Bears Trade Greg Olsen to the Carolina Panthers, Eye Roy Williams

Bears Trade Greg Olsen to the Carolina Panthers, Eye Roy Williams

I'm a white guy from New Jersey and the Bears had a white guy from New Jersey playing tight end for them.  But as per a report from Brad Biggs in the Chicago Tribune, the Bears shipped Greg Olsen to Carolina tonight.  Thus ends a tenure for the first-round draft pick that never reached its perhaps unfair expectations.

The trading of Olsen solidifies the importance of Mike Martz currently at Halas Hall and means only one of Jerry Angelo's first-round picks remains on the roster.  (This might be considered unfair as Angelo gave two of those picks away for the starting quarterback.)

How do we  see Olsen's time with the Bears?

Side notes:

Olin Kreutz is said to be targeting Friday to make his decision between staying in Chicago or leaving for San Francisco.

The Bears are targeting cut wide receiver Roy Williams.  This would be a very sound move.

  • First to say... About time.

  • Why won't my post , post!!!?

  • And so it begins. its a shame we lost one of our only big endzone targets that knows the system. But im hoping for good things to come. ONE TIME!

  • One more FA OT off the boards... (per Twitter)

    JasonLaCanfora Jason La Canfora
T Willie Colon resigns with the Steelers - 5 years, $29 million

With Olson gone, that leaves only one first round pick Jerry's made on the team - Williams.
Gabe doesn't count because he hasn't signed yet. And he'd only make it two, so it really doesn't it make it any less sucky.

  • Just got another pointy stick in the eye regarding Colon (per Twitter)

    caplannfl Adam Caplan
    by vxmcclure23
Colon was going to visit the Bears tomorrow

A day late, and 23 million dollars short I guess.

  • I don't like this at all. We trade a guy with demonstrated dedication to the franchise and all that can be said is they are after some head case that's never done anything?

My take on Olsen is that he was steadily improving and in general an asset to the team.

*sigh* This is starting to make me think of Ron Turner - Martz is apparently no better at making use of the talent he has.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

The more I think about this, the more it pisses me off. But I guess I should wait to see who the player included in the deal is. If it is some fucking project...

  • I must admit, I think Olsen had a long way to go to reach his full potential....but I thought he'd get there and would make our offense better along the way. What are we getting in return? I like Jay Cutler, but I'll admit that he's surly and can be a bit sullen and immature. Why in the hell would you give away arguably his best friend on the team and the guy he has the most chemistry with on offense? The fact that Angelo continues to sit on the sideline during this unprecedented free agency period, while we're $35 FUCKING MILLION UNDER THE FUCKING CAP, is beyond me. No Bushrod....No Rice....No DE to go on the other side of Pep.....This window is closing not with a bang, but with a fucking whimper.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

And worse *atop all that*, is they are not taking care of the best offensive weapon on the team - Matt Forte.

Absurd. Hopefully, when I get back from choral practice something good will have happened. Last rehearsal before we perform Mozart's Requiem. Good stuff.

  • At least we didn't low-ball Colon (there's a joke in there somewhere)

    per Twitter:

    EdBouchette Ed Bouchette
    by caplannfl
    #steelers Colon gets $29 M over 5 years, says #bears offered $3 M more. "I could not see leaving."

  • this point, what it the damn cap floor? Are we going to spend anything? This reeks of right after the Super Bowl loss. The (lack of) brain trust on this team thinks everything is perfect...why do anything? We need not spend like drunken sailers like Washington, but we need not just sit on the dock of the bay and watch the tide roll in...

  • Any theories on who we will get in the Olsen trade? Just looking at the depth chart I do not see any stars besides Steve Smith. Any O-linemen that stand out? You think Jerry would be dumb enough to trade Olsen for Shockey and a 6th rounder? Nothing would surprise me after the last few days.

  • In the immortal words of Mr. T "My prediction...pain."
Martz will get his way with more 7 step drops with blocking tight ends. Trouble is the O-Line is still seriously depleted. Cutler will be taken out in a body bag.

  • Martz must be a hypnotist because this trade is dumb. Spent the cap on real blocking linemen not on trying to make a TE a blocker. You lose a threat and Olsen is definitely a threat. Offense scores points and a blocking TE doesn't score points. Angelo and crew had better show us the money (via several new WR agents)tomorrow!!!!

  • If we get Malcom Floyd, a guard tomorrow and manage to get a quality CB from the Panthers I will be somewhat happy. I am reserving my judgement until the player involved in the trade is announced.

  • the player involved in the trade is not important at this point. Martz is obviously running the show. Looks like Roy Williams is the man as he played for both Martz and our receiver coach before. Anyone know Williams speed these days?

  • In reply to CanadianBear:

Here are some highlights from last year for Williams.

  • In reply to Vicp71:

thanks vic. If Williams is the man (likely) I hope he returns to form from Detroit days because only so-so in Dallas. At least the learning curve should be short.

    Bear Down

  • If we sign Roy Williams is he going to guarantee a Bears loss before every game?

  • As I've mentioned before, I live in Dallas. If we trade for Roy "I proposed to a woman by sending her a $75K ring in the fucking mail, and she said NO and kept the fucking thing" Williams I will lose what little respect I have for our front office. This guy is a 100% ME guy, doesn't believe in tipping, cried when Dez Bryant told him to suck a dick when he tried to haze the rook by making him carry his pads during camp last goes on and on. He's a straight up punk bitch with no work ethic. Malcolm Floyd, that would work. Ray Edwards opposite Pep, that would work. Leonard Davis on the right side to block for Matty, that would be awesome. Sean Locklear on the left side, that would be epic. At least get me Randy Moss, I guarantee that guy catches 70 balls for 15 TD's and 1100 yards this year. Put that shit on the board. Roy Williams.........Fuck that dude.

Seifert seems to think we’ll get oline done tomorrow and over the weekend. If we don’t, we’re fucked.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Clabo back to to the Falcons. Watch Blalock and Dahl follow suit.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Do the Falcons have enough money to keep both? I think we're going to make a hard move for Dahl, maybe even overpay, even though I know "overpay" is not in Jerry's vocab.

  • I'll keep this short -
    F*ck Roy Williams.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    And then some, Posse.

  • This has not been a good day of FootballChristmasHannukah. I liked the signing of Spaeth and the release of Manu but then they went and pissed all over it by releasing our only big scoring threat. I mean, Hester would be the biggest threat of all time but instead of running Desean Jackson routes with him we throw him wide receiver screens to see if he can get up after getting tackleraped by some OLB.
When i wake up on day 4 i want 2 OL from Atlanta and someone that gives us a little more firepower on Offense. Please sign our own guys too Jerry you penis.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

well...maybe not all time but you get my point. FUCKING UTILIZE YOUR PERSONNEL PROPERLY. Olsen is a 65 to 70 catch tight end and you should split his ass out and put him in the slot sometimes. I mean, Carolina should do that.

  • God damn, I leave for a few hours, we trade Peekaboo Olsen, sing Spaeth, pursue Roy, let go of Manu, and Forte may hold out! WTF?

I'm not hoping much for Olsen, but if we somehow managed to get C Kalil from them THATS our new franchise C for the next decade.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

Agreed. Kalil would be a great addition. The Atlanta OL(there are 2 and both are outstanding), Matt Light, Leonard Davis or Deuce Letui would all be much needed additions. I still think we have to grab either Moss or Floyd. I just don't understand how, with only 6 FUCKING MONTHS TO PLAN EXACTLY WHO YOU WANT TO TARGET TO ADD TO YOUR TEAM......we haven't done a thing yet of importance. By the way..........Fuck Roy Williams.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

Nope, I knew I got my hopes up for nothing. We got a 3rd for Olsen, which is actually pretty good (considering that last year teams only wanted to give us a fifth). A panthers 3rd is basically a late 2nd.

    Thanks Cam!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    Recap/update of FAs and Trades.

  • I am ok with the trade. Yes, we used Olsen the wrong way and we def missed out on Clark by letting Manu play. That being said let's see what the panthers give him because I do not think he lived up to his rookie contract or that he will become a great tight end. He is just faster than some tight ends with ok blocking.. that being the case. Our new tightend will do wonders.... he is tough, smart, and can play. The man is 6'7, so stop saying we lost our endzone threat because we still have Davis and this guy is big. Idc who we get at wideout, give me someone who can block and run people over. Atl guard is still out there and we need a new center... Kretuz is going for the money and I can't blame him.

  • In reply to Artoo:

Nobody, Artoo. Still ok with it?

  • In reply to Artoo:

Oh, and our new "big threat" has caught 36 passes in four years.

  • By the way, THERE IS NO PLAYER in the Olsen trade according to Seifert. Only a fucking 3rd round pick.

Mike Martz is starting to look like Ron Turner II.

  • I don't like this one bit. Sigh... Another wasted draft pick that will go spend his days with someone else. This is gonna be awesome when we see Greg Olsen being a fuckin beast on ESPN highlights. Money coulda bought us good players, we didn't have to trade our Best WR.

  • I don't know what would be more out of character, us going after Roy or the Pats getting OchoCInco....

  • Saw this posted elsewhere, and just loved it:

"Bears traded a mid-20's potential pro-bowler for a washed up, middle aged coach who's ego pushed him out of 3 other organizations.
Sounds like a win to me."

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    It's looking like truth...

  • Wait a 3rd round pick? O mothafucka! I fucken hate Angelo more and more every passin second.

  • A 3rd round pick.......which Angelo will fuck return for our QB's best friend and our best red zone option. Do we have the balls to try and grab James Jones from the pack? I'm done for the night, this shit is driving me crazy.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

Jones rumored to be going to the Vikings.

  • i will keep fucking posting until they take down that fucking notification that i'm posting too quickly.

Angelo should use the 3rd rounder as part of a deal NOW.

  • Patriots are getting it done. A team that believes no talent is to much talent, always lookin to be better. The Bear opposite.

  • fucking truth

  • +1

  • Jenkins back to the Packers? another swing and miss Angelo.

  • I disliked girly thor’s lack of consistency as much as anyone (and think davis and Dez can fill in just as well), but are you fucking serious angelo? A dude who does show up big in every 3rd game (I am big enough to admit)…for a single fucking 3rd round pick… that angelo will piss away on some Italian whiteboy DB?

You are a fucking mental midget you cunt Angelo. I hate you and I hope you die on your way out of halas when you're finally fired in 2021 after you've totally destroyed our beloved bears for way waaaaay too long.

Fuck man, really? I had hope. I honestly thought we’d come out again and bust some ass in FA this year…. Maybe I wouldn’t get all of my 3 linemen, but I thought at least we’d get a couple big names and SOME oline help. This is getting fucking ridiculous. Fucken a man. If he doesn’t go apeshit tomorrow, we. Are. Fucked.

So… who’s with me on fucking angelo now? Fuck man.

one of you positive guys, please save me from my dispair.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    x 10000000000

  • Greg Olsen - exhibit A in "you never miss it until it's gone."

I bitched about him day and night... but when I found out we were getting a draft pick!? Something we have never proven to be all too skilled at utilizing? Oy. Vey.

We better flip that 3rd rounder into a trade for something we actually need. This season.

We lose DA. We lose GO. What's next? Trade Earl for another white safety? Jerry must be real pissed Jay dumped his lady, because we're getting rid of all his targets...

I prayed to trade Thor last year, in hopes that Kellen would show us what a real TE looked like... well, KD - here's your chance. Don't make me look like a schmuck.

Fuck Roy Williams. Just read we may want Sims-Walker.

By the way, follow Your Boy Roy on twitter for all the up to date Bears news...

Fuck Jerry. Fuck Ruskell. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

    And fuck Harry Potter.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

fuuuuuuck harry potter indeed willie... oh yeah, and Jerry angelo too... right in the face willie, right in his stupid face.

  • Sorry MB, but Angelo just traded all of my positive comments for a 2013 6th round pick.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

Awsome Matty... hopefully there'll be a 5'7" 185 lb DB/kick returner/puter on the board at that spot! Can't wait!

  • He'll be there, MB, and he'll run a 4.2 40 and turn into a special teams juggernaut.......for somebody else because fucking Angelo will pass him up and take a kicker from Middle Tennessee State with my positive comment 6th round selection. Angelo has made us all "Mr. Irrelevant".

  • I think we all gotta calm down about the Olsen trade. We're LUCKY we go a 3rd for him. TEs just aren't that highly valued. Here's how I think it went down.

    1) Martz system not conducive for a pass catching WR

    2) Martz gave it a try, Olsen caught 40 passes and 5 td which is a record "high" in his system

    3) Cutler getting killed, and Olsen ain't helping. Once he trotts out there with his goldie locks, we're basically telling the D "Ok pass coming" or "inept run"

    4) Olsen in contract year and would prob demand top 5 TE money. Were we really willing to pay that for a guy who would catch 40 passes a year and can't run block?

    5) They, like us have eyes, and prob said, "Hey, that 6'7 Kellen Davis kid looks pretty good"

Once the cat came out of the bag that we were dumping Olsen (big mistake, and I'm sure RosenDouche did that) other teams knew we HAD to dump Olsen off. Luckily, Panthers need weapons for their rook franchise QB, and we got a 3rd.

We can go get Zach Miller right now and we wouldn't skip a beat. We can trade that 3rd to one of the 5 promising TEs the pats have. We can use that 3rd to sweeten up a trade or move up the draft next year.

Angelo is too inept to do anything like that, but it's a possibility.

On a side note, Cutler lost a fiance and best friend in a matter of weeks lol

  • In reply to 4ever85:

My memory is far from perfect, but as I recall Olsen threw the key block on the longest running play last season.

  • haugh doing his best to talk me off the ledge?,0,3528281.column

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I do agree with Haugh (can't believe that) esp with resigning Kreutz.

I think we now need to resign Kreutz and even overpay him just for the sake of the locker room (which the 9ers are really more interested in Kreutz - for setting a tone and grooming their young oline).

Forte leaking out that he might hold out at this time is stupid. It creates even more turmoil in an already tumultuous time. His agent prob put him up to it. A surprisingly selfish move on his part. Did he really think he wasn't gonna get paid? I almost feel like pulling a Mike Brown signing FA Bradshaw, not paying Forte, then trading him or Franchising him next year. How would you like them apples Forte?

    Luckily, I'm not Mike Brown.

  • I think Numb Nuts is a great GM. Until Carimi signs he has the same number of #1 draft picks on the team as the previous GM (from 10 years ago). Let's see, is #54 better than Cookie? Just asking!

When the Wizard leaves (Tubby), Numb Nuts will have an offensive roster that fits no other OC on the planet. Wonderful!

    Is that helping MB?

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Yeah, thanks a bunch canada. I'll ask my wife to remove all sharp objects from my direct vicinity for the next few days.

Btw canada, got 25 in this morning after my swim. Man that cervelo is a beast. Feels like it's looking up at me going... dude, are you serious ... hall ass sally!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Is that P3 comfortable? I've never had a time trial bike so I don't know. I have 2 race bikes that have shorter wheelbases and are a little more upright than my touring bikes. Love the quick handling of the race bikes but love the touring bikes for long rides. I've got steel bikes, aluminum bikes and a titanium bike with a straight blade carbon fiber fork. Love the titanium frame but the carbon fiber fork is a bit harsh. All of my bikes have spoked wheels. What do you have on the P3?

You'd laugh if you saw my bikes. My brother-in-law's friend referred to them as a bike museum. I've got a a replica '50's cruiser with a springer fork, a bike from the 70's, 80's, 3 from the 90's and the newest is from 2000. I almost popped for a fixie yesterday that was reduced from $750 to $600. I'm pretty sure my wife would have had a litter of kittens if I came home with it.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Ha, excellent. You should have bought it home just to see the kittens.

I guess comfortable is all relative. I can promise you it’s not anything close to your touring bikes. Yeah, the carbon is a trip. My whole rig with look pedals, aero bars, and a carbon double bottle system on the back of my seat post is 19 LBS (without the 2 full bottles of course). It’s a pretty stiff ride, but not jarring at all. If is super responsive and feels like it wants to jump out from under you when you start to really torque and go fast, in a good way. I personally don’t find the aero position comfortable for long periods of time. The one thing that’s different than my old rig is these aero bars don’t let you squeeze your hands underneath in the front of the bars, so you can either be in aero, on the outside bullhorns, of put your hands flat on the elbow pads of the aeros… no normal front handlebar position… which I like(d) when just cruising. Oh well, small price. Also, I don’t do rides over 40 mi. Just can’t, my grundle (taint) just can’t hang. I usually push as hard and fast as I can for the whole ride, so thinking about doing a century scares the hell out of me.

If you ever come down here, we’ll go for a ride.

  • now that i've had time to reflect on the past couple of days I have decided that Jerry is an idiot. However, I will force the vomit back down my throat as we wait for key signings to take place for our beloved Bears.
IF Angelo doesn't address 2 offensive line positions including re-signing Kreutz I just can't see us making it to the post season.
IF Angelo doesn't bring in 1 WR target that will give Cutler another scoring threat I just can't see us making it to the post season.

There are NFC teams making moves this offseason looking to get better. The Bears aren't addressing their most pressing concerns. Podlesh and Spaeth were decent pickups but those 2 positions didn't keep us from the superbowl last year now did they?

Let's keep the faith even though Jerry makes it very difficult to be a Bears fan sometimes. Maybe he will surprise us somehow. Please god make him surprise us.

  • wow...this new rookie wage scale is shocking.

Nick Fairley (14rth overall) signed for 4 years, $10 mil.

That means Carimi, Paea and Conte should be dirt cheap! Common Angelo, you fucker. Did you hear that we must spend 90% of our cap or goes to other teams to spend?

  • So, I don't recall us drafting any college guys with major knee problems... and considering that's our M.O. - is that why we have to pick up Sims-Walker? With Tommie gone, is our knee-doctor going to get bored?

I don't know MSW's exact height, but I don't think hes the 6'4"+ I'm looking for... If the Bears don't get me a Malcom Floyd-ish WR with height, save all the wasted smurf WR money and spend it on OLine (not Olin).

If we continue to think of 6'2" as tall (see: Aromashodu), I'll fucking FLIP.

  • In reply to Who is Willie Gault:

ha ha...knee surgeons need jobs too!

One (perhaps positive depending on who) of the positive consequences of the Olsen trade is that it kinda forces Angelo to get a WR. Remember, b4 the trade, all reports were that the brass was ok with our WRs (or Brad Smith).

Now, we're hearing rumors of Roy and SIms. I still think they're trying to pull off some major trade or signing, but that's just my gut feeling.

  • bedtime, i give up

  • wow, walterfootball all over it.

    Vince Young to Eagles

Davin Joseph, yes, another G off the board, signs with with Bucs. But damn, for $53 mil! for a good (not great) guard, are you kidding me? I'm telling you, Brewsters Millions, just giving it away. If ur in the Tampa Area, apply for water boy - they're paying $100,000, full benefits

This move by them is NOT good cuz it may make Dahl want more money, and that would be ridicules. It's like when the Skins and Traiders fuck it up for everyone else by grossly overpaying.

  • you know you're jonesing for any sort of hope when you are watching Andy Fantuz highlight films on youtube.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

i mean he has his own cereal. You can't suck that bad if you have you're own cereal.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    I thought I was bad.

  • Well.

Before I'd wiped the sleep out of my eyes I stumbled over to the laptop and logged in to DBB to see who we'd got. Not, straight to the source ... only to see we'd lost somebody. Not somebody I was ever a huge fan of it had to be said - in fact I was one of the guys burning his effigy back in the day when he was a polarizing force on this very blog and Jefe called him the 'key to our offense'. But accumulating draft picks - to be wasted in the future by the arch-c**t Angela - when we need to win NOW, just beggars belief. All I can say is that 3rd rounder for Olsen had better be a pot sweetner for some TALL receiver or a couple a big OL signing.

I wasn't expecting anything other than a complete clusterfuck from Angela in the off-season. That's what he does. I'd be happier with absolutely any member of this blog being our GM, literally a random choice would lessen the load from these shoulders - for the simple reason it would be impossible to do any worse. And still we have to reserve judgement until midnight Friday because UFAs can only be signed today in any case. But it ain't all good.

The cornerstone of our OL remains unsigned when that should have been the first signature inked. After deciding we didn't need the best running back in the draft at the end of the second round, now Matt Forte might be sitting out.

Cutty's best friend is gone. How much longer before he sees what Jimmy Mac saw, and caused him to believe that the Bears would never win another superbowl until they changed their owners. How long before he accepts they won't have a line to block for him anytime soon, or guys to throw it to who are visible behind the linebackers? How much more of Martz can he take - the guy who hung him out to dry on national tv before he got here and changed his tune? We have the Babylon of front offices in the NFL and he must know that. Would we even get a first round pick for Cutler now? I don't know that we would. Unless we get a Lombardi with him at the helm, we got hosed in the Orton trade.

I was hoping for Olsen to go back to Miami in some deal for Marshall. Hope springs eternal, and Friday has life left in it yet. Are you hearing us Angela?

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

If K Davis doesn't work out, then we can bitch about Olsen, but not much.

I mean, under Martz' system, 30 rec for a TE is about right. It doesn't take Antonio Gates to catch 30 recs, and we can use that money to resign Forte and hopefully make a big FA/Trade splash.

  • Daniel Manning a Texan according to Shaffer

  • In reply to 4ever85:

"The safety agreed to a four-year, $20 million contact with the Houston Texans Thursday night, his agent Russel Hicks confirmed. He will receive $9 million guaranteed.

Manning received a three-year, $6 million offer from the Bears, an offer which didn't appeal to him. Now he'll join newly signed cornerback Johnathan Joseph in the Texans secondary."

  • On a more positive note, Kellen Davis gets more looks this year, and somebody might have asked the Panthers what's up with Jamar Williams. Beason just got paid.

  • The Hulk (That's my new name 4 Paea) has signed according to Chic Trib.

"In other late Bears news, second-round pick DT Stephen Paea from Oregon State tweeted "I'm officially a Bear. I wanna thank the lord for everything that he had done for me and my poor family."

  • Spaeth won 2006's John Mackey Award as college football's best tight end. I did not know that. 6'7. So we got rid of a TE with question marks, got rid of a fat bastard, but gained a bigger dude and a third round pick.

Shame we didn't get Brad Smith, but if the Bears want a kick returner then Johnny Knox can do it.

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

or i guess we could put the greatest return man in the history of the game back there. i don't know, i'm just throwing ideas out there.

  • From the trib :

"Olsen was looking for a long-term extension and wanted to get it here. Now, he will team up with another former University of Miami star in Jeremy Shockey in an offense that is expected to rely heavily on the run with rookie quarterback Cam Newton. The Panthers visit Soldier Field on Oct. 2."

    - His numbers go down when you look at it like that.

"They also have closed the book on the 2007 draft class unless they can re-sign cornerback Corey Graham, one of nine picks that year."

    - I actually hope Graham goes now, just to put yet another nail in Angela's coffin - it looks like an iron maiden now ...

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

not sure about that Irish. I mean, I don't know what can get Angelo fired. Maybe we can all pitch in and hire a really hot girl to seduce him and fool him into sexting his penis to her. Seemed to retire Favre.

Olsen's not going to the pro-bowl anytime soon, I can tell you that. I don't know how effective he's going to be in their power running game. Olsen will catch just enough passes for them to say "man, he's go potential" like we've been saying for the last 4 years.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

One thing to keep in mind, the OC's during Girly Thor's time with the Bears. RT was one of the worst OC's in the league. All of the regulars on the blog could predict 85-90% of the plays before they were run. Tubby can't figure out how to use a TE, which says a lot more about Tubby than Girly Thor. It will be interesting to see how it works out for GT.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I'm not entirely sold on that argument Canada. I know we've had some horrible OCs and mediocre QBs, but I'm just tired of hearing "He's progressing" - he's been "progressing" in painful increments for 4 years now.

He can now "progress" with Cam Newton. I think it's better for both of us. I'm still gonna root for him - he seems like a cool guy - but we gotta win the SB, and for better or worse, he just no longer fits the system.

  • Somebody wake Jerry up! $30 million in cap room that HAS to be spent!! Braylon Edwards is still out there! Just make an effort!

  • In reply to BigMack:

Totally agree! I get they don't want to set the market for players but we're desperate for OL, WR and DL. Instead we get a new punter (which we needed), a new TE (which we didn't need) and traded one of our best offensive players. Way to go Numb Nuts. Spend some money already!

  • In reply to BigMack:

It's 42 million which makes it worse. Everyone is improving their team right now, we're just releasing vets and pissing people off.

Well color me pink, we got a receiver. Knox can go back to returning kicks. Good.

  • Espn is saying Roy Williams is a bear.

Hope he doesn't promise any victories.

  • Hope he doesn't try to do the deal thru the mail either... or maybe he should.

Hey the good news is, as this video clearly shows, that he can tear our secondary a new one. Hopefully he can get enough time in with them before the real games start to help them.

    Yes, it's half full.

  • None of us will be crying about this if we also happend to land a capable T and G, as well as james jones. I guess most of us will be crying then.

  • Looks like someone got a break on thier night job and came back to the only blog that matters when shit got all crazy. (me)

Talk to you all soon as I'm sure there'll be a new thread in the morning.

  • I like the signing as long as he produces and keeps his mouth shut. I doubt both can happen tho..

I like the WR's on paper. Knox, Bennett, Fanutzack, Hester, RW.

This is gonna be a cluster fuck who am I kidding!

  • Yo, ben! working on the graveyard! So is football, apparently!

I'm neither excited nor disappointed in Roy Williams. He won't act like a bitch around Martz and our men, so I'm not worried about that.

However, will he produce? Well, he's big, so there you go.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

I have very low expectations of Roy Williams.

  • Ok.. for all those killing me about Orton..

Come on..Ochco went for a 5th round pick. Olsen has not ever been to a probowl and we were lucky as hell to get a 3 round for him.

Would rather have us pay him top tight end money for mediocre production or get something out of his ass?

So what our new tightend doesn't have stats like Olsen, Olsen won't ever go to a probowl because he can't block and last time I checked , Tightends did both.

I rather over pay for Forte, some decent reciever, or two great oline than waste money on Olsen... He hasn't produced and won;t.

Remember the Jamar Williams trade for Harris? That worked out for the best and this one will too.. The only way we get screwed is if Olsen bulks up to like 277 or he becomes a great wideout. The man is not a tightend.

Jay also got over losing his first bff... Marshal, thus, he will get over this one real quick when he sees the new toy he has actuallys blocks.

  • In reply to Artoo:

    Sorry, I meant Olsen

  • In reply to Artoo:

JW for Chris Harris? Nah mang, I'd rather have a good young linebacker than an aging run-stopper who's lost in coverage. Especially right now, because we have THREE linebackers on the roster.

  • We got solid, not sexy UDFAs and FAs, now it's time to resign Kreutz, Adams, Graham, get the big time Gaurd Dahl, DT Membane, and bargain LT Light or G Leonard Davis.

  • RW should know the system he was under the wizard in Detroit.

  • In reply to BigMack:

    Bingo McD sandwich guy:

RW is a bear because Martz saw something in him at DET. And frankly, so did I. As a Lion, RW had skillz. But then the Lions got CJ who is a much shinier new toy.

  • In reply to BigMack:

    Roy Williams

    82-catch, 1,310-yard 2006 campaign under Martz.

6'3, 215, 29 yrs old hooking up with a young stud QB who likes to fling it to big WRs and his old coach who supposedly works miracles with qbs and wrs and got the most out of him.

Bonus: he's familiar with the plays, so that would be a huge advantage in this shortened preseason. Hell, he prob knows the routes better than Hester and Knox.

Bonus Bonus: He's not gonna cost us $50 mil like Holmes.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

At best, "at best", he's going to be a Moose Redux. Annoying most of the time, will produce decent numbers year one, and then bitch and moan his way out of town rather quickly.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

This seems the much more likely scenario to me.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

    This is from another blog:

"I have seen alot of Lions fans making jokes about the Roy Williams signing by Chicago. I just want to compare his 4 full seasons in Detroit with Megatrons 4 seasons:

    Roy Williams ('04-'07): 55 games; 245 receptions; 3652 yds; 14.9 ypc; 28 TD; 165 first downs (67.3%); 5 fumbles (4 lost)

    Calvin Johnson ('07-'10): 60 games; 270 receptions; 4191 yds; 15.5 ypc; 33 TD; 193 first downs (71.5%); 7 fumbles (4 lost)

Those stats are very comparable. Roy was a very talented WR with some maturity issues. I also hope that some of his issues in Dallas had to do with the fact that despite how much Dallas gave up for him, they never seemed to commit to him. Dallas never really seemed to consistently keep him involved in their offense."

You have to remember, that this is Mike "If you don't block for me, ur gone" Martz. He has ZERO tolerance for WRs shenanigans. More importantly, Roy respects both Martz and the WR coach who worked with him in college.

OK - if that doesn't get you guys off the ledge, nothing will lol

  • In reply to 4ever85:

or just watch this (thx ben)

Did any of our receivers do that last year? Are they even capable of that?

  • In reply to 4ever85:

know what I saw... the hitman blowing his shit UP!! Hahaha.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

yah, that was bad ass. Why'd we ever put Harris in FS? FS don't bring down the hammer like that!

  • In reply to 4ever85:

RW was lost amongst great offensive weapons and Rohomo. Put it like this - he's way better than Knox, Hester and Rashied Davis and approaches being a manly-sized receiver if not actually being a beastly one. Sign Floyd, put Knox on KR/PR and we're good to go. AT receiver.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

MBP - call me today, i've got to make some moves in my E-Trade account and i need your help.

  • Now we know what the Bears were thinking.

Bennett, Williams on the outside, Knox-Hester in the slot, with 6'7 270 pound Spaeth helping out either Webb or Carimi.

I'd sleep a lot better with a Dahl on that line.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    He's all I'm asking for.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

What up Skippy? I hope you mean Kellen Davis in at TE with Webb buried on the bench until ... no ... just buried on the bench and then cut.

  • I’m kind of sad to see Olsen go, but he was going to be was Chicago what Roy Williams was in Dallas; round pegs in square holes.

  • in not was, sorry not enough coffee...

  • thought you guys would find this an interesting read:

Please sign dahl and another G or T. Jury is out on RW, let's see if he can pull his shit together. I would have much preferred floyd (as you all know) or Jones.... but two more GOOD olinemen are critical. Maybe throw jenkins in there for good measure.

  • I can't keep up with everything that's happening, but here are a few thoughts.

Olsen - I think this is us being victimized by the lockout a little bit. Olsen wasn't happy here, we weren't all that happy with him, he had a decent year last year, basically he was a prime trade prospect. It would have made a lot of sense to take the Panther's third round pick this year for Olsen and both teams probably would have made that trade. Problem is, there were no trades in the draft this year, so we trade afterwards and have to wait until 2012 to use the pick. This hurts the value of the trade, but Olsen's contract only has the year left, it was now or never. I would have liked to see a center in the deal (tackles are too expensive), but maybe that's what we get in the draft.

Roy Williams - I like Malcom Floyd better, but we save cap space this way. The question remains: who are we saving it for? I think Williams has a decent shot here... Almost all WRs are unpredictable when they move cities.

O-line - The Bears actually made the winning bid for Colon, but he didn't want to leave the Steelers. I have to wonder if we're having the same issues with Matt Light. I think we're saving the cap space for a left tackle, but its really tough to get a left tackle anywhere but the draft. No matter how you look at it, even if you like Webb and Carimi, we still only have two solid tackles and they both project on the right side.

Defensive Tackle - Someone who understands defensive linemen better than me. Can you please explain who is currently on our team and which of them is playing 3-technique versus nose tackle? I have a sinking feeling that we are still undersigned on the line and there's a lot of work left to do on Defense while we're trying to get that O-line fixed as well.

Forte - We need to take care of him, but I imagine he's where we plan to spend extra money to reach the salary floor. If none of our big offers get picked up, we can make Forte happy with a front-loaded contract. If we make a splash with Matt Light or a big name on D, we can pay Forte on the back end.

  • In reply to NewBearInTown:

We don't have a guy who plays the 3-T. I guess they think Melton is new 3T since they got him to put on the weight .... Paea's a rookie and I smell a bust with that dude.

If they made a play for Colon then it spells out what I've felt all last season ... Webb sucks and Tice knows it. Omelette sucks. We have Carimi and that's it at tackle. CW got moved to Guard for some reason but he's not a guard ... how much blow are the Bears' staff doing? We need a left tackle and fast.

Forte is going to piss us off now. We shoulda had Leshoure and then Forte would STFU. I still can't believe we let a banger like ML slip through our fingers ....

  • Flozel just got released, anyone interested... or am I just getting desperate?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

last call - the bartender's ringing the bell, and that old hag at the end of the bar is beginning to look decent.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    Good one

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Whenever i hear the name Flozel, i think of a blowjob. Is that weird? Am i weird?

bear down boys, there is hope for us yet if we get 2 linemen. AA will get re-signed and once we lock up OLB we will be good to go. I am a little hesitant to carry 2 white safeties though. That is unprecedented whiteness in the defensive backfield.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

unprecedented.... is that even legal? Someone pull out the NFL rulebook.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Well, he was born in Chicago. But he's 36 years old.

I suppose if we get him cheap it might be okay. At least he's an NFC veteran.

Or maybe you're just desperate, MB.

  • In reply to SC Dave:

damn, 36... didn't know he was that old. Naw, he's pace reincarnate... except a mean version. I am just desperate.

  • Paea, Conte officially Bears.

    Carimi only rook unsigned.

I guess we're gonna sign our Oline en masse.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

*Finally* a piece of good news...

  • wait, what if we got Williams for a song (relatively speaking) and we pick up Sims Walker too?

Fear boners? or at the very least "Cause For Concern Boners"?

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

    "Cause For Concern Boners"

    Hee hee

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Stop teasing Waffle! MSW and Williams would be awesome. Malcom Floyd + RW = awesom-er squared. But c'est la vie.

We have two white safeties?? WTF! Isn't there some wrinkle whereby you sign Conte and Steltz bomber is automatically cut?

Love Lombardi calling out Jamie Dukes for calling Vince Young 'Vee Why' on air and then Tom Waddle cuts across both of 'em and says "I caught 173 passes in the NFL and they called me T-Dub !" Mwah!

    > They were all awesome catches though, Tom, we miss ya!
