Redskins at Bears Game Preview

It is the game that will let us know what to expect from the remainder of the 2010 campaign.  Are the Chicago Bears capable of holding their division lead over the next two months, keeping the charging Packers and Vikings at bay?  Or are the Chicago Bears bound for a season's worth of scoreboard watching, as they clamor to stay above .500 and dream of wild cards and first-round playoff exits?  Just who are the Chicago Bears?

YOUR CAN'T BLOCK MY MOTHER CHICAGO BEARS
over
Washington Redskins
Why do I like the Chicago Bears this week?
  • I always like the Chicago Bears.  (But I'm going to make my prediction this week as a list of things I believe the Bears will do to win.)
  • I think the Bears, if they get Lance Briggs back, will bottle up the stretch runs of Ryan Torain to the outside and force the Redskins to be one-dimensional.  Speed to the edges is usually the Bears' defensive strength.  In the past, against this defense, cutting back up the gut has been most successful.
  • I think our return game is hot right now, especially if you consider Danieal Manning's ludicrously overturned touchdown of a week ago that would have beaten the Seahawks.  The last time the Bears played Mike Shanahan, a thrilling overtime win in Week 12 of 2007, Devin Hester delivered one of the greatest special teams performances in the sport's history.  I don't think Shanahan forgets and I think he'll greatly shuffle his game plan accordingly - giving the Bears even better field position.
  • I think Donovan McNabb will have success throwing to Chris Cooley over the middle and Santana Moss under Tillman on the left side but I don't think McNabb is the kind of quarterback who can accurately hit the slant route on thirds and less than five.  When McNabb throws a slant, it has just as good a chance of going the other way for six as it does moving the chains.
  • Graham Gano v. Robbie Gould.  I like our guy.  Especially at home.
  • I think Jay Cutler and Mike Martz know they are a poor performance away from facing a fourteen-day onslaught of questioning from blood-hungry media types and angry rants from playwright/bloggers.  I expect to see the chance-taking reduced to a minimum and a game plan heavy with runs, screens and quick tosses to our speedy receivers on the outside.  At least that's what I'm hoping for...
  • I think Devin Aromashodu is going to make a very big play in this game on a wide-open crossing route.
  • I think we're going to allow 4 sacks.
  • I think we're not going to allow a safety this week.
  • I think Brad Maynard is going to punt better than he did last week.
  • I think I know this opinion is not qualifiable but I think the Bears simply play better when people are treating them like second-rate citizens.  They have lost two games this season.  One off a thrilling victory over the Packers and the other off a blowout win over the Panthers, wherein Todd Collins threw a hundred interceptions.  The Bears don't handle success well (see: 2007) and thrive when they have to get off the mat.  They're on the mat this week.  It's time to get the hell off.

    Redskins Die!

    Mad Martz will adjust!

  • now my real comment:

I listened to Dan McNeill of the Mac and Spiegel show on the Score actually admit that he wants the bears to fail. And this fucking terd wonders why Jay is so guarded in his press conferences.

Because he is not safe in his own city. The team's own "fans" want them to do badly. How fucking messed up is that? 4-2 you fucking cocksmokers. I'm going to be a fucking wrecking ball at the game this weekend and we will prevail.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Give em hell, waffle, give em hell.

As irritating as it can be, I can't imagine why someone would pay serious dough to go to a game at Soldier Field, particularly when the Bears are in sole possession of 1st place in the NFC North, and then sit on their hands?
What is the point? If they're not cheering now, when the fuck will they?

Rex Ryan loves the hype and national spotlight. He grasps attention harder than his morning double down. He's a cocky fatanski, but he knows he can back that shit up with his squad. Different type of train he's running that's for sure.

    The Tribe?

    Called Quest or Mohican?

I'm an honorary Jew, as I was recruited to play on a Maccabi (spelled right?) basketball squad in 8th grade.

Can I use that to get my free trip to Israel?

  • In reply to JohnGalt:

You have to be under 30 to do the birthright trip. But, if you say you were an ex Maccabi star named Schlomo, they might let you board.

I played in a high school bball game against Ida Crown, an all jewish school junior year in high school. The game was a regional state qualifier game. The score kept going back and forth and was tight throughout. With about a minute left and us down one we call a timeout. My friend, who was gaurding what many local prognosticators called the Michael Jordan of jewish Chi-town high school basketball, told me in the the huddle "I'm gonna take that kid's kippah off when he drives, so look for the outlet." I didn't really believe him. But, when they inbounded the ball, my friend got right in the kid's grill and purposefully grazed his head so the kippah would fall. The bobby pin didn't hold and it went to the ground. The star immediately went to pick up his kippah and I went in and ripped the ball. I outletted to my boy who hit the kippah off and we ended up winning by three. Moral of the story? Do whatever it takes to win. You show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser.

Love your Tribe Called Quest references Willie. Check out Q-tip's solo album Amplified. One of my favorites. That dude spits like he should be professor in a college philosophy class.

Posse, I think u have to decide who to drop.

  • In reply to dutsami:

I did - I think it's just a matter of waiting until Saturday for the trade to go through now. It'll be interesting to see this weekend who regrets giving up who!

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

maybe you have to get him out of ur lineup or click somthing, it says if we both unlock dunno wtf that means.

  • In reply to dutsami:

Yeah, he's on my bench now; I'm pretty sure the trade will process on the 23rd.

  • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

Unlike many on this blog (and I don't blame them), I'm not pessimistic yet. I think 85 said it best when he referred to the statistically "great", 2-4 Chargers. HOWEVER, I do agree with Jeff that this is a MUST MUST Win lol (I think the Detroit, Packers game were both Must wins too, if I recall correctly).

5-2 going into the bye would put us in a SUPREME spot, esp in the topsy-turvy NFC and keep us at arms length from the Fudge and the Queens. BUT 4-3 would unleash crippling criticism for two weeks straight that would deflate this unit, I think, beyond repair.

BTW, until we win at least 10 games, EVERY game is a must win. And even if we win 10 games, then there's home-field advantage and the bye to play for, so no rest for the weary.

I don't put much emphasis into most stats - I think they're more entertaining than anything else - however, the one stat that does raise my eyebrow is recent record against upcoming opponents. Lovie has yet to beat the Skins...but then again, we beat Dallas this year for the first time in like a decade, so here's to starting new streaks...

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

[Martz said "the littlest things" are responsible for the Bears' ineptitude on third downs. "A tipped ball, a slip on a route, there's just some goofy things that have happened to us," he said.]

Over 80% of the time Mike ? It's just all crazy accidents ? @#$%!

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

    Right on!

The only stat that REALLY matters in a game is the one on the scoreboard.

  • In reply to KissMyButkus:

Hey guys, I need the collective DBB help.

I've been making Xtranormal videos of DBB stories, like this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ikwrm3uYRk

I did one with Crown's jewish kippah inbound story, but it wasn't funny. I did another one where #16 comes up to Irish and tells him he's the biggest Bears fan, then the camera pulls back and Irish is standing below him, and it finishes with "I said put the lotion on or else you get the hose again."

But that sucked. The voice saying L O L isn't funny.

I need a funny script for DBB for Xtranormal. I guess I can break out the credit card and buy a few more sets and characters, I've just been using the defaults.

Maybe Blogfather can do some screenwriting for us.

Roy Williams. No contest. Knox might have two grabs. I think we're going to get our asses kicked. Torain the train is coming as Roy points out in his Redskins vid. He's right, if we don't tackle properly, we're screwed. And that no-down-linemen DL they have could really mess with our OL.

Not to sound patronizing but although raised Catholic, I was always fascinated by Jewish history and culture. Grew up in an area with a large Jewish population (Northbrook/Deerfield), two of my sister's father-in-laws are Jewish, one of my brother-in-laws is as well and he and my sister are raising their two sons in that faith. On the other hand, my mother's side of the family is Muslim (my line being "growing up, only kid in the neighborhood with an Uncle Ahkbar"). That's probably a paragraph more than anybody here wanted to actually know about me but there you go.

Does that have "Vivrant Thing" AKA "The Day Real Hip Hop Died"? That song single handedly ended my abilty to pay attention to MTV.

When Tip decided to make a Puff Daddy video, I felt a piece of my heart die.

If any of you are unfamilar with Eyedea, that's too bad. He died @ 28 this last weekend. Won a few of those freestyle battles back in the late 90's early 2k's... Puffy offered him a huge contract to be the Bad Boy version of the white rapper I hate who shall remain nameless.

I won't go the "best rapper ever" route that many tend to do once the guy has died (By the way 2pac and BIG would be making crap just like Jay-Z if they were alive today. Sorry.), but the kid has talent.

    Quite philosophical himself.

I know it probably won't matter too much but if you watch most teams with good protection, like the Pats; their lineman and QB all communicate prior to the snap to ensure everyone is on the same page. • In reply to MikeBrownhadaPosse:

I saw Deanna Farve on Good Morning America this morning before leaving on the train. She was there with softball questions from the GMA fluffers, with her pastor - talking about some new book about fighting all the bad things in life with faith.

This is part of a media push, here's the corresponding USA Today bit:

    http://content.usatoday.com/communities/Religion/post/2010/10/brett-favre-deanna-favre-prayer-christian/1

Clearly, the Farve machine is putting on a full court media relations blitz and using Deanna as the pitchman.

Does anybody else find this completely in line with Narcissus personality and disgusting? I have no issues with her faith or her message; the people that want to hear that message are plenty and will fork out the $20 for the book and lap it up.

No, I find the timing of it distasteful.

The GMA lady knew she had to ask about the allegations. Streger has lawyered up, and the NFL has called Brett on the phone. GMA, of course, softballed it. Instead of saying, "how do you feel about your husband texting his junk to a woman who looks like you?" - they instead started by saying Brett doesn't deny it, and how do you feel about all of it?

Deanna gave the weakest "faith gets you through all things" answer I've ever seen, I don't even think she bought the delivery of that line. And, of course, GMA let it drop there.

I can't even tell you how much lower my opinion of Farve fell. Is there a rating below zero? The aw-shucks shakedown of the Vikings for another $10M was pretty bad, but front running your cancer sick wife on her bible tour as a strategy to slow the NFL's investigation down? That - that is something Don Draper would be proud to call his own idea, right there.

  • In reply to gpldan:

"Fighting all bad things in life with faith" - Stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard. Maybe Brett can fight off the lineman that are sacking his ass with faith...maybe he can heal his gimpy arm with faith. Maybe he can make his penis grow to the size of a normal man, if only he had more faith. I purchased a home 4 years ago and now i'm upside down because the housing market took a shit. Maybe if I have enough faith, I'll get my money back.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Oh, yeah... and then there's this ridiculous shit from Martz. Dude just lost most of the last 10or so credibility points I had for him:

"It's a growing process," Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said. "These guys will learn and we're going good, then we'll take a step back and then we'll move on. But I'm excited about who we have, and I'm real excited about the offensive line and the progress we're making. It's going to be an outstanding group, I really believe that."

  • In reply to MB30SD:

It's a little bit like "everybody's a winner at the Special Olympics", isn't it?

When a coach only praises his players in public, it's a bad bad sign. It means that if he blasts them, their fragile egos may shatter.

    Wrong. Wrong. WRONG!

The rest of us get our strength from WITHIN.

Yeah, you and Brett are just so much smarter than the rest of us, Deana ...

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Someone on this blog taught me that though some NFL players are "dickwads" - "they have the skills"...Favre is in that category for me. GPLDAN - Maybe it's the giant hypocrisy that gets to me -faith - the Bible - football hubris / Jenn, Deanna, Brett...

I'm happy to see that this blog recognizes when "the O line" - "Martz" - "Angelo" - "Lovie" - "the defense" and player analysis has been beaten to death.

Bart Farve and his wife are geniuses. They are already looking forward to the future. After retirement, he should have his own TV show like Elliot Spitzer or Rod Blogoyovich. Bart just jacked off to the camera, but there is money to be made from this. The next move is to strangle your wife with a telephone cord, like Warren Moon, and get a post game show. That could be a good jump start to your post NFL career.

  • In reply to TheFifth:

Don't forget a certain linebacker from the Ravens. I won't say he's guilty, but he looks like an accessory to the crime. I could tell a few Bears player stories from the bar, but I'll hold off since no crimes, just infidelity. Remember Charles Martin? He had a problem with a certain white powdery substance. He may have cost the Bears a Super Bowl in '86.

Spot on, man. I guess she's just going with the whole forgiveness thing, which is preached in her religion in fairness, and she can't very well ask for a divorce if she's a 'good Christian'.

Nice post Jeff. I couldn't agree more with your last point. I have noticed for several years, that when the Bears gain momentum and people start talking about them nationally, they let everybody down. They do best when nothing is expected of them and they are underdogs. I want us to win every game, but I don't want the Mike & Mikes or the Bradshaw and Howies of the world to talk about us. The balloon seems to pop everytime the national media brings up da Bears. I'd be happy if they talked about us as a one and done playoff team the rest of the year.

Seriously.. i dont get the Bears hometown fans. They have no appreciation for what a great product they have right there in their own backyard. It's the NFL's quietest stadium for gods sake!

  • In reply to Jlehr:

It's a bunch of yuppies at most home games. The die-hards are all in the north end zone (no seat licenses). Look at the stadium at the start of the third quarter. Between the 20's or 30's, less than half the fans will be in their seats. Sometimes less than 25%. It's a corporate "outing" for half these people, an "event" to say you went to. I've been in those seats, and it's a joke. It's not like the old days.

  • Trac and I already had that one out a long time ago Doc. He gets where I'm coming from I think.

Besides, I'm all about people using religion to rise above and be better citizens... no matter which faith they choose, but saying sexting my junk to some random chick while my cancer survior wife is pregnant because jesus loves me, is fucking whack.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I'd say putting his junk in other people's lady-parts was more hurtful than the odd MMS.

  • +2 (see how I did that)

  • I forgot to factor that in!
