Wow, peter king finally worthy of something:

"5. Aaron Rodgers' head. Looks like he won't be playing Sunday night at New England; he missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, days after suffering his second concussion of the season. All those who think Matt Flynn can win in Foxboro, raise your Cheeseheads. I didn't think so."

Ours is the most simple of equations... we're almost guaranteed a Pack loss this weekend with Matt Flynn + the Pats + at home. We need to take care of business plain and simple.

We let this slip and we get what we deserve. For fuck sake, can we please just ice these fuckers and move on to the playoffs. Please.

I'm so bereft that I think it may have actually been the Moops and not the Moors.

Correction: The Moops play in the AFC West out of Lompoc,
California. Lompoc is a sneaky W.C. Fields reference.

  • In reply to kenbill:

Didn't the Moops take over present day Spain, and almost took over Europe until Charlemagne stopped them?

  • In reply to kenbill:

Cormonster you're correct on the Fill-in-the-Blank, and now the Essay portion. What length of time could you hold out if sealed in your office by corporate? Discuss and explain.

Oh, great! Now I'm walking around singing "Hard White Snow" as well as selections from "Les Miserables".

  • In reply to kenbill:

I don't have an office per se, but if I did it would depend on the circumstances. If water is available, probably 4-6 weeks. If beer is available, 9-12 months. No water, not much more than a week. Too many other variables to figure out beyond that. Jack or Al, have you ever seen this obscure old movie? It's kind of like an old Greek tragedy or morality play.

The critical component, as we are going to find out at TCF, is whether the toilets are working.

Eeeewwwwww... and it has the word "moral" right in the description?!

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Tod Browning's FREAKS? Actually, i never have. I understand it is quite dark.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

It IS regarded as a minor classic.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

It's worth a watch Al. Most of the characters are actual circus "freaks". The moral of the story is if you marry a dwarf and try to poison him for his inheritance, the circus people will turn you into a "freak".
Mike Brown, kudos to you for being on a mission. You better know what your doing regarding dressing properly to sit in that weather for 6+ hours. Don't forget to have an extra pair of gloves in your armpits to keep the extremities warm.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

"Freaks" is about 70 years ahead of its time...and still very difficult to watch.

Helen Mirren is classic. Still gettin' it done in a bikini at 65?! Check out COMING OF AGE for Ms. Mirren's early work.

Oops, I mean AGE OF CONSENT. Mea culpa.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

And because I've got too much time on my hands tonight, here's one for you Prisco haters: picking games outright this year, he's at 46%. You're better off flipping a coin....

  • In reply to tobijohn:

Na, that's wrong. It must be against the spread because on the CBS experts page it has him at 109-68-0. That notwithstanding, I still think he's an asshat...

Is it as fucking boring as the original with Jeff Bridges? Just found the the Big Lebowski on VCD for like 20c the other day. Still holds up. "Heyyyy, I've got a beverage here maaan.", and was there ever a cooler character in a movie with fewer lines than Jesus Quintana ?

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

BTW - 'Social Network' (about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg) is a great movie for anybody if they haven't seen it ... but an absolute must-see for any computer nerds out there. Kudos to Justin Timberlake - dude can act, he plays the silver-tongued founder of Napster.

  • Always a day late and a dollar short. But the first shall be last and the last shall be first. At least thats what I keep telling myself! haha

  • Ha!

    Nice.

  • Great show Jeff. I love the Sunny reference. Reminded me of that great episode where the gang tries out for the Eagles.
I nominate Grace Potter to sing the Monday Night Theme song next year. I could look at those legs every Monday, and she's got some pipes. http://www.vh1.com/video/misc/602760/grace-potter-and-the-nocturnals-perform-paris-ooh-la-la.jhtml#id=1653349

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    is he really starting?

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Even better is that McNabb is the THIRD stringer...they gave him an extra 3.5 million on his extension and now he's their emergency QB.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

That deal is starting rank right up there with the Bears pissing away a #1 for the immortal, Rick Mirer.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Is anyone else getting worried about the stadium/field talk for Monday nights game? The players seems to be spending way too much time concentrating on the field condition instead of actually playing. I love Briggs but this quote scared me

"We will have a chance to watch on Sunday and see what happens up in New England. If the Packers get that 'L' we definitely will have to get this win."

Dude! You have to get this win regardless. Quit worrying about everything else. Just beat the Queens!!!

Dallas -6 over the Washington: From DEADskins to REXskins.

Buffalo +5.5 at Miami: Because I think that's a lot of points for the 'Fins to cover.

New England -9.5 over Green Bay: Because I think the Fantasy Football gods were telling me "Your kicking game is SCREWED this week, son." because it was a choice between the 49ers Jeff Reed, who I correctly FIGURED would struggle to see the field much against San Diego, and the Pack's Mason Crosby, who I don't expect to see much of at all this Sunday either.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

If you figure it out, please share.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Yes '85.

Did you tell them you're almost an official Bears fucking mascot and it's almost your fucking duty to be here? Did you?

    Love the apathy rant.

    Nice chops Jeff. Good work.

    Bears, Cowboys, Colts

  • In reply to Crowned:

the plague of apathy! haha shit busted me up

  • In reply to MB30SD:

J'Marcus Webb, after being 4th in penalties in the league, hasn't had a penalty in 3 games. Is the young man-child getting better?
    I think so.

    Nice rant Reverend.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Hope so! who is second or third? OMIYALE? I swear that fucking guy has a penalty every game. False start on the stupid fat ass who can block.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

CANT. Fuck man my grammar is pathetic. shit should of paid more attention in english class instead of ditching and getting high.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

I don't remember much of high school, but all my friends say I had a great time...in fact I don't remember much until I was 26....god the 60's and 70's were great...of what I can remember anyway!

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

    Should *have*.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

J'Marcus Webb (at least up til a couple of weeks ago), was THE most penalised lineman in the NFL.

  • In reply to Crowned:

    YES!!!

  • In reply to Crowned:

I don't mind HOLDING penalties as much. Sure, I would like for our Oline to actually block, but I'd rather them hold than let Jay get Giant-ed.

But OFFSIDES...that's just a Bozo mistake, which kills drives, esp for us, since teams than know we have to pass cuz our draw game doesn't scare anyone.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Oh, and man was I wrong with my 17-14 Bears victory over Pats, but oh well, better to err on the side of hope lol
I actually like that the Bears are going to be playing in the elements again - a chance to redeem themselves in "bear weather".

I read an interesting article that said "There's a reason it's called the Tampa 2", which flat out argued that "Bears weather" would actually hurt our D, which relies on speed, esp from the front four. Mix this with Martz O and the ad nauseaum debate about changing Solider Field to turf, and it makes one wonder...

The article also argued that 3-4 Defenses can actually play in the snow better since it basically has 3 fat men holding the line, and the linebackers are already standing up, which provides better footing...then you look at Pitts, New England, Ravens and other "cold weather teams" and a majority of them play in a 3-4D.

Can anyone think of a cold weather team, other than us, that plays a Tampa 2? Something to mull over...

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

The evidence is with you. Pack plays outside in a 3-4. Lions & Queens re 4-3 teams with covered homes. Well, USUALLY covered.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

That wouldn't bode well for us playing the Jets then ?

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

So the defensive mantra should be "Stuff the run and keep young Mr. Webb in the pocket because you KNOW he's going to want to turn rabbit and his best attibute at this point is his athletic ability."

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

That 3-4 observation is very keen. Do you know where you read that?

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Scroll down to #9:

    http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/12/biggs-10-thoughts-on-bears-loss-to-patriots.html

  • In reply to tobijohn:

Yup, that be the one. #2 also discusses the cover 2 and field turf. Thanks for the back-up Tobi! I got a little lazy with the citations today lol

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

According to this site, the Giants, Eagles and Bengals (not sure how cold it actually gets in Cinci):

    http://backseatfan.com/2010/07/2010-nfl-coaches-team-offensive-and-defensive-schemes/

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I take that back immediately - those teams I mentioned above play a 4-3 NOT Tampa 2...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

Tampa and Indi are the only other teams that really play a "tampa" - though every 4-3 team has that package/play and implements it on situational downs (usually, loong downs).

Ironically enough, Lovie himself says that the Bears don't use Tampa 2 as much, but stats and my eyes say other wise.

Not that we don't play it well - our D has been top 3-5 all year, but the snow may put us at a disadvantage On both sides of the ball - lest some one out there feels the running game can carry us)...so much for "bear weather"...

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

Why are we still using the term 'Tampa 2' by the way? Are we in Tampa? Was it invented in Tamps? No, Dungy adopted the Steelers' Cover 2. Shouldn't it be the 'Chicago 2' or just 'Cover 2' or the 'Steel Curtain'. Won't Smith/Maranelli have their own little wrinkles in there? Enough to justify a name-change anyway?

I called a guy out on this over on another site - he came out with a Poindexter article about the differences between the Cover 2 and the Tampa 2 - absolute bullshit. If anyone wants to change the name of a defensive scheme because the fucking MLB makes a sight adjustment and drops back deep then go right ahead. Take a sign that says 'I am a Poindexter' and stand at the back of the class though...

Chicago 2 or Cover 2. The defense rests its case your honor.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

And again, the Bears use a lot of Cover 2 looks, but most 4-3 teams do as well. No one is Cover 2 all the time, it's just a formation - people get too hung up on the Bears/Cover 2 thing IMHO.

  • In reply to Crowned:

I might be mistaken but weren't the Vikings favored at the beginning of the week? They're 7.5 underdogs now. BTW, the Packers are now 14-15.5 underdogs. I think they were about 6.5 up until it was announced Rogers was out...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I belive you are correct. The first line I saw was
    Queens -3.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Talk about a game with a "golden middle".
I wonder if Vegas was really taking any bets on this game early in the week.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

First line I saw on the Pack-Pats was NE -9.5

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I went to the Red Rock after you had posted earlier this week, and the game was off the board...

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

Not surprised. Leaving lines like that on the board is NOT how they built all those casinos.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Even James "Big Cat" Williams had to LEARN the position before he became a force.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

+1 Al. That's who who Webb reminds me of. Little story. I seen the Bears scrimmage the Saints in La Crosse in 94 or 95 when Ditka was coaching the Saints. After showering, Big Cat was one of the first out and went to the bar next to where the bus was parked (there are bars everywhere here) and came out with a bunch of food. After finishing, he went back in and doubled up before everyone was ready to go. Man that guy could eat a lot of food.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

I believe Big Cat was a convert. He was drafted as a Defensive Tackle.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

True. Big Cat WAS drafted as a D-tackle.

Sure. Whaddya bet it's fit for a Blackhawks game by Monday night?

Might be busy for a few days with family and they hate when I get on the computer to just read about football( there crazy, right?)

Anywho, are we really playing on that tundra?

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

yea we are. Hopefully all our players come out in one piece

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Yes. I will buy you a ticket if you will wear the Supes outfit to the game.

  • What? (confused face)

  • Bring in the Chicago political machine as well, that will get it done.
I partied with Grace and the band about 3 years ago after a show, and seen more than a handful of shows right up front, and those legs are to die for.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

I also meant to ask what is the avatar all about?

  • In reply to TheFifth:

    Jaguars +4.5
    Lions + 5.5

  • In reply to Hoosierdaddy:

Thats long time Waits fan Jeff doing his best impression. You should hear him do the Piano Has Been Drinking

  • +1 for the Faith Hill SNF open.

  • (I got lucky, Thanksgiving was a 2 pointer...)

Rule #1 - Never bet on a team that you have not seen play within the last 2/3 weeks. This sounds like a no brainer, but I see guys do it all the time. They settle for the an expert opinion, and most experts are impostures. You hearing me, MB?

Rule # 2 - Penalties and ST matter. (Believe it or not, penalties turn games around more often than turnovers do. Discipline is required to win consistently. Winning the field position battle (the game within the game) consistently
is also an ingredient of successful teams.)

Rule # 3 - Avoid games with Jeckyl and Hyde teams. Think Chargers.

    Hope this helped.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

Thank you, Obi-Wan. We are not worthy.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

By the way, players. If the picks contest were a fight, the ref would have stopped it by now.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

Wouldn't Jekyll and HIDE teams be more apropos?

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    That doesn't work for me.

    How about "Arrogance"? Even "Hubris"?
Seems to me young Mr. McDaniels thought it smelled like roses when he broke wind.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Dude is funny as hell, nice find.

My fave line: Things are so bad in Denver that we envy the Jets their coaches. At least they trip people.

    Brilliant.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Talk about a twin stars going nova.

The Bronocs without Shanny and Shanny without the Broncos.

  • In reply to gpldan:

i think Tebow is a good kid and a solid football player but if you were a Broncos fan why would you be chanting his name? Orton is putting up video game numbers this year.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Common, all the tebow hate sucks man... he's a great Tight End... give him a chance at catching some passes.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I can't help but recall BOBBY DOUGLASS.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Tebow sucks. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. That was a guy they could of gotten in the second rd, maybe even third!

Stupid Saints jobbed me on Thanksgiving!!!!! How are you up 17-0 after 1 and DON"T COVER!!!!! Shit, they barely won.

  • In reply to jmcyclone:

I would have stayed away from that game if it weren't for the fact that we had to pick those games...

  • Bye the way, the Cards violate rule # 3.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

I don't know, Master, the cards have lost like, 5 or 6 straight. Looks more like Their Dr. Jekyll went off and hid.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

They beat the Broncos 43 - 13 last week. (I know.) I'm scratching my head too. I don't get them.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

Well, it WAS a pair of 3-9 teams. SOMEBODY had to lose and the Cards were at home. I'm still giggling over the sight of Jay Feely running for a TD.

  • Two questions Doc.
    1) Are all or most of your song originals?
    2) What's your opinion of Pascal's wager?

  • In reply to TheFifth:

OK, now my brain hurts trying to keep up with THIS tangent.

  • DabearsBlog opening song? classic.

  • Oh we weren't all rooting for Kevin, Larry ....

  • Fibonacci for me.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

A lot of stock and commodities traders use Fibronacci numbers....

  • Steelers
    Raiders
    Cowboys

  • Jeff, a quick question:

Listening to the Saturday show, you mention you and your brothers' W/L/T totals which add up to 39 games. If we're in week 15 then the previous 14 weeks should add up to 42 games total. Why the discrepency?

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I'm guessing a push is neither win nor loss.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

I didn't catch his brothers' breakdowns but he said his is 22/16/1 I'm assuming the tie was the push...

  • In reply to tobijohn:

    FWIW, mine is 24/17/1

  • In reply to tobijohn:

I believe we started Week 2

  • In reply to tobijohn:

    Redskins +6
    Ravens -1.5
    Chiefs +2.5

Internet went belly up over the weekend, while out of town... so your choice if you want to count it, but here they are.

  • Occam's Razor?

  • No. I am officially out of the Marines. Loved every minute of it. Got to do everything I was trained to do, and brought all of my guys home.

I am now a General Superintendent for a Builder in Nevada, a dad to two beautiful young girls (and another one the way - not sure boy or girl yet), and my wife digs me.

I have a degree in Philosophy, so I've trained myself to focus on the big picture, and I've always seen contradictions pretty easily. That's about it.

Oh yeah. I love, LOVE, the Bears, and I love this blog.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

"Semper Fi" and thank you for the service, Viva!

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Semper Fi, AL! Thank you!

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

Folks in the service have all my respect. Tough life in which I would have lasted about about 2 days.

Were the D.I.'s still allowed to smack you around or had they been reigned in?

  • whatthe hell were you people thinking??? Oh yeah, you were all hiiiiiiigh.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Have you ever heard the Blues song "I wouldn't Did What I
Did, If I hadn't a Been High"? Catchy song and funny as hell. AfroMan does a really funny song "Because I Got High." Love those types of songs.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

I dig that song too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeYsTmIzjkw

Pretty hip for a self-professed 'old guy' Canada.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    then there's:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYx7YG0RsFY

And the millions of funny knock offs.

Love Jay and Silent Bob. Clerks is the funniest movie ever made for $28,000.00. Alcohol almost always got me into trouble. Low tolerance and little self control. I could handle the other things much better.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'm a moron - I just realized that DBB league playoffs are two weeks per round.
So Fresno, you aren't out of it.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

yea NO shit.. really MB really?

  • Kudos on playing all originals. There's some good songs in there. Haven't heard them all yet. I like the beer shack too. I'll be out watching some live music tonight. Three bars within 10 blocks have live music at least 3 nights a week. Love it.

  • I think God let Pascal in for cleverness alone lol

  • Thank you for clearing that up Professor Nitty.

  • Good song material Doc.

  • Christmas shopping can be brutal. MB I was at the Westfield mall today in Escondido. That fucking mall is Huge. Charger girls were out there today and I was tempted to cop a feel with a pic, But the Bear inside of me said FUCK NO!. haha.

  • Good articles thanks for posting those.

  • Yep, you're only one point back now after Rivers' 3 TD game on Thursday.
    It's a pretty unusual setup.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

your lucky I forgot to adjust my Lineup, I totally forgot about that thursday night game.

  • Can't say I'm surprised by his comments about Collinsworth.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:
