Bears Have Championship Defense

We all wondered, heading into the bye week, whether Lovie Smith and Mike Martz could fix their offensive struggles.  To a certain extent they did, committing to the run and minimizing the risks Jay Cutler takes down the field.  But what's been even more impressive is that since the bye week the Bears have been the best defense in the NFL.  And right now, they are playing well enough to make a Super Bowl appearance feel much closer than I ever thought it would in 2010.

Use last night as the example.
Julius Peppers, Henry Melton and Israel Idonije looked unblockable on the edges, harassing Tyler Thigpen and limiting his escapability when the play broke down.  When the ends didn't get to the quarterback, the Bears used their trademark stunt blitz, took advantage of an overmatched Richie Incognito and sent Brian Urlacher after Thiggies.
Tommie Harris showed up and made one dominant tackle for a loss.  Lance Briggs continued to play like the best run-stopping linebacker in the sport.  Charles Tillman performed like the quintessential cover-2 corner.  Chris Harris stayed home over-the-top and limited Brandon Marshall deep.  Danieal Manning....Danieal....Manning....delivered the biggest hit of the night.
The Bears ran the ball all game last night not because they were running the ball well.  They ran the ball all night because they knew the Dolphins could not score on them.  They were right and pitched their first shutout since I watched Brian Urlacher intercept Chad Pennington in the end zone of the old Meadowlands.  That was in 2006.  A magical year.  This defense might be better.

  • FIRST shutout in 40 years for the Fins at home!

  • In reply to tomburg:

Actually it was their 2nd home shutout in 40 years (since after Shula's first year). The first was in 2001.

(Their most recent shutout was losing 3-0 to PIT in 2007.)

  • In reply to tomburg:

Are we all in the ticket race? or just the regular bloggers who been here for over a year? like me who is goin on his third year, haha I just had to put that in there.

  • I'll go ahead and re-post this link since it seems apropos --
    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Do-the-Bears-have-a-championship-defense.html

And heck, might as well post his game notes from last night too -- http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Game-notes-BearsDolphins.html

  • No way I am first!

I was so worried about last night's game - not because I doubt the Bears, but because we have certainly been in this situation before with Miami.

Great game Peanut, my favorite Bear!! Loved watching the D beat up on the Dolphins.

I want those tickets!! I am more than prepared to hit the road and watch my Bears show Vick what's what.

  • I love the team played last night. It wasnt to sexy but controlling the clock and running the ball was sweet.

Are you ready my fellow Bloggers. Our real test of the season is coming, and we will see if this team is a Championship team. I strongly believe we can beat anyone of those teams on our schedule!
    ENJOY IT! DA BEARS!

  • It kinda irks me when guys show up who have been rarely seen or heard all year come by and say "I want those tickets!"

Here's hoping that Blogfather picks out contributors to the blog, and not just participants.

  • In reply to gpldan:

+100000000 The tickets gotta go to the regulars, who are on this site everyday.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

I am on the site every day, just don't like to argue as hard as many do.

  • In reply to sjvl:

No need to argue, bitching and moaning is fine.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

And plane tickets. First class. From Bangkok.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    First time we

  • In reply to Crowned:

"I told my girl I was going to require a car BJ if we shut them out"

You can have the tickets Crown. You are my personal hero.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

I agree, Crown gets the tickets for inventing the fear boner.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Damn it that's not fair. The fear boner is from the show "The League". Crown you plagiarizing bastard.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Is this years defense better the the '06 crew. I'm not completely convinced of that, but they just might be. The are playing at a very high level and are getting stronger every week. Urlacher also said he thought they were a better D than '06. I'm just glad to have a killer D back. The worst thing for me over the past few seasons has been the terrible defensive performance by our beloved team. As Bears fans we have been accustomed less than stellar offensive teams, but could ALWAYS rely on our D to keep us in every game. Or, at least have our opponents know they are in for a very hard time.

I know I'll take some shit for it, but I disagree with the calls to pull Webb out of the line. Yes, he had a bad time last night against Wake, but anyone we have to put in there would as well. The guy is one of the best rushers in the league right now. More than that though, I think we need to keep the same players, in the same positions on the line for the remainder of the years. Now that Tice has created a serviceable unit we need to let them stay together as a unit without weekly musical Oline changes. Line play more than any other group in football needs to have the players know not only their position, but how the guys around the react to a given situation. They need to play as a unit. They cannot do that if the unit changes every week.

  • In reply to mikev:

It wasn't just last night Mike, it's every time Webb takes the field ... he's just too slow on the pass-blocking.

  • In reply to mikev:

No personal opinion of the guy but I always found Trac's blog postings very insightful and he always had some very good opinions about the Bears.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Yep, best defense in terms of average points against at 14.6, with a maximum of 23 points against. We kept down many teams that have put at least 30 points multiple times, including the Cowboys, Lions, Bills and Packers. I don't have a bad word to say about them.

Cutler, on the other hand, has got to get smarter. He could have had about five picks easily last night. I love that he came up with so many big throws (and runs) on 3rd down, but if he doesn't protect the football a week from Sunday, we are going to get crushed.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

True that! That fucking guy needs to be smarter. He needs to learn to check down. Better mechanics as well.

  • In reply to Grizzly559:

maybe Cutler can spend a few years in Prison like Vick to improve his mechanics lol

  • In reply to Ufficio:

Who the fuck is Bob Papa and why were we required to listen to his ass talk about diabetes? I've had enough insulin talk for a couiple years. Give the fucker a snickers and throw em out there.

Cutler has VERY little pocket presence. That much of a mental clock for getting rid of it. This is part of the reason he has gotten hit hard so many times this year. (See the sack from last night. The ball should have already been out) I don't know if it's just b/c he's a tough fucker whose willing to hang in until something develops or that he just doesn't feel pressure and have that sixth sense.

  • In reply to Crowned:

    Great!

  • In reply to Crowned:

I hope I get those tickets man! FUCK! im already planning out my plane ticket and hotel room. hahaha

  • In reply to gpldan:

hey, I haven't posted on here in a LONG time (mainly because I forgot my log-in and password) but please believe that this is the FIRST place I come to read about my Bears all week.

  • In reply to salcantar06:

That's simply not good enough. No tickets for you! (in Seinfeld Soup Nazi voice). Just joking man, nice pic.

  • In reply to Crowned:

lol! I have a soup Nazi where I work! and ya that old man was cool as shit, I met him at training camp 2yrs ago.

  • In reply to salcantar06:

Well, I ain't even gonna go as far to say if we have a championship team...we still got a long way to go and a lot to prove yet. Yes the defense did a great job last nite..again, against a lot of 2nd and third string players.
And the offense played better as well, working the run game...but still was not a dominating factor when we struggled in the red zone again!
I don't mean to burst anyones bubble here but the Eagles..Patriots..and Jets games will tell the story. Not to mention the division replays. I'm happy with the way things are right now, but by no means excited.

  • In reply to RogerMinton:

I agree with you. I think it so very pussy of Rosenblogger idiot to slink away this week in the Tribune. Did anybody notice this? Steve-o has nothing to say this week, because there is no snotty snark to be had at the Bears expense this week. I hate that guy.

HOWEVER - I don't want to get caught up in all this "Do we have a Super Bowl team?" talk, which is so much mental roadhead.

We whipped a totally fucked up team on their home turf. What's good to take away is that their D is still decent, and we put up 16 against them. Nothing to write home about, since we had to settle for 3 FGs at the start and ran a lot of shitty run plays on first down.

  • In reply to RogerMinton:

Miami's defense wasn't injured, that was a good test for us, zone-blitzing. Webb failed the teat, but that's no surprise. Kevin Shaffer please.

  • In reply to salcantar06:

The Soup Nazi was played by Actor, Larry Thomas and no, he did not normally speak with any type of foreign accent.

"NO soup for you. TWO Years!"

    It's STILL funny stuff.

I often yell it at the bar when the bear defnse denies a first down.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

If I heard you shout that out at a bar during a defensive stop, I'd buy you a round Al.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Thank you, Crown. It HAS gotten positive response. The trick is not to wear it out.

Manning's hit on Bess late last night would DEFINITELY have illicited a "NO soup for YOU!" had a been at the bar.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Tix? Did somebody say Tix?

Congrats to MB on the new bambino. Hope Mom, Dad and esp Bambino are doing fine.

I don't care if we did smoke a beat up team last night. We still smoked the fuckers. The D was awesome. It's too bad Roach didn't come up with that blocked pass behind the LOS. That was an easy 6. People can bitch all they want about us being lucky. Yes we have been but so what? Every team gets lucky once in a while. We've had nothing but bad luck with injuries for the last 3 years and nobody was throwing a pity party for us, so fuck them.

Our running game was pretty mediocre last night but it kept their D on the field all night. Forte had about 50 yds on 4 runs (one for 20 and three for 9-10) and the rest of his carries were 2-4 yds with a few negative runs. Good enough to be effective. Loved the TD. It's about time we pounded one in from in close. Robbie was perfect last night and even Brad had a good game (with some fortuitous bounces). Cutler didn't look great but he was good enough. Love to see him move around in the pocket and take off once in a while. Note to Jay; please learn to slide if you're not going for the first down.

Hester is a game changer on ST's and I can't imagine him not being back there for the rest of the year.

Webb had a tough game but one of those four penalties was totally bogus. Tice/Martz have to give him some help with speed rushers.

The way our D is playing we have a chance to win every game. I don't think we will but we should be in every game. Hope our O keeps improving.

    BEAR DOWN BIOTCHES!!!!!!!!!

  • In reply to gpldan:

And how about the strong Bears Nation of fans that made the trip to Miami? Fucking impressive. Looked like more Bears fans were in attendance. Bears and Peanut chants. Right before Theisman said that we travel as well as any one in the league besides maybe the Steelers, I called it out. We have a strong fan contingent at almost every road game. The fans redeemed some of the quietness I've been hearing at Soldier recently.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Hey, I went to the first pre-season game in SD and personally saw A SHIT LOAD of bears' fans there. I even overheard a few Charger fans say "Shit, there's a lot of fucken bears' fan here." I remember specifically, it was the 3rd quarter, by then our 3rd stringers were getting spanked, and there was a crew of about 4 fans in Bear's jersey, walking around the stadium still waving the Navy Blue and Orange flag to a hail of jeers. It brought a tear to my eye...And that was just the first preseason game.

On a side note, I also witnessed an interesting couple, A dude all decked out in Bears stuff, and his girl, all decked out in Packer stuff...star-crossed lovers...

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

I WAS THERE DUDE! I was 16 rows behind the Bears Sideline.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Let's hope Cutty's lack of pocket presence doesn't get him killed. He doesn't seem to have that sixth sense to feel when pressure is coming. I don't know whether its because he's such a tough fucker that he'll wait and wait in there for something to develop or he just doesnt't feel it, but's its part of the reason he's been hit hard so many times. (See sack from last night. Ball should have been out and/or he's got to feel that guy coming).

  • In reply to Crowned:

His pocket presence is improving crown.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

He is certainly improving in picking up and seeing the blitzes coming at the line. That was evident last night, especially with that little dump to Olsen for a first in the red zone. He's seeing the safety and corner blitzes better. Maybe Milloy's big game forced Cut to work on that.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    +1

  • In reply to Crowned:

Sorry for saying the same thing 50 times. The site showed error messages, and now I am stuck with it.

Guess I made my CONTRIBUTIONS for today, right?

    Damn, you people are mean.

  • In reply to sjvl:

Actually we are mostly just mean to chicks, apparently. But you probably already know this if you read the blog everyday.......

  • In reply to brocklanders:

I apologize for my overt and sexually aggressive post to Bears Chick. She does look cute from her picture and seems to have a good sense of football and humor. So, I'll cool it with my headboard talk.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Well, how DARE she be overtly attractive.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Apologies are admirable Crown. Nice one man. Huddle 'round our Chicks!

  • In reply to brocklanders:

You offer a different and unique perspective usually wrigley. How do you see the next 6 weeks going for the Bears?

  • In reply to Crowned:

A month ago I thought we were in good position because of the rest of the conference landscape, even though I had little confidence in this team winning winnable games. Now we have won three winnable games in a row to put us at a shocking 7-3. Unfortunately, the rest of the NFC has gone from remarkably mediocre to remarkably strong. I don't think we can't get all that excited until the packers slow down. As fun as fun as winning three in a row is, their current run of form has been much more impressive than ours. I think the bucs get exposed and the eagles/ giants beat each other up and maybe we get the last wildcard over the loser of those two. We're not going into lambeau and beating the pack the way we are playing. They are far too complete, and they are responding to their injury concerns with unbelievable success.

  • In reply to sjvl:

    1) if you read the blog like you said you did, you'd know this is pretty tame compared to how it can be.

    2) have you ever thought of it as you being sensitive?

    ;-)

  • In reply to sjvl:

I LOVE winning on Thurs (not that it happens much).

ONE, we got a road victory, and a short week, out of the fucken way, and those are always tough, I don't care what haters say.

TWO, this gives our team an extra 3 days of rest, which we're gonna need to chase Vick down.

THREE, I can really prepare myself to root against the Fudge and other teams that might threaten my beloved bears...I mean, I have extra time to make Voodoo dolls of Rodgers and Matthews...For Matthews I just borrow the hair from a Barbie...

Four, there are gonna be some VERY good games this week, though I'm unsure who to go against in some of them:

Pack v Vikes...easy call here, going against Pack for obvious reasons. ONLY a totally irrational borderline crazy hatred for Faver can make a bears' fan root against the Queens in this one. I'm not quite there yet.

Eag V Giants...If the Eag lose, that means they'll prob be that much more desperate and motivated against us, not to mention that would put the Gmen ins sole possession of first in their division, and tie us in the NFC (which they own the tie breaker, obviously). However, if the Eag win, that would mean even more momentum...

Pats v Colts...always a good one, and a little bit less immediately relevant, but we do play Pats in a few weeks. Same as Eag - do we want to face a desperate Pats team, or a confident rolling one?

Steelers V Raiders...this has nothing to do with us, but I just find it an intriguing match-up.

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

Call me crazy but I can't pull for the Fudgies. I just can't. However, I hate the BiQueens more than any other team. I felt this way BEFORE they got Favre so now my hatred for them has a nitrous injection.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Why would you root for the Packers?

It is to the Bears' advantage for them to lose Sunday.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

Not rooting for either team. I hope they pound the piss out of each other.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I love watching the media slowly realize they'll need to finally adjust their story for the 2010 Bears. It may be true our combined teams beaten have only won 20 games (more after this weekend) but we stopped Si.com top 10 teams three times, and top 20 teams several times as well. It's too bad the mainstream media can't appreciate this team.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

This calls for a GODFATHER quote:

    "It's BUSINESS, Sonny, not personal."

A Packer loss Sunday is better for the Bears, BUSINESS-wise.

Rooting for a Queen's loss because you hate Narcissus is PERSONAL.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

I'm rooting for the Queens, but for Favre to get a dislocated cock on the last play of the game ajsut as he throws the game-winning TD. Giants to concuss the shit out of Vick ...

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Keep getting error messages, keep posting same stuff over and over. I'm done - - for today - - unless of course I win those tix!!! :)

Best of luck to everyone who wants them. GO BEARS!!!!!!

  • In reply to sjvl:

Don't take it personally. Can't saying playing the "girl card" won over many posters. Yes some of the guys are misogynists, oh well. Toughen up a little. Laughing at yourself helps to defuse most situations. Not trying to give you a hard time and I'm glad you're posting. Trust me on this one, don't get into a pissing match with the regulars. There's nothing to be gained by doing it. We may get all pissy with each other occasionally but we stick together. I'm only a semi-regular but it's a fun group. Yeah, we can be dickheads but we're all Bears fans. Just hang in there.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Good shit Canada. Going to NOLA for New Years. Galactic at Tips. Cannot wait!

  • In reply to Crowned:

Lucky bastard! Whenever I go out on NYE it seems like it's always some over priced, lame-ass party. Of course, where I live isn't exactly conducive to drawing great bands. Oh well. Have fun and watch out for those girls with something extra. There's lots of them in NOLA.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Well I didn't know she was a girl when I called her out for demanding the tickets. I even called her a guy, so it wasn't misogyny.

My point is solid, the regulars should get a say-so in who gets the tickets. Blogfather should put it up to a vote. So far, Crown has two votes.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I'm regular. I think it's the high fiber diet.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I only got to take one shot last night and that makes me sad. I demand more touchdowns!!!

But the D looked good and Jay didnt screw up too badly. I like that their commiting to the run and Maynard actually had a couple good punts.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Didn't have you in mind at all GP. Just a general comment. It seems like Bears Chick took a little too much shit for a short sighted comment a while back.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

She didn't say a damn thing wrong. Got plain old pistol-whipped ...

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

It's all good. You can't scare me away that easily! Didn't try to play the "girl card", just saying not all fans are male. I know, that may be a shock to your systems.....

  • In reply to sjvl:

We wondered that for a while ... glad to have ladies on board, might clean the joint up some ...

Glad to see you aren't taking it personal. Oh yeah, one other thing. The software for this blog is Fortran so watch out for the dreaded double post!

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Fortran. Dude. Old skool. 1000 points for antiquated mathematical software reference.

I'll protect you little sister. I've got a six-shooter, four bullets, and enough jelly cola bottles, fizz-bombs and ritz crackers to see us through until dawn.

I thought I was first, but not. Sue me.

Don't care if you're irked, GPL. I don't often comment, but do read the blog every day. Being a fan does not mean you always have to yell at everybody.

Nope, I wasn't first. Thought I was for a minute there though. Sue me.

So sorry to irk you. I read every post on this blog, but don't always feel the need to comment. Next you're going to say I am not a Bears fan, eh?

And while you're assuming things, consider this: I am not a guy. I am the most dedicated female Bears fan you know. Deal.

  • In reply to gpldan:

So I wasn't first. Thought so when writing it. Sue me.

I read this blog every day, and no, don't always contribute to the comments section. Don't see how that makes me any less of a fan than you.

Oh, and I am not a "guy". I am the most dedicated, diehard female Bears fan ever. Get over yourself.

I live in PA, and I despise the Eagles. Almost was beat up in Philly for wearing my orange 33 jersey. I want to see the Eagles lose and lose big.

  • In reply to sjvl:

relax, Your not here often and when you are I suggest that you dont try to flame any of the regs. We joke around like that here, but you would know that if you came around more often. DUECES!

  • In reply to sjvl:

So let me get this straight: You were first or weren't first?

I respect youre a female fan and would travel so far for the beloved. This is a huge game and the posters that keep this thing going regularly feel like they should get first shot. I don't see anything wrong with that. Keep coming back though. Was it a dude or female that threatened to beat you up for the Peanut jersey? That's messed up.

  • In reply to Crowned:

    Rememeber Boys & Girls,
It's not WHEN you post, it's WHAT you post.

And, technically, isn't mayor Blogfather ALWAYS "first" ?

All guys, more than one. Actually, I was really fearful to go in the bathroom, but the women were cool about it, even laughing and saying I had courage. It appears I was not first, although I thought I was when writing it. No biggie!

Multiple guys were real idiots at that game. One tried to hocker (sp?) on me, but I saw it coming and ducked out of the way. Another threatened me right in my face, people threw stuff at me, and on and on. I was actually afraid to go to the bathroom, but the women were pretty cool about it - laughing and saying I had courage.

I was proud to wear my jersey and flaming orange hat. I could not believe what jerks they were - it's no wonder they have a jail in their stadium.....

  • In reply to sjvl:

I cannot believe dudes would do that to you. Just pathetic sjvl, seriously.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Pathetic, yes, but I was warned. Didn't believe it, but it is true. They are awful.

  • In reply to sjvl:

Men suck. It's true. I always give props to gentlemen when I come across them, which is very rarely. Good manners cost nothing, and it's nice to be nice.

  • In reply to sjvl:

Oh and if I'm lucky enough to win the tickets I swear to you I will fly out to the game! You in Fresno?

  • In reply to sjvl:

Another chick, yay! I knew we could balance out the chromosomes here. What does Sjvl stand for?

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Simmons on Vikings-Packers game:

"This blowout Packers win will be marred by Aaron Rodgers getting suspended for unveiling his Cell Phone Dong touchdown dance."

Imagining Rodgers scoring a TD, pulling a cell phone out of his sock, sticking it his pants, faking taking a picture of his junk and sending it along. I'm dying here.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

If Aaron Rodgers did that, I would personally call JA and ask him to trade Snickers for AR.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I wonder if Ritchie Incognito gets alot of "Where's your disguise?"

  • Really interested to see how these tickets are given out. Is that 4 central or eastern time Jeff?

  • Really interested to see how these tickets are given out. Is that 4 central or eastern time Jeff?

  • I'm not a fan of Theesman and Millen either. But the worst analyst award, in my opinion, would have to go to Buck and Aikman. Buck needs to stick to baseball(kind of like Gumble needs to stick with olympics). And Aikman... That dude is the biggest hater of NFC North teams ever! He needs to stick to slurping the frumunda off old saggy cowboys.

  • In reply to Church:

Buck is fucking horrible. Did you hear his call when Moss fake mooned the Fudgie fans? He carried on like the guy raped his mother. I'll bet if you asked most Fudgie fans they thought Moss' fake moon was funny. I can't stand Moss and I thought it was hilarious.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Agreed, Buck blows. He's a Chicago hater. He hates the Cubs because of his dad and it just converts to the Bears when he does those broadcasts. He shouldn't be allowed to do Cubs or Bears games, stupid biased bastard.

  • In reply to jbenton:

Is that really his name? Named after a homosexual cowboy prostitute. Lordy.

  • In reply to Church:

Totally agree with you. But Jon Gruden is the biggest douche in the world. I hated hearing his bullshit from the Bears/Pack game. I swear to God he needed a whole case of chapstick after sucking on Rodgers cock for the whole game.

  • Made a goddamn mess on my console, but nothing a little windex and razor blade can't fix. I'm going to the game. I want a regular to get the ticks. If I win, I'm giving them to a regular. I recommend it being decided either by DBB trivia, a tricycle beer marathon race like in Revenge of the Nerds, or elimination staring contests (first to get a semi-fear bone loses)

  • In reply to Crowned:

Crown, what you need to do is drink Pineapple juice before and stay away from the asparagus and she wont be spitting it everywhere. Dman it make her swallow that shit.

  • In reply to jbenton:

I was gonna say something about asparagus, but you beat me too it JAB! Good work man. Rule number 1: No spitting allowed. It wasn't her fault I unleashed loads for days on her.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Well Played Crown. It always comes back to the Asparagus when spitting is mentioned. never gets old.

  • Bears D was great last night, but you've got to give a hat tip to Miami's decimated line. That being said you've got to be excited to see them tested against the Eagles. The way the front 7 is playing right now the Bears Defense is probably one of the best equipped units in the league to try and limit Steve Elway..errr...Mike Vick.

Vick's worst game came against a somewhat banged up Colts D in Philly. Obviously, we play a similar style and are really healthy as a team right now (hopefully Pisa gets well in time). The Eagles line isn't that good either but they've been using max protect and thinking big play to obvious effect. As long as Pringles/Daniel Manning don't have a super bowl moment the Bears should be able to limit the bombs. Lovie and Co at times seem painful willing to concede first downs, but I think you have to test Vick and Reid's resolve and patience to slant, screen, scramble for 5-15 yards at a time. Make Vick show you he can drop back 40+ times with out throwing a pick. Make Reid show you he has plays that can reliably pick up 3rd and 1.

Watching the Redskins their defense relies really heavily on 2 guys: LeRon Landry and Brian Orakpo. Vick neutralized them both. The Redskins often used Landry to spy on Vick. While this wasnt terrible effective in limiting Vick as a runner, the real problem is how badly exposed it left their secondary. You're left with DeAngelo Hall, whose as likely to create a big play for the other team as yours, and a bunch of other guys just praying not to get beat. With our linebackers hopefully we can limit Vick less predictably and without creating another glaring mismatch. With Orakpo, getting one guy around the edge just really doesn't create much advantage. It leaves Vick with too many options still in terms of stepping up or escaping outside and then attacking as he sees fit. Last night the Bears were repeatedly able to get pressure from multiple angles. They'll need to maintain play up and down the line. Especially getting pressure up the middle, with stunts, well timed blitzes and collapse the pocket. Get to Vick or make him get the ball out fast. Force him out to his right if possible.

Gonna need a huge game from Julius and Marinelli. But unlike the Redskins, the Bears D is playing well at pretty much every spot on the field right now. If the Bears have a Championship defense, will know it next Sunday.

  • In reply to reprisal:

    Good stuff!

  • In reply to reprisal:

    +1 on the Colts D.

Rod Woodson said the Cover 2 was the best chance of containing him. We have to keep Chris Harris the fuck away from the field however. Play Melton and Big Toe the whole game, and pray for Briggsy to come back.

  • I can never finish during road head, concentrating too hard on driving...

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

I usually have to pull over and focus or just trow her in da backseat and finish with some poundtownage. The one time I nutted on I-55 while driving I honestly thought I was going to get in a life-altering accident. I envisioned myself dying with a huge bone-dog. I saw my own open casket funeral. My parents were crying in front of the casket and I had a raging boner still sticking up. I know that's impossible, but that's what I envisioned.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

That may be bordering on too much information, Coach!

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Too much or not enough. I vote for the latter.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Re-posting from the end of the previous thread...

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Thanks for the wishes FQ (missed a shout out to you last thread my brother) and Canada.

    Good posts above.

Tix to a regular (poster) only

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Hey MB, I guess you missed my congrats so... Congrats dude!

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    Favorite play of that game.

Late third quarter, it was third down, Cutler had a ton of time, he moved in the pocket, and ALMOST threw it over the middle of the field, INSTEAD he pulled it back down and tossed it to Knox on the sideline for the conversion.

Thats what I like to see.

  • I'm withdrawing my vote for crown and voting for myself. Coach in

  • The only guy on the 06 squad that is no longer playing is MIKE BROWN, and he would be the cat's ass on this club..

I expect to see a lot more Major Wright against the Jackson/Maclin Eagles. Chris Harris will play on obvious running downs, until Vick audibles out and tries to exploit him.

Rod Marinelli has found his home calling the shots on this D. He is a leader.

I won some dough last night. Wifey has no clue, and will be out of town in a couple weeks. Ahhhhh, it's good to live in Vegas.

  • In reply to PhantomOne:

What is it with all the kids doing so well at the WSOP ? And why do they all play like idiots when they're on TV? See the guy who went out at tenth place ? French-Candian dude. Called all-in, his whole tournament on KQ suited. Ducheyne!

  • Week to week is proven again.

3 Weeks ago the Fins look like wild card contenders.

Today they look like a train wreck.

Oh, and, Jamarcus Webb, hopefully, you'll continue to improve and cut down on those holding calls (ONE, for sure, was a weak call by a zebra) but given the choice between holding and risking a blast to your Qb, you hold!

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

How does the dude cut down on holding calls? Not hold and let them run around him quicker? He's too big and slow, he's killing us. Stick Lance Louis or Shaffer back in there.

  • Thanks Doc. We godless commies have to stick together.

  • Yeah, I meant to say the only guy that would reaslly make this team better... even still, I shouldn't have omitted Alex Brown.

  • Good call Doc. They actually made some good points last night and called out some of the same things I was seeing.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

    ...you commie pinko profit-hater.

  • Eyeburn Rodgers, sounds good. And Theishole is 'eyebrows'. What a narcissistic asshole.

  • Sail on, Silver spoons ...

  • I loved the segment on Sideline Yoda's Loaf-list that he grades players on:

Changing speed. Getting velcro'd. Staying on the ground etc. Marinelli's the glue for our champ defense, and how could anyone question otherwise?

No defense in the league ...

    * allows fewer points

    * stops the opposing offense on 3rd down better than we do

    * allows fewer passing TDs

    * has caused more fumbles (I loved Urlacher calling out some media head on their reference to 'turnovers' - the Bears make 'takeaways'.

    * has a balder middle linebacker

    * has players called Butter, Pringles, Peanut, Child Support, Big Toe, Eight Ball, Izzy, Hitman ...

    and ...

    * only one team has more interceptions than we do (Eagles)
    * only one team allows fewer rushing yards

If that's not a championship defense in this conference at least, then show me one.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    who's Eight Ball?

  • They all picked the Bears to win too. Not that I care.
