Bears at Lions Game Preview

The Chicago Bears are coming off their most impressive victory since Sunday January 21, 2007 against the New Orleans Saints - a win that ushered them to their first Super Bowl since the 1985 season.  Dominant on defense, efficient and often assaulting on offense and always reliable on specials, the Bears now head into the Motor City with an opportunity to guarantee themselves a winning season.

YOUR SOMEWHAT ELITE 2010 CHICAGO BEARS
over
Detroit Lions

Why do I like the Chicago Bears this week?
  • I always like the Chicago Bears.
  • I think I'm very much still underrating the impact of the Bears defense.  I still expect them to give up the big play on third-and-long.  I still expect them to give quarterbacks too much time in the pocket.  I still expect bad penalties in the secondary.  None of those things happen anymore.  This defense allows only 15+ points a game - less than the Steelers, Ravens and Jets.
  • Jay Cutler is on a hot streak and I expect him to mirror his Week One performance: 23-35, 372 and two touchdowns.  Jay Cutler won't admit it but he feels slighted by Terry Bradshaw's not including him on his ten best quarterbacks under thirty list.  I don't expect a letup down the stretch.
  • Shaun Hill is not Joe Montana but he'd be coming into this game with confidence from the final drive of the Week One matchup.  Drew Stanton will be facing a pass rush that had not yet emerged with depth and a secondary that had not yet been settled.  The Bears will shut down a now-healthy Jahvid Best and force Stanton into situations he's uncomfortable with.
  • The one thing that worried me slightly against the Eagles was our struggles in punt and kick return coverage.  Robbie, in the dome, has no excuse not booting the ball into the end zone and Maynard needs to find more hang time to allow our punt coverage units time to get downfield.
  • There are two Lions I fear recently.  (1) Calvin Johnson.  Johnson is possibly the best receiver in the league and the Bears need to keep Charles Tillman and a safety near him at all times.  His skill will also be somewhat neutralized by Drew Stanton however.  (2) Kicker Jason Hanson never seemed to miss a kick against us so I feared anything under about 55 yards was a makable kick.  Hanson is hurt and Dave Rayner couldn't scare a group of pigeons with a foghorn.
  • The Bears have mastered the short passing game in recent weeks, involving Knox, Hester, Olsen, Forte and Duke of Earl at nice intervals.  If they drop seven steps and allow the Lions front four to dictate play, they'll be asking for tough afternoon.  If they get the ball to their playmakers quickly, they should move the ball fluidly all afternoon.
  • Devin Hester breaks the record.
Chicago Bears 34, Lions 10

  • Bears are in FIRST place in the NFC North!!

  • Bears 41, Lions 3.

And don't worry about Peanut. He will do just fine.

  • yo im good. I just had driving with a suspended license, but this is my third charge of it..no jail time for it though. I gotta drive though. cant carry my tools around and get on a bus...anyways.

I expect the bears to win this game but alot. I mean we should destroy these guys!

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Nice. Welcome back Fres... we all had frightening visions of that one shawshank scene.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    haha. relax

  • Of our remaining 5 games, this is the easiest. I find that stressful, because I don't see this as an easy game. Bears still win by a score.

Too bad Hester's super bowl kick off return doesn't count in the record books... he would already own the record. THAT play was the single most exciting Chicago Bears play in my adult life and quite possibly EVER.

You could argue Walter breaking the rushing record. hmmm... thoughts?

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

It was good. The other one that does not count was the return of the missed field goal, which was a way cool play too.

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

When Wally broke the record I don't think anyone screamed their lungs out. It was a procedural thing, "Wally's going to break the record on th4e next play ... yep, there it goes."
I signed myself out of hospital for a day so I could watch the game at a friend's house, I lost my voice after that play. I think the only play I went more nuts over was Hester's punt return to put us ahead in the Monday night miracle. Jumped around the living room like a chimp on PCP.

    Urlacher's finest moment.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Awesome. I remember I was so angry that I turned off the TV and missed almost all of the 3rd quarter.

Thanks jebus I couldn't stay away. Amazing.

Oh, and reading about Rex's pathetic play just made me throw up in my mouth. Man that guy sucked.

  • In reply to JimmyNewport:

    You are right on, Jimmy.

I don't understand how/why the return in the NFL's biggest game "doesn't count".

Hell, it SHOULD count for TWO!

  • Bears started at 3.5 point favorites, and it has now edged up to 4.5. I'm definitely taking the Bears in the pick contest this week. Calvin Johnson does scare the shit out of me, though.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

Even with Drew Stansifancy at Q?

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Had us all concerned Fres, thought it might have been another DUI thing. Drive safe my friend.

  • In reply to iamndmurff:

no man, I learned from my previous DUI's. I wouldn't do that ever again. I just got a suspended license but the thing is i have to drive. I'm a trade-worker, so i haul tools around. I just gotta wear my seatbelt and stop talking on the phone as i drive. Those are the two things that get me.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Glad to hear it; but wtf are you thinking not wearing your seatbelt? We need all the Bears fans we can get.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

good point. I never seen it like that. Seatbelts for some reason give my chest itchy and irritated. Dont know why,

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

    wear a shirt then, man!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Good God, ditch the damn phone too! I'd almost rather someone be drunk than jabbering on a damn cell phone.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

nah its not like that. I get bussiness calls during driving.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

"Please leave a message and I'll get right back to you. Ciao baby."

  • In reply to Mastodon:

no its not like that...bussiness calls

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

But, um, if you crash you might not have any business.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Just read Sunday's game in Detroit is sold out. Probably a first. Definitely Bears fans. Indoor home game, anyone?

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

"Couldn't scare a group of pigoens with a foghorn."

    Nice Jeff, very nice.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

ESPECIALLY since you spelled pigeons properly!

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    +1

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

When we were at the game, they would start to play Souja boy and I swear you got goosebumps every time because when you saw who was back there you couldn't help but think.. is this the one?

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    1. If Peanut doesn't make his first pro-bowl the whole system is fucked up. Woodson and Tramon Williams are good, but Nut has been just as impactful for his team if not more. He got a little worked by Mike Williams, but part of that had to do with the cover 2 shell. Besides that he's been pretty shut down and well over-due of more props.

    2. Nice to not have rotating chairs at safety for the first season in it feels like forever (in that kid's voice from the youtube vid where he's leaving the dentist and is all gassed up.)
Thank you for locking down our secondary Pep.

    * Great angle on Celek's TD. Chris Harris could totally have blown that play up if he didn't go for the strip. Stick to the run game, mang ... Pringles for FS!

    * Also, great hustle from Olsen on Knox's fumble. He was on an out pattern but chased the play downfield when Knox caught the pass initially.

    * Bennett, Graham and Davis are our three musketeers on ST. Graham blows up a LB and Bennett blocks a guy for 700 yards ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

By beating the Eagles, the Bears have increased their chance of making the NFL playoffs from 76.8% to 81.5%, according to makeNFLplayoffs.com.

The website also calculates the team's chances of winning the NFC North this season have risen from 53 percent to 68.9 percent.

If the Bears win three of their last five, they have a 99.6% chance of making the playoffs. They have a 85.5% chance of making the playoffs if they win two of five and a 31.3 percent chance if they go 1-4

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Wow. Now that's some impressive math.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

I would assume those statistics are impacted somewhat by WHO they beat, not just the number of wins.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    Aww shit son

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Interestingly, for some reason the Football Outsiders algorithm hates the Bears, and 56.7% chance to make the playoffs, and only 43.3% chance to win the division, despite being a game up. Our expected win total is 10.1.

Take it with a grain of salt, though. After we beat the Vikings we were 6-3, and FO had us finishing 8-8.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

    "gives us a 56.7% chance..."

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

100% of stats are correct 42.7% of the time.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Pepper's gives 82% of opposing quarterbacks fear boners

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

I think that after the Eagles game, that stat actually grew (see how I did that) to 91.8%

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Just had a glance at makeNFLplayoffs.com. They're assuming that the games are coin flips essentially, so I would take those numbers with a grain of salt as well.

He won't. Nut is a player you need to watch weekly to understand his impact on the game. He also doesn't generate the eye-catching corner stats.

Our safeties haven't been just surprising. They've been excellent.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Pro-Bowl selections are often laughable though it will be hard for them to approach it supreme idiocy of awarding a Gold Glove to Derek Jeter this season.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Peanut is a tough SOB. I think it's the first year he's been truly healthy in about 3 years...shoulders, hips, back, etc. He still always plays. It's also nice to see Manning stay in one position.

  • In reply to Crowned:

i don't mean to sound overconfident but i gotta say it:

Drew Stanton is a fucking dead man. Are you fucking kidding me? Unless he has somehow developed the speed, quickness and elusiveness of Michael Vick he is going to leave on a stretcher. run and tell that homeboy.

i reposted this so i feel like it lost some of it's swagger.

  • In reply to Crowned:

I can't see Best getting anything against us, as the Lions will try to protect Stanton early and go to the run. Won't work, we shut it down. This has trap game written all over it, but after hearing Urlacher on Mike and Mike this morning, I feel good that our locker room is as tight as it's ever been, and these guys are in full-on FU mode and looking to run the table. If we stay healthy, I think we're the most dangerous team in the NFC.

  • In reply to MattySouthside:

Though Best rushed for 2 short TDs in week one his total yardage on the day was negligible

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

and that second TD was bullshit... as Lobo liked to point out.

    Lobo, where are you man?

    Lobo and Trac, same guy?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

mmmmmmmmmm. I know trac is amongst us. He has to be one of these newbies. Lobo been her for awhile doubt its trac or is it?

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

nah, lobo has been posting since the page was blue and orange, and I don't ever remember him posting crazy religious threads.

  • In reply to Church:

I was kidding end. I kind of thought of trac and lobo as the skipper and littl' buddy.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

    Do you smell that?

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

    Smells like 9-3, baby.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Bluetooth baby, bluetooth. You'll look like a dick, but it beats getting ass-raped by some neo-Nazi ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    bluetooth? hell no

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Fres, I'm telling you... you look like tool, but when I lose mine I litterally can't talk on the phone. I feel like a fucking cave man holding that thing up to my head. Besides that, it causes brain tumors.

Get the bluetooth man, the shit is like crack.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    maybe foo idk.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Good to hear you'll be a free man Fres. A man's gotta do ...

  • wtf double posted... Johnson is a beast and can easily out jump tillman for any ball. We know we have the defense but the question is can our offense be consistent?

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Lovie made a good half-time adjustment last year in Detroit. Switched over to single-high safety and put the Peanut on CJ. Shutdown. Lights out. Game over.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

    Peanut will be fine.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:
