If I Were Living in Chicago...

There's no way I wouldn't be attending this.  If any of you decide to go, please send me reports.

'Da Bears Movie Dat Wasn't,' Wendt, Mantegna and Ditka added to da' Just For Laughs

by Chris Jones

Coming 'atcha, once again from the heart of Chicago, the Super Fans. It's been a bit of a dry spell, (da' Bears!) and a certain team from a certain city (da' Bears!) has failed to run roughshod over the competition, but listen up. The Super Fans are back for a live performance as part of this summer's Just For Laughs festival.

"Da Bears Movie Dat Wasn't" will be a live reading of a never-produced screenplay, to star George Wendt, Joe Mantegna, Robert Smigel, Bob Odenkirk, Richard Roeper (as a narrator) and Mike Ditka (as Himself).

DitkaThe story: Da' Bears have been sold, and the beloved Soldier Field is to be converted into all luxury boxes for the rich. And here's the thing: This really was a screenplay, written back in the mid-1990s by Smigel and Odenkirk for Paramount based on characters from the "Saturday Night Live" sketch, said Smigel after the announcement Tuesday. It never got made. Tickets for the one-night-only reading June 19 at the Park West go on sale 10 a.m. Saturday at www.ticketmaster.com.

"It's an expansion of the world of the Super Fans," Smigel said. "We get to meet their families, their kids, their wives, go to church with them."

Smigel said he got the original inspiration for the Super Fans characters from coming to Chicago as a New Yorker in the '80s. He took himself to a Cubs game and noticed all the things that were better about seeing a game at Wrigley versus in New York, he said. "For one thing, I looked out at the bleachers and saw all the people in the quote-unquote 'crappy' seats having the best time."

From there, it was just spending time in sports bars soaking up the atmosphere. "I saw a lot of guys in loud T-shirts wearing the aviator shades, sporting the walrus mustache modeled after Ditka -- which I believe came to be an emblem of virility at the time."

The show will also include Super Fan sketches and a Q&A session with Ditka; it's billed as a benefit for the organizations Have Dreams: Helping Autistic Voices Emerge and the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.

  • Shakin my head. Long off season gents I guess we need to be creative for a couple of months.

  • There's nothing out there right now. Not until mid-June, at least.

  • In reply to JeffHughes:

Blogfather..wish I was also in Chi-Town for this..it seems that the off season is going on forever...wake me up when we are there! season that is.. "Are we there yet"?

    Some news from Siefert:

I had to check my calendar Wednesday after the Chicago Bears announced they had signed the third of their five draft choices. At this rate, they'll have everyone signed before minicamp -- let alone training camp.

Defensive end Corey Wootton was the latest to sign. That leaves third-round safety Major Wright and sixth-round quarterback Dan LeFevour as the Bears' remaining targets. The timing of rookie deals is largely irrelevant unless negotiations continue into training camp, but Bears contract negotiator Cliff Stein has long been known for setting the market rather than waiting for it to develop.

The Bears also announced two other expected moves. Safety Danieal Manning signed his restricted free-agent tender, clearing up any ambiguity about his status for this week's veteran minicamp. The Bears also released quarterback Brett Basanez, whose role as the No. 3 quarterback this season is almost certain to go to LeFevour."

Whoa, see? There's news, Bassy baby is history. So too I guess is any thought of hiring Bulger. So if Jay and Caleb go down int he first half against the Lions, Pepe Le Peu is the quarterback for the Chicago Bears. At least we're number one in the NFL for something - signing our sub-par draftees before anyone else. Excellent. The stuff champions are made of. Remember all the hoopla last year when we signed a bunch of crap in 2.4 seconds?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

    Brian's pissed.

"Let me ask you a question: 'How many championships did Gale Sayers win?''' Urlacher told the Tribune. "How many playoff games did he win when he played? None. None. None.

    and ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Child Support should shut his hole. Sayers has the balls to criticize the McCaskey family, and call the players out to play. Brian doesn't like his boat rocked, he's the king of the hill.

Put up or shut up Child Support. Nobody puts you in the same breath with Ray Lewis anymore, and your sidelines antics last season were pathetic. Otherwise, hand your C over to Briggs and go play for the Cardinals. We'll happily swap you for Larry Fitz.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Brian is an idiot but Sayers has no business talking shit about anyone. Sayers needs to shut the fuck up too.

  • In reply to gpldan:

we made some big moves this past season but people still complain because we only picked up 2 huge free agent pickups, 2 solid pickups and drafted a free safety. what did people think was going to happen? The Bears were active and we are going to surprise people this year. Thanks for keeping it interesting boys but the last couple of threads have been brutal because there is nothing to talk about. see you in Aug. When you get frustrated just remember that Julius Peppers in on our team. As Jeff said in a past post: The Bears put 2010 on notice. see all you crazy bear lovers in Aug.
By the way, is Ghost dead? Did #16 kill him? Leave a comment...

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Were they the same person? Ghost's alter ego? Ghost probably just bored with all of this. He's a serious, ass- kickin writer, and he is waiting for something of substance to write about. Have we heard the last of #16?

  • In reply to iamndmurff:

    Hey Murph.

What's his name... killer? Mangle? Lucifer?

Oh, and yes please. (I know, that was petty... but man it was rough having to skip big tracts of space when reading this blog).

  • In reply to MB30SD:

She goes by the name of Salma as in Salma Hayek. Got another one that is a killer, at least a good biter. If they are good enough for "Mongo" and Mickey Rourke good nuff for me.

  • In reply to iamndmurff:

Ah Salma, mmmm .... shall I compare thee to a summer rose ...

  • In reply to iamndmurff:

Ok, this ain't FB, but I thought you guys would enjoy this: http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/photos/0,,20221096_20499619,00.html

"Eating on the go has never been easier than with the 14 M.P.H. cooler. The three-wheeled go-cart can travel up to its eponymous speed and travel 15 miles on a single charge. Its chain drive, disc brake, and variable-throttle control give it the maneuverability of a golf cart, but instead of putters and drivers, it holds up to 24 12-ounce cans and 8 pounds of ice. About $500 Hammacher Schlemmer"

One question... think you can get a Dooey (DUI) while driving this thing in the parkinglot at Soldier?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I guess technically you would be operating a motor vehicle, and then anyone sitting on it drinking is violating the open container law too right?

  • In reply to gpldan:

Ten out of ten for your opening line, GPL. I don't know though, I'd have to say Fitzy would struggle playing Mike in the Cover 2, that's just my gut feeling ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Boldin, on the other hand...I get the feeling he'd -enjoy- hitting guys coming across the middle.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Good point Waffle. The Peppers signing got very ho-hum very quickly as our attention drifted to other areas of concern. He's definitely something to look forward to, and if they keep Omelette far away from the line we might actually get some drives going this year. For those that do, say a prayer that our boys can stay healthy this year and have us full o' beans on Monday mornings. Go Bears.

And dear baby Jebus, please take extra special care of baby Jay.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Keep your head down over there lad.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

I eat bullets MB. Getting shot just makes me angry, and they wouldn't like me when I'm angry Mr.McB.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Very nice... and, easy there Hulkster.

Leave a comment...Doc. Here's another for you sir.

Manute Bol v. The Fridge: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2ZtX3S/sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/images/05/19/bol-fridge.jpg/r:t

No clue who the ugly chick is standing there looking dumb.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Fucking website. Piece of shit. Grumble grumble....

  • IIRC, the Fridge ran out of gas -real- quick and had to sit down before he keeled over. Sad to hear that Manute Bol isn't doing so well either. Two classy guys in sports full of thuggish poseurs, and both of them have had a really tough time as of late.

  • Manute sure looks to have a reach advantage. Of course, he'd need a jab to go with it!

  • What thread is that Doc, you mean this advert? I'm going back to Cushing. We were onto something there.

  • Evidently, he came down with a skin disorder that led to acute kidney failure while on a trip to Sudan to work on his hospital...I mean, he's done nothing but charitable works since he left the NBA - even his winnings from beating the Fridge in that match went to charity.

  • Omaha is getting a UFL team this fall. The upshot of this is that Duante "Nutraslim" Culpepper will be playing QB for the Sacramento team. Sooooo, in a long and winding road-type of way, I will be watching a Viking get his ass kicked in person this fall. My schedule is not going to coincide with the Bears until after the first week of November, so it'll be a stretch if I get to see them in person this year.
J-Cut, we'll always have preseason in Denver.

  • I'm just jealous that they can go and see the Bears full stop. That play would be a good thing to put on in bars that could accommodate it. I also know that if I lived in Chicago I'd be a fat bastard. I've also had an ambition to have one of those Polish dogs from a certain vendor after Bill Hicks mentioned why he loved playing Chicago back in the day.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Irish Irish Irish....NOT a Polish Dog, its a Polish SAUSAGE! Don't have one, have two.
