Executing/Altering the Big Blueprint

Congrats to JAB and FRESNO, CA BEAR FAN - both are headed to the Bears v. Eagles game Sunday.  The decision was not easy and the entries were terrific but I went with a combination of good story and site loyalty.  JAB will be bringing his eight year-old son and FRESNO his father, set to redeploy to Afghanistan in March.  I'm working on a best of the submissions and it will be on the site later in the week.  Special thanks StubHub! for the gift.  Enjoy gentlemen.

ALSO DaBearsBlog will not be updating our Twitter account.  So go follow us, jerks.

Now to football...

The Giants defense, led by Lovie Smith disciple Perry Fewell, laid the groundwork for how to play Michael Vick and the Eagles in the coming weeks.  For most of the game, the Giants went to a three safety set - blitzing Antrel Rolle from Vick's strong side (the left) and leaving Kenny Phillips and Deon Grant to prevent against the Eagles best weapon: the deep toss.  It was some of the most exemplary defensive coaching I've seen in a long time and it was unfortunately lost in the flurry of turnovers committed by Eli "Not Danieal" Manning and the Ahmad "Not Carrie" Bradshaw.

Do the Bears have the personnel to execute this kind of scheme?  Doubtful.  While the safeties have been surprisingly proficient this season, only beaten deep in those rare moments when Chris Harris seems to be napping, I don't think Major Wright is quite ready to be an every down player.  (DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are not the time to find out.) Deon Grant, the Giants third safety, is a starter for about twenty-eight teams in the league.  So what do the Bears do?

They can not rely on pressure from the front four and expect to keep the Eagles offense out of the end zone.  Our pass rush, especially edge work from Idonije and Melton, has been vastly improving but it's too much of a risk.  They need to be rigidly schemed and create pressure whenever possible.  Here is my game plan to stop Michael Vick:

Step One: Keep Peppers on the Left Side

I understand that Julius Peppers has often flourished by rotating to the side he feels most comfortable on but the disparity with Vick is simply too great.  When he rolls to his right, he is a middling-to-average thrower of the ball.  Rolling to his left he is lethal, the league's highest rated passer and a threat to score on every play.  The Giants have Tuck and Osi.  The Bears don't.  Their best needs to stay on the left side.
Step Two: Blitz Lance Briggs or Pisa Tinoisamoa
I'd be hesitant to blitz Brian Urlacher because Urlacher's open field speed will be critical if/when Vick evades the rush and takes off.  Briggs and Pisa's closing speed to running backs and quarterbacks can be downright frightening and should force Vick into his struggle throws: short and intermediate routes.  This also protects the safeties downfield.
Step Three: Hit the Shit out of Vick
When Vick scrambled out of the pocket against the Giants, the Giants made him pay and by the fourth quarter it was taking him 3-5 seconds to get off the ground with almost every hit.  If Vick wants to gain yards with his legs, the Bears must crush him.  We saw Vick, albeit in a Falcons uniform, moping on the sideline of a primetime Soldier Field contest a few years ago. (This was also the Rex Grossman return game.)  Vick can be rattled - emotionally and physically.  For now the Bears should focus on the physical.

  • First, let me say congrats to the winners.

  • Congratulations!!! Show those Eagles how real fans do it!

  • Congrats to JAB & Fres. take plenty of pics you two

  • Awesome contest Jeff and congrats to the winners. Great post Jeff. Izzy and Pep will have their hands full on Sunday.

  • In reply to Joseph:

Izzy? maybe. Pep? hell no. he's the best for a reason.

and if I'm Lovie, Melton plays a little bit more this game matched up w/ Big Toe. that Samoan fucker can collapse a pocket like it's nobody's business; I want Vick scrambling and scrambling often. w/ the Deadskins, he felt totally comfortable in the pocket; Giants have shown that when Vick is scrambling & throwing simultaneously, he throws more short routes. Also, the LBs & DBs need to knock the motherfuckin' BLOCK off those WRs...keep those brick hands a consecutive week

  • In reply to Joseph:

Be nice to have Rolle instead of ManofMoohlah for this one.

  • In reply to Joseph:

when you say "Peppers must be on the left all game", you mean Vicks left, correct? But the right side of our defense.

  • In reply to soupbowlorbust:

    yes. Vick's left (he's left-handed)

  • In reply to soupbowlorbust:

    Correct.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

completely agree. BTW I think Jason Peters in unbelievably overrated.

  • In reply to soupbowlorbust:

I swear to God if Jennings just releases on Jackson or Macklin without even getting a hand on them and allowing them to beat Harris up top I will fucking go apeshit. He's been doing this a lot recently. I don't mind the cover 2 scheme, but the corner has to do SOMETHING in those first 5 yards to stop them. How about some bump and run at the line. Those little fucks won't be able to get off the line and get any seperation. Tell the corners to act like guards and punch the shit out of those 180 pounders when the ball is snapped.

  • In reply to Crowned:

This is the thing I have learned to just accept.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

What is the point of lining Jennings up at corner if he is just going to run away from the reciever and release? I'd rather have him at the edge of the line or as a 4th LB. He is useless there if he doesn't initiate contact with the WR. Can anyone give me a reason why our corners don't play bump and run and just release into an island of nowhere?

  • In reply to Crowned:

    +1

  • In reply to Crowned:

bump n' run is the last thing you want to do against a guy like Vick. You never want to turn your back on him, and let the WR run you out of the play.

The reason I think we have a shot is because when you back pedal into your drop (run the cover 2) your eyes are always on the QB.

  • In reply to soupbowlorbust:

Macklin and Jackson aren't strong enough to run our DBs out of a play. Maybe not a full bump and run, but a total release in the first 5 yards by our corners in unacceptable.

  • In reply to sjvl:

Ya, and congrats to Jab and Fres! I would've of entered, but due to financial difficulties (thanks economy), I knew I wouldn't be able to go. But man, you guys better live it up for us!

    In response to blogfather's post:

I too was hoping the Gmen would unveil a blue-print for us to follow Defensively, and they did, but we may not have the same personnel. For one, their Dline is more athletic than ours(Besides Pep, of course). Same with safeties (Manning and Wright are athetic, but not all that experienced). However, I think our Dline is much more discipline, and our linebackers superior. Also, our corners tend to make plays when it counts (only allowing 6 passing tds this year). So I think we match oup well with the Eag O.

    1) Eag are gona play a lot of 3/4 wr sets. According to STATS, they used those sets close to 50% of the time against NY, which means less of Pisa and more Moore/Wright, and a reliance on their blitzes or our Dline really putting pressure/hits/sacks on Vick.

2)make Vick roll right - obviously. He just looks awkward even attempting to pass while rolling right, and he didn't complete one pass while rolling right vs NY. I agree with BlogFather in keeping Peppers primarily at RE in order to do this. Who knows? If Butter ever had a time to gain form he can really help the cause by knifing through and forcing Vick to run immediately.

3)Our linebackers must stay wide. Not just for Vick, but for McCoy. McCoy rushed for over 100 yards, but it was primarily from two plays that he bounced to the outside for long gains. So, Discipline and outside contain are paramnount, Captain Obvious says.

    4) I'm more worried about our offense. We NEED TDS, not FGS, like u guys mentioned. I also worry that if the Eags get a 2 score jump on us, that the Bad Martz will reemerge and we will see a lot of Cutler running for his life again, which will only put our D out there more, press repeat, nightmare.

5)Xfactor: Devin, be ridiculous once more. If ever we need an extra jolt (pun intended) to hype up our crowd, d and o, this is the game. Maybe we can even put u in back at nickle solely to blitz Vick. Wouldn't that be something? Seeing Vick try to out juke out run Hester....

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

Damn bearz, you read my mind on some of your points. The D needs to stop the run and force Vick to throw on most plays. It's worked all year. Make the Eagles one-dimensional, and be disciplined on D. If the Bears get too cute, McCoy could exploit us with a long run. Stop the long ball, and if Vick decides to run, contain him from running outside, especially left. Who better than Peppers to do that. The DE's need to contain the outside and make him run in the middle of the field, where our backers can punish him. Let him gain 60-80 yards rushing and pay the price. The Eagles are going to get a lot of yards, but just don't give up the big plays. That's what they've thrived on. I think the Bears D matches up well with them.
On offense, it's the obvious. Don't turn it over, stay balanced, and score more than 20 points. I seriously think first team to 20 wins this game. Am I nuts?

  • In reply to TheFifth:

If we play ball-control offense and run the damn football...lots of 2-2 personnel, I'll feel good about our chances. The big play that Philly broke open the game against NYG with, was a draw to McCoy on the short yardage 4th down. I think we all agree the only side we worry about him breaking out of the pocket will be to his left. I think it is worth baiting him into breaking containment to the right only to have Briggs meet him on a delayed blitz. He can't get rid of the ball that quickly, or that accurately, throwing across his body, and he doesn't want to take a hit. It will be bad decision time.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Cover 2 not Cover man. They're responsible for the outside of the field so they can't afford to get beat early, as they have no help on the outside and they'll get beat for a long TD if the QB is on it. Plus they tend to be more solid tacklers than man-coverage specialists. Bend-don't-break. That's Cover 2. No team in the league has fewer passing TDs against them. We're alone at the top of that table. Isn't that great?

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Congrats, guys! Enjoy the hell out of the game.

It frees me up to get a kitchen pass from the wifey to the Minnesota game on 12/20 anyway. Those tickets are going cheap and it's MNF.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Oh and Fres, I know you like to party a little, but stay away from this new drink made in Chicago called 4loko. It is a libation filled with extreme amounts of caffine and malt liquor. I have a friend who was dumb enough to consume these over the weekend. He told me he's freaking out b/c he has been pissing out of his ass for 3 days now. Not diarreha, but rather pissing out of his ass.

  • In reply to Crowned:

  • In reply to Crowned:

Way to go Fres and JAB. You better be barking and or tossing milkbones at Vick. Props to stubhub for dishing these tickets out. Why would they do that? They have to be gaining something...

Step One: Keep Peppers on the Left Side
..........agree dog-boy is mediocre when rolling to his right...Pepe in dog-boy's FU!@#$$!ING face all day will remind his arse he's in a war..I can see Pepe's paw swatting a couple of balls in the air for some INT'S...

Step Two: Blitz Lance Briggs or Pisa Tinoisamoa
.......making dog-boy a Chicago Grinder Sandwich with Brigsy & Pisa would be a lovely meal for the day..with a nice ice cold Old Style to washer down!

Step Three: Hit the Shit out of Vick
....time to knock his dog-arse ass into next week.

Just wanted to say thanks to Jeff, Stubhub and all the well wishers here. Picking up the tickets tonight and can't wait to surprise my son. He's 8 and a huge bear fan. he has his whole bedroom dedicated to the Bears and is making me paint it Burnt Orange and Navy Blue next week. I know I don't contribute everyday but i do read everything everyone posts and the strong opinions, knowledge and conviction of true Bears fans are what keeps me coming back for more. So excited about this game and can't wait for game time. Thanks again.

  • In reply to sjvl:

Congrats JAB. Your son is going to have a great week.

  • In reply to sjvl:

You know, after reading all the madness going on in Minn, the drama of Young-v-Fisher, and the stupid shit continually coming out of T.O., Dallas, etc...I'm very grateful for out team. When informed what being the number one tackler in Bear's history meant to Urlacher, he responded, "It means that Briggs will probably pass me up in a couple years." No ego. No - I'm the king of the universe. Urlacher and our other players may not win any mr.congeniality contests, but every time I hear them interviewed and read something they say, it almost never fails that they give props to other teammates. Even former players like Mike Brown, Wale, Alex are class acts. I don't know about you guys, but these guys deserve to win a championship, and make me root for them all the more. Bear Down!

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

    Great post. So true.

Don't forget Peanut. He brings it every week and does a lot for the community.

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

They need to win that Championship real soon too. Briggs, Izzy, Pep, 8-ball, Urlacher, Mannelly, Kreutz, Garza, Taylor, Clark are all on the wrong side of thirty ... Pisa and Peanut are thirty next birthday.

  • In reply to jbenton:

Let's hope in years to come he's not saying ..."Yeah, I was there the day Vick ran for 200 yards, threw for 470 and had 7 TD passes ... that was the only time I ever saw my dad cry ...."

  • In reply to Crowned:

Fres: Buy some (I'll chip in), and hand them out to Eagles fans. Sounds like something they would like.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Honestly, I think a big key to this game is going to be scoring points. You know, like more than the Eagles.

Kidding aside, the offense did a pretty good job against the Dolphins of staying on the field and keeping the defense fresh. We will need that again, hopefully scoring more TDs rather than settling for field goals.

Congrats on the tix men, but remember to sharpen your pencils since we are expecting commentary on the Soldier Field experience.

  • In reply to Mastodon:

+100 SC. Exactly what I saw with the Dolphins game...left 2 touchdowns in the redzone and had to settle for field goals. Eagles are not going to be as forgiving. They also did good on takeaways too. As I said: We have our work cut out for us...BIGTIME!

  • In reply to Mastodon:

If we could dial up yesterday's weather for Sunday, we'd be all set. Vick would think he was in the Nam, he'd be ankle deep in the shit and running exactly nowhere....

  • In reply to gpldan:

  • In reply to Mastodon:

    Nice Fres!

Really glad one of the true regs got one of the tix. JAB, I know you contribute quite a bit but aren't an everyday reg, so your entry must have been strong... looking forward to reading it (not that yours wasn't Fres).

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Congrats to the winners. Have a great time guys. Fresno, I hope that is just confusion and you really get to go with your dad.

Jeff, are the 4 tix seated together, or are there 2 sets of 2? If it's 4 together it would be a great way for some blog bros to meet.

I think there are two things that are key to us winning this game. One, our offense wins the Time of Possession battle. And two, the defense shows Michael Dick what it's really like to be in a dog fight.

I wont be able to make the game Jeff. Please give them to someone else who can make it. Sorry bro.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Fresno, they're two sets of two tickets. Are you being deployed or is it your father? I've been there man. Went to Kuwait/Iraq for 6 months. I was one of the lucky ones that went before September 11th for border patrol on the Kuwait/Iraq border. It's tough to leave family and friends. Regardless of who's going good luck to you or your father.

Lobo, from last thread... when it comes to my family not sure I would have had the restraint you showed. nice work.

The other thought I had was that by then hopefully there'll be some fucking force field, negative magnet field shit for a helmet and all this won't even be an issue. You have to believe the first company to come up with it will do well.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB...Actually the restraining force was my(yin of yan)-wife she knows how to calm my bear inside. She's been doing it for over 30 years...you'd think by now I would learn to be more zen like.......aw shit If you don't have passion in you life what the hell is the point.

  • In reply to nicholsra:

I can just HEAR that conversation:

    lobo: "Grrrrr".

Mrs. lobo: "No honey. You CAN'T kill him."

  • In reply to nicholsra:

Mr. Vick's last trip to Soldier Field was absolutely forgetable.

It was also absolutely frigid and he looked EXACTLY like a Southern Guy who wanted to be anywhere else that night.

Bears kept him bottled up and he was totally ineffective.

He looks a little more comfortable standing in the pocket these days but, hopefully, Orange Julius was just warming up in Miami last week.

Sigh. That was the same night Grossman came off the bench and zipped a beauty on his first snap for a first down to spark the Bears and I was thinking "Oh, boy, we may have something special".

    BZZT! Wrong again, Albert.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

There's four tickets. Are you out Fres, officially?

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Its two tix? Jeff if it is two tix then I can make it.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

Excellent. Have a great time with your dad. GO BEARS!!!

Too late Fres, he already gave them to me. I'm on the plane right now with a non-alcoholic cocktail with umbrella-thingy in it. DBB are very kindly flying me in first class from BKK. The Birdman is a tool MB. He looks like a neo-nazi squater. He is a good rebounder, but he'd be so much better if he wasn't worried about getting his next neck tatoo and vanilla ice lines in his head and eyebrows and just focus on ball. That Dude rug is amazing.

Cutty had 3 easy INTs dropped by the fins D. A couple of them off guys' chests. Chester Taylor went for 10 yards on 11 rushes. It could be a long Sunday. On the other hand, I could just as easily see Jay lighting up a banged up Eagles secondary if the o-line plays semi-decent. Hobbs is out and a practice squad player is in at corner and Asante is a little banged up. Martz has to continue to be somewhat balanced and see if Forte can continue the hot streak going on the ground.

Bearz4ever, great post. Agree with everything you said.

Fres, I hope you and your Dad can make it man and thank your old man for me. Jab, have a blast with your son. I'm sure the little dude is rearing to go after you show him the ticks.

Corm, did you see my reply post. What's the best Mule album to start with? Or would I get a better grasp by listening to their live stuff?

Local commentators are saying we can't blitz that much and should stay gap disciplined on D most of the time. It's too risky they say. It's too easy for Vick to go to his hot reads. Fuck that. You have to be aggressive against this guy. You have to hit him. You have to trust your corners and safeties will do their jobs. The front four will not be enough against this guy. Send Pisa, Moore, Wright, Manning, Briggs, Ditka, Butkus, Suey and everyone else. The D can't have that sit and "respond to the offense" mentality that the Cover 2 can breed against Vick. You will stand around just watching #7 all day. On D, be aggressive, bring lots of pressure, trust your pressure to get there, trust your secondary. On O, attack their banged up secondary, stick with run game especially if Bears get up early to try and control POS, and of course give Cut enough time to work.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Yep, blitzing is a must. Otherwise, they'll sit in max protect all day, sending DJ on post routes and eat us alive.

  • In reply to Crowned:

    Congrats Fres and JAB! Represent!

  • In reply to Crowned:

Yeah Crown, seen your post. Definitely not like Widespread Panic. I find them boring. The bands have toured together, and the Panic bass player jammed with them for a while after Mule's bass played died. Mule started like an old-school power trio like Cream, but when their bass player died in 2000 they added keys also. Mule's style is all over the place. A good place to start is probably the Deep End vol.1 and 2. Mostly original songs with 25 different bass players on the two albums and about another 15 guest musicians. One of my favorite songs is Sco-Mule with John Scofield. Karl Denson also plays on one of their albums. Wiki Deep End vol. 1 and 2 and you'll see the array of players. Pretty amazing. I could also send you a bunch of stuff if we can find a way to trade e-mails. Here's a few musicians you might recognize.

GP..scary part is I hear they are thinking of taking Vick off the next cover of SI and putting that snap shot of Brett Girls Junk instead..with the headliner 'Should I retire"

It makes the lawyers choice of analogy even more unfortunate.

How time change. I'm SURE that used to be called EXTORTION.

  • In reply to gpldan:

GP. thanks brother just bought mine!

  • In reply to nicholsra:

    look into the book

Chapter II "We will be Back" the SF game...samuri yelling that back to the crowd....that is the only time I saw (WP) human as he sat on the sideline bench with his head hanging low. That image reminds me of his tenacity.

I think we are starting to see that in our "D" tenacity..

  • In reply to nicholsra:

First Bears game I ever saw. Camera close-up of McMahon on the sideline. Usually it's guys giving the number one sign, or saying "Hi Mom!". McMahon just stuck his tongue out. I'd found my team.

  • In reply to nicholsra:

Here's an article by Pat Kirwan (one of the very few national writers worth reading) wrote about how Sean Payton uses Reggie Bush:

    http://www.nfl.com/thanksgiving/story/09000d5d81c5c0f6/article/bushs-return-gives-saints-muchneeded-threat-decoy

I'd actually like to see Hester used in ways like this to create nice matchups in space (like the underneath crosser he took in for a TD). Not exactly the same way of course, since he's not a RB...

  • In reply to 750mL:

For example, imagine running Hester in Bush's spot in the offset formation from the article. But to set it up, align first in the slot formation with Forte or Taylor as the RB then shift Forte/Taylor out wide and Hester into the offset back. Now Hester can run the counter or a route (say a scissors route with the flanker) depending on if a LB follows Forte/Taylor or if they zone check.

He could do some serious damage I think in a play like that... I almost salivate at the thought of Hester getting a counter run against a spread D with LBs removed from the box (instead of the reverses he usually gets), or running a deep (flag) route or quick out/wheel vs a LB.

  • In reply to 750mL:

Amazingly he's on the waiver wire in a lot of FF leagues.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Can't score any TDs from the training room.

  • In reply to 750mL:

I agree with you about Kirwan - I listen to him all the time on Sirius NFL radio...I even bought his book this summer. It's short but really good.

Apparently the Bears-Dolphins game was one of the worst games ever played. Yeah, if you're a Dolphins fan ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Typical. When written by a Philly writer...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

No, the worst game ever played was a Colts/Jets game in the early 90s. 6 to 3 was the final score. I don't even remember who won. There had to be at least 19 punts. It was when I was living just south of Indianapolis for awhile and it made me absolutely hate the f'in Colts with every fiber of my being.

I know in USAF, you can try and get on a mil flight...may be inconvenient as hell and you'll need to leave a couple of days available both ways (one never knows), but if I were you, I'd ask him to look into it. Is he at Camp Pendleton right now?

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Congrats to the winners of the Tix.Now maybe if we can play a great game and get a win we will get some respect.

Lets hope our offense dont give the game away ala Seahawks,Foreskins.

The D i feel will keep us in the game.

  • In reply to Hoosierdaddy:

Lets hope the offense controls the ball like they did against Miami. I know Miami was hurting but they were hurting offensively not defensively and if we can control the T.O.P. we can win this game. keep the ball out of Vicks hands and we have less to worry about.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Agreed on Jennings. However, as SBorBust says, I think bump and run generally refers to man coverage. We definitely don't want that. Even Cutler has burned man coverage repeatedly for big gains on the ground.

You're right though that Tampa 2 requires redirection at the line, which the other corners seem to do pretty well -- but Jennings seems to have gotten burned by numerous times now with free releases. I haven't looked closely to see what coverages those plays were on -- it's possible they may not have been Cover 2.

It's Cover 3, various blitzes, and other single-high (safety) coverages that call for free releases by playing with cushion. Those plays have worked out for the Bears too... a number of turnovers, intentional grounding, etc.

Jamming and dropping has its risks too. It'll disrupt timing on short/intermediate routes, but it also does make it easier for the WR to outrun the CB on deep routes...

  • In reply to 750mL:

And we don't have man coverage corners anyway. Our defense is not the problem. Free safety could be better, but our problems are all on the other side of the line.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Im gonna say this right now to JAB and Fresno (or whoever ends up going), I am deeply superstitious when it comes to the Bears. If they lose I am going to blame you and personally tell you to go fuck yourselves during next week's rant. Until then, enjoy.
