Thoughts on the Fifth Straight Victory

First, congrats to Shady - the man the fans decided should enjoy Bears v. Pats with Noah and myself Sunday.  I can't remember the day Shady first started commenting but he's been here an awful long time and it'll be a pleasure to have him buy me a beer (or 3).  Shady, send me an email (jeff@dabearsblog.com). Onto the game...

  • The defense was wretched at times and our coverage units were dealing us a bad hand repeatedly but yesterday Jay Cutler and the offense kept the Bears in the game and ultimately won it.
  • This game was defined, for me, by two drives.  The Lions touchdown drive to end the first half exposed the lethargy with which the Bears had played the entire first half and most likely incited a halftime riot.
  • And when the Bears needed a couple first downs to put the game away in the fourth, they let Cutler throw the ball.  Last week Jay Cutler became the emotional leader.  This week he became the physical leader.
  • The Bears have found their running game at the right time of year.
  • Earl Bennett is now officially the Bears #1 receiver.  So if you don't mind, don't go getting into Lovie's dog house like your predecessors.
  • Who whiffs on more blocks?  Brandon Manumaleuna or Frank Omiyale?
  • Tice & company need to stop pulling Olin Kreutz to the outside.  He simply can't get there.
  • Loved the shot of Hester's disappointment on the almost-score punt return.
  • Brilliant performances by Robbie Gould and Brad Maynard.
  • The Lions decided to accept the Bears perimeter pass rush and used a combination of outside runs and screens to exploit out aggressiveness.  It worked.  And the Bears better be ready for it Sunday from Tom Brady.
  • Chris Harris played his worst game of the year and it's the first truly bad safety performance this season.  The Calvin Johnson touchdown was inexcusably poor execution.  The entire framework of the defense is designed for that play not to happen.
  • You know what's funny about the Bears?  I can predict with 95% accuracy when they are going to commit a false start.
  • I would trade a lot for Ndamukong Suh.  I think he's going to be the best defensive player in the league as soon as Week One of 2011.
  • The team was slow and plodding in the first half, calm and in-command in the second half.  Credit has to go to the coaching staff and Lovie Smith.
  • Smith also gets credit for having confidence in DJ Moore.  The kid can play.
  • The Bears are now 9-3, 4-0 in the division and 7-3 in the conference.  They are primed for a run to the postseason.

  • First bizzotches

Steltz! Move Bitch Get Out the Way or at least get in the way of the punter!

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Agreed - I almost forgot he was still on the roster until he ran past the punter.
I'm starting to wonder if he is color-blind or has peripheral vision issues.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Well, they may be primed to make a run at it, but it'll be one game at a time and an uphill run on at least three of the four games....and it's really a matter of how hungry they are to get to the top...hopefully..very, very hungry. It's gonna be fun to watch!!!!

  • In reply to hollywood1:

    now my real comment(s):

    1. Steltz, seriously man, fucking block someone.
    2. some veteran called Bennett a "grown man" as he came off the field after one of his 7 first down catches. Yes, Earl is officially and always has been our go to guy when we need the big chain moving catch. The way he stretched the ball out on that first play to extend that huge 80yard scoring drive was the type of football play that every fan should love.
    3. Pisa, get well soon (like in 4 days)
    4. Lach had 17 tackles - way to go you old bastard!
    5. Rough day for Briggsy but he will rebound
    6. Hester will break the record this year and in the meantime will keep fear boners growing and growing throughout the league.
    7. Peppers has my vote for Defensive MVP. The things he does that don't end up on the stat sheet are frequent and impactful. DJ's 4th and 1 breakup? Pep in qb's ass. Early 3rd and long shit pass by Stanton? Pep in that ass. Dropping RB's for little to no gain? Pep in that ass. Drew Stanton getting driven into the turf out of bounds for a huge sack? Pep in that ass. Reverses and outside runs? Pep in that ass.
    8. Robbie Gould kicked the shit out of that ball. that would have been good from 58.
    9. Robbie Gould kicking touchbacks against Logan? HUGE.
10.Cutler going 10/10 for 104 yards and a TD including a 5:19 Fuck You to the Lions in the 4th quarter to end the game? Jay, you deserve whatever Cavalarri does to you post game. Just don't cover her in chocolate, you may fall into a diabetic coma and we need you for the Pats game.
11.Cutler having a 116 passer rating means he is not throwing picks but IS throwing completions and TD's. I like. Conservative AND creative.
12.I really like the games that Martz is calling even though he keeps fucking with us by calling the occasional 7 step that results in a sack or fumble. UGH!
    13. Olsen had a huge long, downfield and sustained block on Forte's TD run.
    14. CT in the endzone. Keep it up mang.
    15. Saw Melton in Stantons face a couple of times. keep it up.
    16. 9-3 with the Patsies coming to town.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

    17. I like using Manumaleuna as a receiving "threat". He has not dropped anything yet, and I sure as hell would not want to be a DB trying to tackle that behemoth. Now if the guy could consistently block in the Martz world he would earn those big paychecks.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

Just like his pants, defenders can't stop him, they can only hope to contain him.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

    agreed

  • In reply to Mastodon:

Want to see something that will make you appreciate Bear Down?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mya8zm-4_0I

My GF said "we need to start kicking ass, because I cannot listen to that again."

The guy is so lame, he stands over against the wall at about the 20 yard line behind the Lions bench and sings this stupid, stupid, stupid song.

When Suh makes a play, he gets his own scoreboard graphic. It says "A boy named Suh!" then it flashes "How do you DO?" The fans all howl "Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue". I yelled at Lions fan "Johnny Cash is from Memphis you idiots!" We weren't making any friends from Detroit in our section.

I watched Megatron run that post right in front of us. Made me sick, and yes, it's because Chris Harris is very very slow. In real life, when you can watch the whole field, esp. from behind the safeties lengthwise down the field, what is most evident is how MUCH faster Daniael Manning is than Chris Harris or Pringles. Also, when you sit behind the secondary you get an appreciation for what a scrapper DJ Moore is and how good at tackling he is for such a little guy.

Lastly - again a vantage point observation: Lack is an awful, awful blitzer and he probably shouldn't get schemed to do it unless he can stunt and confuse and get a free shot. He's trivially blockable. Yes, he's playing at a high level because even though he no longer has great speed, his size + speed makes him so rangy, so much faster to the sideline than Hunter could dream of.

Oh, and Butter actually is something of a problem on turf, because he's so quick off his one leg. He was shooting gaps in there and causing problems.

Best's long runs came breaking inside runs to the outside. The Pats have nobody that can do this. Even if BenJarvis were nearly as fast as Best, which he isn't, the Soldier Field turf will take care of any thoughts like that.

Peanut after the game gave his gloves and elbow pads to a couple kids in the stands. No other Bear did anything like that I saw.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    WTG, Peanut.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

Peanut is the man. And he played really well yesterday.

  • In reply to sjvl:

I was really impressed with the great tackling by Moore and Wright yesterday. They saved us from a couple of Lions TD's.

Not sure who to cheer on tonight... I despise the lowly cheating organization known as NE but I also don't want them coming into Chicago with a chip on their shoulder. Hmmmmm

  • In reply to Jlehr:

I'm rooting for the jets defense to crush Tom Brady and knock him out. I guess I really don't want that to happen because the Bears beating the Pats with Brady would definitely shut the national media up.

  • In reply to sjvl:

I can't wait to see you in your wings! You going with white or pink?

  • In reply to sjvl:

I bought "We were the Greatest" - the 85 Bears as told to Rick Tellender. Good coffee table book.

Stories from it that you should read as Bears fans:

The 46 is named after Doug Plank. For some reason, Buddy is a dickweed and denies this now, but it was. The Bears built it around Todd Bell. But he held out the entire 85 season. Buddy HATED Dave Duerson. Kept riding him and telling him he would never be as good as Bell. So Duerson made the Pro Bowl. Duerson had a dad who was Army under Patton during WW2. Said his dad helped him keep from punching Buddy.

Bell never forgave himself for holding out, or the Bears. He wanted 1.5M over three years, the Bears would not move from 1M. So he and Al Harris held out and missed the greatest Bears season in history. They interviewed Al, who said he let it go. Bell never did. He died of a heart attack driving his car at age 47. Crashed off the interstate. What nobody ever said, is that he had just passed a billboard on the highway touting the first 85 Bears reunion coming up.

Fascinating stories from the team in there.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Couple other quick ones:

Jimmy Mac was tough and a pisser to everyone, except maybe Jimbo Covert. Covert was the smartest Bear next to Jimmy Mac and could call the whole playbook from memory.

Ditka saw something in Mac, but he was so soft he almost cut him as a rook. In the mile run, Mac would finish 2nd to last, just ahead of Noah Jackson, huffing and puffing. When the injuries started up, Ditka tried to talk to him about conditioning, instead Mac went and got shit faced up in Platville that night. Ditka never bothered again.

Covert almost decapitated himself riding a scooter at night and hitting a rope between two trees to tie the road off. He had deep rope burns across his shoulders. Ditka said he was lucky he was so tall.

  • In reply to gpldan:

In the next week or two, Pep is going to leap up and grab one of those screen passes and take it to the house. Mark it down.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Buddy is definitely a dickweed, for lots of reasons.

That's really incredibly sad about Bell. Didn't know that.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Fres, I am counting on you.
Tonight the Pats must win because -
27 pts by Deion Branch and Tom Brady will lock down the final FF playoff spot for me.
It sets up the trap game for NE next week.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

i doubt it. But i sure hope so. My fucking Bench scored more points than my starting.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

oh shit nevermind thinking of my other FFL.. Shit

  • In reply to gpldan:

Buddy Ryan was a dickweed full stop. And his nickname for Singletary was 'Stupid'. Remember that y'all if anyone is hoping he becomes our HC when the 49ers realise it too ...

That's a thing that still amazes me, best defense ever and it was missing two players. Shame we couldn't keep them all together and McMahon healthy.

My favorite story from "McMahon!" (don't forget the exclamation mark ...) is the anecdote about Wally ribbing Dent about his ass in the locker room. Wally's making out like he's Richard Dent, "Hey, I'm going for my wallet ..", Wally reaches his right hand over his left shoulder as if that's where Dent's back pocket is.

  • In reply to sjvl:

    I want this:

    * Jets and Pats to kick the shit out of each other for 5 quarters... a FULL 5 Q's. Just injuries everywhere and a loooong tiring, emotional game for everyone.

    * Pats squeek it out so they have a HUGE trap game with us

    * Brady to sprain his hair... out for just our game

    * 17 - 24 Bears

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Sort of like that Ravens Steelers game last night MB. Now THAT was a fuckin football game. Fights, HARD hits, broken noses, short-term loss of feeling in hands and feet, blood, cold, defense, shit-talking almost every play, first place on line. Can't wait to see the AFC elite beat the shit out of each other during the playoffs. That hit on Heath Miller might have been the cheapest shot on a defenseless player all year and it didn't even draw a flag. Dude's head and body were going opposite directions. Even though he didn't get it done, I think Flacco is one of the most underrated players in the league. He can run, has a good arm, tough to take down, big and can see whole field. His pocket presence just has to get better.

  • In reply to Crowned:

    Exactly.

  • In reply to Crowned:

That was a bone-headed call on 2nd and 5 with 3 + minutes to go in the game. (Harbaugh shouyld know better)...

  • In reply to Crowned:

Yeah, Flacco and Ryan are going to be top dogs. Freeman too, maybe. Sanchize is blessed with his line, but he's a bottom-feeder. Love Fitzpatrick too, and that Stanton dude looks pretty good. In fact, with Stafford and Bradford coming along, should be an interesting year next year as we defend our crown. Natch.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Earl Bennett has been making some great plays for us throughout the season. It is great that he has finally had this kind of break-through game. I really love most of our offense right now. Forte, Knox and Bennett have got me so excited. I love Hester, but obviously prefer him as a returner. Now if only we can make sure our O line keeps giving Cutler the time he needs....

This game actually made me kind of happy, despite the scare our defense gave us. I like knowing that our offense can step up when needed. It is about time they were able to return the favor. They owe our D a lot.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I thought I could upset Cutler's Forte in FF and squeek into the 4th playoff spot, but Kyle Orton decided this week at KC would be a good time to have the worst game of his career. And the Titans thought that since Moss is a fuckup, they would abandon the running game entirely and only score 6 points as well.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Q: Who whiffs on more blocks? Brandon Manumaleuna or Frank Omiyale?

    A: Chris Williams

  • In reply to MatthewIsMyForte:

    Hee hee

  • In reply to MatthewIsMyForte:

I'm not sure Manu whiffs on blocks so much as his mass displaces him to an alternate dimension...aka the Negative Zone (that's for you, Jack).

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Best bolts 45 yards downfield and is run out of bounds by D. Manning. So who was RIGHT THERE chasing down the play as well?
    Mr. Orange Julius.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

i saw that Al and it scared and delighted me to think that there is a human that can do that...and that he is on our team.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Peppers was shoved in the back and out of bounds at the end of that play and took an award fall. Should of drawn a flag on that play.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    *Akward*

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Makes winter worth it.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Oh, if he sprains his hair, his season's over.

  • In reply to sjvl:

    Ha!

  • In reply to MB30SD:

46-10, just for old time's sake. I mean they've got the same uniforms on. Brady kinda looks like Eason now ...

  • In reply to Mastodon:

Last week, Cutler got pissed. This week, Lovie got pissed. Next week, I want to see Peppers or Urlacher pissed. Anger can be a beautiful thing.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

Was it just me GP or could you hear a pin drop in that stadium at times? The Lions fans couldn't even get the sound meter into the yellow without the help of the Bears fans. To quiet for my blood. It definetly felt like a home game to me. Good times. Paying for it this morning but well worth it.

Earl Bennett is the fucking man. Dragging guys on his back all game long. And Chester Taylor had a good game. Major Wright layed some wood on a couple plays. Hope to see him start eventually.

  • In reply to Joseph:

That volume meter was lame. I thought they would need to cheat soon, because Lions fan was so lame at yelling.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Yesterday made me think of this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm4ikLH3qW0&feature=related

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Dear Lovie,

When you're loosing a ball game and have the ball with 29 seconds left in a the first half, don't wait out your enemy. Don't surrender. Ever. Risking a turnover occurs on every play (see 1st possesion of 3rd quarter), but the only way to win is to outscore your opponent, and you simply can't outscore them when the white flag is flying.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

Question: when growing a victory beard is it allowable to trim so a's to keep from looking like a mountain man?

  • In reply to Jlehr:

don't fuck it up Sac, we are on a streak.

  • In reply to Jlehr:

dont trim a hair. I wear the same outfit every sunday

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Me too. And drink out of the same frozen Bears mug.

  • In reply to sjvl:

So you're not trimming your... never mind.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I rub one out before every game. Not only does it help me relax before the game but it feels outstanding and keeps me from getting the fear boner when the Bears are losing.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Um, same outfit. OUTFIT, MB.

  • In reply to Jlehr:

Great win all around. Bring on the Pats. Im fucking chugging the kool aid right about now!

  • In reply to Jlehr:

That's exactly what you WANT. Trimming is for non-mans.

You want the Randy Moss: http://beardcoach.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/randy-moss-beard.jpg

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Oh hell no! i dont want the Randy Moss or the Ricky Williams. It's just a crumb collector that shows what you had for lunch on every interview.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

On board with all of that Jeff ...

    >> Who whiffs on more blocks? Brandon Manumaleuna or Frank Omiyale?

    > J'Marcus Webb. He will be the downfall of the team when we do fall.

    >> Tice & company need to stop pulling Olin Kreutz to the outside. He simply can't get there.

    > Yup. Been saying that for a long time, so why is he starting? Why do we have to run linemen into the ground like an old car just because they used to good?

...and Chris Harris has been blowing in coverage all year. If he can't get his lines of attack at this point in his career ... he's the J'Marcus Webb on our defense and Tom Brady will eat his lunch all day long. We got screwed on that trade. Royally screwed.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    agreed

  • In reply to Mastodon:

When was the last time that V-neck t-shirt wearing, coifed gay curl hair styling, Chanel No. 5 spritzing, cardigan hawking, Beiber looking Tom Brady got hit really hard? I would love Pep to FINISH HIM (in Cobra Kai instructor's voice.) or just break his back. The asshole wears girl UGG boots for christ sake. It's time to decrease the pussification (thanks Coach) of the quarterback position on Sunday.

  • In reply to Crowned:

    well said!

  • In reply to Crowned:

Worth getting past the ad for:

    I think that's #16 doing narration.

    RIP: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Dandy-Don-Meredith-Cowboys-hero-and-MNF-legend-?urn=nfl-292332

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Should be a moment during tonight's game.

Don ALMOST played himself in North Dallas Forty, he really considered it. Instead they used Mac Davis to play him, and Mac gave his greatest acting performance of his life.

When Don left, the booth wasn't the same. They tried different things with Kalas and eventually Dierdork, but Meredith and Cosell made the MNF magic happen. Now we got what? Sometimes a mumble from Frank in his wheelchair and Chucky and Jaws. Not the same.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Is there a doctor in the house: http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/news/story?id=5891524

How long will he be out for? A scope usually means there's something to scope. Hopefully he's at least back with a vengance for the GB game.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

hasn't Martz figured out that Manumaleuna can't block? Why don't we try Lance Louis out at that position. TE in college.

Or even Shaffer. and never have him go out for passes.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Hester should have taken the sideline route, where his blockers were between he and the potential tacklers. I'm pretty sure that is why he had his head in his hand.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

He did'nt set up the possible clinching blocks by staying outside.

  • I SECOND almost everything up there Jeff. Bennett is an excellent reciever, but I don't think he has it in him to be the true #1 long term. His skill set (including better blocking than Olsen). Definitely takes the pressure off of us come draft time though. With Knox and Bennett, we can spend our valuable picks elsewhere.

  • Congrats Shady, glad I didn't have to freeze my balls off in that suit. Hell, almost didn't make it through the Eagles game lol

It's about time Jay Cutler won a game for us or should I say Earl Bennet.

I hope we are ready for the Patriots. Maybe having the Jet's game will make them less prepared.

  • Congrats to Shady - hope you have a personal line of credit handy for the beer tab.

  • No doubt; although I give him shit, yes, the only reason it's the punter tackling him is because he's beaten everyone else.

  • G.Reg continues to get better and better at blocking. Did you see his 15 yard block on the Forte misdirection TD run? Fuckin brilliant. He's taking pride in doing the shit work and silencing the doubters that said he could never be a blocker. He's been a better blocker that ManofMoohlah, the 15 million dollar man. But, good to see Moohlah doesn't have brick hands at least.

Earl the Pearl was the number #1 reciever yesterday. I hope its Skunk or Fort Knox next week. I like the reciever by committee approach. Seems to have worked for guys like Brady and Manning through the years. Let's keep defenses on their toes. Even Moohlah showed he can be a recieving threat. I think a true number 1 for Cutty to over-hone in on could stunt his development at Q. I sat could instead of would after watching Boldin last night. But, lets keep spreading the love around.

Nice to see positives out of both parts of our 2 headed RB monster during the same game.

Lovie, I'll give it to you, you were right. Daniel Manning is a very verstaile player that can do more than returns KOs, he can really play D and cover lots of ground. D.Manning might have saved us 14 points by stopping Best on those two long runs on C.Harris's side.

Agree Jeff that C.Harris can't get beat at the end of the half like that, but it was Megatron. Most safeties are not catching him and/or wrapping him up before he gets in. But, wouldn't mind seeing more Pringles these last four to see if he can contribute during the playoff push.

All Cutty has to do is avoid mistakes and be a little bit better than ordinary. The D and specials will do the rest. I used to look down at the phrase "game managing QBs," but these types of Qs win games.

Stanton said the Lions were close to going to a silent count. Great job to GP and the rest of Bears Nation for bringing the noise. Stanton can ball though. Seems like a more durable Stafford.

Congrats to Shady. I vote Coach gets the next free ticket no matter what.

    Great work Jeff.

  • In reply to Crowned:

nothing, and i mean nothing, makes me more erect as a fan than solid blocking downfield. It is the ultimate act of a football player. It is the difference between 5 and 15 yards, 15 and 60yard jaunt, an INT and a pick six. Blocking on punts, Kickoffs and Interception returns were the hallmarks of our great defensive teams over the last couple of years. Remember when Vash or Brownie would be taking one to the house and Lach, Rosie, HH, Tillman and the boys would be housing dudes down the field?
We have to keep that fly to the ball mentality that we were lacking in the first half. We held them to 47 yards in the 2nd half. That is how much yardage 7yr old pee wee football teams gain in a half. That is an old fashioned cuff to the ears.

Oh and i have to say it. I love the way Suh plays...dirty and angry. You live and die by the sword though and if you don't kill your opponent with your strike then prepare for him to come back at you like a fucking ninja samurai surgeon. 10/10 you Lion pussies.

  • That sucks. Hopefully he's back before that. I saw a big difference in the run defense yesterday with Pisa in. Maybe he'll be back after next week. Big loss for the defense if not.

  • out not in.
