Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears Game Preview

Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears Game Preview

The photo above is what happens to gear from Super Bowl losers.

Didn't the Bears just play a game?  I was kind of shocked to realize it was Wednesday night and I had to write a game preview already.  Anyway the Bears play their second consecutive game in primetime, against another division rival, and this is the definition of a must win.

WHY DO I LIKE THE CHICAGO BEARS THIS WEEK?

  • I always like the Chicago Bears.
  • The one-dimensionality of the Minnesota Vikings on offense.  The Bears will commit this entire week to stopping the run game, containing Adrian Peterson.  They'll be successful to a degree.  I can easily see AP breaking off a long one at some point Sunday night but I don't think he'll find enough consistency on early downs to keep Minnesota in control.
  • Donovan McNabb is not very good anymore.  And he's nowhere near accurate enough on any routes outside of the screen game Minnesota rarely utilizes.  If McNabb is able to beat the Bears secondary, dissect the Cover 2 and win then we should not expect the Bears defense to stop another quarterback on their 2011 schedule.
  • Having seen a lot of Leslie Frazier's work thus far, I think it's safe to say the Bears are not going to face a coaching disadvantage this week.
  • Jay Cutler is starting to put heat on Martz & Company in his weekly press conferences.  He's calling for better protection schemes.  He's calling for quicker releases.  And I think he's going to get them Sunday night.  Couple success in the short passing game with Matt Forte's team MVP season and the Bears will move the ball efficiently.
  • Devin Hester has not played a return game as poor as Monday night in an awful long time.  He's back in primetime, where he's thrived, and I think he'll light up the scoreboard against the Vikings.
  • The Bears are benching Frank Omiyale.  You know when you watch poker on television and they tell you the percentage possibility each player has of winning each hand?  Well the fewer snaps Omiyale plays for the Bears the higher their possibility of victory rises.  So if Omiyale plays 1% of snaps, the Bears have a 94% chance of victory.  If he plays 10% of snaps, the Bears have a 73% chance of victory.  If he plays 100% of snaps, the Bears have 1% chance of winning and 100% chance of recording the most false starts in the NFL that week.  Seriously, though, is Chris Williams really not a better option than this guy at tackle?
  • Look at the passing games the Bears have faced thus far.  Since beating up Matt Ryan in Week One, the Bears have faced 3 of the top 5 passing offenses around.  (And Detroit is a not too shabby 10th.)  Now they actually get the opportunity to face a team with weaker passing statistics then their own.  I think they pounce on it.
  • Never underestimate the "need it more" factor in the NFL.  The Vikings don't have any delusions of titles this season.  The Bears still do.  They'll approach this game like their season depends on it.  The Vikings will be relaxing off their beat down of the Cardinals.

  • In reply to lobotobear:

My day off today. I will be enjoyin that tonight while im makin home made burgers, and smokin a joint.

  • You slaughtering the cow and everything?

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Wipes it ass, cut its horn, and run twice by the fire.

  • Enjoy mang. Enjoy.

  • In reply to lobotobear:

    fucking EPIC!

  • In reply to lobotobear:

    amazing

  • I second the notion that Omiyale being benched is a big factor in da Bears favor!

But I cannot imagine how we could not face a coaching disadvantage, Jeff.

  • I know we all feel the same, but i wish the owners would realize this.

We seen lovies best. We seen angelos best. They had how long? We are up and down all year every year. They cannot win a superbowl or build a dynasty. So if we seen their best. And theyre not getting better. Why do we still have them?

  • Jay's smart. he's using the media to manipulate the coaches (and possibly the front office) since the local & national media feel sorry for all the abuse he's taken (on and some off the field). we'll see if it works, though...

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    +1

    FQ!!!

  • In reply to FQD1911:

OR Martz will make Jay take 9 step drops to make a point...

  • In reply to 4ever85:

not if he wants to keep a job. see Ron Turner...

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    meh

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Jay vs. Martz? not even this ownership is stupid enough to pick the wrong side.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Um... depends on who you mean by "wrong side". My bet would be on Martz, because they ARE stupid enough.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

the strange part of this whole "social pecking order"; inside the organization, is that cutler can't just go right into this man's office and speak his mind.
What kind of shitty existence is this; when an employee can't go to a manager and tell the boss that maybe his plan is not working. Good God man; I got in my postmasters grill today; and demanded answers, to some wicked failure within the system.
Martz reacts to the press as if he could change to short passes on a dime. Yeah! well why not try doing that once during a game; after proving to yourself that your system is producing nothing. It seems he says this cause ; everybody is claomoring for it. Rather than agreeing that it might have been the prudent thing 3 and 1 half weeks ago.
It took him this long to go back to the rebuilding schemes of last year. He ran himself into the wall 3 times before it registered?
I ask you. Just what is martz going to do; if cutler says enough is enough in a meeting? At this point he has shown himself to be unapproachable. He probrably listened better when he was a hungry coach.
figuring this out through the type of dialogue I saw in the press this week, shows me that there are some internal language issues at the hallowed halas hall.

"Sharing one's viewpoint for the betterment of all." - the Asian perspective. I tried that as sales and marketing manager for a car accessories factory in Thailand, HB. I suggested that it might be fairer to pay the workers on time, and not to use the company's cash flow as the owner's personal pocket money. I spent six months looking for another job.

The Bears seem to play similar games with players that get lippy.

  • I have been the thorn in this blogs side re: angelo since I came here a couple years ago. All of the evidence is in gents. The research is finished. The results have been posted.

    It's time. Period.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    #1000000000000 x3

  • Is that some kind of new-fangled scientific notation, Fres?

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

Mathematical representation .... to the power of chiba.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

younger owners think like that. These older folks do not register the same level of disappointment as you if the revenues are good.

  • btw, that fucking picture is hilarious.

  • Yep, those T-shirts are the closest we get.

We have 4 teams in the NFL giving up more yards on the ground. AP is likely to exceed the 136 YPG we're giving up. The Vikes are the 4th best run defense in the league, but their pass D sucks as bad as ours.

Air McNair, or the season is over. And we're not idiots for saying so.

  • Both PFT jerks picked the Vikes by 3.

    Oy.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

Cant blame them. Bears as always have no respect.

I believe in the players to turn it around. Lets hope they do.

  • fuck man, brings a tear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_rFTD7OfVg

    btw, Jim Brown looks terrible.

  • I think you're nuts ... no mention of Vikings defense?

  • In reply to Adam Oestmann:

What's there to mention? Why bother writing we have to block the opposing team every week?

  • A7, this is for you maing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn4OgCVLge0

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Lmao MB, assclown. At least he'll bet Miami this week.

Cam Newton would throw for 650 yds and run for 75 more and still find a way to lose.

  • In reply to A7Xthebest:

    Tebow's a gamblin' man? Surprising.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

    that's not scriptural
unless you're rolling dice for the Lord's robe

  • In reply to A7Xthebest:

    welcome.

  • I don't like country music, but the video is... nice. And sammy hagar and ted nugent are in it, so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKZqGJONH68

  • In the preseason, I predicted Steelers would missed play-offs because their D would suddenly get old - well, guess what - their D got old this year.

    BUT SO DID OURS.

    Briggs? ineffective

    Lach? Ineffective

    Pepp? Ineffective

By ineffective I mean MEDIOCRE (at best), and THOSE guys can't afford to be mediocre for our D to win.

Everyone else has been Mediocre (Except our Safeties which have played horribly), but that was expected.

Our only hope is the GB and DET keep winning so that by the time we play them a second time around, they'll be resting their stars.

    How u like them apples?

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    sour. Granny smith?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    It's more like this

    http://youtu.be/MZ70hbvaPdU

  • In reply to 4ever85:

I disagree on 'Lach. He's just playing LB all by himself this year.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

yeah but we're just coming into apple season
we just been eating last years rotten batch
I promise a good crop coming up
I just bought some amish cider from lancaster co.
Those gentle souls tend to those beautifu,l trees with TLC
bottoms up bears... this cider is organically for you from the hands of god's humble people
A toast: May you play....forever young

  • In reply to huntinbare:

    oh that's good
if i could I would pour you all a tall one

  • In reply to 4ever85:

So as far as we can tell, the only people playing in anyway, shape or form up to scratch are .... the guys in the offensive backfield. Everyone else is sucking. Excellent.

Anyone see Dallas upsetting the Pats this week? 1/4 looks mighty short on the Pats up against the #1 defense ....

Somehow the Bears are 4/6 to beat the Queens straight up.

  • I was listening to the Score 670 this morning and Moon Mullin is bitching about how Cutler shouldn't be admitting that it affects him a little that their is no fucking pocket protection or stability. he said Cutler should not let anyone see him sweat.

Uhhh, Moon Mullin you fucking old ball sac, you're talking about the guy who fucking laughs at press conferences about getting hit. His whole career he has been a gamer and never has backed away from a challenge or the prospect of getting fucking drilled. you think it's going to stop now that he gets sacked and pummeled??

Cutler is the fucking dude that get's rocked and says fuck it and goes back in to take another shot regardless of whether he knows which side is up or not.

If our lineman played with that much fucking heart we'd be running for 200 every fucking game.

    McNabb FUCKING DEAD.

Our media can eat a bag of dicks.

  • In reply to Gucci Mang:

Who the fuck is Moon Mullin and why should any of us give a rat's ass what he thinks?

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Chicago Football beat reporter. I was just laughing at the stupidity of his comment. It was similar to Steve Youngs critique of Cutlers footwork as he was dodging certain death.

  • In reply to Gucci Mang:

I think this is a polite way of him telling his boys that their play is fuckin' with his head and vision
they need to hear this from him; and then try to work harder
their only chance at fame and recognition goes through the success of jay

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Better than Uncle Larry schtick, thats for sure.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Too bad the McCaskey's and Ted Phillips are not reading.

  • Welp, I do not have as high of expectations as you do Blog-Father. I know McNabb is washed up but he could get lucky here and there and if Peterson is NOT shut down we are going to be in big trouble. Now I add The Vikes Defensive pressure.

So far as a unit they have accomplished:

    16 Sacks
    35 Tackles for a Loss
    6 interceptions

Not bad at all compared to the rest of the NFL. These guys are NO PUSH OVERS and if the Bears come in thinking they are just going to walk over them they are DEAD wrong. BEAR DOWN !!! This game is solely in the hands of our players...since I have zero confidence in our coaches.

    Bears 24
    Vikes 21

  • In reply to Bears-4-Ever:

PLUS...I cannot remember a game when AP didn't rush for close to 200 yds against us.

I hear that Conte is going to be seeing some action, and maybe even Anthony Walters, but isn't this the WRONG week to get a converted CB and a "purerer" S into the starting lineup to tackle AP?

IF anything, Merriweather and Harris will for once be an asset with their hard hits and no coverage skills. After all, when was the last time McNabb through a bomb - and even if he does, who on the Vikes is going to catch it?

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    *threw

    jesus...typo machine today

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Meriweather sux. Get him out as soon (actually before) AP

    See how I did that?

  • In reply to SC Dave:

replacing Meriweather with Conte is a bad idea.

  • In reply to Gucci Mang:

We will see come game time.

As of now, Meriweather is bad. Really bad - the worst excuse for a safety since AA. Recklessly flying around hitting people, including teammates, does not a good safety make.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Not true, 85. Actually the Bears have had quite a bit of success limiting AP for a while now.

"But I found it worth noting that Peterson has not averaged 4.0 yards per carry in a game against the Bears since 2008, He hasn’t topped 94 yards in a game vs. the Bears since then either.

"Coincidence or not, 2009 happened to be when Rod Marinelli arrived as part of the Lovie Smith staff."

  • Does anyone else remember how the Bears always seem to resurrect struggling opponents QB's when we play them? I seem to remember more than a few have had banner days against our D. I think this game will be a toss up. Whoever goes to bed earlier the night before the game will win.

  • Hey, couldn't we have shipped away Angelo along with those SB shirts?

We probably did, and they shipped him back.

  • STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I REALLY CAN'T BELIEVE WE CAN CALL ANYBODY WHO HAS A HAND IN RUNNING THIS ORGANIZATION A PROFESSIONAL.....
I HAVE NO WORDS FOR THIS....

    http://t.co/10xu9Xtg

  • In reply to SoILBearsFan:

soil, I am having a hard time getting excited about anything these buffoons do these days. My guess is that Harris is still not 100%. On Meriweather, he probably deserves to sit on the bench. What can it hurt? Like I said a few days ago, bubble players will probably be our starters by the half way point of the season.

  • In reply to SoILBearsFan:

    Ha Ha, I knew it.

    BearBlog poll.

Which line-up will be changed the most in 2011?

    A) The offensive line

    B) The safeties

    C) Your FF bench

  • In reply to 4ever85:

you forgot the most hopeful (and maybe most wishful) option:

    D) The front office and/or coaches

  • In reply to SoILBearsFan:

    fuck really?

Man, this is going from bad to worse.

Hee hee: "Kmac** at 1:38 PM October 13, 2011
This move, of course, is like plugging a leaky boat with two drill bits."

  • In reply to MB30SD:

maybe this is a kick in the ass because they looked like shit
most of the games turned on big plays; that's embearassing to be breaking records that are in the negative column

if you tarnish a storied reputatiuon; you should sit for a bit.
this may be a safe time to jerk their chains

look at what brian said when asked about screaming at briggs during the game
he said that was not what was happening...he was pissed at the way the gaps were not filled
these guys behind them are out of position too many times

Shut up sit down and I'll tell ya when your goin' back in
you looked like shit on the field
now i'm gonna let you look like shit on the sideline

pay attention the rest of you ; next game this could be you
someones head had to roll son

  • I just can't fathom how Wright, Conte are better options.....
I'm beyond frustrated at this point....

  • In reply to SoILBearsFan:

I say we go even further and start

    Dom Decicio instead of Roach
Reed instead of an inj Pep
Wooten even if he is injured instead of Izzy

    Hurd over Knox
Ed Williams over Omiyale (they'll slide LL over to RT)
    Spaeth over offsides Davis

    Fuck it, why not?

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Can I get in there? Maybe just one series?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Ginny in her motor chair to play wildcat qb

  • In reply to gpldan:

    nice

  • In reply to MB30SD:

you're most likely faster than Sazen, have better hands than Hester, and can get off the line more effectively than Knox.

    Get in there!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    Actually 85, I:
    * am just a tad faster than harris
    * hit like merriwether
    * cover WR like briggs
    * ...but have a penis like Major

Not sure if that works out to a net-positive or net-negative.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    *delusional like Lovie

    (I keed, I keed)

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

wow. so it's.... OOOOOWWWWWWNNNNNN then is it? aight then.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

btw, how's the tribe.... and I know you're not jewish.

  • In reply to SoILBearsFan:

It is impossible for me to imagine that either will be as bad as Meriweather

  • Did Leslie Frazier attend the 85 Bear White House thing?

  • wtf?!?!

Did you guys even know this?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    what?

I never knew it was MANDATORY for a C/G to wear a microphone.

Is it for NFL Films? hmmm

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Actually, from what I understand, it's for a study on the impact zones on players bodies during line play. Seriously. It has nothing to do with NFL films, as far as I am aware anyway.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    huh, interesting. thanks MBP

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I thought he was going to do that for the Detroit game but evidently the brain trust thought "we got this covered".
    We know how that goes.

  • Is higha higha baby..... Go bears.

  • Hey, Jeff, have you watched the parody South Park did on the NCAA and EA (a little FB too)?

    It's hilarious!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Wow. So much like the real thing.

  • I just had an epiphany boys. Jerry's gonna trade Forte for 2 starting guards, a shutdown corner and bag of bagels.

  • And it begins. McNabb to air it out?

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/10/13/frazier-tells-mcnabb-you-cant-play-this-game-cautious/

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    Well, why not?

Our D doesn't inspire FEAR in anyone - in fact - they inspire, what's the opposite of fear? oh yeah, HOPE. They inspire hope in every opposing offense they face, even ones that have a has-been QB and no WRs...

You know when you glance at the schedule and say, "yeah, we can take them" - we're that team now.

  • I love weed.... Maybe angelo and lovie should jump in my boat.

  • they would get paranoid about what they have just done
not a good idea to bring that much reality at once

  • In reply to huntinbare:

Maybe they need the paranoia of their jobs. Hehehehe

  • Lovie's not stoned? He looks stoned - and it would explain a lot - his blown timeouts, challenges, lack of half-time adjustments...

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    NyQuil, 85. NyQuil.

  • Yeah, perhaps were their reality altered to a great enough degree, they might recognize talent. So maybe we should wait until next year's draft?

Martz, on the other hand, could probably use some right now. It would likely reduce the vapidity of his comments to the press.

  • We want to trade for this guy?

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7098026/miami-dolphins-brandon-marshall-seeks-passion-second-quarter-ejection-vs-new-york-jets

    he has some strange desires
i would be thinkin' a two touchdown game or something normal like that

gettin' kicked out can be good for entertainment value if he puts his heart into it.

  • Gonna miss VIP on the Swole out there. Yes, he's a dirty player prone to the cheap shot and late hit, but he's so damn entertaining trying to make somebody be his bad bitch tonight. It's even sad in a funny way watching his dreads roll around while he's chasing down the guy he let get over the top on him.

Now what do we get? Pringles and Starsky? BOOOORRRRRING.

We get to sit around and speculate why Urban Meyer never taught Pringles how to tackle, and watch a guy that Gary Fencik could outrun on one leg play safety.

At lest we know Jennings can shut Berrian down.

  • In reply to gpldan:

maybe you should run a pool on how many plays it takes before lovie gets a change of heart....can he afford to last a quarter
or is the measuring stick gonna be points for him....or 75+ yard plays

I just hope for the sake of the season that whatever the heck is going on ; it all works out for the best

  • Anyone else a little disappointed on how the "Football Life" is going ?? Could we make him look anymore petty in the superbowl? what the fuck is going on here?

  • In reply to Gucci Mang:

I watched it Johnny. LaDainian Tomlinson described Walter best when he said Walter was "inspirational".
I've never seen a running back fight for every yard like Walter. He almost NEVER ran out of bounds, and he always placed the ball forward after he was tackled.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

it was a great time watching those clips tonight
    and seeing his smile

  • In reply to TheFifth:

The whole SB thing does look pathetic. Ditka gets way too much stick for it. What's Ditka's job? Winning. We won the SB 46-10. Job done. Next.

Does jog the memory though and makes you think how come we don't use 8-ball as a goal-line back, or make Paea earn his crust by carrying the rock?

But seriously, Jeff Pearlman? Ashton Kuchter? Surely it was worth tracking Bill Murray down. I didn't like how it made him look so human. I don't like to see my heroes being human. Didn't like how they kept showing Connie after she became upset either. Ham-fisted direction.

Seeing some of those runs again makes you realise how there isn't anyone like him in the game. Who's got moves now? No running back comes close since Sanders. It's like no-one has any moves anymore.

  • Denver just announced that they are releasing Brandon Loyd, I'd take him over phsyco nuts in Miami any day. Never could figure out why we released him anyway....Oh wait..his is a true wide receiver...what am I thinking.

DavidHaughabout 8 hours agoRT @BradBiggs: Entering this week, #Bears have changed starting safeties 50 times under Lovie Smith since '04. http://t.co/SQgOcJIh

  • Let's hear your game predictions boys.

We have the 29th ranked defense. We're up against one of the top rushing Defenses (4th). We have no offense, no defense. We get smacked. Season done.

Always money to be made though. Babies' shoe fund is standing at 1354 from 150 at the start of the season.

OAK, BAL, CIN, WAS, NO, DET.

Any thoughts on the above? I think only NO is an away game ...

PIT and GB are at unbackable odds around 1/12. 1/4 Pats very possibly lose an upset to the Girls.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

I'd take San Fran all day long against the Lions Irish. Think about it.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

The Niners single threat at wideout is Crabtree.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I thought he was out ? Aren't Crabtree and Morgan both out? I just saw Crabtree was limited in practice. Braylon Edwards is out. That leaves Vernon Davis and Gore. ALex Smith? The game is in Detroit.
I was thinking about Detroit for one of four teams. DET, OAK, NO and DET. Maybe Cincy over the Colts would be a better choice?

See that Earl Bennett is listed as full participation in practice along with Woot Woot. Carimi, Toe, Pep and Peanut DNP.

  • In reply to gpldan:

They have one of the best D's in the league gp. Detroit's O is suspect. Their game against us is a testament to that. If our secondary kept their assignments we would have beaten them.

  • Friday Morning First Impulses:
Our running game will be non existent.
Cutty will have to take control of this game.
Special Teams has to pick up the slack.
McNabb will shred our secondary, forcing Meriweather to replace Major Dissapointment by half time.

  • corey wootten will be back.
