Bears Replace Rashied Davis By Adding Sam Hurd

Bears Replace Rashied Davis By Adding Sam Hurd

For those of you who criticized the lack of plan from the Bears front office, it might be time to zip it up.  The Chicago Bears added Roy Williams to their receiving corps early this morning, providing Jay Cutler that big red zone target he's lacked in his two seasons with the club.  They followed that signing by adding the Cowboys Sam Hurd, who'll provide depth at the receiver spot but mostly replace Rashied Davis as a special teams stalwart.  Mike Sims-Walker might still be on the radar but I expect the Bears to now turn their attention to defensive tackle and offensive line.

Stay tuned.

  • NIU Alum! Welcome addition, please add o-line next and they'll be almost set!

  • Dear Jeff, could you please identifies who "those" are?

  • BD, if you go on Twitter, you'll lose your mind. I am on there to follow the reporters and it's nothing but Bears fans complaining.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

It's almost as bad on ESPN NFCN blog.

There is one major difference, literally, between Davis and Hurd. Hurd is 6'3 210.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

Guilty as charged (but i consider it more a "voicing my concern" than actually complaining)

  • I keep reading that SF is making an offer Olin can't refuse and that the Rams are seeking out Dahl.

  • In reply to 4ever85:

    Link?

  • Those… is me.

And you can’t be fucking serious Jeff. I hope this is just you trying to be a writer/journalist and stir the pot. You call adding fucking Roy Williams and sam hurd a fucking great plan? A strong strategy?

I get fucking horse saying this, honestly man. I am either fucking crazy or you are fucking blind (and yes, I mean all those ‘fuckings’ because it’s become insanely frustrating going over and over and over this patently evident point)… it doesn’t matter if you have Jerry rice, steve Largent and moss/85/TO in their prime catching balls for you… you can’t throw the fucking ball from your back… with a concussion!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we do not get at LEAST two very good olinemen today or tomorrow to sure up the sieve that’s been the worst fucking oline in the NFL for 3 (THREE!) years running, IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER. WHO’S. THERE. TO. CATCH. THE. BALL.

Cutler will not make it to mid-season without a BIG, STRONG, DEEP, oline strategy that’s executed completely successfully THIS WEEK. I am so sick of all the excuses, of all the disctractions from this one single critical point. The solution to our non-superbowl problems like in only one damn place… the oline. Period.

It’s though-processes like this column that’s made halas hall a fucking nightmare head office for the last 5 years. Yeah, yeah, we almost made it… blah blah… we almost beat the pack. Etc.. etc..

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'm saving this MB. Every time Roy Williams makes a catch of note this season, I'm going to re-print it.

They haven't addressed o-line yet. Look around, no one has. The market is just being established. They offered 3 mil more for Colon than the Steelers but Willie stayed home. They're on it.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

Fair enough, Jeff, so long as MB gets to reprint yours every time Williams makes a drop of note.

I agree with MB. The offensive line must be fixed, and if that doesn't happen than I really cannot see how anyone can call the front office strategy anything but a failure.

But as you say there is much maneuvering to be done so hope remains.

  • In reply to Jeff Hughes:

Ok, that’s fine. I personally don’t care about every catch as long as it all adds up to us beating the packers 2 (or more) times, us taking the North again, and us going to the SB. You can win all of the battles, as long as I get to win the war… all of our war.
Oh, and be sure not to glaze over this sentence:
If we do not get at LEAST two very good olinemen today or tomorrow to sure up the sieve that’s been the worst fucking oline in the NFL for 3 (THREE!) years running, IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER. WHO’S. THERE. TO. CATCH. THE. BALL.”
So yes, if they get dahl and another GOOD olinemen I’ll be fine. And yeah, trying to get someone and actually getting them is the difference between what happens in NE and what happens in Jerry’s office. Pleanty of people THINK they can run a business/blog/etc… successfully, few actually do.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Jeff shouldn't get all the blame for stirring the pot. To be truthful, I knew from reading recent posts that a blogger or two would take the "those" comments to heart. All in good fun. The outcome off all the eventual moves will probably end up somewhere in between both extreme opinions. Lets face it though, our D will be just as good if not better than last year and if the Bears can bump the offensive production up to say, 14th or 10th in the league then I don't see why we can't take the title and stick it up Green Bays keeshter.

  • In reply to BigDaddy:

been here for 2 1/2 years screaming the sam thing DB... jeff knows my deal by now. We've needed to address the oline for 4 years and it's never been done even though Jerry's supposed to be the oline genius.

Say what you want, but the basic fact (not perspective) is that our window for success if closing quickly and the weak link on this team has been empirically documented with real numbers.

And to your post, yeah... all we need is the same amount of injury luck as last year, which is to say basically no critical player injured for more than one game. If that, instead of fixing critical gaps, is what we're hinging our SB run on, we're going to be in trouble.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

'Those', is also me. MB, mang, deep breaths, the OL signings are coming (they'd better be), and I guess Olin is trying to get a 7 year deal!

And no way is Sam Hurd special teams fodder Jeff, the dude is very capable and has great character and work ethic. I put up some links up on the last thread. Because of T.O. and Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton

I am loving that Kellen will be our #1 TE and we actually have some serious competition for WR spots

  • In reply to IrishSweetness:

That should read .... 'Because of T.O. and Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton ... he got lost on the depth chart, but he's a quality receiver and a quality person - liked him ever since I saw him on Hard Knocks'

  • I'm real busy at work and will contribute more soon. But, a major concern I have with Williams besides his massive ego and shaky character is the fact he's played in domes his whole career. I can't see this guy being effective (let alone trying) when Bear weather hits. Let's see how many drops he has and runs to the sideline to put on his down coat when we get down to the teens and below zero.

  • In reply to Crown:

domes for home games but point taken

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Domes for Holmes: A movement for more BJs for Hispanic Latin King Prisoners.

  • In reply to Crown:

One thing about Hurd I noticed in an interview (I'm expecting even more from him than I am from Williams as my new fave receiver) - he hates heat and domes, and loves grass, the kind you play on, as opposed to the kind Santonio Holmes likes. Can't believe the Jets just paid Cheech ten million lids.

  • there goes Edwards: http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/42408/falcons-add-explosive-element

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    you stole my thunder

  • tick tock jerry.... tick tock

  • Ray Edwards to the Falcons:

  • A tweet from Jeff Dickerson:
Danieal Manning to Houston. Just got off phone with Danieal, Bears never reached out to him in FA. JD

    Cold Blooded!
(in Chappelle's voice as Rick James)

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

Texans paid out of their ass for him though and will regret it.
    4yrs 20 million 9 guaranteed.

  • In reply to Waffle 2.0:

it was reported that they offered him a deal during the season, but it wasnt NEAR what he got from Houston.

  • Shits getting crazy dude. Angelo Put the team on your back do! I agree with MB on the online issue. We do need that line solidify. Idk I guess it is to young in FA to start pressing the panic button.

  • Adams will stay

    skjensen Sean Jensen
BREAKING: DT Anthony Adams agrees to terms with the #Bears on a deal, according to a source. It's believed to be for two years.

  • In reply to Sarcastiholic:

That's more good news. I hope we get that Okoye guy too.

  • boom! AA in the house

  • I'm with you Jeff. You get the big market players out of the way and work your way towards those secondary markets. I would look for some defensive players (CB and D-line) then they'll start signing the O-line.

And why is everyone silent on the Forte issue? I think the organization should back one of their most productive players and pay him what he's worth. Make the guy happy and I bet he'll give you one hell of a season. I think the fans should get behind him and push the organization to renegotiate his contract because if he holds out for 2-3 games it could mean season over.

  • Having Adams stay is good for the Bears and good for the locker room right now.
Kreutz has to do what's in the best interest of his family but he has to be honest with himself about the kind of play he can deliver and therefore how much money he should make.
    ...in a perfect world.

  • I'm silent on Forte because I know we'll give him his raise when the guys who aren't currently under contract, get signed. He'll get his.

  • I don’t think Roy is a NR 1 WR, but he is a player that can be valuable player for the bears. I want a OT and A gard, and a solid WR. Then we can look at forte`s contract, but we must address our needs first in my opinion. We got some holes to fill.

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

With the weapons we have on offense we ndon't need that true #1 that carries a city on his shoulders like AJ.

We have two big TEs, two decent pass-catching RBs, a samoan FB, two very decent ex-cowboys at 6'3, Earl Bennett, and speed and hands in Hester ... not to mention a big mobile QB with a cannon for an arm.

We are a left tackle and potentially a center short of what's required to expedite the usage of that weaponry however.

I guess no-one is kicking up about Forte because the dude is going nowhere.

  • skjensen Sean Jensen
#Bears agree to terms on a contract with first round pick Gabe Carimi, according to league source. Entire rookie class under contract.

  • Williams reteams with Coach Martz, who put him to good use in Detroit, and coach Drake, who was with him in college.

Don't know if that helps but it can't hurt.

  • I agree with Mr. Pompeii.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Yup Al. Way to take away Cutty's number 1 safety valve for another Steltz-like pick. What a fuckin waste.

  • Adam Schefter
Sam Bradford's going to be happy: Rams reached agreement with former Falcons guard Harvey Dahl on a four-year deal.

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

    ouch

  • In reply to Norwegian Bear:

    DAMMIT.

  • Exactly Doc. Forte will get paid by the Bears. If he wants to win, he should steer clear while we fill the roster. Roach is in camp with us and Jew Bear is in the bag. Now, we need to send a box of spam to each of Paella's family members. Martz must give the best wrap around ever.

  • Has anyone noticed that the Bears front office are making the moves just about every Bear fan has been screaming at the top of their lungs for well nigh 2 years now. Jerry, let me give you a hint son, hire a consultant and save us the grief.

  • Fucking Texas Western Abalene Culinary Institute comment by the Wafflemaker is the best of the FA period.

  • 2 year deal for Anthony Adams. Just got of phone with AA. Story shortly on ESPNChicago.com. JD

  • By the way, Hurd is a special teams beast. Makes me somewhat OK with losing Daniella.

  • In reply to Crown:

Hurd is a very good receiver :

  • I already know what they are going to say....

We like the group we got. We need to build continuity on offense and we will continue to look to improve.

Meaning we tried to get some people but we didn't get them sooo we have to make due.

  • Carimi signed according to the Trib!

  • This is a fuckin joke...Roy Williams an Sam Hurd is our ansswer to all the grat WR in Free agency? this is bullshit and this Org is Bullshit. Where the hell is Malcom Floyd or sims walker? Much younger and better potential. I could just puke...WE WILL SUCK THIS YEAR!!
