Ten Important Notes From the First Day

I don't want to be updating every piece of news coming across the Twitter wires and leaking through the various local newspapers around the country,.  But I'll try to wrap things up as best I can and let you guys take over.  Here's ten things that happened today:

1. The Cowboys put Roy Williams, Marion Barber and Leonard Davis back on the market.

2. The Giants put two good, if aging, offensive linemen on the market: Shaun O'Hara and Rich Seubert.

3. The Vikings are reportedly working out a trade for Donovan McNabb.

4. The Dolphins are reportedly pursuing a deal for Kyle Orton.

5. Many stories claim Tarvaris Jackson-to-Seattle is basically a done deal.  Matt Hasselbeck will officially not re-join the team as many believe he is headed to Tennessee - where he'll start and groom Jake Locker.

6. Bernard Berrian and Jimmy Kennedy are done in Minnesota.

7. Baltimore released McGahee, Heap, Mason, Gregg.

8. Mark Sanchez has offered to restructure his contract with the Jets in order to keep Santonio Holmes in New York.  They are also rumored to be a possible destination for Namdi.

9. Mason Foster has signed with Tampa, leading many to believe Barrett Ruud will no longer be with the team.  It'll be interesting to see if the Bears kick the tires on Rudd as they attempt to add depth at linebacker.

10. The Bears face competition for the services of Olin Kreutz and Nick Roach.  I don't see a scenario wherein Kreutz leaves.  He once spurned Miami and took less money to stay here.  If Roach is guaranteed a starting job by some time, I can see him leaving.

  • TheFirst.

  • mmmm interesting topics Jefe. Anything rumoring around about the Bears in Free Agency?

  • hear we are after Brad Smith? Nothing Special, I want Sidney Rice.

  • Bears SIGNED 19 ROOKIES? Im guessing the posts take a long ass time to show. FUCK CN!

  • i'm reposting this because the site moves at the speed of old people fucking....

Orton is getting screwed balls deep in his neckbeard, yet again. I feel for that dude. First Lovehammer screwed him in the neckbeard with his loaf of pumpernickelesque shlong, and now Fox is doing the same. I bet he ends up a sticky bearded viking.

  • I hope we make the 1st big splash FA signing of the offseason. Come on JA. Sign like your job depends on it.

  • Da Site has listed 19 undrafted FA's signed, but Dane Sazenbacher (WR, Ohio State) isn't listed in the article. I hope we get/got him.

  • In reply to Viva:

I had two immediate thoughts when I heard the Bears signed Dane Sazenbacher. I couldn't believe he wasn't drafted and he reminds me a lot of Bobby Ingram. He's not big or fast, but he's a tough MF and a good football player who knows how to get open. That guy has no fear to go across the middle and fight for the ball. I've seen him get destroyed by a hit and hold on to the ball, and catch another clutch pass on the same drive. I hate OSU, but I always respected that guy.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Hopefully he has some Woodhead in him. Pumperniclesqe loaf

  • Da Site claims we signed 19 Undrafted FA's today, bu the list does not include Dane Sanzenbacher (WR, OSU). I hope we get/got him...

  • Anyone besides me rather see McNabb with the Queens than K.O.?

K.O. had 41 TDs and 21 picks over the last 2 seasons under an ersatz "boy wonder" coach who was WAY in over his head and seemd to be only good at chasing away most of the top talent on his team.

With that track record, I don't understand why the Cardinals don't seem to be showing any interest in Orton as opposed to the clearly UNproven Mr. K.Kolb.

Don't The Bears have enough aging offensive linemen?

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I think K.O. would be more motivated every time he plays Cutler and the Bears, so yeah, I'd rather see McNabb in purple.

Is Orton just the right guy in the wrong place? Does he have bad hygiene? Why is he so dissed?

And our Oline is a bit schizo. We have Williams, Webb, and now Carimi, who are really young, and Garza and Kreutz who are really old.

We need QUALITY olineman in the 26yr old range to make them all compete, and therefore, improve.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Good for me Al, I wouldn't like to see Kyle hitting Shabba all day long in the seams, and handing it off to AP when he got tired of throwing touchdowns. McNabb is toast.

  • I really hope we're not aiming for Brad Smith. Didn't he just run the Wild Cat?

And, that link on the side of this blog has nothing to do with nude gardening. I feel used.

  • Then again, your team's owner could be Mike Brown of the Bungles who, rather than get SOMETHING for a viable QB who no longer wants to be in his employ, will instead, apparently, allow Palmer to just retire. What a maroon.

  • Carson Palmer calls it quits for good.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Start of a long and prosperous color commentator career.

  • No Satana Moss here.. he went back to Washington

  • This league is flying. Santana is back in DC and Johnson signed a 72 million deal with Carolina.

As for the Brad Smith thing, he could excel in Chicago but he wouldn't replace a #1 wideout. He'd be brilliant kick return insurance as it seems Danieal Manning is leaving town and he'd provide another weapon on the offensive end.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

man from famine to deluge in a day.

    Pretty awesome actually.

  • Tried posting all this shit multiple times today. Fucking Cn.

    vjack OOOUUUUT!

FUCK, yanda and chuck johnson off the market already. Damn it.

  • I cant wait to see what the Bears first Big move is going to be. The suspense is killing me. Hoping for a good OL/Gard duo and a decent WR, ONE TIME! I`m going to bed now, hoping for some epic news to morrow morning.

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

I'm waiting for more epic fails like letting Shabba go, Norske. One of the worst front offic es in teh NFL is just bound to be underwhelming. Let's see what happens on Friday though.

  • lots to look forward to: http://network.yardbarker.com/nfl/article_external/the_funniest_nfl_rookie_hazing_photos_of_all_time/5724076

    What. in. thee. fuck: http://blacksportsonline.com/home/2011/07/nfl-player-adewale-ogunleye-suing-housekeeper-for-eating-cake-sleeping-in-his-bed/

  • In reply to MB30SD:

If you're going to squat in someone's house, do you really have to go and eat the man's cake?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

yeah MBP, that's just taking it too far!

    Get off my cake fool!

  • I do not understand how the Jets would be able to afford a decent roster with 1/4 of their salary tied up in their starting cornerbacks. They do have to field 9 other guys on D.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Let them try Mike, I'd love to see it. I don't buy into Ryan, never did - he's a screw-up who is where he is because his dad was Buddy Ryan and he's got his playbook. He will remain forever the kid that used to steel beer beer from the player's cars.

For real on Barber? He's got way more mileage than Chester, and Chester was only less-than-stellar last year because our line sucked. Remembering his time with the Queens is a truer picture of the man.

  • I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Barber as a backup/change-up to Matty, Anybody know what kind of cap hit we would take by cutting Chester? I can't recall but I assume he had a multi-year deal.

  • you guys gta give it up...
as much as I want it to happen,
were not gettn a big$$$ receiver...
were already paying Skunk like one AND pretty soon Knox is gna wanna get paid....
and the "organization" already confirmed we weren't gettn one...
we need to focus on getting this o-line better, I think that should be priority #1...
as far as these 19 unstaffed rookies gettn signed....
    they're all just camp bodies....
gurantee we dont keep HALF of em....
    with that being said....

I haven't watched ESPN since the Bulls were eliminated from the playoffs....

  • Make that 26 undrafted rookie FA's signed

How about some vets JA? Keep sigining. Carpo tunnel that f'ing hand til it cramps up.

  • Aromashodu went to the Vikings

  • In reply to Artoo:

Well I hope he finally gets the chance to be paid. He has heart and deserved a better shot than Chicago gave him (kinda like Orton). Plus, he can have a monster year for Minny and it won't scare me one bit.

  • I just had a wet dream of Nnambi in our secondary. Time to clean up and get back to reality.

  • Keep. Roach.

  • instead of posting multiples from the thread... here's the whole thing, including the dets on Maynard: http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/

  • Giants have now cut Shawn Andrews as well. Veteran offensive linemen are now officially there for the taking. Will the Bears bite on a couple?

  • Jeff, why don't you put a twitter feed up there?! I know you did it b4

Aramoshadu going to VIkes! if they get Orton, I'm gonna be pissed! Yes, I'm going exclamation mark crazy!

  • If we sign at least 10 vet oline.. I will be happy. There are a lot a good names out there but remember.. they were cut for a reason. That being said, it would still be nice to have some vets to just plug in because rookies are not going to be ready.

  • In reply to Artoo:

That reason, for alot of names getting cut, is Moolah.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    and Namdi

  • I don't like sloppy seconds, but the sad truth is, that another team's cut WR, T/G are still better than our starters. Thanks, Jerry.

And did all the big time FAs decide to wait a day? WTF. Also, does this madness end at a certain time, like 10pm Eastern, or does it continuously stream. If so, I don't condone meth, but...

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Yup, Jerra is going to have to cut some good players being 20 mill over the cap. They have a pretty good roster for such a sucky team, he does pick good players. Just can't afford em all ....

  • Watch us sign Todd Heap lmao

  • Good Cheat-Sheet here on Top 40 Undrafted Free Agents (UFDAs) by Pat Kirwan

  • In reply to 4ever85:

And 1...I SAY 1 of those top 40 that he mentions the bears have signed and he was # 25! The Bears I hope are signing the bottom of the barrel so that way they can fill the roster and can sign 2 or 3 big names on Fri... I hope.

  • In reply to Darrek:

that's too logical 4 Jerry, though he has surprised us the last two years (with FA at least), so hopefully he keeps the "I'm gonna get fired" mentality.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

I see multiple Centers on that list. Come on Bears, bring in some talent!

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

We did bring in J.C. (Julius Ceaser) Brignone, who also coincidentally wrestled in college, methinks.

An olineman on a power running game team for the SCC who played against Fairley and those SCC nasty dlineman...sounds promising.

Based only on the names on this list (so I'm ignoring half the Giants' offensive line), I would put my top 6 targets as follows:

    Matt Light (T - Patriots)
    Sidney Rice (WR - Vikings)
    Doug Free (T - Cowboys)
    James Anderson (LB - Panthers)
    Jonathan Joseph (CB - Bengals)
    Malcolm Floyd (WR - Chargers)

There are a lot of other guys out there. But if I'm looking at a solid lineman, I'm looking at a dependable left tackle veteran to anchor the line while we let two young prospects see if they can play left and right together for the long run. If I'm looking at a WR, then I want a #1. Sidney is my top choice, if he isn't available or becomes over-priced, I'm looking at the best value that has upside and that's Malcolm. As for the other two, they fill needs we have on D and make the team better. 'Nuf said.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

JJoseph and Floyd need to be bears...JJ is a perfect fit for the cover 2 and Floyd 's 6'5 225 will be just wht we hav been asking for over the last, what, i don't know...forever.

  • In reply to Darrek:

And... if those are our big FA splashes, we will still have cap space (that must be spent) to fill up the roster with some O-line talent and to re-sign some of our more expensive in house guys (like the linebackers).

Nnamdi would make any team better. But is our cover-2 scheme built to spend that kind of money on a corner? We need servicable DBs and to spend the big bucks on certain other key spots.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I agree, no point in pursuing Nnamdi with our scheme. I said it last year and I'll say it again - spend the $ on line help on both sides of the ball.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

The thing is MB is that he could fit our system talent wise because he is that good he could adapt...but for the money, is it worth it? JJ is better mentally w/the tools for the Cov 2...and won't cost nearly as much. They're only a couple of years aprt in age and JJ needs to get the hell away from crumbling cincy. And you are right about the O-line...get these 2 guys and 1 very good o-linemen. The roster fills will come

  • In reply to Darrek:

Agreed. Joseph was made to play cover two, and Floyd is a good wr without character/injury/money concern, which would leave us with getting one major olineman, and possibly later in the week, pick up a discarded olineman like Leonard Davis on the cheap.

Still, I'm going with the consensus here: 2 olinemen + 1 (WR, CB, LB, etc)

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    Dead on balls accurate 85!!!
I'm pulling for ya Jerry this year to not to use your instincts anymore and go w/what the fans want...PLEASE DO NOT USE YOUR HEAD AND GET IT FUCKIN DONE>>>!!!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

We need 3, possibly 4 OL. The current roster is garbage, and we have no idea if Camini is another bust or not.

We need, at minimum, a guard, center, and tackle. Absolute minimum.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Cowgirls are dumping everyone for either one of two reasons:

    1) They're making cap room to resign Doug Free

    2) They're making cap room for Nnamdi.

Rumor has it, Sanchez is going to restructure his contract to possibly land Nnamdi. If so, Peyton Manning would look like a real douche demanding 25mil a year while the rest of his team sucks.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

They're dumping salaries because they are WAY THE FUCK over the cap next year and not remotely within reach of the 3 mil advance range. Personally, I think they are going to suck major buttholes next year. Cutting Roy Williams is not going to help until 2012 in salary terms.

  • The Bears should be able to eliminate 1/3 of the sacks from last year just by getting rid of the 7-step drops by Cutler. They can eliminate a few more sacks by actually sticking with the run game this year and not abandoning it before the game starts. It's on Martz. Forte averaged 4.5 yards a carry last year, which is way above average.
History lesson: In 2009, Aaron Rodgers was sacked 37 times in the first 9 games. If things didn't change, he would have been sacked 65 times that year. Those are Matt Shaub numbers. Their OL was in shambles. They changed up the OL, but they also went to quicker routes. Rodgers only got sacked 15 times in the last 7 games, and they made the playoffs.
The Bears won 7 of 8 games last year until the final game against GB. Martz went back to the 7 step drop, and Cutler got pounded. In my opinion, a large % of the problem is on Martz. The OL has no push up the middle, which is a problem, but I think Martz needs to change the play calling to fit the offense. He doesn't have the 1999 St Louis team anymore. We have enough players to be a productive offense.

  • i'm a little concerned that we aren't hearing more about the Bears being involved with ANY meaningful tugs of war with any other teams over prospective free agents.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

i badly want to ask if you're surprised Johnny... but I have to hold my tongue, you never fucking know what crazy (or dumb) jerry is going to pull in FA. Should be an interesting ride nonetheless.

He'll probably go big and hit 1 of 3... as usual.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

considering that we are 2 to 3 pieces from the superbowl with some semi-coherent balanced offensive playcalling?? yeah, i would hope that a guy making millions of dollars to do what you and i could do blacked out on stoli could get it done and i don't want to be surprised, please god don't let Jerry Angelo angelo the fuck out of this opportunity.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Agreed, the silence is concerning since we do have some cap space.

But then again, I'm not seeing any players in the news that I'm desperate for either.

I'm surprised there isn't more talk about who's making a play for Nnamdi - the only team I've heard about is the Jets and I just don't see it happening there for the money he wants.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I really don't think the shit will hit the fan until Thursday morning - this is all prelude.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

yeah, but we should at least be hearing "Kruetz signed. Adams signed." esp since both have adamantly claimed they wanted to play for us. Getting a little ansty about that.

Apparently Seattle and Minny are in a bidding war for Rice. Hope Sea wins. As a matter of fact, I want all NFCN FAs to go elsewhere, and none to arrive (I don't want to see Nnamdi in a Lion's uniform, or Kyle Orton in purple, or anything in puke yellow and green - except Favre lol)

  • In reply to 4ever85:

No updates from Larry 'I only wright what they let me' Mayer @ bears .com at all about Oli and AA... sure would like to see this done @ 5:00:01 on fri.
Kaplan had all the guns on CTL today and none of them really talked about any updates from Halas Hall( praise god) that there was any money on the table being @ least tendered...just a bit nervous cuz rumor has it that there are 4 other teams making offers for Oli...

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

i know it is amazing but i only found out a couple days ago that Nmandi is 30. that is pretty bad ass that he is 30 yrs old and plays like that.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    That Lion's D-line + Nnamdi = trouble.

Ppl think cbs shouldn't get paid that much, but Nnamdi and Revis are exceptions. They pretty much cancel out the opponents premier WR or even half of the field, which means the second corner has TWO safeties roaming around back there, blitzing, or in the box for run support, which coupled with Suh, Fairely, Bosch and Co...not good.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    Lions not getting him

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

yeah, I think that scenario is only in a Lion's fan wet dream. He'll prob end up in the NFC east or even the Bucs.

But Nnamdi's situation is crazy. If you were to tell me that someone with 19 total tackles and 0 ints, ffs, sks would be getting about 20 mil a year the next season, I'd think you were smoking, but those are Nnamdis 2010 stats. Teams just stopped throwing his way.

To put that in perspective, Peanut's 2010 stats: 82 tks, 3 ff, 5 int.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Cromartie also cancels out the opposition but people don't mention that because they don't like him. He's better value.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

We can't sign other team's RFAs until Friday, right? That's why it's so quiet.

  • McNabb to the Vikes...

  • Yanda for Ravs resigned, and now Doug Free (Cows).

We better hurry the fuck up, lest we be stuck with sloppy seconds.

  • Shabba to the BiQueens. Fuck. My. Life.

Get thee hence to endless night, Angela.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

ur late to the party Irish!

McNabb also likely to Queens, which is the lesser of two evils between him and Orton.

You wanted Leshoure for us, now he's on the Lions. You wanted Shaba, now he's on the Queens. I think you should stop wanting players for us, they tend to end up for our rivals lol

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Who gives a shit about Shabba?

  • It's amazing one of the worst GM's in the NFL and one of the worst coaches in the league got the Bears to the NFC Championship game last year. We don't even have a big #1 receiver like the 5'11" Greg Jennings for the Packers.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Greg Jennings is a #1 receiver in the truest sense of the word. Make no mistake about that. He plays like he is 10 feet tall and imposes his will and athleticism on the other team.
If our GM had even partially addressed the line we are in the superbowl. If they ignore it again it is a travesty.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Great post Fifth, I get so sick of the man-love for height around here. Like for Shabba... the guy has failed to make like five teams now.

Absofuckinglutely on both counts, Waffle. Especially the part about will; Jennings and the Panthers' Steve Smith share it in abundance. If Knox could just get an inkling of it...

I'll shut up now, as you all know where I stand on the Bears. Great football teams are categorically defined by the quality of their lines. Personally, if we resign Adams and our second Samoan turns out, we're okay on the defense. The other side of the ball, however...

  • In reply to SC Dave:

The thing about Will, Dave, is it doesn't translater into redzone touchdowns where only the ability to stretch the field counts. Notice any smurfs in the top TD catchers last season ?

A big body like Kevin Walter has as many TDs as Antonio Gates and Andre Johnson. More than #1 guys like V-Jack, Dirty Ward, Dwayne Bowe and Roddy White !

    1 Larry Fitzgerald 12
    1 Calvin Johnson 12
    3 Anquan Boldin 11
    3 Randy Moss 11
    5 Tony Gonzalez 10
    5 Lance Moore 10
    5 Terrell Owens 10
    8 Greg Jennings 9
    9 Antonio Gates 8
    9 Andre Johnson 8
    9 Kevin Walter 8
    12 Bernard Berrian 7
    12 Dwayne Bowe 7
    12 Isaac Bruce 7
    12 Antonio Bryant 7
    12 L Coles 7
    12 Anthony Fasano 7
    12 Vincent Jackson 7
    12 Vis Shiancoe 7
    12 Hines Ward 7
    12 Roddy White 7

Doesn't matter if T.O., Randy Moss, or Plax can't run, they just have to get out of bed and line up at the 10.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    Damn, Jerry Rice was good.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

He was - the best WR ever. Despite, or perhaps because of, not being a head case.

I notice Gonzales is in that list. Couldn't we use Olsen and Kellen Davis instead of worrying about getting a wingnut to "just get out of bed and line up at the 10"?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Jerry Rice was awesome. 22 TD's in 12 games in 1987! I agree with you Waffle about Greg Jennings. He's a stud.

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that the Bears are letting everyone out bid ea other, while they sit back and pick up the left overs, resign their guys, and sign ONE big name T/G as well as Brad Smith and Durant.

    That would be vintage Jerry.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Agreed. I don't care so long as we get *two* good offensive linemen out of the deal. Rather have three, but one can be a project.

  • Well, anyone wondering what the Bears did today and why we aren't hearing about free agency. Check this out:

As far as I see, we were one of the most active teams in Undrafted FAs today (I think Jacksonville was #1). This is a good way for Jerry to spend his time... he has an eye for deep cuts.

As others have pointed out, I agree that we don't hear from the Bears in the big boy FA pool until Thursday or even Friday. That's when contracts will get signed.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

That is a very interesting list. I was trying to draw a correlation/pattern between teams who have signed a bunch of UFAs vs those that didn't, but I'll have to keep looking.

Good teams like the Bears, Steelers, Pack and Chargers have been busy with UFAs, but so have bad teams like Jax, Sea.

Cap space? Good scouting personnel? Fundamental philosophies? hmmmm

  • So I'm watching Naomi Wolf's "End of America" and I am ashamed to say this is the first I have heard of 'Blackwater' in the U.S. Then it's pointed out that Hitler's paramilitary organisation was called "Schwarz Wasser" or "Black Water"

    Are you fkn kidding me?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

Although if we make a play for Brandon Marshall and Ryan Harris I may be tempted to leave the real world behind for a few months ....

  • I know why we are not signing anyone..

We have to give Forte his payday.

Unless he is going to wait till this season ends....

  • Everyone can shoot me..

    I hope we sign Moss..

I gurantee he will do great this year. If he goes to a team that has a qb to throw to him..

  • In reply to Artoo:

We're not signing Moss superman. Unless you fly around the orbit of the earth and reverse time so that we get Minny Moss.

We're gonna resign Kreutz, Adams, maybe Roach, Graham, then almost right after, Brad Smith, Durant, Weatherford and some surprise FA that will hopefully thrill us more than kill us.

I don't necessarily agree it should go down like that, but that's my objective prediction. It's Jerry, after all.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

i hope you are wrong about Smith. we need Offensive linemen badly. If we get stronger at the line we have a great chance to mirror last years success and then some.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Unless the Bears are blowing smoke up everyone's ass, Smith seems to be a person of interest.

I can only surmise that it's because of some new CBA qb rule, or that we kill four birds with one stone (a "big" wr, back up qb, trick play Martz toy, and KR replacement 4 manning).

It's not too bad of choice considering that all reports point to the Bears staying out of the WR FA pool all together. So if it's between NO wr fa pick up and smith, hey, we got the money.

    - it will make the opp def prepare a little more - they'll have to prepare for hester, forte, olsen, and smith in sub-packages.

Of course, I'd rather get Floyd lol

  • Speaking of centers, Pompei wrote:

"If Linnenkohl ends up being a find for the Bears, it won't be the first time they have hit on an undrafted center. Jay Hilgenberg joined the team as an undrafted center in 1981 and subsequently played in seven Pro Bowls."

I'll hug that dream. Wouldn't that be something?

With Cofield going to the Skins does that mean Jenkins can be had? If he can be had to we try to had him? i want offensive lineman but I really think Jenkins can fill 2 roles with the Bears at tackle and end. Tough choices so let's see how today plays out.

Bear Down! Let the 2nd day of Footballchristmashannukah begin!

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Jenkins seems to be a productive dt/de, WHEN he's healthy.

I don't think I want to go through that again.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Here are two other possible dlinemen I'd prefer if we go that route

BUT, do I really need to say it?...oline....

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

I like that Johnny... I think our family is going to have Footballchristmashannukah this year. Has a nice ring to it.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

is it like festivus? festivus for the rest of us...if so, I shall begin with the airing of grievances...

  • Dave, Corm (please change your name back corm), Johnny, as you both know... with you 1000% and always have been.

3 new very good FA Olinemen and our receivers will all instantly grow 8 inches in cutty has time 'ability' height. I know that I've continued to beat this dead horse for months on end, but if we only address (and really 'fix') the oline this year, we will have all the pieces necessary to take the lombardi with the team that's already in place.

If Jerry fails (for the 4th year) to address our weakest link, and he fields an oline that's end up in the last 1/4 of NFL olines, we have zero chance of getting to the big show, and he will get cutty hurt. We’re NEVER going to be as lucky with injuries again, so we need real players this year. That much injury luck two years in a row is probably unheard of in the NFL.

Anyway, we need three ‘bigger name’ (I would include guys like the charger’s dumbrowski or clarey in that definition) olinemen and a few other scraps off waivers and shit at DB or LB.

Want to know that terrifies me… the thought that jerry only knows one fucking trick… sign the one HUGE name in FA for HUGE money and get on TV. I’m terrified that he’ll go get Ass-o-mungus and no one else and then end up on TV with that big dumb ass grin on his face like he just invented the cure for fucking cancer. I’d love to add that dude, but not JUST him. Don’t laugh… think about it… is something like that really beyond Jerry?

  • Check this out: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/nfc-free-agency/

    and this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/afc-free-agency/index.html?sct=nfl_t11_a5

    Couple thoughts:
    • There are a TON of UFA olinemen out there… not sure how many are good though, haven’t hear of many of them. I’m sure there are plenty of diamonds in the rough to be had
    • KC has THREE UFA centers…3!
    • Nick Mangold is also an UFA
    • Did you see the browns list… damn, they are losing half the team
    • Damn Clarey signed and Dumbrowski is an ERFA

Jerry better get this right gents. Three. O. linemen. Jerry. Everything after that is gravy.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I say ten but three will be enough.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'm not sure how updated or accurate that first link is. It still lists Doug Free as a UFA, and he already signed a 30mil deal with Cowgirls.

But yeah, there are gonna be a lot of older oline cap causalities lying around like Leonard Davis

"But of the three general managers in Chicago sports facing their most defining week of the year as Major League Baseball's trade deadline intersects with NFL free-agency, Jerry Angelo is the one I would keep away from sharp objects."

  • We actually signed someone! Ok, it's our draft picks LB Thomas and QB Enderle.

    Hey, it's a start.

Actually, I'm pretty impressed with our efficiency in choosing UFDAs, and signing our own promptly, well, we're always good with that.

  • ESPN reports that JT Thomas and Enderle are signing their contracts today. All i want to hear is Carimi and Paea have signed theirs and that Brad Smith was actually code for Sidney Rice or Jamal Brown and Dahl.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

I think the Vikes are signing Rice? Thank god we signed the third string QB that will be of absolutely no use to us if Hanie goes down ....

  • In reply to MB30SD:

See that’s what I mean man, why aren’t we thinking out of the box like the redski…. Oh, wait… jerry angelo… never mind.

Stallworth is a stud: 6’0” 220 that still has a whole lot to proove. Would have been a PERFECT pick up for our #1 WR issue on the cheap me thinks.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Would you really weant that jerkoff wearing our team colors? His last impact play was when he killed that lady drunk driving....He was a fucking phantom last year.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

did we really want to pay Holmes $50 mil, $24 mil guaranteed for 5 years?

(and he prob gave the Jets a hometown discount).

The Jets now are like the Favre Vikes - all in.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

I was actually talking about Stallworth 85. I was never on the holmes bandwagon (although he's a damn good weapon). I think Stallworth would have fit our needs perfectly. He's a big, fast dude who's a known entity who has a shitload to prove after killing a man.

I don't know the dets of the deal the skins did with him, but I guarantee it's not even near holmes money... or even floyd money. If we had a GM who wasn't a fucking buffoon, we could have had our big bodied tough #1 guy cheap as dirt. Just saying mang.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Stallworth signs w/Deadskins..

  • In reply to Darrek:

correct Darrek, that is what I was talking about... Jerry should be thinking about moves like that.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

my bad, holmes...see how I did that?

I was replying to your previous link to Holmes, but it somehow replied to Stalloworth. That does seem like a lot of Mula for Holmes though.

I don't think we have to ever tell the McCaskey to go cheap, btw.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

MB, Stallworth sucks, and he hasn't done shit in 5 years. Knox had more receiving yards last year than Stallworth has ever had in his career.

  • Word around the twitter campfire is that the 49ers are after Kreutz (lost their C to the NYG)

Probably not going to be an issue though

  • In reply to Sarcastiholic:

what would be funny is if the 49ers get Kreutz, then we get O'hara, thus completing the trifecta.

  • In reply to Sarcastiholic:

With Olin and a lot of other FAs on our team and otherwise, I have to think we're more attractive to a vet because we can contend now.

Look at Sidney Rice. He's getting fought over by the Favreless Vikings and the now Hasselbackless Seahawks. Those teams might not get 10 wins next season combined.

The Bears meanwhile are signing most everyone back, have a solid QB in Cutler, and stand a great chance of contending for another trip to the NFC title game.

    Where would you go?

  • Don't know why everyone still thinks the Wild Cat is a great idea (especially for the Bears)

And I'm claiming a DBB fantasy spot this year!

"Bears contact Colon; busy behind scenes"

I wouldn't mind one of the guards from Atlanta either.

  • Bears blog: Bears contact Colon; busy behind scenes

  • Braylon Edwards gets 1 year active probation, 100 hours community service for violating terms of probation with DWI. No jail

I think that is the news that the Bears were waiting to hear.

  • Willie Colon is considered a contingency plan if the Bears are unable to land Jermon Bushrod.

  • Babin leaning towards Philly to play under his old coach.

  • Rumor mill grist: Bears to ask Josh Bidwell to come in, look over as punter.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Think we'll end up w/ that McGee guy we've cut 3 times a punter this yr GP.

  • Im posting to quicly SLOW DOWN? WTF is this bullshit? it was my first fucking post of the Day. WHAT do you say JEFE, time to take this blog somewhere else? sigh I miss the old blog days.

Any rumors floating around to get the juices flowing? I expected that we had all this fucking Cash flow we would atleast sign ONE big time player. Where the fuck are you? HELLOOOOOO........... My balls are still crossed.

  • All I hear is talk of a punter. Shit man Give me a joint, a 40oz and Ill kick the fucking ball for ya. I think WE NEED A SOLID Defensive TACKLE. A tank ya thats what we need. Add a solid CB in there and a promising Safety.

  • The Bears are as good as they are because of specials. Look how much we hurt teams thanks to Hester on the "offensive side" of specials. Brad Maynard kicks a beautiful coffin corner, but his distance suffered and that really hurt us on field position last year. Its not the most important piece, but its a piece nonetheless.

  • Plaxico likely to choose between #NYG and Steelers

    let the chubbies begin

  • lot of waves by other teams today. Chargers making some great moves. Saints.

All quiet at hallas. Better be preparing for a shitstorm tomorrow man.

Fucking sign some people of consequence Jerry!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB, I am sure we will.

Wideouts.. will be Edwards or Williams at decent price and decent linemen

A lot of vet lineman on D and O.

The absolute worse case... we resign Olsen and Forte, and only get one vet on the online.

  • In reply to Artoo:

erik, you believe jerry will get it done huh? I hope so lad.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

One of those three senarios will happen. Just depends on which one you are ok with.

  • In reply to Artoo:

    only one lad, only one.

    1. OL
    2. OL
    3. OL

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    I'll sing to that choir!

  • Common Jerry, make this happen!

    ...and here’s a good tracker: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth

This will give you the live updates of the new free and old free agents.

  • You know in all this talk of who is out there in FA I almost forgot about those guys that made the team so great last year. I know he's still under contract but the Bears should extend Forte's contract and pay him more than the lame $400k theyre paying him now. Its an insult to a guy who has performed quite well with such a crappy o-line

  • All's quiet in the western front, mid-western that is.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing, though it's making me antsy. It could just mean that the Bears are making a play for the big time ballers, which still haven't committed.

Which big names are still available for the Bears?

OT J Bushrod (NO). Saints can't resign ALL their Oline, can they?
OT Tyson Clabo (Atl) Oh please, bebe jebus
OT Jared Gaither (Rav) How many tackles do the Ravs need?

G C Nicks (NO) top 5 guard anyone?
G H Dahl (Atl) Clabo or Dahl, Falcons, will take either
G D Joseph (TB) Bucs have too much money

Keep in mind that there are a shit load of other "2nd tier" players that would prob start over our guys like Willie Colon, Matt Light, D Colledge, Leonard Davis, S Ohara...

  • In reply to 4ever85:

85, read up a couple spots...

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I guess my post is a summary version lol

    Who I would like?

It's hard to determine which Olineman is better like Bushrod v Clabo, or Nicks v Dahl - at that point, it might just be splitting hairs, so I would just trust Tice's advice, but I would love

    T Clabo
    G Nicks

    DT Membane
    LB Durant

    WR Plax

I think we can realistically sign all of them with $37 mil in the warchest, although those Tackles might be pricey. We can restructure contracts and trim some fat later.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Is he any good anyhow? I didn't catch many Saints games last year, but assume if he's protecting Brees in a throw first offense that he's decent. However, I've read some other bears bloggers bitching that Bushrod's another Omiyale....

  • Bob LeGere says Roach Clip and his agent had concalls with 3 teams other than the Bears today.

  • In reply to gpldan:

We already designated Roach a sp teamer, back up LB. While I like him as a good insurance plan, if he wants too much, good luck on some crappy team Roach. We're prob gonna sign Durant anyhow.

  • Mannnnnnnnn..........am I glad we got some football going on. Did anyone sign manning? If he goes we may need help at safety........lol Seriously wondering if Harris can play at a high level anymore..........Go Bears !!!!!

  • Dick or no dick Doc? Waiting for Docs news......dick dock dick dock dick dock.........lolololololololol...................go bears!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Not me. Scouts honor.

  • All you Rice fans are now gonna have to watch SeaChicken games - he's officially in Seattle now. Seattle making some moves: Rice, Gallery, Travis Jackson...that last one might get them into the Luck sweepstakes.

At least Rice is out of the NFCN.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    4 years, $40 mil, $18 mil guaranteed.

That means that whatever WRs are still left will be cheaper than that.

  • I just get the feeling like our brass is sitting back waitin too long, not being aggressive enough. We were 1 game away and 2 positions filled from being in the superbowl with a 13-3 record. How can Angelo fuck this up? If we don't fill the O line need, pick up a fucking real WR and do it soon we will miss this opportunity.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    With you Johnny.

Still hopeful (like the kid who wants a bike SO badly for XMas but doesn't get it) If tomorrow comes and goes without much movement from Halas, especially on the oline front... we'll know that Angelo has fucked us once again.

  • heard we were looking at either Willie Colon or an OT from the Saints. pull the trigger, JA.

  • I like this list 85:

    • OT Tyson Clabo (Atl)
    • G C Nicks (NO)
    • G H Dahl (Atl)

    • I don’t give a shit about anything else to be honest.

FQ, welcome back playa... fairweather playa.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I would be more than happy with that list MB.

But, we NEED to put pressure on Aaron Rodgers, and Membane would def help. I think we were ranked 21st in sacks last year - that's not good enough, esp on a Dscheme predicated on pressure, and esp with Rodgers in our division.

A lot of fans assume Melton, Izzy, will progress, (and who really knows about Peaea or if one of them gets injured), but I'd hedge my bets with Membane.

But Membane is more of a want than a need. Oline is a need need need need need.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

I get it 85. If we need a dt I want ray Edwards. He's a badass and I like stealing from rivals

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Edwards had 8 sacks playing next to Mullett
Izzy had 8 sacks playing next to Rodger raper

I think that's kind of a wash. And Edwards is going to be gone from Minny, like everyone else. The rats are leaving the snowed in ship.

I'd be very interested in seeing if AP is going to stick around.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

  • Kinda forgot that Maynard held for Gould all this time. Sure hope we don't lose out there, although you cannot carry someone to be a holder for place kicking.

My man Robbie needs a steady man setting the ball, so he still kicks ass and I don't have to get a new jersey to represent at local sports bars.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

If Maynard starts running a few routes and throwing some passes, and returning some kicks, maybe we can keep him and not get Brad Smith.

    He punts, to boot.

  • Don't worry guys, Thursday was always going to be the day to watch.
I have faith we're going to do some serious upgrading to the OL, particularly the interior.
I'm not sold on us making any big splashs in regards to WR, unless there is someone floating around out there that has a background in Martz' system. I just don't see it happening.
I must say that I find Seattle's quarterback situation hilarious - three career backups that were supposed to be the heir-apparent on their teams, but failed miserably when given the opportunity. Now three losers enter, one man leads them to a second place finish in football's worst division, another holds a clipboard, and the other gets traded for Al Davis' bunion in 2012.

  • I think I read a PFT article that indicated that Jerry Angelo makes his decisions based on the drunken observations of his sisters 4 year old son Harrison. The article said they spike this kids sippy cup with Apple juice and vodka and then just let him angrily bob in and out of consciousness and while he grunts and points to pictures of various players and names on roster sheets.

Living in Thailand, at least I've got a 50% chance they'll be lesbians.

Is Angela scoping out other receivers before he pulls the trigger on Roy Williams? He's got the Martz connection going for him. Or is he trying to net Malcom Floyd? I guess tomorrow is the big day - it better be ....

  • NFL Network crew in disbelief that the Bears haven't made a play for a big WR. Talking James Jones or Braylon Edwards since Rice and the other big names are gone.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Wisconsin Jones and the Last-Minute-Labor-Deal Crusade.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

James Jones makes sense, and dropping a SB TD might motivate him, not to mention depleting Cheeseheads of a weapon.

Edwards has same drawback as Jones - Drops passes, except that he's not as good as a route runner and has some character issues.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Depriving a rival of a weapon is always sweet, which is why it's strange we let Sidney Rice go to the Seahawks. No way he was pumped about going there to catch passes from T-Jack! Maximum spend with bonuses was 8 mill a year .... makes me think Angela really is going to ignore the position and make do with camp bodies. Frakker.

Lions are keeping Drew stanton. Good, they'll need him.

Willie Colon has been contacted by several teams, which I hope means us. Just for the name.

    And this is football journalism?

Fox news is currently interviewing Chuck Norris and asking him what he thinks we/you should do about the government. "We form the government and we bend them to our will." Yeah, right Chuck. Go back to non-contact sports and your natural hair color.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

    No, it's mere douchebaggery,

  • I personally hate Braylon Edwards. He drops so many passes and does more and more stupid shit off the field. We almost drafted that dude, and took Cedric instead. Braylon is basically a slightly less belligerent version of Cedric.

  • i promised myself i wouldn't get mad no matter how bad Angelo plows his greasy penis into this opportunity but the thought of missing out on acutal game changers is starting to annoy me. Literally ANY offensive linemen would be an upgrade. I guess it will make me feel better when Peppers rips off Rodgers arm and offers it up to Paea as a Tongan sacrifice of virility.

Rocky Mackintosh, where art thou? No character/injury/productive problems, he's just a 4-3 LB who got let go because the Skins switched to a 3-4. A little older (28), but still solid.

  • This site is testing my patience. Doc, congrats on #3. If you want a girl, and go for #4, you have to back out a bit before the explosion.
Doc, good band at Highway 99 tomorrow in Seattle. Hamilton Loomis. Texas blues with some NO funk mixed in. You will not be disappointed.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Thanks for the heads up, mang. I'll be jamming with a buddy tomorrow so I might actually be able to make that happen. Any idea what the cover might be?

  • For the guys talking about a naked Helen Mirren, check out "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. Artsy Fartsy movie but very good. Michael Gambon plays the thief and he's really a Bad Mofo. Helen is totally buck numerous times. Highly recommended.

Doc, congrats on the news. Sorry it's not a girl but healthy is all that matters. Rode up Highwood Pass the other day. 60K one way. About 55k uphill (about 3,500-4,000 feet of elevation gain). Took me forever but the ride back down was awesome. Doing Ride Idaho in about 10 days.

Durant's off the table (to the fucking Lions). I'm guessing we end up with Pisa and Roach again. I'm hoping we end up with with some studs but knowing JA we'll get some great bargains. Fuckity, Fuck, Fuck.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Normally Pisa and Roach are a great combo but Pisa had another surgery this offseason and i think this last one was worse than they thought it was. In June the coaches were pumped to have him back and by July they realized that his knee may be fucked. He would have to sit out the pre-season most likely. The wear and tear would take it's toll by the end of the season. i love that dude but they brought him back from that 2009 knee injury way too soon and ultimately fucked his chance to play healthy ever again.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Didn't know that about Pisa. That sucks wang. He's hurt a lot but I liked his no BS approach. I should have figured something like that because Lovie always liked him and things have been too quiet concerning Pisa. Oh well.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Pisa was solid last year. I don't mind keeping him on another year one bit. Depending on what happens this year, it might be time to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on LB, but Pisa does not make us weak in my opinion.

Great bargains are only great if you spend the cap savings on stars. We benefit a lot from the new labor deal because it will force JA to spend 95% of the cap. He's been pretty good about spending these past couple of years, but the new rules should keep him in check.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Totally agree. I was being sarcastic about JA and the bargains.

If we get at least 2 OL that are major improvements (3 would be nice), a solid WR (I've given up any hope of landing a stud WR), a DL that can apply some pressure, and some help in the back end, I'd be thrilled. Of course, with JA in charge you know this isn't going to happen.

I'm hoping we get AA, Olin, Roach and Graham back. I wouldn't mind seeing Rashied come back for ST's. I keep reading we're going after the punter from the Jets (Weatherford). The last 2 years Maynard has struggled. The stuff he said about Toub was pretty disappointing but I still think Toub is a great ST's coach.

  • Where are the day 2 summary articles? I can't keep up. Alright, the Bears have been quiet but there are some nice options off the radar I mentioned before.

Let's see Jonathan Joseph (CB) is still available and I believe the Lions are the only other team I've heard about that wants him. I'd say that makes him important to get because the Lions are absolutely scary on D these days.

Also, with Rice gone, Malcolm Floyd (WR) will start making headlines. I'm hoping that we're making headlines with him.

I think we could pick up both of those guys and still have the cap space to contend for Matt Light. The only big contract outside of those three is Forte, and he's not a FA this year, so we have room to maneuver. Olin will want a few million, but not huge cash.

I think McNabb is under-rated. He's going to make the Vikings a lot better, and they still have a lot of guys from when Favre was there. Detroit is a sleeping Lion (see how I did that) and one of these days Stafford is going to stay healthy and lead that offense to the playoffs. Green Bay just won the Superbowl with a bunch of young studs and a premier QB. And the Bears were the most serious challenge to GB and the other half of the NFC championship game. What division in the NFL is scarier than the NFC North right now?

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

agreed mang, the NFC North is going to have some tough entertaining games.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

Definately agree. We need those two guys to solidify this team...We will get Oline help andOlin will be here by FRi

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

I don't know mang, McNabb looked absolutely brutal in the pro bowl. Cromartie will probably go to the Raiders, but I'd love to see us pick up a good corner on top of a WR and an OT. I think we already have the guards on our bench. Floyd would be amazing, I just think Angela is a tool and won't target anyone.

  • going to bed, what will tomorrow bring? 3rd day of FootballChristmasHannukah starts in 6 minutes.

  • It's great to be talking football again. You guys got me through the lockout with a lot of laughs. Thanks.

  • The Bears are shopping Girly Thor according to Brad Biggs

  • In reply to Joseph:

    here we go again...

I wouldn't mind him being gone. Too inconsistent.

Kellen Davis and even Des Clark (remember him?) I'd be more than happy with.

I just wonder what we can get for him? We used a 1st rounder on him, so whatever we get will be way less of a value.

    Thanks Jerry.

  • I don't get the Girly Thor trade rumors. I'm assuming Des is gone. I like Davis but ManofMoolah is a glorified down OL. That means we went from 4 TE's to 1 + another who is no offensive threat.

I'm liking Martz less all the time (and I wasn't that crazy about him to start with). Olsen did everything they asked of him. He improved his blocking and never complained about the lack of touches (even though both he and Cutler were frustrated by it). For being such a genius, I thought Martz was a stubborn jackass last year that almost got our franchise QB killed trying to prove how smart and innovative he is. If Lovie and Tice didn't threaten him with great bodily harm during the bye week, that fat fucker would have kept on calling for 5-7 step drops while ignoring the best weapon on the team (Forte). If Martz is so fucking smart, find out a way to use Olsen's skills. Not to mention, we gave ManofMoolah 2-3 times more money than any other team would have. All because Tubby has a woody for the Big OL. ManofMoolah is the Jason McKie of TE's.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

We should keep Olsen. He and K. Davis are the best end-zone threats we have.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Totally agree. Makes no sense to me.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

Definitely. Olsen needs to pick his game up and stop disappearing, but between him and KD we have some nice redzone targets there. I'd love to see them in double TE sets a lot more .... his blocking did improve.

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

    of course.

I remember ppl saying I was crazy when I wanted Vick after prison. Now he's a pro-bowler

I remember ppl saying I was crazy for wanting Fat Albert.. Now the Genius got him.

I remember saying I was crazy for wanting Plax when he was doing time, not solid organizations like the Steelers and Giants are competing for his services...

WTF! If I were general manager of the Bears, we now would have had Vick, Fat Albert, Plax

Not to mention Clabo, Dahl, and I would have made some sort of a move for Brandon Marshall, like a 1st round pick, Hanie, Olson to Mia.

    Fucken retards!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    you're hired!!!

Jerry pack your shit and get the FUCK out of Halas

  • In reply to 4ever85:

You can be my GM, no fkn problem mang.

The Patriots are savvy bastards. As always. Fifth round pick, jebus.

Wouldn't really like to see Olsen leave and take his 6'5 with him, but if we got a second rounder, then we'd still have KD and Dez. Olsen doesn't seem to seperate very well either. Clearly he feels like he's a #1 target and probably asked to be traded, vaya con dios mang. I'd just straight cut fat bastard on principle.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

You can't have principles, Irish, to win. Bilicheat has 3 superbowls, perenial SB contenders, dozens of draft picks plus perhaps the best owner and qb

Mike Brown has "principles" and the Bungles!

K Davis is 6'7. Beat that! lol

  • Washington traded DT Albert Haynesworth to the New England Patriots for a fifth-round pick in 2013.

    I wish this was us...come on guys..damn..

  • In reply to Artoo:

The upside would be tremendous but 2 coaches that aren't known for having trouble with players had trouble with him (Fisher and Shanahan). Lots of red flags there. Not to mention the big contract. I don't think you have to be an altar boy but you can't be a total butt head either. The Pats didn't invest much with the draft pick but they are on the hook for a pretty hefty salary. Since I hate the Pats, I hope it blows up on them.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Everyone keeps thinking Albert would get paid a lot, but they don't realize that the Skins already paid the majority of the contract and bonus. He only would have cost 5 mil, and if he turns out bad, then cut his ass and it doesn't count against our cap next year, only a 5th round pick in 2014 (I think we can live without an Enderle).

    Belichick and Kraft aren't dunces.

  • OK, I blew off steam.. Hopefully Fat Albert regresses and costs the Pats a 5th round pick two years from now, which probably won't matter cuz they are prob gonna have three 1st round picks again.

  • Personally, IF the Bears can get quality compensation for Girly then I say farewell. Kellen Davis has much better hands, better blocker, can jump, break tackles. He may not be as fast but Olsen will command more money and may be a distraction he if doesn't get paid. Plus he hasn't broken a tacle in 4 years.

  • In reply to Joseph:

Exactly Joseph. Couldn't have said it better myself. I was already hearing grumblings about Olsen and resigning, and he most likely would have wanted more than what he's worth. The more I see of K Davis, the more I like. We already have Knox and Hester to keep the safeties deep. Cutler needs more of a safety valve TE to chuck it to.

  • I have to disagree boys, letting go of Olsen would be a huge mistake since, in customary Bears fashion, we didn't use him correctly.

Martz ran a piss poor offense the first half of the year, mis-used Taylor, Forte, Olsen, etc and now we are going to shop Olsen around? It had better be as part of a sick deal that lands us a key offensive lineman because to get draft picks for him would be fucking tragic. We need to make moves NOW that allow us to win NOW.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    Agreed, Johnny.

  • it's just the absolute mismanagment of a team that could so easily go deep in the playoffs that makes me sad.

  • You guys know my well documented dislike of olsen... well, not dislike, just think the dude is a magician. You can't only show up in 1/3 of games as a TE. You're supposed to be the emergency safety valve for the QB. Not disappear.

I'm with you on Martz Johnny and Dave, the fat punk better step the fuck up and call a great plan this year. Hey Martz, I'll make it easy on you:

    1. No 7 step drops.... ever.
    2. Pass - 50%
    3. Run - 50%

There better be some BIG fucking action today guys... I'm starting to get nervous watching all the dudes (some we want) go off the boards... and to our rivals too.

Jerry you fucktard, you better be planning a fucking full-scale invasion today you clown. Buckle up boys, here we go!

Oh and congrats Doc. My best friend has 4 (FOUR!) boys. They wanted a girl too last time… my advice to you, get snipped. That X isn’t in the cards mang, and you def. don’t want to end up with your own basketball team. Brutal, evey time I think I have it tough, I think of him... it's like a mixture of a circus and a prison riot at his house every day.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Nah mang, get *her* snipped. You don't geld a good stallion.

What did I miss? First job interview in 6 months today! Did we ship Hanie to Miami? That would suck. Imagine Olsen, Hanie, Orton and Brandon Marshall at MIA.

Yeah I never understood how Olsen would disappear like that MB, he'd be on the field and he's 6'5 - what happened? Was he just scratched out of plays? Was it Martz?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

I don't know Irish. We were trying to figure it out in an earlier Blog - is it Olsen, or Martz? I'm now leaning more toward Olsen. He didn't produce with ANY OC - you're a math guy - Olsen was the only Konstant.

If we do trade him, we'd be lucky to get a 4rth. Rumors were that we were trying to trade Olsen to the Pats during the draft and they didn't do it (even though they had how many picks?). Now the Pats trade a 5th for Fat Boy, so that's how little they thought of Olsen. I might be joining that bandwagon.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

ooops, I meant doc is a math guy.

Pompei reckons our new center is already on the roster. Linnenkohl. Hilgenberg was undrafted, who knowsnot?

  • Jenkins looks like he is gonna get snatched up by the Redskins.

I knew it was a done deal when they included a dinner with Abe Froman #thesausagekingofchicago

  • Do some of you guys know how much money the bears have to work with in the free agency, and how much of it do you think Forte will take?

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

    roughly $37 mil.

But keep in mind we must have a 90 man roster, thus why we brought in 26 UFDAs.

Then we gotta resign some of our own FAs, Olin, Adams, Graham, Manning, Roach, Pisa, Davis... (but we'll see)

Then hopefully we sign some big FAs. A solid LT goes for about 40-50 mil, WR about the same, though by now we're prob more in the 30-mil tier

AND we're gonna have to resign Forte (Olsen if he's not traded), prob for DeAngelo Williams money, 5yr 40 mil range.

We also have to sign our top Draft picks, Carimi, Paea, Conte, though that's not gonna be as expensive as in past years, but now those contracts seemed to be fully guaranteed (I don't how I feel about that)

So that money can get sapped pretty quickly, but it's all in how they structure the contracts.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Thx, for the overview. I usually don’t get hooked on the offseason. But the longer I keep following the Bears the more I get drawn in to the whole "show". I`m loving all the drama =). can’t wait for the Bears to start making their moves. I can feel that football is close people.

  • What do you think we are shopping Olsen for? Draft picks or personnel?

  • I don't get it.
The Jets supposedly have cap issues yet they are still able to re-sign Santonio Holmes AND are also the front-runners to land Nnamdi Asomugha? How does THAT add up?

    Is this a fair analogy?

The Bears, to date, are rummaging thru the $5 DVD bin at Wal-Mart while everyone else is shopping for Blu-Rays.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

perfect analogy Al. But what's new with Jerry. He went ape shit 2 years in a row... let's see how today ends up.

Jerry is a $.99 Store regular.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

The Jets are restructuring player contracts to have more room this year. Sanchez has basically said he'd take a pay cut. Nnamdi has hinted that he too would play for less money in NY (cuz of his acting interests).

The Jets have approx 10 mil to spend. Nnamdi's could get about 15mil/year from Texans or Eagles, but may play for 11ish for Jets.

What the Jets are doing is what the Vikes did with Favre. ALL IN. Fuck the future. Vikes didn't win, now look at them. It's a gamble, and the Ryans are gambling men. Cowgirls are in the same boat.

The Bears on the other hand are "cautious" "conservative" "cheap" - in the eye of the beholder.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

It's not so much the bargain hunting that's wrong, but the result.

I'd rather buy a DVD of "Braveheart" than a Blue-Ray of "Leprechaun 3".

The problem is, Angelo has horrible judgment and will buy like the dvd box set of Leprechaun.

  • Sean Jensen reports that Rashied Davis is off to Detroit.

  • babin gone to the eagles.

Here's another one for you Al. The reports say there is a huge flood coming. Everyone else is evacuating and raiding the stores, clearing the shelves of much needed supplies. Jerry is the fucking hillbilly sittin’ on his porch swing with a reed in his mouth refusing to leave and sayin’, ‘we’re all set here. We’re just fine. We don’t need no supplies.’

Can we wake the giant already? Can we make some fucking moves already please? By the time we’re ready to make moves, there won’t be any supplies left!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

As much as I relish an opportunity to kick Jerry in the balls, I may have to keep my steel toe boots off this time.

I am not sure that losing Kreutz would be bad. They said he anchored a recovering line last year. Hmmm. Films from our Boy Roy show a washed up center who seemed at time out of sync with Cutler and prone to getting run over.

His loss may force others like Cookie (ok, not cookie) to step up and lead.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I get that GP, and I am somewhat with you but olin... my problem is this...

will jerry do what it takes to replace him with someone good? There are literally tons of good OLinemen still out there, but will jerry get it done? I don't mind losing him… unless he's not replaced and jerry tries to replace him with some unknown fucking UDFA.

As the clock ticks and no news comes today... I get more and more nervous that this is going to be a typical jerry clusterfuck of a fuck up. Fuck.

  • I want to take the opportunity to address all those Texans fans down in swampland, who went fucking apeshit when Mario Williams was selected ahead of Reggie Bush. Who went fucking apeshit when the Texans passed on Vince Young.

    That is all.

  • Everyone is saying re-signing Olin is the #1 priority. But, what if the niners make some ludicrous offer for 5 yrs and too many millions? I have a feeling that this is the yr Olin shows he just too old to be effective. Yes, he's the locker room leader, but that only goes too far. Sometimes you need to get younger at a position no matter how much you like a guy.

  • In reply to Crown:

As far as I'm concerned O.K.'s ALREADY shown he's too old to be effective. He's been living on reputation for at least 3 seasons.

  • I got tired of watching Olin getting knocked down with one minor push and blocking air last year. I think this town is overrating him at this juncture in his career. Bring in four or five young centers and let them duke it out.

  • I'm getting tired of the current deluge of inanity from the NFL writers who state that a Bears trade of Olson would be the reason for Angelo to consider shopping for a WR.

  • Would we trade for Wes Welker?

  • more oline coming off the board without a "C" on their helmets.

  • Bears signs TE Matt Spaeth. A blocking TE, so now we rly need a good WR. I stilll think we are going for Roy Williams

  • In reply to Crown:

    Per Sean Jensen twitter
"With Brandon Manumaleuna already on the roster, this signing of Matt Spaeth could be a solution toward fixing o-line..."

I read that as ManofMoolah being pushed onto the OL. If so, I have to be concerned since he had problems blocking linebackers let alone lining up across from, oh.. say... Suh.

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

You have *got* to be kidding me. Unless, of course, this means that Manomoolah and Dez are both gone.
