gpldan:

    struggling
    is also a bad use
    of terminology
    when used regarding prey

  • In reply to Crown:

They're all bottoms with the exception of Ron Paul. He's the only American politician who ever mentions the Fed. He has never actually pulled back the curtain to show the citizens that the great Wizard of Oz is just a litle old man with a printing machine ... but at least he waves his arms and poitns at the curtain a lot.

  • Totally agree. He makes the rest of them squirm, including the media.

  • I'm sure it won't surprise you, Irish, that I've voted for Ron Paul in (pretty sure) four primaries in a row now.

The other thing he keeps pointing at is the absurd deployment of American soldiers around the world. Unfortunately, the hubris of empire has tremendous inertia of its own.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

It's ironic how other Republicrats and the media say his foreign policy is crazy, but his top donors are active Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel.

  • In reply to Crown:

Broncos +13.5 has to be the bet of the week.

  • All right.

I think you all know this but I have to say it.I know who all the new comers are and I should have done this in the beginning when this game started.

All the new comers are the regs on here, just using different emails and names to win or have a better chance of winning. I could be crazy or just a sore loser but I bet that is where the new people are coming from. Just sayin

  • In reply to Artoo:

You may be right Superman but it mostly sounds like sour grapes.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    Yeah, I know. Damn it.

Do you have ANY idea how long it took me to come up with 30 different names and entries!!!

    Now, where's my Kryptonite?

  • I'd like to add a couple names to the list of guitarists that made my hair stand up at a show (from an earlier thread).

Mark Knopflerr- dude knows how to bring emotion to a song. So eloquent is his playing. Then again, it may have been the e I took.

Neil Fucking Young: Dude shreds like he's still 16. If you haven't seen Neil with Crazy horse, kill yourself now.

  • Mark can play the guitar.. I mean.. wow.

  • Crazy Horse has been inactive since 2004. So you're requesting that all children 7 years old and younger commit suicide?

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

Although when Neil plays 'Sedan Delivery', he often prefaces it by saying, "Smell the horse on this one."

So, it's an homage to a group that doesn't quite exist anymore, but played by the same guy the same way.

It's kind of like Roger Waters on tour, in that way.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

I wish they still made Crazy Horse. That was a great $1 40oz

  • I used to drink $1 Private Stock or Mickey's 40oz.if they were on sale.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

That depends - are you a precocious 6 year old?

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

That's ridiculous. I've seen 'em play with Neil as recently as 2008.

And no, just you Green Bay fags.

  • After checking Wikipedia, I see you are right. I swear that was Crazy Horse I saw with him in '08. I wasn't high that night either. Huh. Weird.

  • Guess that means I have to kill myself. Shit.

  • I've never seen Neil, so I'll do the slow kill with alcohol.
Cortez the Killer is one of my favorite songs. There was a surprise guest musician this year at a Mississippi River island party on my birthday. My buddy's 10 year old kid helped rock out this song after just 5 lessons. It's not great, but cool none the less. His first "performance".

Love going to concerts with this kid. He studies EVERYTHING! For his 11th b-day this year his surprise present from his parents was a Warren Haynes show. None of us told him what was up until we got there. He was happy as hell.

  • O: Patriots

  • I reverse-engineered the scores to find the source of the errors. The errors were caused by 2 bad stats from the Pittsburgh/Denver game:

    1. Denver allowed 12 points on defense, but only 6 were deducted.
    2. Denver & Pgh each scored 11 points on ST, but Denver was credited +1 to Pgh's -1.

Twenty-three people chose Denver D, Denver ST, and/or Pgh ST. All have the wrong score.

Also, two individual scores were miscalculated or mistyped:

    1. Jokey was apparently given a +6 for ATL ST instead of a -6.
    2. Jimmychange was accidentally given an extra point.

And there were 48 contestants (49 including DaCoach's Mustache), so the cut-off point is 24 or 25.

It's so easy to make a mistake in the scoring. Jeff, instead of taking it all upon yourself, I suggest you let the contestants work it out in the comment section.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Or just do a picks contest with a score prediction tie-breaker.

  • Here are the revised standings and the numbers I used to calculate them. Jeff's scores appear in brackets where they differ from mine. I made mistakes, no doubt. Double Check. If I used bad stats, blame ESPN.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Do you think it was easy getting the third worst score on the board? Don't kid yourself, a lot of analysis went into it....

  • In reply to tobijohn:

We need a parallel loser contest. Worst score wins. All we lack is a prize.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

I was thinking the same thing - a booby prize for the worst scores. Maybe an old hubcap or some sort of really tacky Wisconsin/Packers memorabilia?

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I'll try to dig up a Wisconsin Dells Tommy Bartlett Water Show bumper sticker. My father is retired and living in the Lake Geneva area. I'm sure he's got an old WI license plate laying around up there somewhere we could use..

  • In reply to tobijohn:

No Packer gear, but I'd be willing to part with one slightly rusted Iron City beer can with a team picture on it and the words "Super Super Super Steelers 1979" printed across the top. There's hardly any dents.

  • In reply to Crunch Buttsteak:

Illegal formation Jeff, a 5 yard penalty will be assessed and the down should be played over.

I guess you can always site the rule book. I.E., The whistle was inadvertently blown after the fumble even though the ball was recovered by the defense. So according to rule 10025 Section 2a, paragraph 1, the offense will retain possession.

In other words, as unfair and ridiculous as that may be, you're screwed boys.

  • These aren't the droids you're looking for.

    Irish has 52 points.

He can go about his business.

Dez Clark's quote at the start. Wow. They kept it under wraps very well.

  • Just to remind everyone how sinister Penn St. really is, here's an expert from an article I just read as is portrays my feelings on the matter. What a truly disgraceful institution.

"This is why Penn State University needs to be completely gutted. Not just the school president and the athletic department. Garban, Surma, every board member and any other person at Penn State with any sort of power needs to go. While publicly they are trying to paint a picture of change and remorse, internally all they are doing is trying save their own asses while protecting people like Paterno."

Here's the article for anyone that's interested.
