Bears Survive Second Meaningless Game Injury Free

Bears Survive Second Meaningless Game Injury Free

Okay, so, here's the thing.  Don't lose real players in the preseason.  It's stupid.  Play your team for minimal minutes and get them into the locker room safe.  For those of you crazy enough to think this result tonight means anything, ask yourself this: would the Giants rather have won a lopsided victory or kept Terrell Thomas for 2011?

Here are my overall thoughts:

  • I was impressed with the edge offensive line and I'm starting to think Gabe Carimi might be the best first-round draft pick of Jerry Angelo's career.  He went one-on-one with Justin Tuck all night and didn't lose.  Once.
  • Tim Jennings.  I'm buying in.
  • Roy Williams, here's the thing.  You have to catch the ball.  I've read all the pieces about your conditioning but you have to make catches when the ball's in your hands.  And if you plan on being a "#1" type receiver, even when it's not in your hands.  Looked to me, tonight, like our #1 receiver might be Devin Hester.
  • But if that's the case, he should never be catching the comeback route on the goal line.  I mean, he's still Devin Hester.
  • The screen game.  Going to be amazing this year.
  • Either Chester Taylor is not be given a chance to make the team or he's so safe he doesn't have to make the team.
  • Because Marion Barber is making the team.
  • Has Johnny Knox really fallen so far as to be playing in the fourth quarter?  What did I miss?
  • Vernon Gholston.  You're not getting plowed over in third quarter of preseason games and making the Bears defensive line.
  • "Major Wright made a major mistake" - my buddy Brian Bonselaar on the Brandon Jacobs TD run.
  • You know what the Chicago Bears are without Lance Briggs?  Not the Chicago Bears.
  • Cutler can do every single thing a great quarterback does.  He just needs a few seconds to do it.
  • Nice to see Nathan Enderle take the night off.
  • Was it me or did Julius Peppers seem to beat his man on every snap?

You?

stunning observation mainge, i agree wholeheartedly!

  • 1. screen game is going to be sick. There were several times that Cutler did a great job of letting the play develop before dumping the ball off and it was beautiful.
    2. Sanzenbacher is making this team. That kid is a player.
    3. Paea got his teeth kicked in tonight.....vs 3rd and 4th stringers.
    4. Briggs please come back soon. Pisa please heal fast and take #59 from nameless faceless white rookie linebacker who won't be in league ever again.
    5. Adams missed, Okoye will push for more time. Melton showed signs but was inconsistent on the run.
    6. Kyle Adams looked good, Spaeth sighting, Dez meh,
    7. Onrea Jones trying to be all Shabba.
    8. Hanie throws a pussy ball.
    9. Forte and Barber are going to be a sick combo this year.
    10. Carimi impressed. Webb didn't make me want to vomit. Spencer decent. Chris Williams even played decently.
    11. DJ Moore gets pushed around on run plays like a younger brother trying to play with the older kids. Decent on pass.
    12. Cutler looked sharp and would have had extremely solid numbers if Hester and Williams decided to come to play AT ALL.
    13. Knox needs to be given more chances because there is no reason to not play him as long as he is healthy. He makes plays and we don't have to ignore him even thought i'd like to see Williams step up and Bennett continue to play solid.
    14. Toub, tighten it the fuck up mang.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    8. - Where do I find one of these Pussy Balls?

  • Pattaya beachfront, Coach. about three feet below the adam's apple.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    Ha! Good one, Irish

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    5. That's what worried me when they said he'd put on 30lbs. Melton's main thing last year was his motor, his heat-seeking-missile pursuit of the ball. Now he's just another fat bastard that can't run.

    13. I'd say Knox has been given more than his fair share of chances? Sanzenweinklammer got his tonight, let's see more of Onion Jones, Horny Fantuz and Sam Turd next week, and less of the 'starters'. Where were our fullbacks today - did they let them out of their kennels? Were they sighted? Eddie Williams is 245 lbs - was he even blocking on the goal-line?

XX. Pushing the twins along the beachfront in their stroller, on the way back from their first birthday party, I must have passed literally a thousand hookers - many hundreds anyway. Water, water, everywhere and n'ere a drop to drink. Gee Bert, I'm thirsty. Boy, am I thirsty ....

  • As Captain Hadley said, after tossing Andy's cell, in in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION:

"Nothing here to get in a twist over."

There MAY be hope for this offensive line.

However, a POX on Mathias Kiwanuka for his "3-steps-after-the-ball-was-long-gone clothesline, cheap shot, late hit, in an exhibition game" on Cutler.

I hope your achillies tendon snaps and rolls up your sorry ass tomorrow, Mathias!

I'm surprised Tice didn't order Mr. K chop-blocked and crippled on the next play.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Totally agree about Kia-Fuckhead. It will be interesting to see if he gets fined. He should. I also saw the Giants diving at Cutler's knees a couple of times. I felt bad for the Giants CB but karma's a bitch.

  • ALSO...

Congratulations, Aaron Pryor, and don't forget to pack a FLAK JACKET !

This pick was JUST IN CASE anybody out there had any doubts (hopes?) that Al "Dead Man Walking" Davis was not still calling the shots. Sorry 'bout that, Raider Nation.

  • Not going to cry about it because it was a meaningless game but were the refs all from NY? I saw Peppers get held at least 3 times. It was obvious and out in the open. Also, on one of those long 3rd down conversions (ugh) the WR never got set. He was still moving when the ball was snapped.

  • I thought the OL was OK and gives me some hope for optimism. Chester looks like last year's Chester (not good). K. Bell came back to earth. Roy W. sucks Moose Wang. Not only is he not running hard, he can't catch and didn't block. Forte would have scored on that screen if Cheapo would have blocked Tuck. Hanie isn't giving me a chubby. Other than Peppers the DL didn't look great. ST's were awful. None of this means anything but they have plenty to work on in practice.

On the good side, Cutler's mechanics look night and day better than the last 2 years.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    who is Cheapo?

  • In reply to Michael L:

That asshole Roy W. When that douchebag was with the Lions I read an article about him. Not only is he a cheap fucker, he's proud of it. He was bragging about not tipping the pizza delivery driver or tipping when he goes out. I've worked a few jobs where you depended on tips and that just pisses me off to no end.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Isn't it the law to tip in the states? Why are people's tips inversely proportional to the amount of money they earn?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

I don't think it's the law in the US but ... I know tips shouldn't be expected, they should be earned but to stiff pizza delivery drivers and wait staff when you're a multi-millionaire is beyond bad form. Then he has the balls to brag about it.

I've disliked this asshole for years and was really bummed when we signed him. If he has a good year I'll be happy. If not, I'm really going to have a hate on for the worthless piece of shit.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Great Nick-Name Canada! "Cheapo" definitely should stick. Not just for his non-tipping ways, but "cheap" is all He's worth....
I also agree that servers should always be tipped, and my wife & I tip well.

  • Dear Roy Williams,

You still suck. I like how you do a first down signal and then the refs overturn the call because you in fact, didnt catch it. And that wasn't the only drop.

Learn how to catch or get the hell off the field.

    Love,
    Max

  • I only saw the first two Bears' drives. Any Sam Hurd sightings? Fantuz? How did Webb look in pass pro?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

I didn't notice Hurd all night but that's not surprising, I guess. Fantuz showed up sometime in the 4th.
Hanie showed an affection for Onrea Jones, to say the least. He's a "local" boy down here in Hampton Roads. He showed some athleticism but he's also more than likely PS material again.
Hammacherschlemmer got alot of run, made some nice catches, got some opportunities at returner and pissed off Jay by going for extra yards instead of going out of bounds with 30 secs to go in the half.
Roy Williams was shit. I thought i was being overly critical of him by predicting one catch max - that was overly optimistic. And he threw in a complete non-effort of a block on what should've been a Forte TD run.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Irish, can you please just give up on Fantuz already? The guy sucks a bag of dicks and 100% he's going to get cut from this team and be back in the canadian league. Thank you.

  • I don't know anything about Fantuz- his height was giving me a semi ....

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Fantuz caught 1 pass for a short gain in the 2nd half.

  • Ok on them doing some good things...AND no injuries to boot. But 3 times at the goal line and to get stuffed all 3 times..totally unexceptable.

  • We let them run 218 yards all over us? We have two LBs worth a damn, and if half of them go down in the off-season we are double fkd.

  • David Carr, 9/11, 84 YDS, 2 TD.

Is this the vanilla defense excuse again? I hope so.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

That's the "who the hell is that wearing 58?" excuse...who cares what numbers Carr put up.
And 99 of those rushing yards were one play against future practice squad or soon-to-be-cut guys on D.

  • I'm sure someone has brought this up on the last thread. They gave Marion Barber the ball like 12 plays in a row?!??! They are trying to get him killed before game 1. Makes no sense when Bell only had like 2-3 carries all game.

  • Knox as a trade bait? Anyone think that's still a good idea?

And Dom Deluise, nice job on ST. Your taxi is waiting.

Asiata and Williams - you two are the suck.

Webb and Carimi - nice job, guys...although I think Webb picked up a penalty that sure looked like Gabe jumping. That was extremely impressive work against that Giants DE rotation.

That replay of Thomas getting leg-whipped in the knee? Owwwww. Didn't see it the first time, didn't want to see it the 3rd and 4th times.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Didn't watch the game, but looking at the stats I see one sack. Even if that was directly Webb or Carimi's fault, that's a good outing. I am now worried about the interior, but fortunately that's a lot cheaper to address in FA or the draft.

Knox will not get us much as trade bait. The guy caught just shy of 1000 yards last year and is a great #2 on returns. I'd keep him and talk to Martz about playing him at flanker.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I think we'd be bonkers to trade him. RW is a fraud.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Sure looks that way.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

That sack rests on Jay's shoulders. He was outside the tackles and could have/should have thrown the ball away.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Asiata as lead blocker at the goal line - my wife says, "Shouldn't that guy be hitting someone?"

  • In reply to Jokey:

Asiata blows, if he even touches that guy Barber scores.

  • Highlight of the evening:
letting the game get ahead a little on the DVR, I'm playing tea time with my 2-year old. She turns to me and goes, "Daddy, let's go watch da Bears".
She got distracted about ten minutes in and went to go help sweep the kitchen.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Cute.

  • No surprise here, but I'm happy because I still pull for the guy.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-broncosquarterbacks

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    +1

  • That's awesome. 2 years old and wants to watch the Bears. 10 minutes is pretty good, you got a keeper there.

  • "Roy Williams still needs to step up. He signaled a first down after the first ball was thrown his way only to find out via replay challenge that he dropped the pass."
    That's our boy.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

We shoulda signed Plax. Once again, Jerry failed in his risk/talent evaluation when signing this turkey(Roy). Plax would have given us the ability to be a top 10 offense overnight because of what he would have added to our offense. The dude's(plax) super talented, he's hungry and has a chip on his shoulder. Pay attention Angelo, that equals success in the NFL.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Plax will be hurt by week 2 and the Jets will be wishing they didn't get rid of ghetto ass Braylan Edwards

  • Coach, if I were a betting man I'd take that bet. Mark my words, Plax will flat out shine this year. I've never been a plax supporter but all the factors I listed above will come into play this year. You can't honestly tell me you would have signed Williams of Plax if you were GM.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

I can honestly tell you that I would have never signed Williams....

    Period.

I would have given Plax serious considerations.

ergo, I would have signed Plax over Williams.

  • In reply to Doc Nitty 34:

    I believe you Doc.

  • Mike Tirico, "Can someone pick up Major Wright's jock?"
DBB bloggers: "Not without some bungee cords and a permit."

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    ha!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

On that play, Wright thought he was playing college ball all the way. Wake up son, you're in the pro's now.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    Ha!

  • Well, so we went into this game worried about pass protection, red-zone production and the new punter.

Now we are a little more secure with the pass protection but we seem to have sudden problems stopping the run, covering kickoffs, kicking field goals, and we still can't produce in the red zone or punt the ball over 40 yards. Awesome.

  • Carmini better be the best OT we ever got, even if we pissed in John Harbaugh's wheaties along the way.

Because the rest of this draft class is a bust. Pringles was a 3rd rounder and he's starting, Conte shouldn't even make the team. He's worse than broken down Adam Archuleta. So slow. Steltz made some tackles out there, that fucker is all heart. Overall, Starsky and Hutch made me pray for Chris Harris to stay healthy, and I don't like Harris.

Is Mays still out there? Why isn't Forte's deal done so we know what we can spend? Damn Angelo.

  • Bears 3.1 yards per carry.
    Giants 8.1 yards per carry.

    Ouch.

Special Teams weren't very special. I know that Taub is interchanging personnel to get a good look at the talent pool, but it pains me to see our strenght turned into a liability.

I'm not concerned with situational stuff (goal line/ 3rd and short). There are only sooo many plays we have in the arsenal, so it makes little sense to give Atlanta any inclination of what we can and can't do.

Major Wright was out of position all game long. Overthinking????

As a rule, I detest showboating under any circumstance, but I especially hate first down dances on a dropped ball. It is a character flaw, Curtis Enis type shit. Most importantly, it is correctable. I wish someone would get in his ear and tell him that there have been several men in his position who have done much better and yet remained humble to make this their profession.

Cohesion, cohesion, cohesion. This o-line will be leaps and bounds ahead of our o-line last year if they keep playing together.

    GO VOTE FOR DaBLOGFATHER!!!

  • In reply to Viva:

That bullshit by Roy W. has been his M.O. for the last 3 years. If it's correctable, he's a really slow learner. Totally agree on the rest of your post.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Martz thought he was getting the Roy Williams he had fresh out of college. You know, the young, in shape Roy Williams that was hungry to establish himself as a solid WR 5 plus years ago. Instead, Martz got an out of shape, lazy wide receiver that Jerra Jones spoiled by paying him way too much money. Roy got rewarded for under performing so why should anyone think all of a sudden he'll start to work his ass off for peanuts when he still has a lotta mullah in the bank and he's only hungry for cheeseburgers? It's becoming obvious to me that Martz sucks as a talent evaluator. The only thing he has going for him is Barber and even that move will take time to establish itself as a good one. I could be wrong about Roy but I doubt it. Why would a receiver come to a city where WR's go to die if he is all that? Nope, I think he was probably given the best deal by the Bears so he took it.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

And evidently, he won't be spending too much of all the dough on tips either...

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    BOO-YAH!

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

The only hope I have for Roy is Martz. Unfortunately, I have very little trust with Martz. Ouch.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

That's Martz whole problem... He still lives in yester-year.

  • Again, I cannot believe the Bears staff okay'd the kickoff change rule when the NFL called. It will be changed back in a year or two. But, this will be the death of us. Get used to our returners taking it back from 7 yards deep in the end zone, getting to the 20 and considering that a good return. Our best phase has been eliminated by the league.

  • In reply to Crown:

I have confidence in Toub's ability to out coach his opponenet, but you can't outcoach a kick out of the endzone. This rule change does hurt. Didn't know that the club was on board with the change.

  • In reply to Crown:

Yeah. If that's true, their incompetence can no longer be denied by any rational thinking human.

  • Taylor Mays traded to the Bengals, no loss IMO

  • In reply to #76 Mongo Murph:

MB seems to have broken with his tradition Murph. MB? Anything?

  • Who loves Peppers?

I have two jerseys and I wouldn't change it.

    Peppers and Urlacher.

Did anyone just think that Roy might have shifted some of the coverage to his side? I heard that on the tv, thought it was valid but doesn't explain his drop.

Hester and Bennent will be Cutler's fav targets. Which I hope we can block because out tightends looked very puny and so did Roy.

Knox will be back in the lineup soon. We will not trade him but I think the front office has been tired of him giving up slants that become picks for Jay. At least Roy got his body in front of him.

Did I metion how awesome Pepper's is? Why can't we get someone up the middle or across from him to play just a little close to his level?

I watched Pea and Melt... they looked horrible last night. Down right horrible.

  • In reply to Artoo:

At this point, I'd be happy if they shifted coverage to his side all year. At least he would have some value then.

  • Wow, Miami really is for old people.

Dolphin backs in camp now include:

    Tiki Barber
    Clinton Portis
    Larry Johnson
    Reggie Bush
    Lex Hilliard

Bush isn't old, just washed up. He probably didn't even get to wash Kardashian get married on tv. Ouch.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Jebus - is J-Lo the GM?

So I'm hearing ....(didn't see the game)

..... no love for RW, and it doesn't even sound like a conditioning problem?

    ..... shockingly ... Webb wasn't shockingly bad?

..... Muscles Paella is as advertised ... ho for show ?

    ..... fatty Melton melted ?

    ..... our 'top 3' receivers aren't so top ?

    I'm not hearing ....

... how the anchor of our O-line played ? Olin Garza - yay or nay?

    ...old man Urlacher ? Kosher?

.... safeties? Not so safe ?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

The OL wasn't too bad. Although we still can't punch it in from in close. Fuck! Muscles and Melt were no-shows last night. Earl looked good last night. Devin ran himself out of bounds on the 37-yard bomb. If he made a quick cut to the inside it would have been six. Also, he slipped on a sure TD from around the 3-4 yd line. Then followed it up with a drop at the goal line with a DB all over him. It would have been a tough catch but ...

All of the OL looked OK last night (1st string only). Not great but the pass protection was decent. A few pressures and a sack on Cutler where he could have thrown it away.

#54 looked like a guy getting ready to play some ball in about 3 weeks. No worries there. We missed Briggs and Adams last night.

Graham got beat a few times. ST's or nickle/dime back for him. Peanut looked good and Jennings is good for a 5'8" CB.

Wright was playing out of control last night and looked bad. Conte was there to clean up, 30-yds down the field (Ugh). Steltz does the most with the least.

    ST's were awful.

I was gone for about 12 days on a bike ride in Idaho. I think I read where your Dad passed. Sorry to hear that. No matter what the age of your parents, or their health, it always really hurts when they pass. Hang in there, my man.

And stay away from the girls with something extra!

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

...yes on the oline, this game. Pass blocking decent, run blocking not nearly as good as last game.
    ....yes on the hurt locker
....no on the safeties... but I think they'll get better

  • In reply to gpldan:

I heard the perfect description of her the other day. A real-life blowup doll. It makes me laugh every time I see her with her yap always hanging open trying to be sexy,

  • I'm going to fight the urge to drop diareah all over Roy E after his first dropped pass, but man that was awfull. Brought me right back to the Moose droppings days. Maybe he'll come to play once the regular season comes around, but something tells me he's a sack of shit. Something about that fucking 1st down thing just irks me to no end.

Payaya might be an un needed shit sack as a 2nd rounder. What the fuck were we thinking not grabbing another o line guy? I guess we didn't expect to get a guy like Okoya as a free agent. But man, he looks like a piece of dogshit. He should probably go find the pool jumping guy, and the two of them can bench press and jump out of pools for money. Cause they both suck dicks at football.

  • I'm not going to write off the bench presser just yet. He was non-existent last night. As for Roy, anytime there is a reference to Moose Droppings, that ain't good.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    Non-existent?

He was PANCAKED!!!! THREE times. As in, driven off his legs onto his ass and flat on his back.

Nobody gets pancaked in the NFL. I haven't seen a guy driven onto his ass like that in years.

  • Major +1 Coach, on the Williams rant. Fuck that guy. Cut him and let Sanzhammershlonger have a role. Fuck him in the face.

I hold out hope for Paea.

  • Wow, everyones whistling the same tune they did last preseason. I call bullshit, this is fucking preseason. As Jeff pointed out- we won, no injuries, no key defensive starter out for the season, we fucking win.

I don't think RW will be some all-pro, but I also don't think we can write him off based on a PRESEASON game(although I'm not at all a fan of his stupid little non-1st down dance). Unfortunately the same can be said for our OL, not sure they're going to look like that all year, these things go both ways.

This just wreaks of last preseason when the sky was falling. I'm not in the biz of predictions, but I do believe that this team is better than last years', mostly at RB, WR, OL, and TE. I think our D is slightly improved over last year just based off those improvements to the O and hopefully spending less time on the field, hence, less injuries and fatigue.

But that's just me. I'm no expert. None of us know shit about this squad until the real games start, and we'll know a whole lot by the end of week 3. I think we'll be lucky to be 1-2 by then and everyone will be shitting a brick around here. But the season will be young and da bearsss will win some fucking games. Amen. Good night

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

I agree with most of your post Ben but I'm not sure about being better at TE. Kellen dropped a pass last night and his blocking reminded me of Girly Thor. Heck, I'm not even sure we're better at WR. The Barbarian is a huge upgrade over the Molester and the OL looked pretty good last night.

  • In reply to ben in norcal:

Recalling at least the first half of last season, the sky did fall ... all over the o-line and our crappy receivers. Without a center I don't know how our line can be better, we've certainly got a good right tackle .... nobody has mentioned Garza yet - how did he look? I guess one sack tells a tale.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

And the one sack was Jay not throwing the ball away after he had plenty of time and was outside the tackles...that was all Cutty.

  • My take gents:

    • Like all of you, RW looked like a slow, lazy-assed, no class, unchicago spoiled brat last night. I want to give the guy one reg season game to show he wants to and can play. I’m hoping to jesus that he’s just being a prima donna and thinking he doesn’t have to go hard in the prese… wait… Fuck. Should have gotten Plax, or Stallworth, or Edwards, or the 5 other guys we could have picked up for a ham samich and a coke. Oh, yeah... and Marshall!!!

    • Hold onto your hats gents… I was impressed by the oline last night. One out of pocket coverage sack that should have been a Jay throw away… against the Giants dline? Nice work. I mean, it’s not like they were Indy over the last 3 years, but they at least didn’t get Jay killed. If they can play like that all year, we’ll be able to do some good things and Jay should be ok.

Since I was focusing on the oline play I did notice that L.Louis is a slow mofo man. He pulled on a couple pitches/of tackle runs and he basically got left behind and didn’t block anyone that was anywhere near the play still. Our run blocking, as Viva enumerated, was pretty bad against a very good line this week. Let’s see how things solidify, but I hope we can find our footing in the reg season there too. Although if I had to pick one, I’d much rather have one sack a game and a 3.1 running average than 5-9 sacks a game and our franchise out for the season. Besides, like you’ve all said, if Martz can keep it in his pants, our screen short roll-pass game will destroy people.

    • Barber is a fucking bad ass. Dude just finds or makes holes on his own. Matty? Pay the man what he deserves… maybe not CJ money, but he deserves a whole lot more than $500k this year. I have to relent that Chester just can’t get through or find holes man. He always seems to get caught up in the shit at the line. I’ve always been luke warm on Bell, but maybe him over chester now. And who’s our fullback? Williams? Tofu? Ungabunga? Pick one and get him reps. I thought williams looked pretty good when he was in? Anyone?

    • The Pearl is by far and away our best pure receiver, wish he had more size/speed. He should be in there every pass play as a safety valve for jay. Hester needs to catch the ball, and Knox needs to be in there a lot more too. He was and is our best deep speed option on downfield plays. Just keep him out of the fucking middle and battling bigger corners for jump balls.

    • We really couldn’t have used Mays? Really? Fucking conte after watching this game is a WORSE version of the anti-plank missile. At least Steltz brings the fucking heat man, have to give it to the dude, he was around the call a lot. Not as our starting FS or SS, but as a backup I was impressed with his play. Conte was a total fucking waste in my mind, and as I was lamenting during the draft, we should have given up bench press, enderlender, and conte and our 4th and gotten Franklin in the second and Moffit in the 3rd. Hey Jerry, from now on when a guy is known more for his ‘athletic tricks’ off the field, stay the fuck away you dickhole.

    • Jay’s bacasana’s looking gooooood. Anyone notice that he pretty much shook off the night game bedshits? He didn't have a spectacular game, but he didn't look like his usual zombie night game self either. I attribute that to his cutting back on the red vines and pixie dust straws and actually getting in fucking shape so his diabeetees doesn't have as much an effect.

    • We need at least one corner over fucking 5’8” and 180 besides the nut for fuck sake. Someone’s gotta defend the back endzone corner fade, and it ain’t DJ moore/tim jennings/bowman.

    • Said it on the game thread and I’ll say it again, Toub better fucking step it up man. I know he's testing diff guys out , but... I hate to say it, but I think his time with us is about over. It’s like when you work at the same job for 3+ years… shit gets stale and you need a change to breathe new life into your game and be a super star again. Toub is there guys. Sorry. He’s still awesome, just not for us anymore.

    • Did I say that the oline did a great job of being a mediocre nfl oline last night (in pass protection at least). I was ecstatic.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

ball not call... oh, and Iwuh was pretty decent too.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Nice assessment methinks. Too bad we can't combine the strengths of our receivers into 1 or 2 badasses.

Conte reminded me of Archuleta but the entire 2nd half D (or as much I could stomach) looked like shit.

No idea what a bacansana is.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Totally agree. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Forte will get most of the carries and I hope never to see the Molester in a Bear uni again.

Don't agree about Toub. We've been top 5 in ST's the last few years. I'm cutting him a lot of slack. I hate to do this but you've got to give Lovie and JA credit for valuing that part of the game.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Wiping your butthole on Toub is not cool MB. Remember our specials sucked in the preseason last year too? Then we were awesome once the reg season rolled around? It's going to happen again this year. And, unless we can have some sort of Toub clone thats been working under him all these years, there is no fucking way we can let him walk.

While Hester did stumble and drop a ball on that one drive, he was open more than i can ever remember seeing him. I think he actually does take a step as a receiver this year and we all forget about how high expectations were for Roy E. Stonehand.

The Cutler Cannon was in full effect last night. That deep ball to hester and the deep ball to Bennet were things of beauty. Those are throws that very few qb's can make.

Does anyone think Graham can still play corner? he got worked by dominick fucking Hixon on a fade route, loser.

  • I wrote before that hoped that RW was grown up enough to act as a decoy so Hester could be in the Pro Bowl. Time will tell I suppose.

  • The only play that really sticks out in my mind was the one where the bears were driving late in the 1st quarter and on third down the Gianst show an all out blitz with 8 in the box. Jay REFUSED to go to chotgun and instead takes it from under center where he is forced to throw immediatley for a 2 yard gain. Why not check out to shotgun and have your receiver go up the seam for a TD? What the hell?

  • check out to shotgun??? what in theee hell are you talking about? You don't just check into shotgun in martz's offense as there are no audibles. Jay didn't refuse to go into shotgun. It's that there is not shifting to shotgun unless the call is specifcally for shotgun. Sooner or later fans and announcers have got to understand this.

    That is all Martz dude.

  • Cutler doesn't seem to do many audibles or change things around - what's up with that?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

He can't - Martz doesn't allow it. He has hot reads and that's it - that's what I've been hearing for the last couple of years. I think others can confirm.

  • Jeff,

How can you consider positives from these games as real indicators of regular season performance while you turn around and ignore the negatives, assuring yourself that they are meaningless exhibition games? So Carimi's strong performance means he's going to have success, but the special teams disasters will never show up again? Chicago's offensive line provided adequate pass protection against a superior defensive unit, but Chicago's defense and ST units surrendered 41 points because they were playing with a vanilla playbook?

Could you ever be convinced that the Bears aren't going anywhere this year?

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

common man... not from two preseason games!? That would be silly.

I did exactly that last year and look how it ended up. Not the picture perfect season, as you know, but a hell of a lot better than I ever imagined we'd be in the 0-4 preseason.

Give it till the end of Q1 and we should know if we'll contend or not... you know... like every other team in the nfl.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

I'll bite - because you can evaluate individual performance in the preseason, not unit performance.
One, the coaches are evaluating personnel, not playcalling.
Two, there is so much personnel variability because they are evaluating guys on an individual basis, that getting worked up about the unit as a whole is pointless.

  • In reply to thebigcheese:

Actually it's really simple. Special teams performance has very limited meaning in the preseason because the personnel is being changed play-by-play for evaluation purposes, and half the players won't even be on the roster come the regular season. Total points is likewise meaningless because defensive starters are pulled early or held out altogether, and as with ST the scrubs/prospects get heavy rotation in for evaluation purposes.

Really most of the preseason is not at all any "real indicator of regular season performance" as you suggest. About all you can look for is red flags or signs of improvement/comfort for individuals only -- i.e. signs that a particular player is or is not taking the next step in their development. So is Carimi showing he isn't overwhelmed by the pro game, for example. Or sometimes you can judge cohesiveness of a unit if they are fielded together as they will be in the regular season -- so starting O-line yes, but the first-team defense no (starters held out, and more pulled early).

Honestly most people (including here on this blog) read way too much into what they see in the pre-season. Jeff has about the right perspective though, and ignores almost all of it other than looking at specific players.

  • In reply to Michael L:

    Exactly.

  • Coach - I'm just calling it like I'm seein it maings. I wouldn't say our specials were all out awesome last year. They certainly had a pretty big part in us losing both of the GB games. They out specialed us in a big way.

I am hoping for the best, but I don't remember our specials giving up so much and giving back as little as they did last night. Maybe I'm just sticking with my ill-advised theory on this one, so let’s all hope I'm wrong.

Jokey - bacasana is from a lame commercial, but I like the word... no idea what it is either.

Sac - Do we have check downs like that? I thought Martz doesn't allow audibles or check downs? Just hot receivers, which he was forced to use.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

According to Football Outsiders, based on all four phases of special teams, the Bears had the best unit in the league last year. The Packers unfortunately won that battle at the end of last year.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

You're letting 1 or 2 games color your perception of the entire year. Sure they were big ones, but unfortunately you can't pick and choose which games are great/good/bad... especially on ST where the plays are few and randomness very high.

Thanks Fifth for the FO stat. My perception of last year's ST was that it was quite good -- definitely top 5 caliber. MB, I know you're down on Toub but seriously, please at least wait until the regular season to start ripping on him. Pre-season just isn't the time to do it, considering half the players running specials won't even be on the roster on opening day, and he's swapping out players play-by-play while evaluating guys. Also this year is especially meaningless because there was no offseason which is especially bad for ST considering the number of rookies and FAs...

  • Well then Martz is smokin crack and I would just blitz 8 guys every third down if i was facing him.

  • Ah!! THAT explains it!

  • Which would work all of once or twice before Martz knew that's what you were going to do and dial up a play designed to beat the blitz bad.

Also not every offensive play handles the blitz in the same way. Depending on the design, it may rotate protection to put the free runner away from the primary reads, or it may designate a hot receiver or two, or it may just bootleg out and look for a free man (3 defenders on 3 receivers). Just because you force the ball to come out quick does not mean you will also get a quick stop. If Martz does his homework, he'd pick plays that attack weak spots in the blitz calls a DC likes to dial up.

A DC using that strategy would probably get scorched badly. Did you notice that even Rex Ryan last year, with his shutdown secondary and free-wheelin' blitzing ways, did NOT 8 man blitz Martz every 3rd down? I know you were mostly joking, but still...

  • MB-

Toub's time here is not over. He needs to evaluate talent just like everyone else. There has not been a more innovative and successful member of our coaching staff that I recall since Buddy. New rules = new tactics. He is in refining mode. I have know doubt.

  • In reply to Viva:

    or no doubt.

  • In reply to Viva:

Glad to hear that viva my man... just been seeing a decline over the last few years. I'm hoping you're right and I'm wrong.

  • Angelo-speak post-game: "We need to look at some Linebackers who can play special teams for us, yes."

Translation: Dom Deluise, get the fuck out of my sight.

Dom Deluise on his whiff: "He was holding me up, so I moved to run, but he was coming that time. I hurt my team."

You think? You think you hurt your team? Yes, Dommy, you hurt your fucking team.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Glad he did it in preseason, if there's a silver lining.

  • In reply to gpldan:

McGlover and Wilson, paging Darrell McGlover and Rod Wilson in bath fixtures and plumbing. Jerry Angelo is on the phone and says he needs advice on his "drainage problem"????

  • In reply to gpldan:

Fuck dude, he's a rookie and it's preseason.

  • Other guys besides Paea who have killed at the combine bench press:

Mitch Petrus (2010), Leif Larsen (2000), Mike Kudla (2006), Jeff Owens (2010), Brodrick Bunkley (2006), Scott Young (2005), Tank Tyler (2007) and Isaac Sopoaga (2004).

Not a starter in the whole lot.

Hmmm, Butter went soft when his knee gave way. Never the same.

I guess Paea can use that upper body strength to push the OL off him that just PANCAKED him.

I need a nickname for him. Pea Pancake. What's a pea pancake? Indian food? Naan?

Flatbread. That is Paea's new name. Flatbread.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Meniscus Flatbread.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    mmmmm... naaaaan.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    I like the thought train.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Tank Tyler's on the Bears roster. He whiffed on the 97 yard TD run.

  • I'm so pissed that Angelo didn't read his reports on Paea and his knee, it's Chris Williams year one syndrome - god dammit

I am calming myself down by watching Kyle Turley rip a Jet in half

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXEjXVmnAv4

  • In reply to gpldan:

That;s a little harsh gp. The guy has practically no experience but butt loads of talent and potential. He's gonna take at least a year to develop.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    Rickenbacker has potential.

A 2nd rounder should not look like a project. Zorich was taken in like the 5th round and looked better.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I'll reserve judgement for now on Paea. Even Raji, a top 10 pick, didn't do much his first year. I did just watch the 2nd half, and he didn't look good.
Conte also looked like he was afraid to hit someone. He showed no aggressiveness.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    "no football instinct" - Mayock

and Trac... dude was a 2nd rounder man. Don't know, but you go that high, you're supposed to be able to make an instant impact.... but not for the other team. It's only one game, so hopefully he'll get better, but it was a pretty piss poor first showing.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I don't think the guy won't be able to make an impact. Just saying that it will take some time to develop. This kid has a lot of upside. I think he only started playing football a couple of years ago. He probably would have gone in the 3rd round if the Bears hadn't taken him where they did. Look how long it took for D. Manning to coach up. Just sayin.

  • Anyone see Marcus Harrison last night? I think I saw him in on one play. He's gotta be done and done. His ass is as wide as my carbon cockprint.

  • In reply to Crown:

That may be my fantasy football team name Crown. Carbon Cockprint. Love it!

  • Oh Jebus, you guys are killing me today.

  • In reply to Crown:

For a third time on this thread, HA! Fucking hilarious.

  • 1. What happened to Robbie? Does the holder make that much difference? Is he going to go Ray Finkle on us?

    2. I think Chester's only getting plays so that we can dump him for a 5th rd pick. Sadly, I think he was worth more BEFORE preseason started. Guy cannot find a hole.

    3. Knox will stick around. He'll be starting again right around the time Roy makes his Aromashodu-season-ending drop in the endzone Week 1. Though, considering he's Martz's BFF - He likely gets 10-15 freebies before feeling the wrath of the pine.

    4. Fullback? We have a fullback?

    5. I think JC shed 15 lbs of granulated sugar and realized he no longer had to be relegated to the Kris Humphries/Reggie Bush status of banging 2 bit reality stars. Look for him to be deep dicking some tennis star right after the pro bowl.

    6. Pep = Rodgers dead.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

I think Robbie will be okay. He did miss one short kick, but last night, for example, was a 55 yard attempts. Two years ago it was always a punt.

  • Blog Poll

Should Jerra have signed Plax or Gator Boy Roy?

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    too obvious Trac.

    Kris Humphries... ha!

oh, here was my requested sleeper pick for our real #1 back in FA: http://twitter.com/#!/DonteStallworth/status/106071403329097728

  • Watching the game. I had to laugh when I saw the bumfuzzled looks by Lovie and the Drake when Roys catch was over turned.

  • The first two defensive stops were really more Giants lack of execution than our D stopping them.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Eli was a spazz _ missed some easy throws like a dumpoff to bradshaw, etc..

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Da Pep effect. He could feel julius breathe on almost every play.

  • In reply to Crown:

But I thought he was an elite QB.

  • BTW, we got an earthquake today and Hurricane Irene headed here by the weekend.
Maybe all my blaspheming finally caught up with me.
    Nahhhhh.

warm up for the Mayan new year baby.

...have you started stocking up on zombie killing equipmink yet?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

We had massive flooding at our last base in Nebraska lasting well into this summer, then we move out here and within a month, we have the biggest earthquake in VA since 1890-something, and Hurricane Irene decides to put Hampton Roads in her crosshairs.
What the fuck did I do to piss off those Mayans, anyway?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

MBP, you better make a pilgrimage to Tegucigalpa and appease those Mayan Gods. Sacrificing a virgin at the top of a temple usually does the trick.

  • Jennings had a nice open field tackle on Jacobs.

  • 12-4 boys. That is my official prediction. I know it sounds crazy but if Martz would have had a mini stroke for the skins and chickens games we would have been 13-3. I'm not playing would coulda shoulda. I'm telling you that we will win games this year. Let the Cutler apology blowjobs commence after strong performances against the Falcons, Saints and Pack. This kid is ready to fucking ball. If we get even semi decent blocking he throws for 3800 , 29 TD's and bangs a former Miss IL and a hot tennis slut before years end.
Now call Wilson and McGlover for special teams, cut every white linebacker not named Brian Urlacher and tell Pisa to sleep in TO's hyperbaric Michael Jackson oxygen chamber for a month to heal that fucking knee asap.

    rodgers dead.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

I know it's only preseason, so who cares, but we better have a more balanced attack when real football starts. In the first half, the Bears ran 9 times and passed 21 times. The last 3 passes were at the end of the half, but it's still a 2:1 passing to running ratio. Those are losing numbers when the regular season starts.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

word mang, we gotta run the rock and pass 1:1 with creativity and a certain level of moxy.

  • After watching the re-run, one things for sure, the Bears would be screwed if they hadn't picked up Jennings and Harris last year.

  • I agree! but you forgot one point.

    JOE WEBB STILL SUCKS!

  • Jamarcus Webb I mean.

  • Maybe I'm crazy but Cutler looks like a completely different guy this year. He had 4 passes dropped last night. If they catch 2 of them he's over 200 yds for the half. He was stepping into his throws and didn't have happy feet. I wouldn't have blamed him for happy feet after last year.

Can't blame him for knocking the bottom out of the Reality Chick. Give her credit for not bad mouthing Jay after the breakup. Usually those Reality Losers are all about publicity. Good or Bad.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

You're not imagining it Canada. He got in shape and improved his footwork. Jaws even pointed it out with some video replay slo mo's.

  • Maybe this former Miss IL could be Jay's new squeeze toy

The following players will have big years: Forte, Cutler, Hester, Peppers.

The following player should be cut: Roy Williams. Like I said above, and like Waffle often says, Fuck him in the face.

I hold out hope for Paea.

After Aforementoned Williams cutting, Dane Shavenhammershlonger is going to also have a big year.

The Bear Jew can play. I am guardedly optimistic.

My Pringles chubby has not stood fully erect for some time now. It's now hanging slightly to the left.

My hopes for the year are currently sky high.

Fuck RW right in the face.

I don't want to see Forte or Barber touch the ball the rest of the preseason. Nor Urlacher, Peppers, Briggsy and Peanut.

Two weeks until the regular season.

  • did sam hurd sit this one out? he is suposed to be a superior force on special teams, i couln't find him anywhere and he does not show up in the stats......the one thing about flatbread that i like, he is not wining about being hurt, when his knee is weak he is going to be vulnerable.....the ducks have been a team i follow and they played with great energy....its been bread into him, i say wait till next year and see if he can get his legs back under him......that was an expensive pick to throw away ...once wooten healed up he got after it, hopefully his sugery will not stop his progress...it was evident he sacrificed alot to get in this kind of shape.....i hope he gets some return on his hard work....it would be so cool for rogers to have to face three fast ends all game...........as for roy w.....i can only hope that some of the veteran talent will "inspire" him to step it up....if not let briggs send him into another dimension in practice and as urlacher offers him escort off the field he wispers something in his ear luike get busy or get lost......this is chicago we work for what we own......i think jennings is ready to match the need,,,graham and steltz hit with enthusiasm.....when is the next time we will be scheduled to run back 8 kickoffs......i hope next august.......once again i am so impressed with the skills of the wisconsin jew... he was one of three o linemen to get drafted this spring from coach bosshard...i will do a study on the other two and see if they are translating into nfl material and get back to you... there must be a reason young tice headed that way, even if he is not nfl matrial. i am curious to see if its the coaching at wisc. or is carimi just a natural....

  • In reply to huntinbare:

I'm worried about that HB, Hurd is my boy, there could be something in there for our receiving game, but he might fall victim to the depth chart.

I'm not sure we should be so complacent about the OL 'looking good' just yet. If the Bears play vanilla, you can be sure the Giants' DL were playing basic stuff too. They opened us a new one last year. All we've done is add a tackle and lose our center.
