Camp Audibles From the Long Snapper

Three days till the unofficial start of the 2010 Chicago Bears season and I can't lie: I'm starting to buy the hype coming out of Bourbonnais.  A year ago I spent the summer trying to curb the enthusiasm of the fans, repeating my belief that the Bears would take until mid-season to find an offensive rhythm.  (They took until December instead).  I think the Bears are going to excite us against Detroit on the first week of the season.

Trading a Tight End?
Sean Jensen wonders if the Bears can afford to trade a tight end before the season starts and it is something worth wondering.  Is it even possible these days to keep four tight ends on an NFL roster?  Does the absence of a fullback on the roster free up the space to suit up Greg Olsen in a back/end/receiver hybrid position?  I'm a believer in never trading away players that can result in points.  I like the combination of Olsen, Desmond Clark, Kellen Davis and Brandon Manumaleuna a lot.

Major Wright a Starter?
If the reports are accurate and Major Wright has performed well in training camp, I have to imagine Lovie Smith will give him every opportunity in the preseason to earn a starting job opposite Chris Harris.  Wouldn't you rather watch a rookie struggle to gain his footing in the league as opposed to seeing Danieal Manning throw away another shot at being a starting safety?  I would.  Danieal Manning's season should consist of his brilliant kick returns and his every so often corner blitz on third and long.

Darrelle Revis
I think the Darrelle Revis holdout is a plot perpetrated by the New York Jets to make their appearance on HBO's Hard Knocks more interesting.  I think Revis will be in green and white before the start of the third preseason game.  But if I'm wrong - and this Revis thing is serious - every GM in the league will be calling Mike Tannenbaum over the next few weeks.  Jerry Angelo better be one of them.

  • In reply to gpldan:

What's that you say? This is a Bears blog? Oh...

    Thoughts on Blogfather's post:

The Samoan sandwich gets the Hawaiian Donkey punch. Right outta town. Both Unga Bunga, who is already hurt and isn't showing anything and Willie T (the actual FB) are gone. Martz don't want no stinkin' traditional FB, no damn I formation shit.

Wright is our new free safety. I hope he has the best rook FS season since Mark Carrier. Why Manning isn't scrimmaging at nickel I have no idea. We need Turenne and Moore as backup corners.

I say we keep Davis, Man-of-moolah, Girly Thor and Dezzy-Loo. Olsen has played FB before, we're only gonna see the offset I at best from Martz, and really, we're not gonna see it that often.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Girly Thor...that is Olsens new nickname, Brilliant! Jeff, can we make that official?

  • In reply to Joseph:

How about Farrah Fawcett ? Oh wait, she died from anal cancer. Pamela Anderson ?

If they scrub Tofu and Unga then they're just proving that the Bears org. Really is one of the dumbest in the NFL. Football without fullbacks? Both of our FBs (not including the phantomic Eddie Williams) are the same weight as Dez, but have a much lower center of gravity. Olsen is Allergic to contact and doesn't know how to hit people as a ball-carrier. Davis is too tall to run the ball. Why are we getting rid of both FBs? Trade My Little Showpony and keep Tofu.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    +100

I like the little I've seen from Tofu. He's a worhorse beast who can catch out the backfield.

  • In reply to gpldan:

1.) I think Davis is the odd man out, Dez is our all around, Olsen can only really receive, NanuNanu can really only block so that kind of leaves him as the project DE to TE that never fully got off the ground, I think if he makes the cut it is by mysterious ijnury so they can pull him through on IR ala Melton 2009.

2.) Yes I would rather see Major start at FS, Harris allowed to go back to his natural SS, and Manning come in for Nickel Corner. So I would rather deal with Wright's growing pains than deal with Manning failing at another safety position, hell I'd rather put up with Steltz's growing pains than to see Manning back there again.

3.) Revis would be a decent addition I suppose but didn't he get beat pretty bad in the AFC Champ game twice, maybe he is the opposite of clutch. I doubt we'd be willing to pay what he will be asking seeing as we looked right over a 4million dollar top 5 FS when we don't have a single FS on the roster.

I think the Unga injury will be stretched out to put him on the IR list as well.

  • In reply to dutsami:

I don't think the dude was ever beaten badly last year FT. Dude is a fucking machine. And no way we have the money to pay him.

  • In reply to dutsami:

Then why keep Olsen? Davis is taller *and* blocks and catches the ball just as well as Olsen. Olsen has more trade value - we could get a 3rd or a fourth for him. Dez is 33 by the way.

Brave words on Revis. If Rod Woodson thinks he's the besy corner in the league, that'll do for me. And even Neon Deion got toasted on occasion.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    "...excite us against Detroit..."

New OC and offensive system, revamped O-line and huge expectations.

Hope you are right on , Blogfather, but I remain skeptical.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Plus fkn one! Experiment free season please ...

  • In reply to gpldan:

We didn't have a pick in the first two rounds, so I don't think we need to settle for the seventh rated safety that fell to us in the third. We need to draft a stud FS in the first round next year and do it right. Draft a man-sized WR in the second, and let Angelo blow the rest.

Harris and Manning as our starting safeties is way safer than trusting a rook who's not even highly rated to begin with. Eric Berry will have a tough enough time adjusting as it is.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    Irish. Please.

Jerry fucking Angelo will be well on his way to destroying some other NFL team's hopes and dreams by the time next year's draft rolls around. Or he'll be doing payroll for a trucking company in Albany.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Hope springs eternal. But what if we have a relatively injury free year and do a safe 10-6 and limp into the playoffs ? Giving that pleb another contract would be truly soul destroying. I can live with Lovie, but not Angelo.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I'd take a rookie that can actually tackle over pussy footing ball slapper D. Manning. If the kid is supposedly the future at FS, throw the kid into the fire, only way he's gonna learn. The only gear I want D. Manning strapping on Sundays is the Staley Bear costume.

    http://assets.chicagobears.com/UserFiles/Image/Staley/staley_mugshot.jpg

And I would give my right testicle for the Bears to go get Revis. Promise :)

  • In reply to FQD1911:

o and Mark Schlereth tweeted me (lol GOD i hate that clown)

Me: "when the Bears make the playoffs, prepare to block me. and prepare to eat all your words about Jay Cutler....."
    Schlereth: "okay."

    THE GAUNTLET HAS BEEN THROWN!!!!

    (sorry for the spamming)

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    Wright to play SS ?

  • In reply to gpldan:

o and the LoveHammer says the starters will play into the 2nd quarter (check the tweets for proof)

now am i a fan of our franchise everythings (QB, RB, LT, WR/KR specialists) being prone to injury? no. but this is a necessary move to make sure the offense clicks (all i want the defense doing is killing ppl for 2 series then get them off the fuckin' field). hopefully the OTAs, mini-camp, and TC pays dividends and the O will come out wrecking shit.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

I was one of the dipshits last year that said we'd go 12-4 or 13-3, i'm going to take the ole wait and see approach this year. I think We'll be better, but I think the Cheesetaints will be better too, and Minny will be just as good or close to it. Our division yields 2 playoff teams this year. I sure hope we are one of them.

And the Bears have a better chance of changing their name to the Chicago Crotch Crabs than they do at getting Revis.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

We weren't to know that Omelette was indeed a fried egg dish and that Orlando Pace had none Coach. We also didn't expect Cutler to shit the bed quite as much.

Ditto on Revis. Green Bay sounds better in front of Crotch Crabs though. Or Minnesota.

I am always fearful of the dreaded "lost in preseason" injury, but under the circumstances an extended 1st exhibition game (the phrase I know the NFL LOATHES) appearance for the starters would seem to be a necessary evil.

McNabb threw some of the wankiest interceptions I've ever seen last year. Check.

    Backs who make it:

    Forte
    Taylor
    Minor
    Wolfe

    Fullbacks that make it:
    Willie T

    Backs who get cut:

    Unga, Eddie Williams

Backs who go to practice squad:

    K. Bell

We carry 3 Tight Ends, and label Olsen a wideout/H-back

Minor is explosive and powerful. He's going to make it.
I know DBB is full of Wolfie haterz, but let me know who is going to replace his skill on punt coverages. The kid is unblockable on the outside on kickoffs as well, he jukes or runs between the legs of blockers, and he's fast and tackles well. Forte and Taylor are a great 1-2 punch, and that will be a lot of it, but if one goes down, I really think they go with Minor. He's speed and power, he fell down the board because he skipped the combine, but he's as good as Rashad Mendenhall.

That's how I see it playing out, barring unknown injuries. I don't know if Man-of-moolah's knee injury is serious, but given how much he got paid, he's sticking around.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I know I gave Willie T the punch earlier in post - and he may go - not sure on roster space, depends on if they want Barnes or go deep at wideout and how they classify Olsen.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Evaluate the Cutler trade.

One full year past, let me know who you would rather have:

    Cutler and Knox

    vs.

Orton, Robert Ayers (SLB) and Max Unger (Center)

Broncos took the 3rd round pick and sent it to the Seahawks, so you have to use that. Seahawks picked Unger, who will probably start for them at center this year. Ayers is a very solid SLB, much better than Jamar Williams but not as good as Briggs.

That's basically how the trade panned out. Broncos threw away the pick that became Knox. With Knox looking like the #1 right now, I'd say we did better. Orton may get bumped by Brady and be #2, and after this year he's probably bumped by Tebow, because Happy Meal needs The Monk to start within a year, or look like a fool with his pants on the ground.

  • In reply to gpldan:

No criticism intended here GP, but, if one chases Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Tony Scheffler out of town in the space of one season, I think one's pants are ALREADY down around one's ankles.

All I know is, with Orlando Pace retired, we have already seriously upgraded both tackle positions. I know I am the only one that thinks Omiyale is going to be fine, but look at it this way, VERY rarely is he going to be looking at a pass rusher in the same category as Ghost Peppers. I can't imagine that if he continues to false start his way into the season that Tice won't make a change and get Shaffer in, and make Omiyale the swing lineman behind Garza and Louis.
Peppers is the toughest DE our lineman will face all year.

(and the crazy thing is the announcers said he was a QB at Kent State...w/ that speed). as for the Pats? they're pretty damn impressive; either NO was flat or the Pats D has improved greatly (y'all can be the judge on that). when we play them at Soldier Field, that game is gonna be a good one.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Edelman is on my DBB FF team. I thought he might be like that.

If offensive line coach Mike Tice gave Kevin Shaffer the second highest grade behind Olin Kreutz for his performance last season, why are the Bears starting Frank Omiyale ahead of Shaffer?

a Saints fan makes a bet w/ me a/b the Bears (a team he hasn't covered extensively, but a team we all know top to bottom). the bet is for $20 and the conditions are as follows:

Bears win 8 or more games - i get $20
Bears win 7 games even - push
Bears win 6 or fewer games - he gets $20

gotta love a sucker bet. ^_^

  • In reply to FQD1911:

I got 4-1 odds at work that the Bears finish 11-5 or better.
I could've gotten 3-1 for 10-6 or better, but go big or go home.

    DAMN!

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    Of interest...

    A) As if a revamped line and brand new system weren't enough, the Bears test their new offense against a 3-4 defense.

    B) The NFL has moved the umpire from the middle of the defense to
to the ofensive side of the ball with the referess. An innocuous rule change? Hardly, according to local Tucson radio host, Glenn Parker.

The former University of Arizona, Bills, Giants and Chiefs offensive tackle makes the following interesting points:

    1) Receivers will no longer be able to use the umpire to "pick-off" defenders.

    2) Defensive lineman will be holding like crazy without the umpire breathing down their backs to see it and that spells trouble for zone blocking schemes.

    3) Defenses are likely to get away with more "fake" offensive signal calls because the umpire will now be too far away to discern them.

I hadn't even heard about the positioning change, let alone the possible implications. Thanks, Glenn.

    C) Lastly, I HATE the NFL NETWORK's decision but the I suspect they want the Bears and their shiny new free agents and offense in prime time.

Who will be the suprise player on the Defense? Thanks Michael, always good to hear from a professional.

    Michael (2:16 PM)

I don't know what it is, but for some reason, I'm really high on Nick Roach and Pisa Tinoisamoa. In fact, I'm gonna hate to see one of those guys lose the battle for the starting job at strongside linebacker, because both are ballers. Roach is fluid and powerful, while Tinoisamoa - for a small guy - plays with that "dog" in him that I like to talk about. I think the winner of the starting job there could be the surprise player on defense.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Surprise player on D? Psalms 91. He's back. Butter is back.

  • In reply to gpldan:

blitz all you want Chico, we will just dump it off to Forte or the Molester for a quick 15 yard gain.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Mulligan can't know what the O-line will look like never mind how they'll play. If the lineup stays the way it is now, it's still going to be a very different look. I don't see how Omelette stays at RT, but we'll see after pre-season when they've all been battle-tested. Kreutz is the one I'll be watching closest. Is he fit to play ? Are we going to carry him ? Garza is number two on the watch list? It's all very well having Tice throw in his two cents, but he doesn't pick the team. The Bears tend to pick their roster according to the salary chart.

    * As it stands we're going to start Garza in a position he isn't used to playing.

    * We're going to start Olin when he's just getting over achilles surgery - the *achilles* mind you - the itty bitty little thing that holds up your massive weight.

    * And for reasons best explained by management, Omelette is top of the depth chart at a position he's never played after stinking whenever he's managed to reach the field.

Shaeffer's no spring chicken either, but he's proven at the position. Do we have to wait until half way through the season before we finally let the replacements loose ? How long will we have to watch Cutler scrambling for his life and getting pounded, while LDL stands on the sideline with his head stuck in the sand and Angelo's hand stuck up his ass ? Thank God Forte is feeling better, he'll need to be Payton-esque to make up for any frak-ups by Omelette or lack of blocking when Garza and Kreutz can't keep up with faster defensive linemen on counters/traps and sweeps.

These guys are keeping Asiata, Shaeffer, Beekman, Dirk Diggler, Webb etc. from showing us what they can do. I'm worried Tice's input won't count for much when it comes time to picking the team. We watched Omelette and Pace stink it up for a *long* time last year before anything was changed.

I think the players are there, just afraid they won't be on the same line together ....

  • In reply to gpldan:

GP..nice pick up! but I agree with MB...I wanted two guards and a real FS we will see how this season pans out.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Actually the column is poorly researched.. he states that Omiyale has never played RT, he played RT and LT for the Panthers and was essentially hired last year to play RT but ended up getting plugged at guard because the cupboard was bare. And LG is not a new position for Garza either as he states, Garza played RG for 5 entire seasons. It has to do with getting the people who have the right traits to play the specific positions they are suited for.
