Thanksgiving Football Game Threads (With Bonus Picks Contest!)

Thanksgiving Football Game Threads (With Bonus Picks Contest!)

I don't want to do it. I doubt I'll be able to do it vocally. I'll probably do it with a clenched fist and a few extras beers than normal. It will make me a bit sick. Today, Thanksgiving Day 2011, I'll be rooting for the Green Bay Packers.

On this day it is customary to give thanks and so I give thanks to each and every one of you who has spent even a second on this site. It is my passion, my first love, and I hope to keep filling space with my ramblings for years to come.

Also today...

  • I don't consider the Dallas Cowboys a serious wildcard threat but it wouldn't hurt having the Miami Dolphins knock them off this afternoon. A 6-5 Cowboys teams would only get into the postseason by winning the NFC East.
  • Root for the San Francisco 49ers. Why? Because aside from the quest for a perfect regular season, we'd want the Packers to have something to play for when they meet the Lions the final week of the season. Keeping the Niners close is a good thing.

We'll be doing the Picks Contest as always this weekend but we're giving you an opportunity to get another notch in your belt. You must get all three Thanksgiving games right to be credited with a perfect week. All picks must be in by 12:30 PM EST. Here are the lines:

Packers -6 LIONS / COWBOYS -7 Dolphins / RAVENS -3.5 49ers

The Commenter Perfect Weeks: New Bear in Town (3), tobijohn (3), FQD1911 (2), SC Dave (2), BigDaddy (2), BossBear90 (2), Ufficio (2),  Michael L (2), Shady (2), MikeV in OR (2), greenbayman (1), Sacramento's #1 Bears Fan (1), ben in norcal (1), CanadaBear (1), #76 Mongo Murph (1), TheFifth (1), DYLbears23 (1), EnderWiggin (1), IrishSweetness (1), Who is Willie Gault (1), SC Dave (1)

  • Packers

That is my second perfect week!

  • In reply to EnderWiggin:

    I already had my first?

  • In reply to EnderWiggin:

    Illegal procedure?

  • Jebus, the Ravens are favorites to beat the Niners? How did that happen?

    Dolphins +7
    Lions +6
    Niners +3.5

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

    buttsteak.... lions???? Really?

    -200 points

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'm thankful they lost. But really, you prefer the Champions?

    And that's Crunch Buttsteak.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

I would only have prefered more injuries on both sides.

We are chasing detroit not the packers. We can't catch the packers anyway we cut it. So lesser evil. And I'm starting to hate detroit more.

I shortened it up... but you're right, adding the crunch does provide more impact.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I get it. My picks weren't meant to be serious, just contrary to thebigcheese.

  • Holy crap, either you guys wake up really early or live in a Thailand hut time zone like Irish.

I'm looking forward to the Harbaugh Bowl as well as the gravy bowl. For once I'm pulling for a FG fest.

On the opposite end, the GB-DET game is going to be close to 80 combined points.
Can I wish broken thumbs all around in the GB-Lions game on Thanksgiving? Am I really that low? Yes, yes I am.

As much as I despise these new dirty Lions, and how their loss would benefit our wild card hopes, I won't be able to stomach the Pack trolls yapping until time ends if they go undefeated, much like I can't stomach fruit cake.

It's prime time, which usually means Romo choke time (which would be nice Karma for that Jones-Orton "gamesmanship"). However, he has only lost like 2 games in November - which trend will prevail?

On a weird FF anomaly note, I have 5 players on the field today and another one on Monday. That means 6 out of 9 on my team will not be playing Sunday.

    Enjoy today, Jive Turkeys.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

All a perfect regular season means is that it'll be all the sweeter when we crush them at Lambeau in January.

  • Even though i'm european and don't give a **** about thanksgiving, doesn't mean i'm not thankful for this site. It's fun to have a fan blog to read about the Bears, from people that care even more about them then me.

Je vous souhaite donc un bon appétit, et un grand merci a tout le monde pour vos contributions! Je vais boire un bonne biere a votre santé ce soir :-)

  • In reply to BXLBearsFan:

  • Lord, I thank you in advance for the Turkey whoopin you're gonna put on the Cheese.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

My bad. The Turkey turned out to be Suh.

Peanut. Love me some Peanut. Hilarious. If he did more shit like that, I bet he'd get some pro-bowls. It's all just a popularity contest.

Have a great Thanksgiving everybody! I'll be out raking leaves since my family doesn't get here until tomorrow. Enjoy the football!

  • Johnny Carson :
Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And the discover, once a year is way too often.

Andre Kelley : This was a really big year for me. I got to go home for Thanksgiving and sit at the adul'ts table. That's 'cause, you know, somebody had to die for me to move up to the plate.

  • In reply to huntinbare:

I liked sitting at the kids table. Zero supervision. Always a good thing.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    amen on that

    god bless the funny jews

  • In reply to huntinbare:

all jews are funny hunti... just look at NB.

  • happy thanksgiving guys. enjoy.

Oh, and I love how the interviewer got his feelings all hurt when peanut said he didn't get the joke.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

That guy is an idiot. Car wreck of an interviewer.

  • wow, that is a nice GAY porn stache aaron.

  • interesting discussion about jay close to rodgers and our oline.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

And you have to stick around for the weather report video after, it's worth the wait.

  • So I’ve been thinking about something lately.

Who’s the one (last) guy that usually ends up tackling hester to save a TD on returns? Yep, the fucking kicker.

So why don’t we leave one guy back to spy on/shadow the kicker to make sure he doesn’t make the tackle? I know you never know which way a return will break, and I know you want everyone down on the ball at the point of attack, but seem logical to leave one guy back… since it’s almost always the kicker who runs him out.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Interesting idea but, my guess is if we devoted somebody to the kicker, Hester wouldn't even get THAT far (most of the time).

  • I just found something you should all ask your wife for, for christmachuannukakawanzafestivus....

  • wow, cool... and expensive:

  • Packers, Dallas, and Ravens

  • niners, cowbows, pack

  • Packers -6
    Dolphins +7
    RAVENS -3.5

  • I come here first for Bears commentary. I want another 25 years out of you, Jeff. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • The good news is lots of injuries so far. Now we just need Fuckdodgers to get concussed.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

yes please. That would be karmic poetry.

  • Of course Kevin Smith got injured, OF COURSE.

I woke up this morning and said, "Fuck it, I'm all in with the Lions. Screw the Fudge" and put him in instead of Sproles.

He looked GREAT - for one quarter. It's the story of his life.

Can ANYONE stop the back shoulder throw? Anyone? Beuller?

  • Since today is clearly a day for sentimentality, I'll join in. As a man who hails far from Chicago-land. I am thankful that I finally have a comfortable bar-stool in a virtual Bears-Cheers. The Bears are my first love. But unlike real-life love affairs where the infatuation period often runs dry, I still find myself thinking about the Bears constantly.

    I love you guys, mangs.

How's the little one, Johnny? And the missus?

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

    you too doc.

How are you guys coming? Getting ready?

I love the smell of baby poo in the morning... smells.... like, victory.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

T-minus one month and counting. I'll be in Portland this weekend for the civil war game (the only college game I care about all year (Go Beavs (Sorry Huntin'))) and I'm a bit nervous about being that far away. Things are good though, mang. Thanks for askin'.

    Clipped yet? Me neither.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

good luck if you are going that far I hope you come home with a duck pellet
    f the ducks this weekend

  • In reply to huntinbare:

I thought you were a ducks fan? You from Oregon, Hunt.

By the way, You told me once how you came by your handle. I thought another nice way to honor both da bears and da best songwriter of all time would be "Talkin' bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues"

....Stay in m’ kitchen, have m’ own picnic . . .In the bathroom.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

i am from "The Barn" a SW suburb
the ducks are just a passing fancy
I like them cause when I get home on sat. after 6:30 usually
they have been one of the only teams playin late on sat. night
and I like the fast pace they come at teams with

  • In reply to huntinbare:

bear moutin is a place I would love to see

Is this the point where I want a mad runaway blimp to crash into Ford Field and incinerate both sets of fuckers? Failing that, a mad sniper starts shooting into both sets of sidelines?

I don't know. But in the greater scheme of things, given the way a certain team has been behaving this season, I'll not cry too much at the current wtf-ing that the Cheese are handing out, at least in the second half.

  • In reply to Dáithí Ó Mórdha:

I was fairly surprised that the fans in Detroit didn't torch the bathrooms after Suh got kicked out.

  • God I love seeing the lions get shanked. No class motherfuckers.

Now all we need are more guys going down.

  • fb_avatar
    In reply to MB30SD:

Karma is bollocks, but seeing Stafford getting picked so much is surely payback for what he did to DJ.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Suh needed to stomp on Rodger's head.

Might as well make the suspension worth it.

  • all three Stafford ints were intended to TE Pettigtrew.

Maybe he should try throwing it to someone else

  • Here's the scary thing about the Packers. They've damn near dominated every team they've played. And they've done this with an underachieving defense and little to no running game. I don't know about the running game, but I know their defense has far from peaked for the season.

I hate the motherfuckers, but there's no denying their greatness.

Which will only make our NFC championship victory this season all the more sweeter.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

fuck them, they look vulnerable except for rodgers and his 20 #1 WRs. Not sure if we can do it with Haney, but I was VERY confident we could have with cutty. Let’s see how haney does over the next few weeks. It’s still possible.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

The Lion's D proved that if a team gets penetration and hits with its front four, GB can be slowed down significantly. They only had 7 points in the first half.

Stafford just gave them 3ints - and the team in general couldn't tackle and kept getting penalized.

Our team is disiplined, sure tackling, and on good days, disruptive up front.

ALSO, while watching the game and asking myself, "Why can't anyone stop the back shoulder throw?" I had an epiphany. It's simple.

Rodgers relies on the back shoulder throw A LOT. That works against man (prob why they switch to 3-4 WR sets). But against zone, it doesn't fly, esp cover 2. That's probably why he struggles against us so much.

However, Rodger's is smart enough to then squeeze it in the seems where the TEs kill us, but that's also a risky proposition as Urlacher and Briggs are always lurking about - then it becomes a cat and mouse game.

I like our chances. That first half can be used as a blue print.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    * seams

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

I really thought we would have beaten them in Lambeau all things being equal. Their D couldn't have hung with our O, but let's see what happens with Caleb. Maybe a little dinking and dunking high percentage stuff helps us as much as Cutty's close-your-eyes laser darts would. Damn, if Alex Smith can go on a roll like this, why not?

  • I know its too late to enter this one, but I was perfect last week, so I should have 3 now...

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Hey Dave, I'm not sure if you ever caught my apology on that one thread a week ago or so. I completely missed the intent of your post and let my defensiveness get the best of me. I humbly apologize for jumping down your throat. Peace, mang.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

It's all good Doc. Most of us let our words get away with us now and then. I've certainly done so.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

    once again f the ducks
    have a great experience
you deserve nothing but the best
    my wise and humble friend

  • we're rooting for the dolphins today right? fuck both teams.

  • holy shit... it's like their whole team

"BradBiggs 4 minutes ago #Raiders list 14 players on inj report and had 7 players not participate, including Jacoby Ford, Richard Seymour, Denarius Moore, Run DMC"

    Run DMC... ha.

  • The East Coast sucks dick.
I have my choice this weekend for the 4pm game between:
    Philly - New England
    Washington - Seattle.

The f-cking 3-7 Redskins vs. the 4-6 Seattle Suckhawks.

    Are you SERIOUS?

Not even the Redskins fans around here want to watch that shit-fest.

Baby Jebus, I am thankful that I can watch the game at the...wait, you say we're having our Thanksgiving dinner Sunday afternoon because family is driving in? So, no, you are shit out of luck MBHP?

Ugh. Enjoy the game guys. I will probably be hoping that someone breaks into my house and finds a stream of the game and leaves the computer on. I could listen to it on XM except for the fact that is in my CAR and not in my LIVING ROOM.

    (bashing my head against keyboard)....

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I don't suppose you could get away with a drive-thru living room?
Never know, it could become trendy with the Hollywood set.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Deep breaths. Fire up the old interweb ...

  • Hope you guys get a chance to read Suh's explanation and non-apology. He really is a dope (besides being a dirty cheapshot artist). It will be interesting to see how the midget frat boy defends him.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

What an absolute knob-jockey. Everyone in my house (including the folk who don't have the slightest idea about american football) said that it was disgraceful. If you did that to a random on the street you'd be in jail.

How much you want to bet some PR slob took him aside from the moment he was canned and drilled that into him til he got it down?

Needless to say, if Suh does not get suspended then there's clearly a strong bias to the 'star names' in the NFL. I still blame the influence of Vanden Bosch on this though, that guy is a grade A prick.

If it doesn't happen well, I hope the Lions can come to terms with their QB getting the shit kicked out of him and his pussy glove for the remainder of the season.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

Well, it's clear how to handle Suh now. Put in a scrub, have him hold him or cheapshot him and watch Suh get himself kicked out of the game.

    Suh: The new Haynesworth?

    Go Phins.

And while your argument makes sense to me Jefe, I hate the 49ers as much as any team. So, GO RAVENS!!!!

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

Doc, I'm sure that's one of the reasons we get along. Both of us are ruled by emotions. I understand why I should root for this team or that team because it will help the Bears. However, if I hate a team there's no fucking way I'm ever going to root for them. Just not gonna happen. If I hate both teams equally I can be logical. Otherwise, not so much.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

That and big boobied bicycle babes.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

No doubt. I remember that asshole Forrest Gregg encouraged his squad to be a bunch of cheapshot artists. Paybacks were hell.

I agree with Lovie. There's plenty of chances between the whistles to prove how tough you are. Ask Calvin Johnson about that hit from Briggs. Megatron was a non factor in the game after that hit and there was nothing dirty about it.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

No PR rep would have drilled that into his head, DYLbear. Suh would have been told to admit that he lost his temper, and to personally apologize to the player he stomped. Or he would have been told to keep his stupid mouth shut altogether.

Detroit apparently is unable or unwilling to reign him in. And Suh obviously hasn't learned anything from the immediate consequences of his action. So the league will hit him with a heavy fine and suspension, I think.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

I used PR in a general manner MOB, but any guy they did hire to tell them what to say would be putting Schwartz's words and thoughts into their head. Keeping up the tough guy image. The league should deal a massive fine to Schwartz for not being able to control his players at all. And for being a massive douche.

The video replay shows clear intent. Balls to his 'stepping out the way' crap. The severity of the fine will reveal the leagues true colours and hopefully they give him something similar to what Haynesworth got, if not more severe to set an example in this new age of heightened player safety.

  • In reply to M Onan Batterload:

I think this is all coming from the coach. I don't know how many roughing the passer calls there was in the Detroit game, but after 5 on Cutler you had to assume this was a mandate from the coach - who looks like a schmuck anyway. I can see that tool in the locker room with Suh telling him he's all that and he needs to have the NFL fear him.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

Suh has decided that he'd going to be the NFL's badass. Wrong era dude. Good luck with that.

  • Not sure if anyone has posted this link previously but if you're not in the Chicago metro and without the NFL package area it's a pretty good tool to determine whether you get to watch the Bears on real television or one of those low quality pirated internet feeds:

  • I lost my picks on Da Cheese game. I just couldn't bring myself to pick em. Oh and Suh. He he he. What an idiot!

  • For all those that think we need number 1 picks on offense....look at the entire 49ers offense. Edwards, Ginn, Crabtree, Smith, V.Davis, Staley, Lupati, A.Davis.

Hardly an explosive offense is it? Arguably the best player, Gore, he was drafted in the 3rd.

  • In reply to DYLbear23:

And it's not an explosive offense. They've had trouble putting up 6 points on a piss poor team like the Ravens. Alex Smith is still Alex Smith.

  • 49ers stopping the run from 1 yard out.Man, they want to keep that stat.

  • when I read Bigg's 10 things on chargers game
he talked about some possible replacements for "the long snapper"
now Mr. Massey was looking good then and he is a bear with solid credentials now
I wondered ; at the time , why he wasn't the initial rreplacement
Massey played in 135 games for the Rams and was good on 1,050 of 1,051 snaps,

    the moneybaggers scrubbed the audio

put on some headphones and crank that mother
    it will grip ya!

now did you recognize Jools Holland the piano player?
have you heard any of his discs?
he has a great show on the BBC and he brought on terriffic
    talent and showcased their songs
His discs are a great listen if you like piano in your rock and roll stew
Daithi O you got to know Jools

  • In reply to huntinbare:

  • In reply to huntinbare:

Jools is the man, he breaks all the new acts (or old acts that haven't made it yet) - and gets the legends to play on his New Year's show. The radio equivalent used to be John Peel, he was the first person to introduce us to Public Enemy. But Jools Holland is one degree of separation away from any musician or famous person worth knowing on the planet.

Crap trivia - Apparently some scientific algorithm writing bunch have analysed Facebook's data and discovered that we are only 4.3 degrees of separation away from knowing anybody, not 6.

    So there's that.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Wow. That IS interesting. I'd like to know how they figured it. Sounds like an average or something. They should use the graph diameter concept....the distance between the two people with the most degrees of separation between any pairs of people. I presume also that it is 4.3 degrees of facebook seperation. Since, for example, I'm not on Assbook.
