Welcome Back, Brian

I've thought something had gone fishing from Brian Urlacher's game since his early, dominant days at middle linebacker.  The days when his being called overrated were just the jealous exclamations of a league that hadn't seen a combination of his athletic ability and skin color.  Since those days his game has taken a dip, mostly due to injury, and he's allowed himself to be the punching bag of media, fans and everybody who thinks that it's Butkus or bust at the position in Chicago.

Last night, Brian Urlacher got angry.  And he responded to the critical comments Gale Sayers made weeks ago.

"Let me ask you a question: 'How many championships did Gale Sayers win?''' Urlacher told the Tribune. "How many playoff games did he win when he played? None. None. None.
"Does it bother me? There are enough people throwing daggers at us right now, why does one of our ex-players have to jump in? There are enough experts talking (crap) about us, so why does a Bear, an all-time great, have to jump in? I just don't like that.''
"... Does (Sayers) know how to win football games? Does he? No. How are you going to criticize someone else when you haven't done it yourself? He's one of our own, so that's why it's so frustrating.''

There are some who'll argue these are just words.  And maybe that's true.  But they are words from an unlikely source.  Urlacher has never been the vocal leader of this organization, leaving those duties to Mike Brown, Thomas Jones and Olin Kreutz through the years.  Maybe his time has come.

Because Brian knows his legacy can be cemented in Chicago as one of the all-time greats by achieving one goal and one goal only: a title.  I wonder if this wasn't a warning shot.

  • First? Sweet fucking action.

    Go 'Lach!

  • Hopefully this lights a spark under Urlacher's A money sign money sign for this season.

  • From Rotoworld.com:

    Bears signed OG Vince Vance.

Not to be confused with the country music group Vince Vance & the Valiants whose 1989 "All I Want for Christmas Is You" has been unfairly overshadowed by an inferior version from Mariah Carey. This Vince Vance is a 6'8" project out of Georgia.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    His Bio:

  • In reply to Joseph:

This dude is 6'8" and is a offensvie tackle. Can we get someone who is good at guard and not to tall to where Cutler can't throw to our recievers or see.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

He played on some pretty good Georgia teams. Still a project tho.

  • In reply to Joseph:

'Nother cheap, off-the-radar, different-position-playin', not-really-what-we-need-to-fix-the-gap, FrankO-like, project outta Lovie and JA...

    ...shocking... and oh so brilliant!

  • In reply to Joseph:

This has nothing to do with FB (again), but here's something from outterspace for you musicians on the board... how's this fucking thing: http://eigenlabs.com/alpha/

Oh, and Murph, wasn't calling you out for Salma (great name... and boobies btw) man. My wife wants a chihuawaaa, but we already have the two bull terrorists. I told her, when we lose the two monsters she can get whatever she wants, I just damn well ain't gonna walk the thing in public.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB, never thought you were callin me out, as #16 would write,"LOL". Man I thought the same way, didnt want a little dog, wasnt gonna walk it. Called her Salma because I wasnt callin any dog Foxy. Then got another one "Chico",anyone messes with the chihuahua remarks,I just tell them to go ahead and try to pet him. Cures the attitude in a minute. As far as walking him MB, chick magnet! My dog and my grandson, I'll never be alone as long as I have one or the other. Go ahead and let her get one, guarantee youll be glad ya did.

I wish we had a football coach like this.

If the Marines can do this then maybe our football team can learn to execute their assignments.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Trac, I've got to ask - what is the point of that? Stripping down and reassembling your weapon as fast as you can I can understand, it might save your life in combat. But baton twirling and caressing your rifle? What's the deal?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Some tid bits from this weekends OTA's from chicagobears.com:

On the mend: Manumaleuna, center Olin Kreutz, linebacker Nick Roach and punter Brad Maynard will not participate in the minicamp practices while they recover from injuries. Wide receiver Earl Bennett will be limited. Manumaleuna and Bennett both underwent minor knee surgery.

Defensive tackle Tommie Harris and linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa will practice once a day.

WTF is up with Tommie Harris? Why does that fat turd get special treatment week in week out?? Pisa is coming off a knee injury but what is Tommies excuse the last THREE years?

  • In reply to Joseph:

Butter Harris: When it's hot out, he's soft.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    Rank 'em bitches:

    http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/rank?versionId=2&listId=356

  • In reply to gpldan:

1,2,5 & 6 matched up. Had Sayers at 9 though.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    +1
And Pisa is *always* coming off a knee injury. That's why it blows my mind that we held onto him/Roach/HH and got rid of Jamar. The Panthers were about to release Harris anyway and we go and give up our best linebacker other than Lac/Briggs.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Urlacher shouldve shut his pie whole until after this season. If he steps up, then he could've responded. Until Urlacher does something again, he shouldve taken this with a grain of salt and used it as momentum into the season like underdogs do to get ready for big games.

  • In reply to RealityCheck:

He's entitled to his opinion regardless, he was called out and he does have an NFC Championship to his name - did it with a sucky QB and no HOF RB too.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Sayers was also entitled to his opinion. They both were, and both had valid points to make. This is what happens in the off-season. This is a non-story. Two people expressed opinions, he said she said. It's BS. I hope Brian comes back and has an awesome year - when he plays well the Bears do well. Period.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

  • In reply to Joseph:

He's talked shit before. He shouldn't worry about an old man that gets paid for his critique of the team. He needs to worry about that opposing lineman that gets his hands on him and #54 can't shed. Needs to worry about the big back that breaks his tackles. He bitches about Cutler, calls him a pussy, and then sits out the year and goofs off, and clowns on the sidelines. Smiling like an asshole when his team is getting beat. Show us on the field!! Be one of the best in the league. Right now your not even the best linebacker on the Bears. Shut up! Put a "wrapper on IT", and play football!!

  • In reply to iamndmurff:

    +1 Murph!

  • In reply to Joseph:

    Sweet find Joe!

  • In reply to Joseph:

Let's hope he snaps back into being a Pro Bowler the same way he snaps back at a Bears Hall of Famer.

    He's got a point though...

I could care less about the banter. I for one, hope to see a healthy and productive Lach who does more talkin' on the field than off this year. He stays healthy, he's a pro-bowler again.

    I believe. Go Bears.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    This was cool:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/12573/on-the-radar-cutler-martz-dynamic

    This quote was important...

"I had some issues with a timing offense and not being able to see things [before the throw]," Cutler said. "He had only worked that way. There was a little bit of give and take, and we're definitely on the same page with everything. It's been really interesting working with him and a lot of fun."

To me it really points to Cutler trusting that the receivers are going to be where they are supposed to be when he makes the so-called "unseen" throw. When he builds a confidence level that they are going to be there, I think it will make the world of difference.

My issue is and always has been that our receivers seem to have a problem getting any separation, even though you have timed routes, if they don't have separation at the point of the throw, how will that work out. Without stating it in this post with my usual skeptic view. I will merely state it as a concern and that my hope level is high that it will work out.

Is it possible that the old successful Rams "greatest show on turf" receiving corps was a little overrated because Kurt Warner was really the only guy to be super successful in the Martz' offense. If they were overrated, then our receivers could do just fine in the offense.

Lastly, now that it is apparent that we are not going to change the field to turf because of the "safety" issue, instead we will continue to have the worst field in the league that gets complained about all season long by all. Then it seems that winning may not be the number one priority. I mean really what are the true stats of turf injuries, specifically the new kind of softer turf that is being made today? Is it that much of a safety risk to the players?

    Later.

Bear down for a couple more months before we start seeing some real NFL info coming out and maybe we can find out if the offense is taking hold with our receivers and Qb.

  • In reply to shonbear:

I listened to that interview and it worried me. Martz' methods require smart receivers. Not fast guys, not big guys, but smart. That's what we DON'T have. Shabba excepted, as always, I have no doubts about that dude, he's a baller.

  • In reply to Joseph:

I am liking the new Urlacher. He seems to be tired of taking shit and is dishing it back.. I am telling you this defense is going to play with a chip on it's shoulder. Like someone said earlier..I hope it isn't just talk.

  • Hahahahahaha... no thanks doc. At least not when I go to Vegas. I like to do my homework and make the statistically advantageous, informed decision.

Oh, and God Farve is a dildo: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl/05/20/favre.ap/index.html?eref=sihp

  • And from the 'I'm still not (really) talking football file: http://theunlikelyfan.blogspot.com/2010/05/disclaimer-im-new-to-this-site-and-im.html

Pretty brilliant stuff actually - check who he compares portugal to. Worth the read... and I would recommend watching the world cup this year during our total FB down-time, if for nothing else but to get a look at South Africa during the promo periods.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Dude - he doesn't even make any mention of France being in the world cup instead of the Republic of Ireland only because of blatant cheating. So really, France = New England Patriots and Bill Belichek. There.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

  • In reply to BrendaMuir:

Huh, must be FNG day on the 'ol blog.

I have a question for you wnl... help me understand something that I never really understood when I read other blogs (only once in a while, I promise guys). And this isn't about you specifically, because I know it's done a lot... and this is an honest question:

Are you really a hot chick with realy nice boobies, or are you a dude who picked that avatar (and here comes my question)... Why?

I get that it's a nice looking avatar, but why have people associate you (a dude, I'm assuming) with a chick? It's not bad or anything and I'm really not talking smack, I'm honestly just curious. I

  • In reply to MB30SD:

My first question to you MB is, what is a hot chick? 2nd question, do hot chicks have more mileage on them? Third question, can hot chicks really be true Bears fans?

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Lastly, would it be sexy to post of picture of me showing my carpenter crack while repairing a busted line under my kitchen sink?

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Builders' bottom eh? Might be fun for a day, go for it.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    +1 on and 2 & 3.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

MB - you're a blog slut, really? I lost my virginity over on the trib. That just made me want more. Ran with the trash on Fannation for a while. Got pregnant and dumped on WCG (go and read the Community Guidlines over there - talk about anally retentive. Seriously, it's worth a read - it begins 'There are very few "rules" on Windy City Gridiron'....)

But thanks for sharing MB, acceptance is the first step in blog slut recovery.

  • In reply to BrendaMuir:

Welcome new person, uh, wammalanadingdong? And for the love of Payton I hope you are a lady, this board needs one. And I'm going to assume you are because that's an acronym if ever I saw one. Solve it boys !
Women Nag Like Most Men Do Jigsaws?

    I think not. Help.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Urlacher and Sayers are both wrong and they are both right. Kinda reminds me of family. Gotta love them both.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Well said, Trac. Nobody know how to rip on you like your own family.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Look , Sayers was good when he could play, but he was hurt half of his career and getting hurt easy is a limitation for an athelete; hell Westbrook would probably be on pace to catch Emmitt if he wasn't hurt every third game. But the major point is this, Brian Urlacher is currently on the payroll of the Chicago Bears, not only that but is arguably the current face of the franchise. He is entitled to have an opinion on the goings on with his team and is in a position to see what goes on in the front office and in the locker room. Gale Sayers hasn't played football in 40 years! Much less have any real inside information or knowledge what goes on with the Bears. He is more known as a great running back and return guy than a great Chicago Bear, hell look the 2 up on wikipedia, Sayers in a suit and signing autographs by his name w/o even an orange C on it; Urlacher in full on Bear gear.

Lach, say whatever you want buddy, long as you show up on Sunday this season and don't get hurt, sweet baby Jeebus don't let Lach get hurt.

Sayers... go work on your golf game... have a Coke... and a smile.. and shut the fuck up.

  • he was one of the guys that impressed Lovie during mini-camp. That's not sayin' much.

  • In reply to Joseph:

Especially when Rex was 'his' quarterback.

  • New here...but I've been watching from the sidelines for a while...

I think it's simply "deeds not words". I like Url. But he needs to let his play do the talking. Right now, like Butkus and Sayers, Url has no championships.

I'd just like to see that fire come out in games this season...

  • In reply to MadLithuanian:

Welcome onboard ML. I do believe Lac has an NFC Championship that he got without much help from our offense. He's done none nothing but win for us and no doubt he'll be at the center of any success we have this year. Hopefully.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Thanks! Don't get me wrong, Url seems to be a key to wins & losses for us. But, I'm not content with just winning an NFC title. I want it all! I don't think it'll be this year, but I'm hoping within the next 3. We need significantly better play from our DL, OL, WR and secondary. I think the rest should be OK.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

    MB Quote of the Day:

"Are you really a hot chick with realy nice boobies, or are you a dude who picked that avatar (and here comes my question)... Why?"

    Nice...

I bet "I don't pull out, ever" Urlacher has a big bounce back year and when all is said and done is a defensive player of the year candidate. Maybe I'm drunk on the ole cool aid...

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Fkn +1 Coach ! Defense won't look as bad as last year with a real Mike in place. The Lac is back. Bring the pain.

    "I don't pull out, ever"

I like it Coach. I like it.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I guess Urlacher needs to read the tea leaves.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/05/21/mike-ditka-dan-hampton-pile-on-brian-urlacher/

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

[Ditka added that Urlacher should respect Sayers' on-field accomplishments.

"If he doesn't get hurt when he does, I'm telling you, nobody would ever break his records," Ditka said of Sayers. "I was there. He made me look good on blocks. I didn't know where I was half the time. The guy was unbelievable. I saw him. Brian never saw this, but that's OK."]

    Boom. Ouch.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Now that Vince Vance is signed things should settle down a bit. Great pic Joeseph. Great call out on dude hiding behind girl pic MB. I'm with Murph, GPL and others that say that Lach should shut the f up until he proves his pimp hand is strong enough to still back hand red headed step-children. GPL-where did you see 54 was putting up 400 on the bench?

I got kicked off Chicagonow for the second time for commenting on the subject of complimenting women. This was my post. Trying to keep the wheels spinning and stay productive during the long off-season.

Giving too many compliments can subtly but powerfully shift the power dynamics of a relationship. Too many compliments can make the man appear weak and desperate. The woman thinks she is more buetiful and powerful than she actually is, and eventually the dude is so p-whipped he has to get her permission to go to home depot for a home improvement project. I know couples like this and it really is attrocious to see. Sack up men! Overly-praising your woman is analagous to castration and will not get you extra ass or anything else for that matter. Be honest!

The only other time I compliment a woman is if I want to encourage her to do something. For example, my favorite part of a woman's body is her ass. I love the butt; juicy but not gushing. So, if I think there is some room to grow or develop in that area, I'll tell her how much I love that area of the female body. I'll encourage her to indulge in a reasonably portioned second serving or tell her I'd like her to share dessert with me. I'll tell her how squats have really helped me strengthen my lower body. When the butt grows to an ideal size, I'll tell her how perfect her behind is and then stop encouraging the second servings. Make indirect suggestions rather than too many compliments.

I think its BS I've got booted twice for exercsing my 1st Amend rights. Someone on here is big brothering my ass. I'm not gonna get into a internet war or anything, but I don't get it.

  • In reply to Crowned:

You got to excersize your 1st amendment right. Just didn't get the response you expected Crowned.

  • In reply to Crowned:

That blows, Crown, seriously. There is only the illusion of free speech. Complimenting women, Jebus, where's the racism/hatred/mean-ness there? It's just love! Banned for love. All you need is love, the Beatles said so. That blows.

Dude, do you think it was a reader complaining that doesn't even post? Wouldn't that be a mind-blower.

  • The old fellas are right, the bears stink. Urlacher knows it, the rest of the team knows it, the coaches & management know it, even majority of the moronic bear fan base knows it.

Get ready for a 4th place NFC North finish for the bears while getting pimp slapped again twice by the Packers this upcoming season. Get used to it!

  • In reply to MadMaxRockatansky:

Packer boards must be slow today.

  • In reply to Joseph:

What do you mean "..today", Joseph?

  • In reply to MadMaxRockatansky:

Roca-pad-sky, just no that the Packers will always choke when it comes down to it. Always. It doesn't matter what Aaron does on the field, what his numbers are, how many TD's he throws to Driver, how gay his Neck-beard-esque facial hair is...
The Pack will never win it without Favre. Face it Rocky, your guys will always fuck it up.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

like i fucked up the spelling of no because my wife is busy yelling at me for blogging instead of folding laundry and i lost concentration.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Time to get all Mike Tomczak on her ass Waffle - just lunge at her suddenly.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

that was really funny. i won't channel #16 with tons of LOL's and OMG's but the thought of Tomczak with his goofy ass face and hair lunging at anyone in anger is very entertaining.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

According to Kevin Payne's latest interview over on the Ram's website, he was the staring punter his senior year in college. Go figure. I won't post the link, this is Kevin Payne we're talking about ... on the Rams' site. Waste of a mouse click. God, off-season. I was on the Rams' website. Jebus. And no, I didn't see anything about Atogwe (the reason I was there in the first place). Didn't look too hard, otherwise I would technically have been 'surfing' the Rams' website.

...3 men enter, 1 man leaves. Who's in?

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Fuuuuuck, half the team is already injured going into the first OTA. How the fuck does that happen? Too much Playstation? Jebus christo and se burro auckess.

Joe, nice Tux by the way my man.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

This team is getting long in the tooth MB.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I had Urlacher @ #10 like everyone else.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

Child Support weighed in at 260, his normal weight, and is benching 400 right now against the wrist.

After tearing my achilles at the calf, I had an ancillary injury last week. I ripped the plantaris tendon open. A 20 cm gash down the length of it, a hematoma so large it turned my leg purple. The leg can fucking unravel on you once one part structurally fails, so I understand Butter is going to have a hard time. But this year he needs a push off it, he needs to get in the backfield, I don't see big push coming from Harrison.

No word on how Pisa rehab is doing.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Wow! I have an idea! Let's beat up Urlacher some more! Especially given our expertise, having direct experience of the rigors of NFL life from right here in our armchairs.

  • In reply to MadMaxRockatansky:

    Hi Max.

  • In reply to MadMaxRockatansky:

    Hi Max.

  • In reply to MadMaxRockatansky:

Brian Urlacher might be a great linebacker, but he is a moron and a hypocritical POS.

I wouldn't expect this from anyone OTHER than Urlacher, hardly an unlikely source. Sure Brian won't respond to the media after games other than maybe an occasional grunt, but wasn't HE the one bashing the Bears in the MIDDLE of last season when HIS ASS was on a couch? I love how he complains about a HOF Bear telling it like it is, when last year he flapped his gums to a bitch reporter about how the Bears D can't tackle and Forte can't make people miss. What a joke this guy is sometimes. I love the way he plays football, but the guy is a douche.

Sometimes (dumbass) athletes need to know when to cut the connection between what goes on in their heads and what comes out of their mouths, especially in front of the media.

  • In reply to MadMaxRockatansky:

Had Payton #1, Butkus #2, Ditka #3. Gotta give Iron Mike the nod for bringing us a Superbowl in my lifetime.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I couldn't figure that out, where was Papa Bear (taking off my cap and blessing myself here)? Da Coach promised us a superbowl and got us a superbowl (thanks Coach!). But Papa Bear (cap/sign of the cross) won twelve million NFL titles! No love?

Anyone NOT have Payton as their #1? Own up. I had Butkus at #2 in case I ever ran into him. Crap, I'd better vote again ...
