Weekend Show! 'Sweetness' Author Jeff Pearlman on How the Controversy Caused Him to "Lose Chicago"

Weekend Show! 'Sweetness' Author Jeff Pearlman on How the Controversy Caused Him to "Lose Chicago"

Today on the Weekend Show I speak with author of the Walter Payton biography Sweetness, Jeff Pearlman. I encourage you to listen first to Jason Whitlock's Real Talk interview with Pearlman by CLICKING HERE. I am covering some of the same ground as Whitty but that interview takes far longer to delve into Pearlman the man. If you have an opinion on this book, one way or the other, I encourage you to listen to this piece and allow the man to defend his work.

I do apologize for poor sound quality on both the show and Reverend themes. I shall rectify both issues by next week.

i will let Thich Nhat Hanh
    respond to
    the idea of any

    We are here to awaken
    from the illusion
    of our

    Caleb keep your eyes aware
and your hands on that ziffle
score more points than the chiefs
    by the games final whistle

  • In reply to huntinbare:

The illusion of separate-ness, yessir. i'm all over that HB.

My favourite news-story ever (that never was).

“Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the Weather .....”
    ― Bill Hicks

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Love it... "Try taking some mushrooms and squeegee that third eye!"

Try preaching that to a wife who never even tried the doobs.

God bless her for that innocence, though.

Doesn't help her musical stylings, I must admit.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Bill Hicks was one of the 10 best comedians ever. Died way too young.

  • Stand up comedians?

I can only think of a few on par... None current.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Andy Kaufman, though he was more a performance comedian.
William Shatner, though he was dead serious.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

What happened to my link? Shatner:

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    Kat Williams, Chris Rock...

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

Chris Rock started my love for stand up. Bring the Pain is memorized from the first minute to the last. However, I just feel like he fell off. His last one was pretty good though.

Katt I dig, but it's a 50% success rate in his stand-ups... Sometimes his whole style pisses me off. Plus, I don't see him as a game-changer.

I'll give you Chris Rock, but if we're using Katt Williams, then Louis CK and Stanhope get the nod. Hell, Damon Wayans had a few goodies in there, too.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

I love stanhope. I love that Louis CK *admits* that he hates people, so he gets a pass. Mencia and Chapelle and Kat Williams can be funny in spots, but they're racists at the end of the day. Chris Rock walks the line of that category too, but he's funny as hell, probably the best out there for me. Never found Lenny Bruce funny just a coke psychotic same as Pryor. Wayans doing Tyson is hilarious, but for stand-ups who had a point to what they were doing ... BIll Hicks was the man.

  • In reply to huntinbare:

If seperateness is an illusion, then we are no different from Packer fans and it doesn't really matter who wins or loses because everybody is the same. That doesn't sound like much fun to me.

On the other hand, we are champions every year. Hurray!

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

the illusion exists in this dimension only
    because of the consciosness
which is latent in every cell
    separateness starts at conception
back when the sperm and egg got together
    the key to understanding
find out where you were before you were concieved
    anything after that becomes separateness
    you know dualism
    hot cold
    light dark
    good bad
    bears packers

    which means
packers suck and bears are great
cause we were concieved by intelligent design
    (bear parents)

  • In reply to huntinbare:

Your theories are intriguing to me and I would like to subscribe to my newsletter.

  • In reply to huntinbare:

Being conceived a Packer isn't bad, huntibare, just different.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

    we all know that
if the packers were not there
    this would get boring
    they were concieved for
    our entertainment

    I won't be found
    on this blog
    giving the vampire
    and his blood thirsty following
    any respect
    it just woudn't
    be fitting

    deep down
    we are all one
but they came here as the enemy
    and should remain as such

  • thanks for the pearl's perspective
    from this bodies perspective
    sports junkies + sex + scandal +
    drugs + $ = this time
do not assume that is why
    all bodies watch sport
    from one perspective
it is about the play of forces
    on the field
    at a paricular moment
    and how that play interacts
with the data inside of the
    particular viewing mind
    which gives the nervous
    system a rush
    of unsuspected energy
    intuitive response
    just like the bodies
    dancing on the field

  • In reply to huntinbare:

I could care less to hear Pearlman's voice ever again. How they used him in Walter's "A Football Life" beggar's belief. All of the input you could get from people on Sweetness and they chose him? Whose genius idea was that? And Ashton Kuchter? If you want to pick a trendy actor would John Cusack, Jeremy Piven or even Bill Murray not pop their left nut to say something nice about Sweetness?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

as a mailman you get a daily perspective
on the state of american culture
from the magazines that you deliver
this book has nothing different to offer
than what I have seen people type print publish

write the book without those 8 or 9 pages
    of people type trash

if you want to discuss the life of a modern athlete
living on the road away from home
and the difficulties encountered in that type of a lifestyle
then include those 8 or 9 pages in that
along with the rest of the athletes

it says alot about who you are
when you let a magazine use your words
    without juristiction over the content
alot of whores lay down every night
    and earn their keep
i don't need to read this book
I see these cheap tricks every day at work

    earlier today

    the title to the article
"lovie in one on one interview
discussing the teams future plans for
    offensive coordinator mike martz"

Martz walked into a dark room
lovie was seated at the head
    of a long oak table
    with one othe chair waaaaayyyy
    at the other end

    lovie said nothing
    just pressed a control button
    darkened the room to black
    spun his chair around
    facing a theatre screen
    which began to play
    the throwback
at the end of the first half
    by caleb hanie
    right after the horse collar
    this came on

    when the lights came up
martz was in the room alone

  • In reply to huntinbare:

I love that nyquil commercial with lovie in it too hunti.

Actually that was pretty good, I liked your screenplay.

So is shilo a pet or a person??

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    he is 24 years old

lot of respect to you for being a great dad hunti. And shilo probably has a better life than most of us. Fairy tales and comic books for reality sounds much better than what's really out there. Kudos to you sir.

  • In reply to huntinbare:

    true hunti... except doc.

Doc deserves a lot more kudos than the rest of us simply because of the sheer volume of children. So extra kudos to you doc!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

His commitment to restocking the Bears roster for the next couple of decades is nothing less than admirable.

Keep up the good "work", Doc!

And I'm quite sure you'll catch up to me in no time, MB. But thanks for the props. I can't promise to try. But I do try to try.

  • I might read Pearlman's book some day. I thought it was very uncouth for him to say he agreed with the SI excerpt in the interview on the show today.
Walter was an inspiration to millions, and the SI piece focuses on his weaknesses. Sensationalism in the media rules the day.

  • Chargers

  • TracDaddy's in the house boys!

  • In reply to TracDaddy:

    TracDaddy ! HA!

  • If Jay does come back and I hope he does, he should be studying the packers D the whole time. They always give him fits and if we think he will be back it will be for that game.

  • I'll admit it, I'm not particularly excited to read the Sweetness biography, but if I get it for a Christmas present, of course I will. I just don't get too worked up over sports bios, regardless of the subject.
You can admire the guy without thinking he was infallible, e.g. JFK, Lincoln, Churchill, Pat TIllman.

  • shady, sorry I missed you last night maing... I got ambushed litterally on my way to the office by the wife. "babe, can you please help me with xmachannukakawanzafestivus wrapping"

11' I finished cleaning up. Jesus christ... I'll never have that 3 hrs back.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Haha well that's the married life for you I guess, continued luck with all of THAT. You left me like hanging like a piece of raw meat for these ravenous teenage dogs online. I begged for my life but my appeals fell on deaf ears. My KD ratio was embarrassing. Whatever shred of dignity I had left was taken when the player I though I was stalking turned out to be stalking me and took my dog tags. Clever girl.

  • In reply to Shady:

yeah mang... sorry to leave you twisting. I tried to reason with her, but we all know how that goes, "but babe, I'm supposed to blow up one of my blog buddies in my video game" (just get the icy cold blank stare)... "ok, at least let me log on and let him know tha...." (icy cold stare morphs into angry frown) .... "uhhh, ok, never mind… I'll hit him up tomorrow, he'll understand."

So all in all, if it makes you feel any better, I got my ass handed to me last night too.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

It kills me that you do not have a 360

  • In reply to Artoo:

I thought I was the only one!

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    You guys have 360's?

and MB, it's just Kinect that's for all the dancing children. At least the xbox doesn't have a womens vibrator for a controller.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

ooook, and which woulf you rather have available if your wife walks into your gaming room in lan-gerie?

I'm not saying it has or will ever happen, but I thought it important enough to ask.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I get left alone when I play the box. I'm pretty sure my gf is jealous of it at times.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

The PS3 has a vibrator for a controller?
What kind of hoo-hah are you getting cozy with?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Now I'm not an expert on the female comings and goings but there is a similarity here somewhere...

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Ahhhhh... that's more like a dildo isn't it? That would have made more sense. Not sure what the technical diff is, but I would have gotten dildo more.

Besides, I thought you were talking about the standard delio: http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-2-Dualshock-Controller-Black/dp/B00004YRQ9/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1322870097&sr=1-1

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Best. Scene. Ever.

  • In reply to Artoo:

you two are the only ones!

Fucking 360??? common, that shit is for 14 year old girls playing that dance game. Fags (not that there's anything wrong with that).

These days for $300 you can get a PS3... with 2 games... a gram of coke AND a hooker for the night.

Why don't you two make that shit happen.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

That's the new bundle you can pick up at Best Buy, right?

  • In reply to Shady:

    exactly. Xmas bundle.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

With a new house on the way, the wife has us on some tough budget action.

Additionally, my proclivity towards buying basketball shoes has me in a constant state of "maybe next month".

Plus, I'm a Halo guy. The Xbox has done me well in that arena... MW3 and the like are far too "spawn and die" for me. And, seriously, no sticky grenades?

I missed the "built in blu ray" bus, so until PS3 comes out with some exclusive game I can't do without (I'm looking at you, Twisted Metal), I'll be in Halo 3 land for the foreseeable future.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

    you are excused.

btw, I've always wondered how gears of war is...

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Think 'Resistance', where every soldier is built like Brian Cushing.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I love Asia. Games for two dollars, Ladies not much more.

  • In reply to Artoo:

Hey kiddo, some of us are still keepin it real with a PS2. Got Madden 11 a few weeks ago and that's all the upgrade I need. Audi.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Damn man.. I give you props but man did I hate PS2.

How about you? You're obviously in the biz, too.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

yes sir. Little of everything. Have a little collaboration start up. We're in the middle of a huge redesign and relaunch. I know your pain.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Yep - just out of curiosity, what business domain do you guys work in?
    Mine is somewhat oddball.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    business domain? Like, what industry?

    Enterprise collaboration/productivity cloud software.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Interesting. My team started using Fogbugz, Creately, and Kiln for this project, with Web-ex for meetings/demos.
We deal with a very specific area of government-related software.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

yep our dev/program mngmt. uses fogbugz and kiln too.

We work very closely with WebEx/LiveMeeting, audio, video conferencing. But are more on the side of a basecamp or sharepoint on the cloud type thingy.

Interesting focus. You high-clearence maing. level-5 shit. tell you but I'd need to kill you. know what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink.

OKAY RED THIS TIME~! ::bet $100::

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

yep, I'm hoping that's us with the packers

  • To McNabb or NOT to McNabb? THAT is the question.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the fumbles and interceptions of outrageous backups, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by tying to end them, sign a Donovan McNabb of clearly diminished skills as your #2

My initial reaction is that Donovan's recent performances liken him to one of Ralphie's Old Man's spare tires in A CHRITSMAS STORY : "They were tires only in the sense that they were once round and made of rubber...".

On the other hand, I think he's easily a better alternative as a backup to Josh "Out Of Football For Over A Year" McCown.

McNabb is a Chicagoan. Maybe the prospect of playing in front of the home folks might pump some life into him.

Best option, of course, is that the Bears only need a back-up to hand off and run out the clock in lopsided wins.

    "...perchance to dream..."

And my apologies to the Bard of Avon.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

As mentioned before, McNabb has had this plan going for a LONG time.

We sign JC. He goes to the Skins. He sucks for the Skins. He goes to the Vikes. JC gets hurt. He comes to Chicago. Hanie gets yanked. He goes to Super Bowl. He wins Super Bowl.

C'mon, his name is DONOVAN. Smart guy's name if there ever was one.

Only part of the plan that won't work out was beating the Eagles in the NFC championship game.

  • Can't we play the Eagles again? Wow.

  • Falcons

  • vxmcclure23 about 2 hours ago Nickel back D.J. Moore is out for Sunday's game as his sprained left ankle heals, meaning more Corey Graham. http://t.co/ZhyQZShk

DJ out again, but not that sad because Corey is just as much the man. Great we have depth at nickle... just wish it was at corner and safety.

  • cowboys will not make claim for mcnabb... we're up. Let's see what happens.

  • my god, watching the eagles high (low) lights on ESPN... desean Jackson is a fucking punk. What a clown.

Oh, and Marshawn was in BEAST mode again last night (can’t remember which one of you hates that but there it is). BEAST mode!

    Nice tackling eagles. Jesus.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

The Eagles are damn near unwatchable right now. They suck on O, they suck on D, and I can't even root for Vick to get injured...because he's already injured.
    No entertainment value left.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I love watching Marshaun run da rock though. That motherfer can carry at least three dudes by his dreads and still cross the plain. He's not afraid to stick the banana in the tail pipe if you know what I mean.

  • In reply to Crown:

you take these bananas.... go on... take 'em.

  • In reply to Crown:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Yeah, me.

    "Totally beast"

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Nice run... I was one of the lucky souls that got to watch the original BEAST mode run live in Qwest Stadium (and part of the resultant earthquake, hehe). One of most impressive athletic feats I have ever seen live.

If you get a chance, check out the NFL Films segment where they bring in Lynch to talk about the run, and where they show him other great beastly runs from history. It's pretty damn funny, and he gives the old guys their props... so respect.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

oh, and sage back to the vikings:

"The Vikings filled McNabb's vacant roster spot by claiming quarterback Sage Rosenfels off waivers from the Dolphins, according to a source"

    And why didn't we?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Interesting. Just saw a story yesterday on PFT about how the Texans wanted Sage but the Dolphins didn't want to release him off their non-football injury inactive list something something. Guess they worked it out?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Oh holy fuckstick you cannt be serious. They got first dibs on us right? Tell me we didn't pass on Sage.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    We didn't pass on Sage.
However, the guy was out for the entire year due to mono. I'm not sure you want your third stringer to be coming off of a persistent blood infection.
But the focus this year on our third string QB has been kind of funny, given the old "Who's the most popular athlete in Chicago? The backup QB on the Bears" joke.

  • In reply to Sdwat52:

...and suddenly, Sdwat54 realized he was invisible.

Jeff, thanks for the past few years - I'll keep reading your stuff. When I first found your original blog, it was all very positive, and that's what I liked about it. Shady, Viva, a few others (I think I remember Irish, MBHAP, and I think Doc) were the first commenters I remember, and the blog, though sparsely populated, was really the coolest site I'd found related to the Bears.

Anyway, thanks again, Jeff. I've enjoyed it.

    Outta here.

  • In reply to Sdwat52:

Holy crap SD, don't take it personally. Some posts get a ton of comments and others not so much. You never know which ones. Keep on posting. I've posted things where I thought there would be some reaction and get nothing but crickets and other times just the opposite. Keep on, keeping on brother.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I agree - sometimes I just don't have time yet to read a link and will get back to read it later in the evening, when it's already pretty well buried.
I will check it out in a bit.

  • In reply to Sdwat52:

Good ol' Larry. He digs deep...for pocket lint.

  • Where is everyone ?

  • Love that we signed Bennett to an extension. He is an integral piece of the receiving puzzle for years to come. We fucked up when we got rid of Bobby Ingram. Now we just signed the next fucking gen of Bobby. LOVE IT.

Now let's get a 6'4 230lb video game wide receiver to go along with it. Coach up Knox as our speed guy and sign Mario Williams to play opposite of Peppers while we franchise Forte.

Can you imagine Williams and Peppers lining up on the same line? That is the definition of epic.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Most people do not know that he is a free agent next year.

I think one of the giants dends are becoming a free agent soon.

Reggie Wayne sound good or too old?

  • In reply to Artoo:

too old maybe. need someone in their mid to late 20's that they can build a dynamic duo around with Cutler at the helm. Jerry, get whomever Jay wants you to.

Knox can be a great weapon too. He is a pussy and is the main reason Cutler got hurt but he is useful. like a less pussy version of Desean.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

got wr and look at what we have to look forward too.

  • In reply to Artoo:

Could we steal Jermicheal Finley please?

  • In reply to Artoo:

  • Does anyone else really like the fact that Amobi Okoye is 24 yrs old?

I can see him playing DT for a long time well for the Bears.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

I love it. I couldn't believe that the Texans let him go anyhow, seeing as they surely knew that he would take a couple of years to develop.

Amoeba, Orange Julius, Melted Cheese and Super Mario. I would build a shrine to JA* if he made this a reality.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

  • From http://www.chicagofootballtalk.com/

Your Boy Roy Cutler revealed today: -he fractured & dislocated his thumb, no ligament damage -he had 3 screws & 2 pins inserted in his hand -he's not casted -pins can be removed as early as Dec. 14th or 7 wks thereafter -he can play w/pins in his hand -w/o jinxing it, he's hoping to return before end of season

  • "Lance Louis said he will appeal the $7,500 fine he received for his horse-collar tackle on Kamerion Wimbley’s 73-yard interception return last week. It was a tough hit for Louis, who hustled downfield and fought off a block to make the touchdown-saving play.

Some players believed it was a bogus call because Louis took down Wimbley by the jersey and not the shoulder pads. But according to the NFL rule book, it’s still a horse-collar tackle if you take a player down by the back of the jersey. "

C'mon Goodell, hurry up and make it a flag league.

    Also from the Sun-Times :

"With Earl Bennett signing a four-year extension Friday, the Bears have 11 players who will be free agents after this season: Matt Forte, Caleb Hanie, Israel Idonije, Tim Jennings, Roy Williams, Corey Graham, Brandon Meriweather, Edwin Williams (restricted), Amobi Okoye, Craig Steltz and Kahlil Bell (restricted)."

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Can't blame Godell for that one. The owners voted for it, 27-5. Supposedly, when a running player is pulled from behind in the blouse-collar area, it subjects him to twisting forces with a high likelihood of injury. But somehow, it's not illegal to pull a man down by his hair.

Louis should have hurled his entire 310 lb, 4.7-40 mass into Wimbleys legs.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

Glad Louis didn't go for his legs, though. Wimbley is a likable guy, when he's not fucking us up. Post-game vid:

He says he got grief from his teammates for being run-down by an OL and blames Forte for it (knew he couldn't outrun him; slowed down to get blocking). If you watch the play, you can see, he does slow down. So good play by Forte. Louis actually was blocked, for all the good it did.

Good article on Louis from yesterday's Sun Times (sorry if it's been posted).

It would be fun to see Louis at TE or FB. Too bad the line would instantaneously collapse without him.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

Louis runs further than possibly any other lineman in history and then he's supposed to do what? Not make the tackle? Double L. Legendary Load. What happens when Carimi comes back (whenever)?

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

The hair thing is great. That non-rule blows my mind. If I was playing the Bears I'd totally be dragging out of Barber on every play he carries, then draw the penalty from the retaliation.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Check this out - Adam Jones tackles Torrey Smith by the dreadlocks to save a touchdown.

It's fucking brutal, but totally legal.

    "Its the triggidy-triggidy-triggidy-triggidy Trac"

  • what up my mothereffers!!! Johnny.... sup... dog. No Erik, actually the opposite.

In any case, YES to torn peck addison, YES to brandon marshall and/or anquan boldin (or anyone else in that mold).

    As for our free agents:
    Matt Forte (Franchise)
Caleb Hanie (pending the next 4 games)
    Israel Idonije (or get addison)
    Tim Jennings

  • NYT interview w/Jerry Sandusky. Sandusky says Paterno never spoke to him about allegations of molestation. Sandusky said his biggest worry about having kids around Paterno was that they might be considered a distraction by Paterno.

"I would have dreams of we being in a squad meeting and that door fly open and kids come running through chasing one another, and what was I going to do?” he said. “Because, I mean, Joe was serious about football.”

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

sick motherfucker. hang him on pay-per-view. no place in the world for monsters like that... he's a predator and you cannot rehabilitate predators. He's broken... and will always dangerous.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

and if that isn't the face/voice of a guilty monster I don't know what is.

Let a human lie detector watch this and call out all the obvious lie markers when he speaks. Jesus, this guy is an obvious molester.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

The portions of the interview and some of the material included in the video make it seem like a puff piece, but the Times made the right choices, I think. Sandusky's reactions are bizarre and the surreal quality of the vid just fits. Nobody is fooled. Read the comment section. Lots of human lie detectors there.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

No argument that he's a sick motherfucker, I'll be content knowing that he's rotting in jail for the rest of his life though.

Side note, his lawyer is almost criminally incompetent.

  • In reply to Wicket:

yep. any lawyer who lets that guy do multiple tv interviews (never mind just one) should be disbarred immediately. Maybe it was just karma or good luck that he got him.

  • Wow, that does seem high though maings. Sheesh... he better start catching more than 2-3 balls a game. My good-ness. Wonder how matty is feeling today.

vxmcclure23 about 21 hours ago RT @AdamSchefter: Bears signed Earl Bennetts to a 4-year, $18 million contract that includes $9 million guaranteed.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

If Bennett and Jay can stay healthy it's a good investment. If Earl is getting 3-4 catches a game and they are moving the chains, gotta love that. That's 50-65 first downs a season. Count me in.

Hopefully Matt and Numb Nuts can come to an equitable compromise. If not, Matt's getting franchised. Not a great solution but Matt will get a nice payday.

On Sandusky, I hope he goes to jail and starts catching instead of pitching. All day, every day, until someone puts him out of his misery.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

i don't care if he gets raped in prison or not, i just want someone to fucking kill him because god knows this trial will be a farce with the appeals process.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

put him in gen pop... see how he fares.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB, it's a shame that you and Shady don't like the Team Deathmatch option in MW2. I don't like playing 1 on 1. I like playing in team battles.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    Common maings... don be escared

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Team death-match and capture the flag is bad ass...have to strategize!!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

It's a fair wage for our #1. Knox has barely caught two passes a game averaging a TD every six games. Fully fit, Benentt's our man and it's about half what the top #1s are getting paid. I'd say we got a good deal. Forte will get his.

  • Love that we locked up Bennett. It's hard to find 3 brandon marshalls to play WR for you so you need career guys like Bennett that move the chains rain sleet or snow.

Knox and Hanie seem to have a good relationship so maybe Knoxy turns it on over the last couple of games and we go on a run. Throw it to Bennett too, he is now playing for those escalators.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

But can you imagine our offense with Bennett and Marshall. Mix in Roy/Hester/Knox for the right situation.... Barber, Clutts, Forte, Cutler ... how would that not be the best offense in the league? We were so close. If only Jerry had pulled the trigger on the Marshall deal, I know he would have fallen over backwards to play for us. Then, and only then, would I have laid off Angela. Damn.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Haha, somehow I doubt it Irish... I'll believe the "I'll lay off Angela" talk when I see it ;).

I seem to recall you making a similar proclamation both before and after the Cutler trade (although my memory of this might be faulty)... But it's okay. It really wouldn't be the same around here if you ever stopped picking on JA.

Definitely though, it's hard to imagine how good the offense could be with Marshall, if he played anything like he did when paired with Cutler in Denver... Acquiring him however is another matter.

  • I hope Knox goes into beast mode and then we trade him for a second round pick or another 3rd.

  • In reply to Artoo:

so Jerry can fuck up the pick? Knox can be a solid deep threat speed guy for the Bears. I don't trust Jerry with draft picks.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Exactly, package Knox and some jerk for Marshall... OMIYALE?!

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

I wouldn't trade Johnny, nobody would give up more than a fourth for him anyway. He makes the odd insane catch, fucks up the rest of the time. That's not a receiver you target in FA. I'd keep him around for deep balls and backing up the GOAT on returns. He's worth more on the roster than in FA.

  • Slamdunksky may not be such a slam dunk after all. His lawyers are incompetent? Maybe it's brilliant. They'll try to argue that every potential jury member is biased. Mistrial. Mistrial. It's the only chance they've got. So they have him get on the air and sound real creepy without ever actually admitting he did anything illegal. It's already heavily publicized. Maybe I'm wrong but it could be deliberate.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Reminded me of Jackson tonight.

  • Big-ass WRs/TEs. Here's a list of dudes with more than 6 TD receptions :

Not too many smurfs in there. All hail Wes Welker.

    1 Calvin Johnson 12
    2 Rob Gronkowski 11
    3 Jordy Nelson 9
    4 Eric Decker 8
    4 Jimmy Graham 8
    4 Greg Jennings 8 1
    4 Wes Welker 8
    8 Plaxico Burress 7
    8 Victor Cruz 7
    8 Tony Gonzalez 7
    8 Vincent Jackson 7
    8 Laurent Robinson 7

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Sorry, Irish - this is a suck statistic. CJ is great but he's the only WR on his team and they have no fucking running game. Hell, I think the same thing is true about Welker and Gronk - their numbers are skewed by a) number of relative offensive possessions because their D can't stop anybody, and b) their run-game has been mediocre to poor.
In regards to these stats, I think height is maybe the third or fourth most important correlation that you'd find.
Since I'm pretty sure you're driving at how important a big WR is...let's take out the TE's on the list. and compare a statistically significant number of WR's with YPC, TPC, and a couple of other things factored in, including defensive rank.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I'm not disagreeing on the major point necessarily; I'd like to get a big WR out there, but the only ones available this past off-season were either:
    1) retarded enough to shoot themselves...themselves, once again, in the fucking leg
    2) big team players that waited to have surgery on their chronic hip problems until there was no way for them to contribute to their team
    3) bi-fucking-polar idiots that make TO look stable.

I'd love to have Brandon Marshall if he wasn't acting like a jackass every other week.

  • Titans +1.5
    Falcons -2.5
    Chargers -2

I actually think the Chiefs have a chance to beat the spread with their relatively good defense and Hanie still green. They won't win, but I could see the Bears winning by only 3 or 4. Still, I'm not betting against the Bears if I want to show my face around here.

  • Props on the Pearlman interview, Blogfather. Kinda makes me want to read it. Kinda.

Haven't gotten a single perfect week yet. So my playoff dreams are somewhere south of complete shit. But I'll not give up.

I figure, if I can get six right, that would be like two perfect weeks in one, and he'd have to let me in, right?

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

    There's an easier way.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    OK, just kidding.
