Monday Night May Be True Preseason Test for Offensive Line

Monday Night May Be True Preseason Test for Offensive Line

The Giants may be taking a roundhouse kick from the New York media (and deservedly so) but they can't complain when they look at their depth chart at defensive end.  If there's another team in the league, wait, forget it.  There simply isn't another team in the league with three guys like Tuck, Umenyiori and Pierre-Paul on the edges.

That is why the Bears may consider their second preseason game more important than either their third or fourth - both of those coming against subpar defensive opponents in Tennessee and Cleveland.  The Bears understand their most glaring weakness is along the offensive line and also understand their most important task is developing that line into a cohesive unit by the time John Abraham & Friends arrive at Soldier Field on the eleventh of September.

They'll be presented with no better opportunity than Monday night.  They're back in the New Meadowlands, the Air Conditioner in the Swamp, where it all seemed to fall apart for the line a year ago.  They're back in the stadium that allowed Bears fans their first look at the great Todd Collins in 2010.  They'll also be on Monday Night Football, and based on the almost-ridiculous preseason ratings thus far, in front of a huge audience.  If the line falters triumphantly early, the criticism from the local media will spread to the national media quicker than an STD spread among the original Broadway cast of Hair.  If the edge blockers neutralize the Giants edge attack, hope and optimism will spring eternal from the murky depths of Mike Tice's post-practice bath water.

It is only preseason, of course.  Any errors made Monday night can surely be rectified in the three weeks until the real games start.  But Monday night can and should serve as the litmus test.  Who's ready?  Who's not?  Who needs help?  Who's helpless?  If Tice is having trouble figuring that out in practice, he'll get proper assistance from Tuck, Umenyiora and Pierre-Paul.

  • Firstishness....Hopefully Webb makes strides as large as his ass this week.

  • When in doubt, attack-attack-attack!

What Martz should do and what he will do are two unfortunatley different things. I think he should establish the run, but he is obstinate, and will try and establish the pass. He will end up 3rd and long, I would like to see us end up 3rd and short (this was a trouble spot last year that will get cleaned up with our additions). We need to attack their edges, but he will undoubtably end up in a situation which will allow their edges to attack us. Punch or get punched? Which do you prefer, OC?

  • ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh .....Glitchy....I know you have a hard-on for the D but don't do it;;;; PPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEAAASSSEE Don't

  • for you blogfader:

Let Martzy "let the sunshine in" for O

    Is Tice sign an Aquarius?

LDL looking for "Hair beautiful Hair"

and last but not least "GLitchy" signing about signing Maybin ..
    "Easy to be Hard"

  • I just hope Cutler doesn't die. If the Bears can get out with Cutler still alive and able to play then it will be a moral victory.

  • In reply to Perno:

I propose Cutty is slotted to be the 3rd string QB that night. Just sayin.

  • In reply to Perno:

I have a solution for keeping Cutler alive:

he should throw one less pass than the 1st preseason game.

What's that you say? That Cutler only threw one pass? Exactly.

What is the Pee-Wee Herman word of the pre-season? "Falter" . Who will falter? Lance Louis, Garza, Williams, Webb?

And who will be inserted in the 3rd game? Spencer, Edwin Williams? hmmmm

Also, a rare grammatical kudos to Jeff for putting an "an" in front of "STD" - so often do I see "a STD" (setting it up on the tee...)

  • My only suggestion is that the Paramedics keep their engines running and that they bring plenty of stretcher's just in case.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

And by engines, you mean turbines in the medivac chopper. Because when they scrape him off the turf, seconds will count,

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Painfully funny gp.

  • No knock on Chester but here's another reason to suggest the Bears paid too much for him last year. I can't remember a year where so many decent FA running backs like Lendale White were available on the cheap.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/16/broncos-cut-lendale-white/

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Lendale White is a huge sack of shit.

  • Maybe now but he helped me win a couple of leagues 2 years ago.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

His numbers couldn't be any worse than Chesters since he came to da Bears.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Chester is a bigger sack of shit, i'm convinced he's going to be gone in favor of khalil

  • Well, Peppers worked out for us. 1 out of 3 isn't bad?

  • I saw an article that Pierre-Paul was a monster in camp. Scary. Just what the Giants need.

As for Maybin. COME ON! The guy showed up at camp at 6'3", 225! Something like 20-25lbs under his Penn State weight. He doesn't want to play football, he rather flip burgers or go work at the Penn State custodial services division.

Maybin. Holy shit. They called him Maybe. As in, maybe we all ought to go kick Maranelli in the head.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Hell, if he has half a brain, or someone else watching his finances, flipping burgers will hardly be necessary. He was a #11 pick, which means he earned a few million already.

  • If the line falters triumphantly early...

2011 Season has it's theme: Falter not thy Ticemen!

We are going to have to schedule a meet up time cause my time on the network is going to be so sporadic. Pick a day/time and I'll get on and we’ll hook up. Let me know.

haha. I am a life coach after all....

  • I expect to see a lot of double TE sets in the 1st quarter against the Giants.

We have Spaeth the dropper, Davis and this new kid Smith, undrafted and already twice the man that Manofmoolah was. 267 and a seal block beast. Erik Kramer was in love with the guy.

Oh, and Blogfather - why the hate for Eddie Williams? I thought he was good.

  • I still have nightares about last years game against the Giants. I'm hoping Jay can get back up on that horse and build some confidence in his O-line as they give up zero sacks in the 1st quarter. Jay comes out and the oline can do what they like after that.... just give Jay one solid quarter of blocking fellas!

  • Look to see pass plays being called on 1st downs and run plays on rd and 20.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Look to see pass plays being called on1st downs and run plays on 3rd and 20.

  • Totally agree Sac. That Giants game last year still gives me boner shock bronie.

  • So, how was Hell in the off season for you losers? I know I promised to never visit this shit hole blog again, but I figured I had to let you in on this. I went down to the shrine while the boys were visiting your president. That would be the one and only Packer Hall of Fame in the World Champions Lambeau Field surroundings. And I wanted to let you know how absolutely beautiful that Halas trophy looks on display. It's kind of in a place of honor all by itself. What a kick to be able to have it be only inches away from actually being able to touch it. You must have had a similar feeling only I didn't gnash my teeth and cry when I was that close.

  • F*ckin cheesedick limburgers. When Rodgers head gets ripped off by our D put that in a case....

  • I agree, this Mondays game against the NYG's could tell us a lot. However, the Gints looked pretty sluggish against Carolina last week. So we cannot know for sure which NYG team will show up. This was the case last year, and I'm expecting the same this year. Sage Rosenfels was NY's top passer last week, therefore I'm expecting another great game for our defense.

  • On a Fantasy Football note, Chris Johnson wants to be one of the highest paid players. No, not highest paid running back, highest paid PLAYERS.

    Ruh-Roh.

I think he's drawing a line in the sand for ALL rbs everywhere. He knows their shelf life is about 3 years, and then are summarily discarded like a broken blade.

  • Also, I'm surprised no has brought up Cutler's diabetic night shits.

This will be a true test not just for the Oline, but for his night curse. I hope they play the entire 1st quarter - trial by fire.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

4E85.....Hopefully with the trim Cutty this will change..if not as GP has said before "Get That Bitch A Snickers" hell tie it to his facemask.

  • Martzy it's shit like this that makes me want drive 24 hours and beat your ass like a pinata:

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Mike-Martz-adds-some-quarterback-drama-to-Bears-camp.html

  • In reply to lobotobear:

btw..and the Todd Collins was a fu%$$%@!#$ing mastermind plan...you dipshit.

  • In reply to lobotobear:

The Bears have a real talent for alienating guys on offense. They did it to Shaba, did it Hanie last year, did it to Olsen apparently, did it to Orton too, and Bennett sat his entire rookie year before they realized maybe he should get some snaps.

If I was Caleb Hanie I would show up to work every day and put in the effort on the field. Not because I want to impress these guys, but because I want to impress Miami, Seattle or one of these other cities in need of a new starter next year. Its not like our O-line makes QB a cushy job on this team.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

The truth of the matter is that Hanie needs a handful or more starts under his belt for any team to even sniff in his direction. He is a hostage to what the Bears tell him to do until he's no longer under contract.

  • You PS3 guys should try the Madden 12 demo from PSN. It's Bears vs. Packers. I had a blast with Izzy spiking Rodgers head into the ground several times on the Blitz. The opening now has the big Bear infatable and the players run out, they just introduce Pep and Lack and Lovie, who appears to have morphed into the planet of the Apes Caesar.

The gameplay is faster now, the engine was optimized and the framerate is back to being v. fast. Slants are v. hard, but running the ball feels much better.

They still have Manofmoolah, Kreutz and Olsen on the O, and Manning at FS, but it will get roster updates when the full game comes out. Meanwhile it's fun to run for your life as Cutty, as Webb sucks in this game as well.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Madden has been one of my all time faves, more for playing against friends in the room than the prodigys online. But I have to say, the commerical showing the Lovie and the Bears getting punked by the NFC pro-bowlers has turned me off a tad, but I'll get over it I guess.

Have to say. I thought Minny should have drafted this guy so he could sit behind Favre for a season. He would have learned a ton from Brett, would have gotten to play the last couple of games of the season, and would have been in a great position to start this year. Also would have made me a heck of lot more worried about the Vikes for the next 5 years at least.

Chilli was our double agent and is no longer with the Queens to sabotage their moves. Give Frazier time. The day will come when we wish Chilli is still their HC.

  • For anyone that missed Our Boy roy's breakdown of the first half of the Bills' game :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgMEZhkfwwY

    His best work so far.

If you missed the Spencer breakdown, and if you think this guy should be our starting center then watch this vid and come back and tell us what you think :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYXxqTvzD6E

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

I don't need to Irish cause I watched the game a couple of times. I mostly remember spencer not knowing who to block or blocking the wrong guy.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Roy apparently has problems with reading depth cues, as Urlacher was almost a yard to Spencer's right. "Continuing his momentum" from the brush block would have put Spencer on nothing but air.

Not to say I'm high on Spencer, but that analysis at around 7:30 is just a crock of shit.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Spencer has an entire playbook to learn. I give him a pass as long as he's on the bench for now. Give him some time to settle in. The problem with bringing on a new center is that he needs to earn the trust of the Oline and it would be a huge mistake to put him into the starting lineup before he has done that.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Agreed - I don't like Louis being in there, but if Spencer isn't ready, he isn't ready. If it was a different off-season, I don't think I'd give him the same kind of pass.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

That's true, but that's still (likely) his responsibility. His job on that play is to make a combo block and move up to the next level -- from what I understand, he has to keep his eye on his guy so that he can make a proper release off the combo block.

I'm not an expert but his technique (on that play at least) didn't seem very good. That could just be coaching though...

Put him in Bellacheats system and just mabye he might be able to make that argument but until he wins 2 more rings, NO WAY. Me thinks his pedigree has clouded his judgement.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Eli may be in Brady's class, but he's in the front of the room writing "I will not throw that pass again. I will not throw that pass again." 1000 times on the chalkboard.

  • you said the exact same thing last year you vikings lover hack POS... from our good friend and staunch bears supporter Don Banks:

    • Loser -- Maybe Olin Kreutz was the lucky one. He got out. The Bears beleaguered offensive line is even more suspect than we thought, with Chicago quarterbacks absorbing an astounding nine sacks in a 10-3 win over visiting Buffalo on Saturday night. When the Bills defense pulls a jail break on you, you have issues. The Bears O-line wasn't to blame for all nine sacks, but it looks like Mike Tice is going to earn his coaching salary again this season, with his unit immediately placed under the microscope in 2011.

  • Say what you will about Angelo's blunders over the years but one things for sure, Nellie has really helped the Bears entice players to want to play under him in the Bears system. MB, very shrewd move wouldn't you say?

ever heard the saying, "It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that ring" Trac?

And that's fine, there's a difference between a nice guy that people like and someone who's an ass kicker and name taker. I don't like lovie's style, but I believe he'd be able to do more if we didn't have a mental midget running the team. We’ll never know, but I’ve come to the conclusion over the last 2 years that I’d much rather keep lovie than Angelo.

  • Amen brother! But after the Bears win the SB this year Angelo will have a job for life and will frustrate every Bears fan until the day he dies.
On that note one more week till I head to Reno and lay money on the Bears to win it all at 28x1. Thinking odds to win the NFC North are baout 17X1 so I'll have to lay something out on that one too.

  • Jeez, 17:1 to win the division? That can't be right -- if so, take that in a heartbeat. I assume you must have meant the NFC...
