Things To Look For Tomorrow Night

I'll be watching the Bears take on the Raiders from the Redi Room, a small biker bar on Saratoga Avenue in San Jose, California.  The place will have about four people in it and three will be Raiders fans.  (It's amazing out here.  Every tough person likes the Raiders.  All the nice people like the 49ers.)  Here's what I'll be watching.

Cutler and the Receivers.  It seems most teams are giving the starting offenses about a quarter and a half of playing time in these second games and I'd expect the same for Cutler.  In the first game, he zeroed in on Johnny Knox for a pair of completions but I'd expect to see Mad Mike try and incorporate both the Devins and some of the screen package against Oakland.

Pass Rush.  We can bark all we want about the preseason not mattering but if Jason Campbell has the kind of time Phil Rivers had in the pocket, warning flags will be raised around the city of Chicago.  The Bears paid an awful lot of money for a double-digit sack man and are expecting a rejuvenated middle of the defensive line (especially Tommie Harris).  The question will be: when does it start to shows its face?

Establishing the Starting Five.  I would expect that whomever Mike Tice lines up along the offensive line to start the game tomorrow night will be the five guys he hopes to line up against Detroit to open the season.  Who he decides to sub out and when could be the most interesting coaching decision of the evening.

Those are my big three.  What are yours?

  • I'll be looking for a first quarter shutout from our D and long scoring drives from our 1t team O.

  • Jeff, get a picture of you in the middle of the biker bar cheering on Da Bears. Priceless!

  • Secondary - let's see what kind of depth we have there since Major is hurt (ESPECIALLY daniel manning)

O-Line - did they get better or worse from SD? and for the love of GOD can they open a hole in the run game

Hot Rod - can he be a legit D-Coordinator? can he mix up the defensive calls to give opposing offenses nightmares? this (if it ever does) will begin to blossom tomorrow night

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Hot Rod is a great teacher but he doesn't make good personnel decisions. As long as they run defense by committee we may have a fighting chance.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    1. Why are we running screens? Are you cereal?

    2. Pepper's got to the qb but Rivers was smart are got rid of it quick. I want to see Tommie Harris step it up and whoever is the other DE or Nose tackle to show that they can play.

    3. The starting five is established. I want to see the run game explode in a good way against the Raiders. I want to Cutler have all the time in the world to pass the ball.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

I hope we see the special teams not look so "special"

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Boys...have been traveling last two internet or facilty to watch or here....had xm radio in the vehicle but all I heard was from the four letter network(you fu#@$@!#@#rs) much we(Chicago) sucks....thank baby jebus ( my favorite of all the jebuses) I didn't have a hand gun or a piper cub because I may have used both as I took that network down..will be gone again this I hope blogfather and the rest of you gents have a better out look from pre-two than pre-one I will be back early Monday morn to hop on the thread!

  • In reply to nicholsra:

Loboooooooo !!! Come to candy mountain Lobo ! Candy mountaaaiiiinnnnn !

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Sure Jeff, by biker bar don't you mean this?!?

  • In reply to Joseph: that rumba!!!!!!!!!!! bbbbbbbbbbaaaaaaaahhhhhhhaaaaa!

  • In reply to nicholsra:

Priceless Lobo. No matter how the season goes, we'll still have you.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    I found Max.,14397/

  • In reply to Crowned:

Crown....between the beer and cheese consumption..I see blockage in his future.

  • In reply to Crowned:

Personally, I will be looking at the following (in no particular order, and ultimately in addition to much of what has been posted already):

    1) Kahlil vs. Wolfe - We're tossing 1 of them. My vote is, and will always be, Kahlil. Honestly, I feel like you can teach Wolfe's special teams knack to Bell - you can NOT teach Wolfe to not be a 140 lb twerp. Do I see Sproles-ishness in his future? No. I see grocery bags in his future.

    2) Mark Anderson - The only burst he seems to get through the offensive line is on false starts. Gimme Izzy, Wooten, someone with a spark if this guy can't make it happen. As the "Sidney Dean" waxed philosphic in the greatest movie to feature a Harrelson/Snipes combo (Wildcats a close second), White Men Can't Jump - "Even the sun shines on a dog's ass. Anybody can win the lottery." - I have no faith in Mark Anderson. Even Your Boy Roy couldn't make me see the light... One and done. Let's cut our losses.

    3) Tight Ends - Do we see them? I've been Mr. GetridofOlsen for the last year. Have huge faith in Kellen. Love Dez. Think Manu was a waste of money. I will mostly focus on Manu and Kellen as I think they both have the most to prove. Nothing Olsen does will change my mind, and the fact that we're now talking 3rd/4th rounder for him, when 3 months ago it was late 2nd/early 3rd is testament to his lack of descended testacles. Dez is one bad mamma jamma, and if he gets cut it's swan dive off the balcony time. So, Brandon. Can you block? Shit, can you even play? Kellen, my Olsen replacement - do me proud! The phrase of the day is "Stickum".

And additionally, as always with preseason, in order to spice things up a bit... I like to play a little drinking game dedicated to Harry Carey called "Here's a guy": Every time an announcer says "Here's a guy" you take shot of Beam. Works best with any game Collinsworth is announcing. I hate that fucking rat bastard, but he makes for a blurry 4th quarter everytime!

Maybe we'll see some of this. You'll recognize more than a few of these dudes. No audio but great none the less.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

trac...that video says it all...."Passion" in this game boys... "go out and hit someone" and as long as we have this coaching staff with no "passion" my avatar will represent how I feel about this team...sad to say..

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

now that's going to leave a mark..

  • In reply to nicholsra:

Illegal procedure there Trac. Or is it ?

'+1' = 'plus one' as in 'I concur' ...'I am in agreement, add my voice to the bandwagon there'....

So +2, or any number greater thereof, is technically impossible, as one person can only add one voice to support of the argument.

Can I get a witness ? Can we put any plus-sign related tomfoolery to bed here?

    Mike Ferreira.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    Guilty as charged.

  • In reply to JohnGalt:

First, my 3 in order of importance:

    1) Oline: Can these guys give Jay more than 1.7 fucking seconds on protection schemes

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    1. Where are my two gaurds?
    2. all I have to say is...... LDL
    3. Clown Car

  • In reply to nicholsra:

Lobooooo!!! What's up man? Your guard are only going to come next season when we get a GM and HC who know what they fuck they are doing. We gots what we gots, let's see where we gets.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    amen brother..... amen

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB. by the way I think I found a video that explains everything BEARS MANAGEMENT and where LDL is from:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

By they way...I was thinking about changing the avatar...not until our team grows a pair and plays like it.

    I keep screaming this:

  • In reply to nicholsra:

But they have mohawks now lobo, no worries mate.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Man, you REALLY don't like mowhaks.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Just makin hay outta nuttin MB. The heartless "old" Trac still shows it's ugly face from time to time.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I like that Trac too. Bring em both out.

  • In reply to nicholsra:

    I miss the coach, Lobo.

  • In reply to Joseph:

Classic. He's in San Jose, not the castro man. He's more likely to run into a bunch of outsourced N1 Visa holders than gay bikers.

SJ sucks, it's like a normal city, but without a soul.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

For the rest of your life, you get to either ...

    a) Read about Bear's games in the printed press only, the day after they happen ...

    b) Watch the games live in the blue oyster bar from Police Academy

    Which is it?

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I don't mind reading paper all that much...

  • In reply to Joseph:

I'm at a loss for words!

  • In reply to Joseph:

    Here's a few modest goals:
    1) Average 4 damn yards per rush.
    2) Don't give up any sacks, but get at least one sack.
    3) Don't give up any big pass plays.

The Bears are starting to sadly remind me of the Wanny years. Jerry Angelo even said all the pieces are in pwace. Like Wanny, we have musical chairs every year at different positions, this year again being the secondary and offensive line. As others have said, there are problems at every level of management. Hopefully the Bears catch some breaks this year and make the playoffs. Maybe a crazy year like 2001? I would take that, but then I'm afraid they would give Lovie a contract extension.

The Bears could use some more hardworking, dedicated athletes like this former Chicago native:

  • In reply to TheFifth: sure it was the donuts? maybe it's the smoke!

  • No injuries

  • praying they don't start to pull out the clown car!

  • It's not even worth talking about with this group Doc. We are so far from anything even close to that vision. If we get a good GM, a really god one... and Cowher, I think we can start talking. I'll be like a giddy 14 year old girl who just got asked to the dance by the most popular boy in school.... he's soo dreamy!

Oh, and here you go Lobo:

  • In reply to MB30SD:

love it!!!bbbbbbbbbaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaa only in classical skills of CW

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Oh how shall I count the ways?

It would take a new owner, the right GM, Coach, 1 heck of a phenominal draft where we just get crazy lucky and a clone of Walter Payton. We could do it gents, we have the technology.

  • Doc...that team had heart..all of it..and I will have a tear swell up in my eyes every time someone shows a video of that team...that special 85' team..just as I do in the last minutes of the movie "Rudy" it's all about heart.

I believe a leader(coach) does by example and makes his players believe in themselves just like a certain coach on the West coast who has his team believing.

I wish we had "that" coach... he would have our players believing, not like the idiot savant we have.

This captain (Our Coach) has his crew believing this:

  • If no one can replace Payton then I don't think any team will replace the 85 Bear's.

  • It's sad we all hang onto the '85 team but that was a crazy team of characters. From the 2 coaches to about a dozen colorful players. If Walter doesn't fumble deep in Bears territory in the SB I'd bet my life all three playoff games would have been shutouts. That's dominant.

I want to see the OL step up, crisp running and guys WFO down the field catching passes from Cutler.

I want to see the DL cause some mayhem and the DB's look professional. I want to see ST's step up.

As much as everyone loves Samurai, Lovie is probably a better game day coach at this point. That's how bad Samurai is on game day. He will get better and hopefully when he does, he comes home.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Let's see how Mike does this year. The Niners have some talent. They still lack a QB, but they have a OL and a back and a D. I think this is a yardstick year for Samurai Mike.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Until we get a great OL and a great back and a couple near 2,000 yard seasons - we will never regard the Bears in the same way as '85. If we had the Titans OL and Sonic the Hedgehog, we'd be talking about HOF and how close the Bears are to putting it all together.

Forte is not that guy. He's a serviceable back, but the "last" Payton class back was LT, and right now I don't know who it is. If Sonic puts up 2k, then maybe we start talking about him as a great one. But he's more Eric Metcalf than Barry Sanders. Frank Gore? Adrian Petersen? Petersen's career is closest to Dickerson, and I don't think AP ends up with the kind of career that ED had.

Chicago needs a GREAT back to put the shadow of Walter and the 85 Bears to rest. We have a once in 20 year QB at the helm. If we had even somebody like Ray Rice back there, and he's far from great, it would be a good start.

  • In reply to gpldan:

dude rushed for 1,238 with running on 8 in the box and you write him off after an injury year? let's wait to see what Forte does this season before we call it a fluke...

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Ditto. And as for CJ, AP, whoever, let's watch them do it for 9 or 10 years before we put them in 'all-time' discussions ... AP might have the stats so far, but I'm still picking Bo Jackson in a street game.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Once Cutty gets pulled, we're getting what? A Quarter of La Favor and a Quarter of Guiterriez and maybe some Juice to wash it down during garbage time?

I don't see how we get a good feel for what receivers make this squad and which don't. Iglesias better stun me with some fingertip grabs. Scrappy will scrap out there.

I'd like to see Brandon Minor get the rock and see what he can do.

  • In reply to CanadaBear:

Completely agree on Samurai. He's Lovie-lite. Legendary linebacker does not a smart coach make. Much as I hate to admit it, he did some dumb-ass things last year that even Lovie's not capable of.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan: least Samurai would be willing to go to candy mountain and bi@#!!@$ch slap the banana king and give up his kidney....which by the way actually think that the two minions who brought him there were JA and LDL just listen to their voices:

  • In reply to nicholsra:

There should be more Charlie. I guess the guy that created him is dead ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Got jacked for a kidney... that stuff comes from experience... and a lot of mushrooms, so a hooker probably took his kidney.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I am 100% with Johnny here.

That sounds so Angelo and lovie. Cut the guy who was a proven baller last year

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Couldn't Bennett get stuck on IR until the bye week?

  • In reply to gpldan:

    I think so.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

If you go on IR you're done for the year. The physically unable to perform list (PUP) will sit you down for the first 6 games. I'm pretty sure the PUP list is for pre-season only. Once the season starts it's IR or cut the guy.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Well, it's about 1230pm and it's a beautiful day in Chicago. Muggy like Louisiana and gray like Milwaukee and 6 and a half hours til gametime. However, game time in my house today actually started at 6am this morning when i watched you tube videos of past Bears glory on my huge fucking flat screen tv while feeding the little one. Then i made an important decision which consisted of Mimosas and some eggs for breakfast. Now i have completed my chores dictated by my beautiful but occasionally mean Irish Catholic wife. With the chores done and the BBQ starting at my brother in laws (the one from St. Louis who loves the shit out of Martz)at 4pm,there is only one thing left to do and that is to forgo my workout and move straight to a Rum and Coke as i watch every game and program on NFL Network until 4pm. I'm not going to lie, i did switch back and forth to "Bring It On" twice to catch a glimpse of Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku and a young Gabriel Union (HIZZOTT!). A truly great day to be a Bears fan boys. Two quarters of Cutty tonight, no injuries to the top 3 receivers or Pisa, Lach, Peppers and Briggs and i will be a happy man. Cheers!

  • In reply to hollywood1:

I'm with you, Johnny. Cloudy day hear in Oakland as well but I expect to see sunshine in about an hour or two. My lady and I are taking my 100 lb beaver-chimpanzee hybrid(see 2 yo black lab) on a walk down to piedmont ave to score a sandwich or a gyro.

Later I got some Raidah fans comin to my joint to enyoy the game in full HD. A good day to be a Bears fan indeed, my friend.

In the meantime, Da Bears Blog is now auditioning for entertainer of the day.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Signs of life from the long-comatose running game would be nice.
Its a bit tiresome to have to check it for a pulse every week.
The running game sucked last preseason and that set the tone for the regular season. Enough, already.

Oh, and how about let's adjust, pick up a blitz and BURN a defense with a sight adjustment instead of protecting your starting QB by hiding him on the bench and 1 series. Lordy, every time you think Lovie CAN'T get more pathetic he surprises you.

    Bitch, Bitch, Bitch!
According to my DISH Network program guide, NFL Net will show Packers-Seahawaks TWICE Saturday evening but the Bears-Raiders will not appear until Sunday at 10p CDT?

    Well, crap on a cracker!

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

At least Sammurai brings some PASSION to the party. He sure lit a fire under Vernon Davis who in short order gone from useless first round bust to dangerous offensive weapon after Mike got his attention. That,as opposed to part time anestheiologist, Lovie Smith, who seems to inspire nothing but a good nap.

  • In reply to Albertintucson:

    Well said Albert, Well said!

  • Even if we win the superbowl with Cutler, any team we put out there would be second best to 'The Team'. I doubt any team could ever again dominate in the playoffs the way those Bears did. Thinking about how much more awesome the season could have been if Jimmy Mac stayed healthy just messes with the brain. Salary caps just make it impossible. As for this team, teams with a bunch of question marks don't win superbowls ... but let's see where we stand after week one.

Things I'm looking for v the Raiders :

    1) No injuries:

Jay Christopher Cutler to have some dream-like series where none of those nasty Raiders lays so much as a finger on his preciousness. (Le Pew and Gutierrez to get absolutely hammered so we are forced to trade for ...y'know ..and NFL QB. Dixon or Rosenfels please. In that order.)

    2) A nasty O-line :

A statement this week or next would be nice. Wins aren't important, but some signs of life from the line would be nice. Late hits, fights, neck-stamping, knuckle-dusters, clotheslines, chop-blocking, eye-gouging, punching, inmates v prison guard stuff. I want to see Raiders standing around an injured team-mate, with serious-sounding commentators saying "This looks bad ... you don't want to see this happen in a football game ...our thoughts and prayers are with ..."
I want to see running in a northerly direction. We know the snap count, they don't, so what's with this 'moving backwards' on the run-plays? Martz doesn't get to run his smurf routines unless we get a solid run-game going. And either this huge hidden talent in Omelette gets revealed or let's just get Shaeffer in there. For the boys with replay, where was he last week anyway? Is Lovie afraid to have him show up the Omelette?

    3) Shabba :

Can we please anoint our #1 receiver already ?

Produces whenever he is on the damn field? Check.
    Jump-ball ability? Check.
Doesn't mess his routes up and just gets it done? Check.
Big enough to block / non-smurflike ? Check.
Has earned the right to be in receipt of starter's snaps based on performance and ability? Check.

I hope Cutler goes to town on Shabba and he comes away as our top receiver from limited snaps. AGAIN. And makes it perfectly obvious to the rest of the league that he is #1. FOX showed photos of Hester, Knox and freaking Greg Olsen as our top three receivers the other night. Hester and Olsen had one catch for 4 yards BETWEEN THEM ! Shabba is our bride receiver, now let's put the ring on his damn finger

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    Irish... it's fox news dude.

  • You have to love the Larry. He gets excited about Pepe throwing TDs when there's no pass rush, no danger of being hit whatsoever, and absolutely nothing at stake, including his roster position. Iglesias to beat out a guy with a hammy, y'think Larry?

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

it would be unfortunate if Earl Bennett was not a receiver on this team in this offense. The only thing he did last year in his first real opportunity to play was catch every fucking ball thrown to him and got open on other plays where he didn't see the ball but was open for gamewinning touchdowns both times. He is a gamer. That means the Bears will fuck it up.
