National Championship Game Thread

We don't do a lot of college football around here but there are a lot of professional-quality players in tonight's BCS National Championship Game. Auburn Tigers. Oregon Ducks. My reworking of the entire college football playoff system is available on the B-side. ("A must read" -Nobody)

Reworking the college football system is really quite easy and I believe
a college football playoff would eclipse March Madness and maybe the
Super Bowl as the most exciting and financially lucrative yearly event
in the sporting world.  Here's how it works.

Eight teams qualify for the tournament: the six champions of the
automatic qualifying leagues (ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, Pac 10,
SEC) and the two highest-ranked teams in the BCS Standings.  This year
that would have put TCU and Stanford in the tournament.

You then let the BCS establish the seedings and incorporate the bowl
games into the tournament.  The four big bowls (Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta) rotate.  One is the national title, two are the semi-final games and one is in the first round.

January 1, 2011
Noon: Auburn vs. UConn (Cotton Bowl)

3:30 pm: Oregon vs. Virginia Tech (Capital One Bowl)

7:00 pm: TCU vs. Oklahoma (Alamo Bowl)

10:30 pm: Stanford vs. Wisconsin (Fiesta Bowl - in the rotation)

January 8, 2011
4:30 pm: Auburn vs. Stanford (Orange Bowl)

8:00 pm: Oregon vs. TCU (Sugar Bowl)

Monday night January 17, 2011
8:37 pm: Auburn vs. Oregon (Rose Bowl)

We have extended the college football a whole week, one goddamn week, and created one of the great events in sports.  I can not understand how these bowl games would be beyond excited to reap the financial benefits.  Think of the TV contract.  Think of the office pool.  Think of the increased excitement in the conference championship games, as the winner gains entry to the tournament.  So frustrating...

  • First....

    Go ducks?

  • Till playoffs are put in college. I will never have a college team. Great idea jeff. Btw when can we post our next three people?

  • Friday when I post the Saturday Show. same format as the picks.

  • There are a lot of problems with the NCAAF post season make-up, but there's always gonna be a bunch of complaining and displeasure with a system that tries to find the best handful of teams from such a large and diverse class of participants. Most of that has to do with people always trying to find something to complain about. Just look at the Seahawks this year and everyone bitching about them getting to host a playoff game. That sort of thing wouldn't happen with the current BCS philosophy of subjective voting. And as far as a "fair" system goes, let's just look at the Bears path (the whole season) to the conference championship game this year, and then look at the Baltimore Ravens' path. Are you kidding me? If I had to choose one way, it would certainly be a playoff of some sort. It would be much more exciting and gives more teams a chance to really challenge for a championship. But to say that the NFL's playoff system really allows the best teams to advance deeper into the postseason is a little naive. And you've got to give it to the BCS lately, the last 4 champions have been absolutely indisputable. And is there any question that Oregon and Auburn were the two best teams this year? The real issue with NCAAF is discrepency between the strength-of-schedules from conference to conference. The SEC title game is the de facto championship because no one else is even close. Over the last five years, had SEC teams all beaten each other up so much that none of them made it to the title game, then you would have had a problem, because until someone else proves otherwise, the best of the SEC is the best of the NCAA.

You raise some interesting points. Just curious, if you could, how would you rework the NFL playoff structure?

  • In reply to tobijohn:

Well, shit. At this point I would probably just crown the SEC title game winner as the national champion and skip the whole bowl season.

  • Bottom line is: You have to lose at some point in your season to not play in the Superbowl. In college football, you have teams with one or no losses that don't have the ability to play in the championship due to strength of schedule and other factors beyond their control.

Yes, the NFL system is not perfect and yes its harder for some teams than others. Bottom line is, win and you're in... look at Green Bay. They have to play I think 5 must-wins in a row (including the end of the regular season), mostly on the road, to get to the big dance. But if they don't lose, they're in. Win and you're in - that's the beauty of the playoffs.

Jeff - I agree with your system, but I think there should probably be a few more than 8 teams in the playoff. I'm thinking 16 is a little big, but is probably the better number. 12 would be a mess given the prospect of college bye weeks.

  • I am out of college football officially, thanks to Cam Newton, Reggie Bush, and the Ohio State debacle.

Rules are broken, punishments are doled out unevenly. Money is disallowed, but it's everything. Rah, rah, rah, but there is little loyalty.

Give me the NFL, or give me death.

  • $o I get why thi$ ha$ changed guy$, but are they $eriou$ with thi$ middle of January all $pread out Bowl game $hit?

It'$ pretty ridiculou$ actually... Remember when bowl game$ were all in a nice little grouping around new year$? Them$ were the day$ ya'll$.

Oh, and... Casey Mathews is also a fucking animal... jesus, genetics and roids work so well with the family. He also has the super gay long hair, his is just brown... Johnny, any takers?

    Couple more thoughts:

    * Those unis are pretty damn sweet. Ducks have the best unis in CFB by far.... all 243 of them.

    * What would Nagurski or Butkus or Jim Brown, or Grange think of this shit (must be nice to be a 17 year old playing FB for Oregon): (you have GOT to be shitting me)

    * These two teams are damn good... but besides the terrible picks, the ducks could probably play with some of the bottom feeders in the NFL (not really, but you get the point)

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Long hair is heroic plus chicks dig it. At least that's what I tell myself...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I need some excuse to spend hundreds on high-end shampoo and conditioners...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

    Oh, yeah.... uhhh... sorry TJ.

...but it looks good on you.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Not according to my dear departed grandmother: "Oh Johnny, you'd be so handsome if you'd just cut that damn hair! You look like a horse's ass..."

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Oh, nd not that there's anything wrong with that

  • In reply to MB30SD:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

i don't know if the Matthews clan takes roids. They are all like that man, every single one of them is built the exact same way except uncle Bruce, who was even bigger and more of a bad ass. Love the Matthews clan. Checking on the roids angle with my USC connection.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

that is some pretty gay hair though. imagine christmas at the matthews house where all of the uncles and dads tease their equally huge and violent sons about their thor like hair.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

just confirmed that Matthews did not take roids. my connect knows all of the usc dudes. Matthews was a gym rat and only ate skinless chicken breasts and vegetables with his protein shakes for nearly every meal.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Ahh, Skinless Chicken breasts. Natures roids.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

There is no national champion in college football that is earned. We merely deem that the winner of the BCS title game is the winner. Before there was a BCS this fact was a little more obvious because the #1 and #2 teams rarely played each other in a bowl game. The conferences would not agree to a playoff system because there is too much financial interest in having multiple schools in multiple bowls. I could be wrong in fact I hope so, but there are too many parties with too many fingers in the pie.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Is it me or do the Oregon Ducks numbers look like they're made from duct tape?
