Bears Third Round Selection: Chris Conte

chris-conte.jpg
I know almost nothing about this kid, a safety out of California.  Below are copy and pasted from elsewhere.

Positives: (From SidelineScouting.com) Has a very
good frame, above-average height and good bulk... Has a strong upper-body, put
up 18 bench reps at the combine... Had a very good senior season, recorded 72
tackles, an interception and two forced fumbles as a starter... Has solid range
when in a two-deep look, is adequate with deep-half responsibilities... Solid
leaping ability, can hold his own in jump-ball situations... Is an adequate
wrap-up tackler, not a big hitter, but does well breaking down in space... Has
good agility and change-of-direction ability for his size.

Negatives: (From SI.com)
Lacks ball skills in man coverage. Marginally productive until his senior
season.

My
Overall
:
I have no idea. Seems like another Craig Steltz
.

  • Special team player?

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    Daniel manning replacement.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Yup. Nice knowing you Manning. You shall be missed.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

What a lame pick, esp when Marcus Canon (T/G?) & more importantly, Clint Boling (G)available.

I think we picked this Conte kid cuz we didn't have a 4rth. He's a reach.

Manning must be gone. And Guard/WR might now be priority in FA.

PS. YOU NEED TO LET US KNOW WHEN A NEW THREAD IS CREATED BLOGFATHER. DOC, is that you?

Here I was fucking around in the round 2 thread!

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

Yup, I wanted Boling in the third. We had a penalty kick in the first round. An I-guess-so pick in the second, and a total screw-the-pooch moment in the third. We also managed to fk up the Baltimore Ravens and it's not even the fourth round yet. Not that we have a pick. Good grief.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

murph.... draft grade so far please.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Damn i wondered where everyone was last night. I wake up this a.m. and read the last two threads and see you me and waffle had our thing going back on the round two thread and the rest of the DBB world had moved on.
Draft grade, first 2 rounds I would say an A- if they live up to expectations. Third round I don't know, C-? If the Conte kid turns out to be a player great, if not hmmm. We got the 3rd best tackle in Chris Williams and we see how thats worked out so far. Time will tell MB, but I like the first 2 pick for sure>

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Steltz 2.oh no! I have no idea about this guy but after doing a little research, Fuck Me! Pringles was a 3rd and this guy doesn't look like he has anything going on compared to him. Dare I say Fuck Me, again. Way to screw the pooch JA. Now we wait 60 some picks for his specialty, late round gems. I can hardly wait. Can I get a Fuck Me??

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

man, thought I was the only one not sniffing koolaid today Canada.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

You have to think like a fool to know who a fool is gonna pick. It's like those movies where someone puts themselves in the mind of a serial killer, only you have to think like a man who was hit in the frontal lobe with a tack hammer.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

    Grade? C- at best.

Way too, waaaaaaay tooooooo few OL

  • In reply to Mastodon:

1 is MOST certainly too few Dave... even if his is the Bear Jew!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    he

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Angela could have drafted this guy in the 5th round. Why Angela? Why? Two great picks and then this! That Cannon kid for the OL should have been the pick. He is a beast! Were is Steltz? YOu could have signed him again instead of wasting a pick here. Damn it, not happy! Fuuuuuuuuuuck!

Let's hope he's another Gary Fencik

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    +1

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Vikings picks Saturday: 4th round (9th pick in round); 5th (8th and 19th); 6th (7th and 35th); 7th (13th and 35th).

  • In reply to Joseph:

They'll all need to end up starters to bother us next year. Number's up, AP.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Interesting to see the whole story: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/26521/play-by-play-of-bears-trade-confusion

    Bushleague Angelo.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Eat a bag of dicks... love that one Canada. Agree. Ok, here's my tome:

Ok, so I know I've been a pain in the ass after The Bear Jew guys, but I'm calling this a typical JA draft.

Day 1 was a gift from God, no-brainer. In fact, it was even more than that

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I can't believe MB is more cynical than me.

For one, after the Glitch - nobody else is going to work with Angelo the rest of the draft, so trading up for Franklin is just wishful thinking and shouldn't be part of your analysis.

To look at it realistically, you have to say who you would have taken at the #2 pick. It basically comes down to Moffit - who ended up early 3 - or stick with Paea. Paea is a 3-technique guy, a samoan Melton. If Dusty D had kept his tissues from shredding, we probably would have grabbed Moffit. But we're fighting to sign A Adams, Butter is history and the Farve killer is only a DE. Toe played heavy minutes last year out of need.

Paea is an explosion beast. He's not Suh, but the fucker can do 49 reps at 225. I am 6'3 and 245 and I can do maybe 5 now, maybe 10 in my prime. I did 9 once. He did 49!!!!! He's a beast. I can't even imagine doing that.

He could really disrupt the middle, and man, we need that. Lack is old, we need DTs to get another year out of him. If Guards get to Lack, he's done.

3rd is a disaster. Cannonball was there, and we took Steltz 2. Visions of Steltz and this kid as Fencik and PLank. I don't think so.

If I was at the helm, I may have gone Moffit over Paea, but Maranelli would have choked me with his frail hands. I could have been talked into holding on for Cannon in 3.

We have to shit or get off the bot on Lance Louis. And I'm sure we may dip into FA for a guard. That's my take.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Hell they already worked with Angelo to trade up in the 2nd for Peah. Other teams don't give a shit what happened, if it's a good trade they will jump at it.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I hope you're right about Paea. THe knock on Louis and ASiata was experience. I'm not tearing up their tickets just yet. I am calling out Webb and Omelette. Webb played like the 7th round pick that he was. Big and slow. He ruined most games for me as I couldn't take my eyes off him and the hapless sloth he is in pass protection.

The puzzle of Shaffer remains. How does Tice grade him out #2 lineman and then he doesn't see the light of day? Had we grabbed Boling or the Fat Cannon I think we'd be looking at a pretty sweet draft so far. A leisurely LB pick in the 5th, and then a flier at WR.

Passing up on the best RB in the draft is a tough one to swallow though, especially when the dude goes to an up and coming rival. Picking that low in the first and you could have the cream at a position like RB ...?

Barry Cofield and Mebane from SEA are FA this year. The Saints picked up Shaun Rogers for 4 mill.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

31 other teams don't think Shaffer is the answer at Tackle.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Hub Arkush reiterating a common rumor that Cullen Jenkins will be a Chicago Bear this morning on the Score.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

    Mmmmm.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Still a lot of O-Line help out there, I hope Jerry doesn't screw it up and pick another 5'nothin midge who can't block angry lineman.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

And with the 160th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears select...

    Really? REALLY?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'm pretty sure Tice will want Bear Jew at RT, giving Webb a shot at protecting Cutler's backside. Does Webb have the footwork to do that? I saw some awful shit last year, but he got better.

We need a blocking FB, I would love to get the Jets John Connor or somebody like that. Olsen in the backfield makes baby Jesus cry.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    From above GP:

    - I would have taken moffit over Paea
    - The skins traded with us in 2, not buying that we couldn't have pulled off a trade to get franklin
    - Paea IS a monster in the gym GP, but what does that mean???? It doesn't mean shit on sundays. It doesn't translate
    - Again, I would have been ok trading up to get a DT that's a fucking house (like austin or bowers) in the middle, this guy is just short and strong, not a clogger. We needed a BJ raji, not another zorich
    - If we're going to get a FB (which I think is a waste in our scheme) then we should steal Khun from the fudge

  • In reply to MB30SD:

With you on Kuhn. Austin is a prick. Big trouble in the locker room with that fool. Now, trading up to get Phil Taylor and then drafting two OL in a row would have been boner-inducing for me. We play the Packers and the Lions 4 times next year, and their frontmen are big and nasty - anyone think our line is scary? Pep will have lost another step next season, ditto old man Izzy. Melton has an engine, Wooten could be anything(but is definitely the man who ended Brett Favre's Career!). But that doesn't sound all that scary. Fairley, Suh, Bosch. That's scary. I'd let Hanie play the Lions twice.

  • In reply to gpldan:

and what does Jerry say to the Ravens brass? FUCK YOU!!!!

    http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post/_/id/4670470/jerry-angelo-takes-blame-for-failed-trade

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears have declined to compensate the Baltimore Ravens for the botched first-round trade the two teams agreed to but that the Bears did not turn into the NFL, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell encouraged the Bears to surrender some type of draft compensation but when he declined to order them to do so, Chicago opted not to give the Ravens anything.

"The only thing I'm gonna say [is] they have rules when you do something wrong, not when you make mistakes," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said Friday. "A mistake was made, no rule was broken."

  • In reply to FQD1911:

The Ravens were looking for compensation for mental trauma, ultimately, right? What did they lose?

  • In reply to gpldan:

guys like this still out there getting picked up: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/draft-2011/players/53013.html

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB..FUCKSTICK isn't that smart to go out and get a O-lineman..he's got his one guy GC.

O yeah.."were all set" FUCKING DOUCHE!

  • In reply to gpldan:

The Terminator. Totally. Special Team Nightmare to boot. How about Herman Johnson as a blocking FB for Leshoure - I mean Forte ?

I'm feeling a lot of this Webb-to-LT thing is happening all too easily. Whoa Nelly! This dude should be flipping burgers, what's going on? Were we all watching different games? I need this explained to me for real. How does Webb go from being a human turnstiles at RT - and almost getting Cutler killed - to being a premier NFL LT ? The second highest paid position in the NFL, probably. He's a 7th round pick all said and done, played like it too. Pro bowlers get drafted at the other end. He's a bum until further notice and needs to ride the pine.

If Jerry shits the bed again and nothing is added to the OL then we need to start looking at the line getting quicker with what we have. I'd go ...

    LT Jew Bear
    LG Louis
    C Kreutz by default
    RG Asiata
    RT Shaffer

    FB Herman Fatboy
RB Leshoure, I mean Forte ...

    http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5968/player?r=1

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Who's the free agent Center though, MB? And the FA DT? I don't like what I hear about Paea's football brain, but we'll see how he pans out - we definitely needed a DT though. Where the clusterfuck happened was in rd 3. Boling or cannonball was there, and no way anyone was drafting this kid in rd 3. As there's no 4th rd pick I guess they like him a lot. LEshoure will be worth more down the line though than Paea. We picked a muffin instead of a stud. Probably. This guy is known for his muscles, not his football, and that pisses me off. I hope he's as good as they think he is.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

FUCK THE POSITIVE!!! MB I'm pissed on this draft...

  • In reply to MB30SD:

No doubt he fucked this up but there is no way we owe the Ravens a pick. Both teams got the player they wanted. No harm, no foul. Give Newsome credit for not wanting to go public with it. Biscuit acts like the spoiled, rich kid that he is.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Jerry lost me on this one.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    THIS one?

    How's the new gig FQ?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

thought he was going to pull Boling, but maybe not (he's still out there though). if they don't take an OL in the 4th, Jerry's gotta give it up.

new gig is tight. 1st week in (2 weeks training), but it sounds like the job's going to be fun (and stressful). bosses are cool, co-workers are cool...situation's lovely.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

don't think Jerry will do the right thing.

    Nice man. Congrats.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Didn't we give up our fourth to get Muscles?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

There was a draft special on our local Fox channel with Lou Canellis, Dan Jiggets, Tom Thayer, Jeff Joniak, etc. Their guest was Gabe Carimi. They showed some war room footage of Lovie, Angelo, Tice, etc. I've NEVER seen Lovie actually giddy like a school girl. Tice, laughing and smiling his ass off. I'm telling you. Lovie was on the phone with Carimi and he was genuinely happy. Genuinely. The Bears were not expecting this at all.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

    Nice.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

    ProfootballWeekly analysis:

29 (93) Chicago Bears: S Chris Conte, California

"With the high amount of collisions required at the safety position in Lovie Smith's preferred defense, GM Jerry Angelo seemingly must address the position every year. There's a chance Danieal Manning could depart, as well. Conte was a late riser who really impressed secondary coaches in the evaluation process. He plays like a poor man's John Lynch and elevated on draftboards in a weak safety class."

A poor man's John Lynch? Yeah, that's exactly what we need to keep up with all WRs. Jebus!

    Hope Conte proves us wrong.

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

John Lynch fucking killed people. Everyone knew Lynch killed people. I never heard Mike Maycock say:

I love this kid Conte out of California. He fucking kills people.

DISCLAIMER: I can't believe i'm about to say this

I'm concerned about getting rid of Manning and replacing him with Pringles and Steltz 2.0 and/or Bullocks.

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

Better Steltz 2.0 than Archuleta 2.0.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Archuleta was the man for a period of time. The time before he came to the Bears that is and was paired up with the band of misfit DB's. Steltz has always blown cock.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

When he was young and in St. Louis, yes.

As a Bear, he was the worst fucking safety I've ever seen.

Steltz at least has contributed on ST...

I am going to pretend for the purposes of this post about the spearing of Peanut in the ribs.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    (that it didn't happen).

Craig-bot has made some big plays over the years on ST...he just sucks as a defender.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

"Pink is the Pig" and DMT don't mix.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

And in their self-congratulatory fog, the rest of the draft will go by without the three more OL we need. Too late already, I fear.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    Bingo!

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    we'll get a free agent. i promise????

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    1. I am fucking flabbergasted that the 8th court voted 2-1 to stay the lockout. What an awful interpretation of the law. Talk about judge shopping, I hope those two enjoy their lifetime Super Bowl tickets.

    2. Conte was stupid. Cannon was sitting there. I cannot argue Paea vs. Moffitt, Paea is either Toeina++ or another Chris Zorich. Zorich looked great in the weightroom too, btw, but his frame was maxed out just like this kid and also had a real problem knowing where the hell the play was.

But his potential to play 3-tech is too large to take a pass on. Angelo had a DL boner, we all knew that.

I guess Manning is gone. Oh well. We are going to need waiver wire help at corner again. Tim Jennings is not the answer.

  • In reply to gpldan:

See, Jeff, I told you about Jennings

  • In reply to gpldan:

I totally missed the draft - did we have Moffit on the board? Cannonball and Boling were on the board in the third?

    Fuck.

    Me.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

And there's always Asomugha in FA, GP. Isn't Cromartie a FA? He was like a black hole for opposing QBs last year. A girl can dream.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Asomugha is going to be asking for a lot of money. Al Davis was just crazy for cutting him.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Wow, Carimi is a stud and the Bears actually drafted for need this year. See, there is a God.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    Where the hell you been?

  • In reply to iamndmurff:

Hey Murph. Have been on a sabbatical from da blog until there was actually something noteworthy to talk about. Missed some of you guys though. Ooohrah.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    :)

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

From what I've read the Bears aren't going to up the offer to Manning. If we play by the same rules as last year, we have the right to match all offers. Don't get the Conte pick at all but JA takes a Safety every year (just wish he'd pick a good one). Not unhappy with the first 2 picks. We'd better sign at least 2 OL in FA, along with a stud WR, a couple of LB's and another Corner.

Baltimore can go fuck themselves. They fucked the BiQueens a few years ago when they got jumped by 2 teams on draft day. They didn't even have the decency to apologize for that fiasco. Biscuit can sit and spin. Dragging the McCaskey's into this is beyond a low blow. I can't believe I'm defending both JA and McCaskey's but Biscuit is way off base here. If Goodell could have fucked the Bears he would have. Both Biscuit and Goodell can eat a bag of dicks. Bastards.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

As I see it, no rules were technically broken, and everybody got the player they wanted. So why should we pony up?

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    Exactly!

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Somebody passed God the crack pipe for round three it seems, Trac. That was out there. That was a doozer.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    TRAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

this says everything about JA..you are a stupid dipshit:

  • In reply to nicholsra:

    Welcome to our world.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

and as for the lock out...Corporate America wins again..until "We the People" start choosing like "We the People" corporatism will rules the nest.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Irish all you missed was JA firing up his clown car so he can drive his draftee's to Halas Hall. (exception GC)

  • In reply to gpldan:

    GP...+1 on the lock out

as for the draft 1 silver lining "The Glitch" as for the rest, typical fucking dip-shit JA...couldn't find his way out of a paper bag if his life depended on it. He had his D-Boner and went with it.

2012 year JC will have 40-50 sacks again..Cutty would of had a long and great career here but instead it will be short lived maybe five years and 1 concuss a year. Angelo your a bitch!

  • In reply to Mastodon:

I'm calling this a busted draft already. A fortunate first pick followed by disaster. The third pick and its implications just blow.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

No way to predict that yet Irish

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

  • In reply to Mastodon:

We'd have to sign him to trade him wouldn't we? Isn't he a free agent?

    Yep
