Audibles From the Long Snapper: Bourbonnais

Audibles From the Long Snapper: Bourbonnais

CBS Chicago is giving out awards for local bloggers and it'd be fun to see if we can crush the competition and get DaBearsBlog to the top of the heap.  It would also be a nice promotional tool for us and the network.  If you like it here and feel like voting, click this link.

There are still several game-changing type players on the market.  The most promising addition looks to be the reported mutual interest between former Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu and the Bears.  Tatupu would step directly into the starting lineup, replacing Pisa Tinoisamoa.  (Pisa MAY and SHOULD re-sign with the Bears.)  A linebacking corps of Urlacher, Briggs, Roach, Tatupu, Pisa would be as talented and deep as the Bears have had in years.

Also available: WRS Braylon Edwards and Malcolm Floyd are out there but not logical targets for the Bears.  CB Kelvin Hayden, who ripped the soul from Chicago in the Super Bowl, should be a target.  You can never have too many corners in this system.

So if you're not on Twitter, here's how it works.  During camp practices, every single reporter covering the Chicago Bears Tweets every single play.  Based on all these Tweets (and they can get very obnoxious) there are three guys making an early "surprise" impact: Lance Louis, Major Wright and Dane Sanzenbacher.  The latter two mean little but many analysts have predicted Lance Louis will find his way into this starting lineup and I have predicted he'll end up being a better options at LG than Chris Williams.

  • See!! That video is hillarious. Everyone see now!!

  • So if Louis replaces Williams at G, then where the fuck does Cupcake williams go? and is Pisa resigning or not?

  • Lance Louis. Very cool name. It has a ring of destiny to it.

  • First to say I'll probably not be first. I'll definitely vote today.

I reccomended the name change from Who's John Galt to Who's Willie Gault. I'm gonna make another suggestion: Curtis Shaw Flag, if you don't change your name to Curtis Enis is a fag, don't bother to return.

Finally, a nice weather day in the Chi. It's been hot and muggy for two weeks straight; like Mother Nature has continually dropped queef bombs on our buetiful city.

Jennings v Bowman: Although Little Smurf had a stellar season last year, I'm hoping Bowman wins the job and gets another shot to prove himself. He had one bad game and abruptly gets benched last yr. I like his size and I think he has more upside and can handle physical WRs. Look forward to how that battle plays out.

  • In reply to Crown:

You're a good man, Charlie Crown.

  • Most of us have been concentrating on the o-line recently but in reviewing our stats from last year it's pretty obvious our pass defense was borderline sucky. We finished the season ranked 20th and I don't see how we got better in the offseason. The cheese played conservative the first two games against us to make sure the game didn't get sideways on them but when we played them in the playoffs they aired it out more and were successful in pulling away from us on the scoreboard. If the rest of the teams we play this year figure this out it could be a long season unless Martz finds a way to put more points on the board. I don't think we will have the luxury to go with a balanced attack if we can't do a better job against the pass.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

It's a matter of perspective - you're going by yardage right? We were second best in the NFL only to the Saints at refusing to allow receiving TDs. Only 14 allowed, less than one a game. The defense played bend-don't-break, which gives up the yards but not TDs. I'd say our pass D was excellent.

Rk Team G Pts/G Pts total Rsh Rec Ret Def
    1 New Orleans Saints 16 19.2 307 32 13 13 0 6
    2 Chicago Bears 16 17.9 286 32 14 14 1 3
    3 Pittsburgh Steelers 16 14.5 232 22 5 15 1 1
    4 Green Bay Packers 16 15 240 24 6 16 1 1
    5 San Diego Chargers 16 20.1 322 39 14 18 4 3

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

No sign of Asomugha or Revis in there - we sign Kelvin Hayden who Jefe said was still available and they might as well just hand over the Lombardi right now.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    FUCK. Green. Bay.

My goals for the squad this year:
    * Get into the SB
    * Win the SB
    * Kick the fuck out of GB and crush their pathetic, non-realistic repeat dreams (you know, like we could and should have done last year)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

and that boils down to us finishing the second game with Fudgepeckers and knocking their asses out of the playoffs!

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Couldn't have said it better myself Irish. I'm a bit surprised by the Saints actually.

That's gonna be a tough division too this year. Still, ours is harder.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

It's all in the context - teams could not run on us and since we went 11-5, we were front-running most games. That means the other team is going to have to air it out. Running on our D last year was not much of an option.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

It's also misleading because of the amount of time that the defense was able to sit in the 4th quarter in a cover-2/3 shell and let teams eat up yardage at the expense of clock. It's exactly what Irish said. If you think our pass D was not good last year, I don't know what to tell you. And yeah GB moved the ball well in the NFC championship game but not nearly as effectively as they did against the Falcons or the Eagles.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I never said our D wasn't good. I do think our secondary and pass rush could be better. I don't think we even ranked high in sack did we?

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

We did rank 5th in Int's which ain't to shabby.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

" it's pretty obvious our pass defense was borderline sucky."

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

More sacks would equal more awesome-ness. It just wouldn't even be fair if we sacked the shit out of them too. But look at the '84 team - NFL record 72(?) sacks which stands to this day. How did that work out for us? 10-6 and Joe Cool kicks the shit out of us in the playoffs. That was the day I fell in love with the Bears - the whole team, not just Walter - and my hatred of the Niners began.

Sorry Norske Baere - I can't pull an all-nighter this weekend cos I have one of those job-things to go to on Monday. But I think MBHAP is organizing one that might be cool for your timezone, sorry Mang. Aha - look up above....

As people have lives and can forget there's a draft on/can't make it ... I do advise all those who join to click on the 'My Team' tab, and go in and re-order the players at each position to your preferences (dropping all retired/injured players down to the bottom), and then selecting what position you would like to draft in each round - or leave it to draft the best available (according to the PCs idea of best available, which they aren't).

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    lol fuckin ass.

  • Whaddaya know Fresnuts turned up ... reverse psychology dude ... had to getcha in there :o)

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    Alright, signed up!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

lol'ed at the parade reference. Well done.

  • Thanks for the camp report Jeff.

  • In regards to Chris Williams, it's pretty telling he sucks when the Bears try him out at Center given the fact he was drafted in the first round to protect the blind side. Can't really blame Jerry on that one, all the scouts had him rated in the best technique category. Back injuries are a sign of things to come and he probably will never pan out.

  • from the propaganda on the DA SITE:

that's like saying my sister's beautiful and she should be prom queen. sshhheeessshhh#$$%!@%$#$!#!

  • Rightbackatcha Lobo, Lovie putting the pressure on Harris?

"Bears coach Lovie Smith singled out rookies Chris Conte and J.T. Thomas after Tuesday’s practice in Bourbonnais.
Conte, a third-round safety from California, intercepted two passes, while Thomas, a sixth-round linebacker from West Virginia, continued to make plays while working with the No. 1 defense alongside perennial Pro Bowlers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs."

“As a rookie, you need to do something to show up,” Smith said. “We’ve had a couple of them do that. Chris Conte, the earlier practices he’s looked good. Today, if you are a defensive back, it’s about getting interceptions, and I like some of the things he’s done. Same thing with J.T. Thomas. He’s gotten a lot of reps and he’s shown up also.”

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Don't worry mang, I'm as mad as hell ....

Fkn spread the word boys!! I'm backed up with Fox news jism mangs! No choice, BBC is boring. But FOX – are you for real?? 24 hours of DEBT!DEBT!DEBT! Obama’s a cunny! We owe 15 gazillion dollars because Obama's a baaad man! And nobody, NOBODY mentions why. Even Ron Paul – who has hounded Bernanke and Geithner before him – always stops just short of saying what he wants to scream from the rooftops … because he remembers what happened to JFK. He's afraid. That jism-guzzler Sean Hannity actually had the cajones today to say that We/You/The People were 15 trillion in debt because of medic-aid-care-whatever ... @#%^#@%$%$ Hot jiminy cricket ! He says it like he actually believes it!! Is he a genius plant? Not with that hair methinks! What a Johnny!

And speaking of hair - there's Trump saying he "doesn't want to be president, but he’ll have to step in unless the economy improves” … when it can’t improve ...ever ...not under the Federal reserve system.

"Where will the jobs come from Mr. Trump?" chirps sugar-tits (and have you seen FOX legal? Mwah!)
"Why China! We'll take em back from China! It's easy!"
And no explanation! Sound-bite given ...cheesy grin ... wave ...job done! "I'll vote for him!" thinks America. "He knows what he's talking about!"

    Yeah ! Screwing YOU!!

Fifteen trillion. It's got nothing to do with the fact that every dollar bill printed comes with a wodge-load of interest attached to it - nothing whatsoever - interest that has to be paid off every year by printing more money that has MORE fucking interest on it and THEN IT GETS HANDED STRAIGHT BACK TO THE ‘FEDERAL’ RESERVE. A bunch of sheister banks controlled by Evelyn De Rothschild ! The satanic spawn that have been there since the dawn of banking!! CHRIST! It's like a bad trip! And nobody says a word!! The biggest fattest smelliest elephant that ever sat in a room, literally firing crap out of its anus like a muck-spreader!! The interest to the Fed is continually compounded ! Fifteen trillion will be nothing in a few years! People will be saying “Ya remember when the debt was only FIFTEEN trillion?”

Please, is there a very wealthy person out there who gets this? Is there not one wealthy celebrity with a spare few million who could pay for ads to be made and then shown on TV in between American Gladiators and Survivor? A nice little Sesame Street thing that explains where money comes from and how the Rothschilds are bumming you all daily from England! Have you SEEN David de Rothschild - the Jesus look-a-like ?? How scary is he? Parading the planet as this fkn eco-warrior telling us to recycle our plastic and turn off our lights !!! WTF !! Heir to half the planet's fucking wealth!! HUNDREDS OF TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS made off your misery and the rape of the planet and he's acting like the son of God !! And it's against the U.S. constitution! What's the point of having a constitution then? Why bother?

    Deep breath. Yes, lots of serenity ... 90 seconds ... re-focus ... relax ... and breathe ....

NO! DAMMIT !! Where are the wealthy who see the scam ?? Help your brothers and sisters and children and grandchildren! Help them all!! Educate your children, educate yourselves take back your currency and ask yourselves why the most powerful nation the world has ever known is fifteen trillion dollars in debt. Tom Cruise - you sir ! You talk about wanting to help people?! Help them !! Pay for a ninety second ad just once!! It would be headline news except that it wouldn't be headline news because you-know-who has a finger in every pie of every news station and newspaper the world over or their finger up the asses of those who do, because you-know-who isn't on any of the rich-lists topped by paupers like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. He’s practically the invisible man to a world full of people that have too much shit to contend with to care who's running the world .... the resat are ignoramuses he helped dumb down! But we’re watching you …. Mr. Evelyn De Rothschild … we’re watching you and all of your satanic spawn ...we're watching, and you haven't RF-chipped us yet. No serenity until you burn in the lake of fire where you belong.

It’s time to get mad, people, it’s time ….

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Woof. Sorry, that was nearly two months of Fox news building up ...

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Wait, no, sorry for what ?

Guys you were talking about your little kids today. Do you love them? Do you really love them? Do you want a country for them to grow up in - the country you grew up thinking was free? Well it's not free and the Fed owns your ass hook line and sinker, it owns the forests and national parks and it owns your very own fucking birth certificates - you were all put up as collateral in a loan made in 1933 from the 'Fed' to the government to keep it solvent and people had better wake up really quickly and get with it.

    ¡Viva La Revolución!

“If Americans ever allow banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children will wake up homeless”
    - Thomas Jefferson

"Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes her laws."
    - Mayer Amschel Rothschild

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning."
    -Henry Ford

"Most Americans have no real understanding of the operation of the international money lenders. The accounts of the Federal Reserve System have never been audited. It operates outside the control of Congress and manipulates the credit of the United States" — Sen. Barry Goldwater (Rep. AR)

"We have, in this country, one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board. This evil institution has impoverished the people of the United States and has practically bankrupted our government. It has done this through the corrupt practices of the moneyed vultures who control it". — Congressman Louis T. McFadden in 1932 (Rep. Pa)

"We are completely dependant on the commercial banks. Someone has to borrow every dollar we have in circulation, cash or credit. If the banks create ample synthetic money we are prosperous; if not, we starve. We are absolutely without a permanent money system.... It is the most important subject intelligent persons can investigate and reflect upon. It is so important that our present civilization may collapse unless it becomes widely understood and the defects remedied very soon." — Robert H. Hamphill, Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank

"A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated governments in the world--no longer a government of free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of small groups of dominant men." — President Woodrow Wilson

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a monied aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. The
issuing power (of money) should be taken away from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs."
    - Thomas Jefferson

"To expose a 15 Trillion dollar rip-off of the American people by the stockholders of the 1000
largest corporations over the last 100 years will be a tall order of business." — Buckminster Fuller

"Every Congressman, every Senator knows precisely what causes inflation...but can't, [won't] support the drastic reforms to stop it [repeal of the Federal Reserve Act] because it could cost him his job." — Robert A. Heinlein

"...the increase in the assets of the Federal Reserve banks from 143 million dollars in 1913 to 45 billion dollars in 1949 went directly to the private stockholders of the [federal reserve] banks." — Eustace Mullins

    Yes, get angry ....

  • When I add it all up, it looks like an 8-8 type of year and a step back down in weight class for the defending NFC North champs.

Let's play a game. It's called "How wrong can Don Banks be?" This game is also known as "I am a huge vindictive pussy and after the 2009 Bears made me look like a common hack when I predicted they would go to the superbowl, I can't admit that they did well in 2010 and might do well this year too so I will just call it 8-8."

Don - call 8 and 8 you tiny girl. I'm calling 12-4, first round bye, NFC Championship vs the Pack and then who fucking knows. Anything can happen in the playoffs mang. The Lions gave the Packers fits last year and if they can pull out a win and we can pull out a win and beat the Lions twice we win the division players. Minnesota is going to have a tough year but since they Donovan it won't be as bad as it could have been.

  • Braylan Edwards may be the biggest ass clown in football. I detract all of my previous posts wanting this guy on our team. Good player, Fantastic Ass Clown....

  • As we know with Moss, who once ran a meter maid over because she was writing him a parking ticket - all is forgiven if you got big game. And Edwards led the league in dropped passes in 2008.

He's a punk. Chicago nightlife, he'd last a week before somebody needed stitches.

Ever since Ray Lewis perfected the killing posse, Edwards has seemed determined to take it up a notch from there.

Having said all that, he should come be a Bear. Lovie is boring, the Bears get boring because the McCaskey's don't tolerate Ocho type behavior. We need some of that here.

  • Yeah, I don't know what's up with the Braylon love on here. He's a tool with terrific talent and brick hands. I'd rather continue the Hester experiment. Fuck that guy.

Also, is there any chance of a possible radio show you can put on so the bloggers can call in and discuss Da Bears real time? Maybe even add video, I think that would be fantastic!

  • I don't think the Bears are done in FA, still plenty of Mil under the cap to sign another player or two while extending Matty.

  • In reply to Shady:

Jerry can't multi-task. How many times have we seen that? He literally has to do one thing until it's done and then move to the next thing.

He's working with Forte now on a new deal. Until that deal is done, no more FA signings.

  • In reply to gpldan:

His buddy Timmy Ruskell from SEA should be locking in on Lofa right about...

  • 35+ players from each team will be cut over the next 4 weeks. There will be a ton of talent in that stockpile. The BT is holding back for this reason alone. Under the current CBA we have to spend a minimum of 99% of the cap this year.

The moves we've seen to date have been stellar, but there will be more to come. Cap casualties, system casualties, and draft casualties will be abundant.

If Martz/Tice do not like what they see from their unit - we have the means to shop.

Insofar as the lock-out was meant to avert more money to vets, I'd like to see the Bears reach out to more than just Forte. Locker room building starts with rewarding your own... and they HAVE to spend the dough.

  • In reply to Viva:

Actually I heard that 99% figure is not figured on a per team basis until 2013.

  • In reply to Viva:

More leftovers, although leftovers from the Eagles or Packers would still be an upgrade.

I'm not sure who's in the last year of their contract for the Bears, but I do expect a certain amount of mula to be reserved to extend more than a few of our boys.

Keep in mind too that if Roy, Barber, Gholston, Okoye, or any of the Undrafted Free Agents pan out, we're going to need some coin to resign them as most are on a one year contract, so I expect Jerry to reserve a certain amount of money till about, say, November.

  • In reply to Viva:

Excellent point Viva. There will be many Danny Woodheads out there who find themselves cut form one team due to numbers plain and simple. Not because they weren't good enough, but because they were just roster casualties. Angelo's sitting there waiting to stock up from the group consisting of the 'one gem per team' that will get cut. We hope. And he'll have the cap space to do it.

  • In a totally non-football thing, I guess I have to vote for Brahms' Requiem over Mozart's, having sung both this summer. But damn, that is really splitting some hairs.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

I don't think anything beats Mozart's "Requiem" - call me a morbid fuck - possibly Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" , Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"?

    Are you Alto, Tenor, etc?

  • In reply to 4ever85:

I am a bass/baritone (really not either :-0), so I sing the bass part in SATB pieces. Have a listen to Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus some time. The density of beauty in that piece is extraordinary.

My pick for "awesomest vocal piece ever" is right here. Turn off the lights, close your eyes, and *listen*. Extraordinary. Nigh unbelievable.

Hell, listen to it several times, it keeps getting better.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    Or, go here
click the Music Player icon in the upper right, and when it comes up back up two tracks to the Mahler if your tastes are a bit more modern....

And now I'll stop my interruption and let it all return to FOOTBALL!!

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Bryn Terfel is a very fine Welsh tenor who does a good job on Mozart's AVC, Dave. He's well worth a check out.

Are you a Sumi Jo fan Dave? Lyric coloratura soprano o extraordinaire. That woman moves me to tears, especially in this piece which she sang as her father's funeral was taking place back in Korea, Schubert's Ave Maria. :

Her Caccini's Ave Maria is even better :

Her beauty is distracting though, so like you say, close your eyes.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

I'm aware of her, but not familiar. Thanks for the references; definitely worth the listen. On tenors, I think my favorite is John McCormack. Despite the crappy old recordings...

For what it's worth, I opine Schubert as the most underrated composer.

  • In reply to lobotobear:

  • Well, now that the high-decible bitching has receeded to a blood curdling scream.....I'll just post what I have posted here every preseason for - I dunno - every preseason I posted it here...

We aren't going to be nearly as bad as we were the first half of last year. Personally, I prefer to wait until we've actually played a few games before I start remembering our W/L records in the 70's with fondness.

Give 'em all some time to get it together.

And frankly, I wasn't at all disappointed in Banks' article - it went exactly where I knew it would go, despite his head-fake compliments early on.

  • Tiki Barber, who will turn 68 this year, is trying out for the Fins.

  • The F-in Eagles sign Ryan Harris last night. JA sits on a dildo and can't find talent to sign? He's good enough for the Eagles but not us. So pissed. What about Maxi pad Starks who the Stillers cut ? Oh yeah, the Stillers oline nearly got the rapist killed. WTF.WTF.WTF.WTF.WTF.serenity now, serenity now.

  • In reply to GuinnessPlease:

    Jebus H! The Eagles rock.

    Lots of serenity.

  • I had a cool experience today. I went and met a new customer, an old Polish lady from Chicago who is about 90 years old and walks with a walker. While sitting at her kitchen table listening to her talk (great stories), I see a crumpled up blanket by a chair, and I knew immediately it must be a Bears blanket. During a pause, I say I'm a Bears fan too. She gets fired up and tells me her deceased husband used to be friends with Ed O'Bradovich. She says Bobby Douglas and Sweetness are two of her favorite players. She says Bobby Douglas would have been a great QB if he had any talent around him, and he got 948? yards rushing in one season, the most ever by a QB. Then she says it's been 25 years, time for the Bears to win another Super Bowl.
I tell her a few Bears stories, then she asks what do you think about the Cubs? I said I haven't followed BB since 1992. She says, yeah, it's boring. Football, hockey, and Rugby are her favorite sports, but they don't show enough Rugby on TV.
Then she says "I hate the Vikings, and especially Fran Tarkenton. He was a little weasel who ran around like a flea on a griddle."
Talking to her made my day. Reminds me of my Grandma. I have a crew run by a Bears fan, and I've put him in charge of taking care of her yard. She will get special attention.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Great Stuff, Cor! Any Bears fan that lived through those years still hates Fran T. Glad you're taking care of her.

    I voted for ya. Jeff.

Great to read about "Glitchy" again. Welcome back Lobo.

Lots of laughs about Numb Nuts.

    Great Stuff!

  • In reply to TheFifth:

awesome! in 50 years, we're gonna hate Rodgers like she hates Fran.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

That's cool. Especially hatin' on Tarkenton the puss. Me too. I met someone really cool today. I won't share it cos then it's a one-up thing ...but it's cool to meet someone cool. Made my fkn day. And he gave me a job on top of it.

Funny thing was, we got talking about Asian history and the Chinese and how the west just dismisses the 'yellow peril' and I mentioned their medicine being around for 5000 years. Then he tells me about his brother who - like my dad - the doctors had told him "look, we've done everything we can do for we need the bed" Basically, "fuck off and die", right? So his brother goes to a chinese herbalist - dying of intestinal cancer - and figures, well, taking poisons over a long period of time did me no good, let's try the chinese way, take shit that's good for you. Dude is still alive.

Rang pops and told him to promise me he'd get on the old ching-chong-chang .....

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Good story Irish. My friend's Mom was told about 15 years ago that their was no cure for her cancer. She went to an "alternative" doctor in San Francisco, and she's been cancer free for over 10 years and is doing well.

  • Does Oakland have anyone worth a damn - because they are $17 million over the cap right now.
    Holy. Shit.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Does Al Davis contact Cubs Mgmt for contract advice?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

If you are referring to dead Cubs managers, I am sure they are in the same bridge club.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Part of that probably comes from Russell's contract they had to eat.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

And every other shitty contract they're currently carrying. The Raiders are where business sense goes to die.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I like Michael Bush but we have more backs than motherfucker.

  • Possible FA OTs still available

    - Max Starks, Pit (400 pounds coming off a neck injury)

    - Nick Kazur, Pats (Back injury)

    - Bryant McKinnie, Queens (Another Shamu)

    - Shawn Andrews, Gmen (Has a history of depression)

    - Flozel Adams, Cowgirls (OLDER than Kruetz)

    - Sean Locklear, SeaChickens (sounds intriguing - also fits Ruskell hard on 4 Seattle)

You can scroll down this link to get the rest of the D-list

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Give me Locklear from that list.

By the way, if the Bears can wait a year, Joe Thomas will become a free agent in 2012. The Browns are worried shitless to lose their pro bowl LT.

  • In reply to gwill:

No way the Browns are ever gonna let Joe Thomas walk. He's the greatest tackle of his generation (hopefully Carimi who took his place 4 Badgers follows suit).

He'll prob be franchised. But one can dream...

Larry Fitz on the other hand was due to become a Unrestricted FA due to a clause in his contract stipulating that he couldn't be franchised. That's why the Cards went ball to the wall in signing a QB to keep him happy.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Cleveland has lots of experience with people...franchises...sports icons...walking away.
Why overpay for a franchise LT if the rest of the roster is a shambles? Think of the value they could get for him, especially under the new CBA rookie wage scale.

  • What about giving up on UngaBunga and signing Kuhn? He's still out there. Forte might appreciate a lead blocker that isn't a TE.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Kuhn resigned with the Pack GP.

We should have signed Vonta Leach, now he's on the Ravens.

We should have signed Le'ron McClain, now he's on the Chiefs.

Two teams that, you know, really run coming off the bus.

I guess we want Forte to earn his payday.

  • In reply to gpldan:

We have four RBs I'd like to keep, as well as Unga and Tofu-man. Eddie Williams is bigger again but we can't keep em all can we?

  • We took Barber and Williams from Dallas. What about Davis?

    Lions d-line just took a hit...buuuuuuuuust.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I saw that. Lions luck has already kicked in.

Remember when we worried if the Lions got Asomuhga and added Fairly they would be scary?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Unfortunately they are very deep on their D-line so it shouldn't effect them too much.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Losing your first rounder for an extended period of time with no OTA, mini-camp, or other experience, due to a lingering foot issue (on a big guy, always a particular concern) an issue. Don't think this doesn't affect the Lions - they are well over the salary cap at the moment already, so it's not like they have ideal flexibility to cope with this.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Picture us when CW turned up gimpy in his first year - that didn't pan out too well.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Have you seen the rest of their Line MBHAP? That line is as solid as you will find, even without Fairley. I know what you're saying though. I am very glad Fairley is hurt.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Yup, we're actually in pretty good shape. Sorry Nick, but's life. Go Bears.

  • I'm 4 beers in after a 12+ hour day.....and these are my thoughts at the end of this thread.........
    1. Jeff, you do a superb job, in my vote essentially I said "thank you for providing a place for die-hards to get to know eachother and have smart and funny (though never at the same time) discussions about our beloved Bears. Again, Jeff, superb.
    2. If we aren't the first team in line to give up our #2 for 2012 to get Osi Umenyora(sp?), then our front office doesn't understand football. I watched the America's Game on the '85 Bears the other night (beacause I save it on DVR and watch it when I want), and bringing in Osi on the other side of Peppers with Adams, Paea, Okoye and Big Toe up the middle along with 'Lach, Briggsy, Pisa and maybe fucking Lofa the Somoan Headhunter.......that's the closest we'll get to '85. Angelo can't draft, so make that pick productive. Our secondary is legit if they have to throw the ball in 3 seconds.
    3. God Dammit.....why don't we kick the tires on Sean Locklear?!?!?

R.I.P Bubba Smith.........Hightower will live forever.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

Matty, I read somewhere today that the Giants yanked osi from any trade talk. Evidently they have decided to either keep or punish osi.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Whaaaa? Where did you hear that? Hell, the rumors on Sirius NFL were that the Giants had -lowered- their trade target to a 2nd rounder.

The Gints are nuts if they pull that with Osi this year. Cut your losses and move on.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    The Gints ARE nuts.
Should've taken a first rounder when they could get it.

  • gp, the adam's apple crossed my mind too.

  • In reply to gwill:

I really am an asshole. The Gnome is going to censor me soon.

  • MB, I just read that banks article. What a first class douche. I will never read another article he writes. I felt ripped off after reading it. He wrote the whole page just so he could sneak in the 8-8 sentence at the end. Please, no more douche banks articles.

  • Yesterday and today were very good days. My son will be turning 12 this month and I took him with me to my warehouse to help clean and organize for a large order coming in next week. I gotta tell you guys, there is nothing better than spending quality time with your boy and I mean nothing. Talking, sharing, teaching, joking and eating lunch together, just him and I. Spending the day with him and knowing what a gift he is to me is priceless. I must have done something right to deserve such a good son. I can honestly say that there is nothing that makes me happier than that. Take advantage of the time you have left boys. Make the best of every day, strive for excellence and cherish the ones you love.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Indeed, well said. I have 2, they are 4 and 2 now. I put them to bed last night and my 4 year old and I talked and joked for 15 minutes before he went to sleep. He gave me the biggest hug I've ever had, it it was my best moment as a father. Seriously, they are the only legacy I'll have, and I love them both more than anything else in the world. Can't wait for the moments like you experienced yesterday.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

You got that right Matty. Very special times.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    +1 mang

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Awww. Well said Big D. Especially the last sentence.

Now that I think of, the best times I had with my dad, were when we didn't do much talking, but did things together. His dad didn't know how to talk to him, so he didn't know how to talk to me. He'd often take me fishing as a kid, and mostly that's just sitting around on balmy evenings looking at the water and being quiet. When I was eight, he'd start taking me to the track where my education on the imperfect science of horse racing began, and the million and one things you need to know before a single cent gets placed on a nag. Even when things weren't going so good between us, we could go racing and just talk about the horses. Looking forward to passing that on to my girls.

P.S> have your mortgages on 'Pour Moi' to win the Arc De Triomphe and 'Frankel' to win whatever they enter him in at the Breeders.

  • The New York Giants gave defensive end Osi Umenyiora's(notes) agent two days to try and find a trade for him, but pulled the plug on that Wednesday morning, according to the New York Daily News.

Five teams - the St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, and Denver Broncos - expressed interest in Umenyiora, the paper reports, and two more - the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots - when there were mistaken reports that the team would take a second-round pick in exchange for the 29-year-old.

But the Giants stopped agent Tony Agnone from continuing the process, which irked Umenyiora so much that he wouldn't practice, the paper reports, and GM Jerry Reese told him to "take the rest of the day off to clear your head." However, Umenyiora stuck around to watch and fume for the rest of the day.

"He is sure they could've traded him," one source close to Umenyiora told the Daily News Wednesday night. "They had a lot more interest in him than they thought they would."

What are you waiting for? Follow Scoop du

  • In reply to Artoo:

See MBHAP!!!!!!!! The Giants did pull the plug on trade talk. I still thing he'll be traded at some point in time.

  • Isn't Roach slotted as the 3rd starting linebacker now? I haven't heard Pisa's name tossed around at all. Also if Tatupu comes in, he's an MLB and would be 54's backup, right?

  • In reply to Perno:

From what I've read, Tatupu's strengths are at MLB. He's got a DC quality brain, aka Hillenmeyer - and would pretty much be Lack insurance.

I do not see him playing the strong side. I see Roach being given a shot, as Iwuh is clearly Briggs protoge at WLB.

  • In reply to Perno:

I can't remember the last time we had a backup MLB worth a damn. We definitely need one badly. Look what happened when Hattie Hillenmeyer took over from Lach. It was disturbing to watch. Why did the Seahawks dump him? Two knee surgeries in the off season? How does he become viable for us? We should have signed Poz when he was on the market, or Stephen Tulloch.

  • Per ESPN:
Melton spent the offseason working out with his uncle, former Bronco and Super Bowl champ Ray Crockett. Melton went through combine-like workouts outside his old middle school in Texas.

"All we needed was a ladder, some tennis balls and a timer," Melton said. "My uncle is old-school."

Yes, I think I'm gonna like this Melton kid.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

Actually this was a trib article linked to "that" network. It seems Melton is up to 295 and has become a beast. He came into the league at 255.

Not according to Nelli. Here's the article.,0,1405997.story

  • Read it and weep boys. Once again Vegas misplaced our Teams name when releasing this years Super Bowl odds.

    * New England Patriots — 13/2
    * Green Bay Packers — 7/1
    * Philadelphia Eagles — 8/1
    * San Diego Chargers — 11/1
    * New York Jets — 12/1
    * Atlanta Falcons — 14/1
    * Pittsburgh Steelers — 14/1
    * Baltimore Ravens — 16/1
    * Dallas Cowboys — 16/1
    * New Orleans Saints — 16/1

    The Cowboys? Really?

  • I'm going up to camp the week of the 15th. The week King is going to be there. I will bring a bacon cheeseburger in case I see him. I will let him know what DBB thinks of his sports journalism.

    5 things I think I think:

    1. Peter King is an asshole
    2. Peter King is a dork
    3. Peter King is a douche nozzle
    4. Peter King hates the Bears
    5. The national press hates the Bears

  • In reply to gpldan:

    lol on the bacon cheeseburger.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

    Better go with the Baconator.

  • From Da Bears site:
Do you see Caleb Hanie serving as the Bears’ No. 2 quarterback or do you think the team is looking to bring in a veteran to fill that role?

    John T.
    Libertyville, Illinois

The Bears are definitely planning on Caleb Hanie filling the second-string quarterback position behind starter Jay Cutler. Coaches were very impressed with how Hanie performed in the NFC Championship Game after getting little work in practice throughout the week leading up to the contest. Asked what Hanie showed him in that game, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said: “A great deal of poise. He made a couple of errors in that game. But he came back after the pick and put us in the end zone, and to me that’s the measure of a quarterback. When something bad happens, how do you react after that? He came right back and stuck it in the end zone and that on his behalf is quite a large statement.”

Sorry, this still upsets me. After the Giants game only a total idiot would have insisted Collins remain the 2nd string QB. That idiot would have had to be Martz in my opinion.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

I think the Manofmoolah debacle may have hurt Martz at the Angelo and Phillips level. That was a bonehead signing.

If WIlliams goes bust, it will be worse for him.

Spencer made some comment about the Martz playbook, like "yeah, it's huge". So we're back to having the NFL's most complex offense with no camp to speak of. With a new center. And another tackle shuffle and possible a rook RT. And new wideouts.

I expect to see a lot of yellow in September.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

That's why I'm amazed they signed Enderle - nothing against the kid, don't the first thing about him other than he's not a vet and is not ready to play in the NFL should Cutler and Hanie get pummelled thanks to Webb the Matador.

  • Happy Birthday Satchmo! RIP Hilltower! Congrats on da gig Irish!

Gwill-Brilliant! I'll be tuning in shortly.

This is the greatest Bears game I've been to since the Mike Brown OT TD return into the locker room vs. the 9ers:
