Quiet Bears Draft a Good Thing

The Chicago Bears don't have a role in tonight's overhyped-to-the-point-of-insanity first round of the NFL Draft.  They don't have a role in tomorrow night's barely mentioned second round either.  And from the sound of Jerry Angelo, they don't plan to change that:

''We're out of that business,'' Angelo said. ''I don't want to get cute and keep borrowing from the future with picks because . . . it's very difficult to guarantee the present."

While I have no earthly idea what the hell "guarantee the present" means (and frankly I don't think Jerry does either), I do believe this approach is the only way for the Bears to maintain any semblance of organizational stability.

If the McCaskey family - whether it be Virginia, Michael, Paul or Ringo - allow Jerry to borrow anything from a season beyond 2010, it would be the football equivalent of a bank loan to a man with less than a 50% chance of recovering from cancer.  They've opened the checkbook and allowed him to spend like a sailor on leave but that should be as far as it goes.  If the Bears do not make the postseason (and for my money also win a postseason game), Lovie and Jerry must be shown the door and the next regime must have a full cupboard of draft picks.

And let me also add that I don't believe Angelo should have the ability to unload young talent, specifically Greg Olsen.  If Olsen doesn't fit Mike Martz' offensive scheme, so what?  Mike Martz' offensive scheme might be back working for the NFL Network this time next season.  Olsen has had an up-and-down early career here in Chicago but he's also developing a relationship with an elite passer who clearly likes throwing to him.

The quarterback's the thing.  Not the offensive coordinator.  The quarterback is going to be here for years, earning tons of money and opening Prime Cutler steakhouses.  If the Martz offense is wildly successful without real impact from Olsen, we'll all keep quiet as he's shuffled out of town.  If not, we'll allow Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden or Mike Heimerdinger or Russ Grimm to make the call.

  • Should be very telling about how Angelo's going to go out

  • Agree with most of your post Jeff, and enjoyed the analogy.

Glad they finally put the 'hell no you won't' handcuffs on JA, and trust me it wasn't his own sage strategic decision, to be kept as far away from Cowher's 2011 cupboard of new talent as possible.

Also agree that without a 1st round win (and nothing short of that), there needs to be a total and complete house cleaning at Halas. If Martz goes, I would like to put my early request into Mr. Cowher to hire Jim Harbaugh as our QB/OC. Thank you.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

If they did veto any actions pertaining to next year's picks and Angelo's access to them then either they've pretty much decided to eject the lot of them, or shot themselves in the foot. In order to win *now* we would need access to those picks - we could have had Marshall or Gaither. Did anyone pick up Justin Smiley of the Dolphins yet? Is that dude just sitting there and we're not picking up the phone? Sign Osi.

  • That's why I've been an advocate for keeping Olsen. Even though he doesn't perfectly fit into a Martz style offense, Martz and his system might not be here after this year. He's a big target, Cutler seems to know where he will end up on the field, and he has pretty steady hands. His blocking is obviously sub-par for the position, but I don't think he has to block if Martz uses him ore as a reciever which I think will happen. Manu can also be in there blocking; he better be for the money the Bears paid him. His numbers have continually gone up in most categories. Let's see if his blocking and YAC can improve this year. I feel like there is still a 10% chance he gets traded, but I think he's staying.

  • In reply to crowntheirass:

If Cutler has time to throw the ball, he could turn me into a 1,000 yard reciever! Get us some blocking Angelo! Flozel anyone??

  • In reply to crowntheirass:

    OK, I disagree.

Olsen's stock is about as high is it will ever get. It's not just a Lovie regime thing, it's a CHICAGO BEARS thing! We need giant TEs and a power running game. Ditka, of all people, even said so. To paraphrase, he said what is with all this 3-wide shit?! Bears football has been about the lines, O and D. Chicago is the place that dominates the line of scrimmage, and that's how it should be - can I get a fuckin amen?

Olsen is not a Bear, these big third tackles that can kinda catch the ball once in a while are Bears style TEs. Guys that will WIPE OUT opposing LBs, maybe even take 2 down.

I want TEs that pancake opposing DEs and OLBs. I want this team rebuilt Vanisi style: big nasty OLs that open giant running lanes for the backs. If the Bears G-C-G combo dominates, then EVERYTHING ELSE changes. If we could push the Vikings Williams brothers around, people would RESPECT the Bears again.

This greatest show on the worst sod in the NFL thing, is stupid. If they wanted this, they shoulda domed Soldier Field during the ashtray rebuild.

  • In reply to gpldan:

    Amen.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Now that's the shit I'm talkin' about. Blood on the field, not twittering tweeting twats in pink cleats.

    * Guaranteeing 'success' in the present would have required next year's #1. A fair price to pay for probably the best receiver in the NFL. You left out a word Jerry, but what the hey, you're a tool.

    * A bank loan to a terminal cancer patient is solid. They still get his house.

    * Olsen can't go anywhere - Angelo won't pull the cord on his Florida golden girl, whilst we're on the subject of flushing first round draft picks down the toilet.

    * His developing relationship with Cutler is double-edged. Opposing defenses know it, and will just put a rover on him. Cutler needs to stop that shit. If you're going to home in on someone, make sure it's someone who gets more than 2.7 yards downfield ... I don't know ... maybe SOMEONE LIKE BRANDON FUCKING MARSHALL !!!!!!! I'm letting it go. Soon. Deep breaths. One day soon ...Ommmmmmmmmmmmm.

    * Why bother splitting him wide? KD is taller and he can pancake.

    * We won't get anything for Dez. Don't want anything for Dez, except a spot on the team. If they eject KD I go to critical mass. Angulo?

  • In reply to crowntheirass:

Kellen Davis seems to fit the mold you're talking about GPL. He's shown that he's got some good hands too. Talk about a big ass target. Hopefully he finds the field this year. So does Manu. We got enough of those type of guys don't ya think?

Olsen is listed as a TE, but I think Olsen becomes more of a WR in Martz offense this year.

  • In reply to crowntheirass:

How about KD as the WR? Manu inside ... that way we get a 6'7 receiver that can block and still have a man mountain inside clearing the way. If I was 15 I'd have a boner right now and some wee would trickling out ...

  • For the right price, anybody is fair game...even Greggy Boy. Except Cutler and Hester. hehe

  • He would still be an upgrade to what we currently have...idk, if he came cheap on a 2 year deal I say scoop 'em

  • In reply to Joseph:

    +1

Ndomukong Suh is coming. We'll need guns.

  • I don't recall Angelo giving off any vibes that the Bears would make such a big splash in free agency this year and then, all of a sudden, WHAM, he lands Peppers, Taylor and the "Great Wall of Samoa" which, I believe, surprised most of US and definitely pissed off the mopes at the 4-LETTER who didn't see it coming.

  • That's why I think Olsen still might be gone for a 2nd rounder.

  • Jeff, please no more Olsen talk, so far he has had a minimum positive effect on this team since drafting him and we have at least 2 very good TE's that can do the job just as well or better. JA having his carte blanche trade privilege's revoked is a good thing. So far anything concerning moves up til now will not hurt a new coaching staff next year and I want to keep it that way. When this team eventually establishes a #1 WR any Olsen concerns go "POOF" and disappear into the air.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

    + fkn 1

Anything Olsen can do KD can do better. Dez ditto. Olsen is surplus to requirements in all areas.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

give up a 4th & 5th, get T. Mays, and cap it off w/ an O-Lineman. take what you can get in the 6th & 7th, move to FA (darren sharper or ken hamlin, and shawn andrews), then onward to Bourbonnais.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

get Sharper AND Mays ? I'd rather see a vet come in and we get the best mofo avaialble in the first round next year. Why settle for some guy when we can get the best next year? Although TM is no slouch ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

b/c he has the most potential out of any safety in this draft. one offseason where you work w/ his hands (and the fact that he'll have to catch Cutty's bullets in practice) = a BIG FUCKIN' dude that can lay murderous wood w/ some hands. see the picture now?

  • Jerry is talking out of his 2 hole. They are going G-Reg is as good as gone if we get offered a 2nd rounder, and the patriots would be stupid not to offer up the trade. If not, i'm taking up a collection to get Greggy a bowflex so he might be able to break 1 takle next year.

How far along? I could work backwards from the bye, but I'm lazy and not good at the maths. Doc, a little help?

  • In reply to MB30SD:

3 months gone - and one of em is a puncher already. Due in the bye week, so I won't miss a Bears game, technically - looking at Doc's point below, could interfere with the Bill's game or go the other way (twins tend to come early) and eat into the Redskins game. Partying is done with already, but sleep ... man I need my sleep. I was cool yesterday, not so cool today. This was not on the agenda. So be it.

And that's some mouthful Doc - hard to forget that one if he pops up on the radar ...

  • like a tombstone saloon tart Doc, like a saloon tart.

BTW, our boy Thomas from GT just went to McFuckstick in Denver. Damn it.

  • Josh McDaniels has just single handily destroyed the Denver Broncos.

Jahvid Best had two concussions at Cal. He's got serious speed to the corner, but no way does this guy north/south run for the Lions. He's lucky to get on a turf team.

  • Packers chose an OT. If he takes as long as Williams to make an impact(still waiting), yawn.

  • Ok, I had closed it down early for the night for a change, but I had to log back on.

Did you guys just see that McFuckstick do that?!?!? Did I really just see that? Damn, guess they just found their replacement for Scheffler. Man, that guys is either a genius or a complete moron. Holy crow. I honestly don

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Getting rid of Marshall/Cutler proved he was a 'tard. Now he's just underlining and rubber-stamping it, shading and coloring in. What a tool. I don't feel so bad having Lovie now ... you've got to feel for the Bronco fans out there.

  • SUPER pissed 23 teams passed up on Dez Bryant to let him go to the Cowgirls. Lovie's gonna get fired before the season even starts (we'll see 10+ of these 32 1st round picks this season)

  • In reply to FQD1911:

I'm gonna say it for the last time...pick-up; T.O, Flozell, and Sharper and then draft whomever.

  • In reply to Joseph:

    1. yes 2. Only if it doesn't mess with anything else happening. 3. Yes and draft guards

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Fuck me sideways these Lions keep making great moves!!

  • In reply to FQD1911:

the QB class this year blows but i am dumbfounded that Denver took Tebow unless they will turn him into a tightend. Who got the better of that trade you ask? McDaniels knows Orton is not the answer but Tebow? Then Minnesota just traded their pick to the Lions who picked Jahvid Best. very interesting.

  • In reply to hollywood1:

Even so, a TE in the first round who isn't even a TE ?! WTF? Either way, McDaniels is a bum.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    +1
    And Suh twice ...

  • Doc, you could pick these guys up for 7-10 Mil. For all three!! And they would all start immediately!

  • Suh is coming. Line him up behind No-Achilles-tendon-Kreutz.

  • tebow before claussen HA!

  • 43 picks till us and there are still at least three viable safeties on the board, still think they could move up even just a little (without selling the farm) to secure one that can be on the field this season. I'm sorry I still think Mike Brown is welcome back too.

  • seriously think the Bears should trade up for Taylor Mays. matter of fact, how come they haven't already done this?

  • In reply to FQD1911:

    Yes please FQ!

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Orton hasn't got a cannon, but he should be okay, Tebow isn't smart enough to walk in there and do anything. Kyle did it the hard way and Tebow must be a TE or something ... or else it's a big joke on Denver fans.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

I am now dedicated to the task of following Jimmy Claussen's career in the NFL. Fucking Denver. All those batshit bible thumpers in the Springs must be going apeshit with navy blue marker on their Jake Plummer jerseys.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Either that, or ripping off the name on their Marshall jerseys.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Oh, and somebody should tell Maxipad that Bryan Bulaga is a direct response to Pepper and Butter. Don't pretend it's not.

  • In reply to gpldan:

hope it works out for them. a rook going against a perennial pass rusher and (one time) perennial run-stopper? good luck w/ that.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Who said Bulaga was going to start from day one? Regardless of Peppers, the Packers were looking tackle early. Both of their starting tackles are are getting up their in age & have durability concerns.

  • In reply to gpldan:

The Vikes made a good trade. If they can pick up Claussen or McCoy in Round 2, that will be just about the best shot they'll get to replace Favre once he walks away after 2010 (or before, or later...) But pretty much everyone in the press thinks they'll go another way so hopefully we we'll get a break for our weak secondary twice a year.

The Tebow trade was a huge shocker, but I feel bad for Orton. No matter how hard the guy plays, and he's a decent QB, teams always want to replace him. Denver could have gone a lot of ways other than Tebow.

Also have to say I'm glad Suh is in Detroit over GB or Minnesota. If there's a team in the NFL that can screw things up around him, it'll be Detroit.

  • In reply to mottystone:

Orton will be sweet, he's almost the finished article. Tebow is not too smart by all accounts and won't be NFL ready for a long time, if ever. At least he'll be sober, won't be pulled over for DUI/weapons/shooting himself in the cock accidentally ...

  • In reply to mottystone:

King thinks Roethlisberger is going nowhere? What would you do if you were Rooney? The guy has to date probably raped (at least) two women and will be unavailable for half of the season. Why would you keep him? They let Santonio Chong go for a fifth rounder, of course they'll let Worthlessberger go - Rams should have snapped him up and drafted Suh ...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I would trade him to the raiders.

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

I think Mike McCaskey stepping down next year is a sign of good things to come... Like a complete house cleaning...

  • In reply to IrishBearsFan:

Have been thinking about the cheeseheads picking an OT last night. It came to me this morning. They know our defensive line will be hard to stop this year. I see this as a sign that the real dope on Peppers in our division is one of major concern to O-Lines. This is very encouraging boys.

Interesting point I saw made 'elsewhere'. There is a talent increase in the draft this year as more players are coming out early in anticipation of a possible lock-out next year. Therefore next year's picks will be worth less and Angelo should be shopping them ... any thoughts?

Are you trying to provoke me Irish?

Wow what a lame night. Can't wait for our turn tonight, finally. I bet we take a Safety in round three and a Guard in round 4.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

That would be the wrong thing to do and therefore what we will do. We'll draft a project like that CB Ansah-okwosi-hooba-jooba, then pick up a lesser guard, and after a couple of years get rid of the CB and realise we still haven't got a farkin safety. Sound about right? Singletary had it sweet, bolster the OL, blinker your thinking and solve your problem.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I've been half jokingly telling you guys that Tebow will do well in this league, and he will. McDaniel's picked him because he could. How bout that boys, we're standing on the curb with our hat out asking for donations while McDaniel's slowly peels his banana and eats it in front of everyone.

Bears should move up and get Taylor Mays, but I doubt they will. The fact that he dropped into the 2nd round is something the Bears should be jumping all over. The guy is a stud. I have watched every game he has played at SC. He got a bad rap last year, but his problems were he was basically the only returning starter on defensive side of the ball last year. USC had defensive problems, it wasnt all on Mays.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

  • In reply to mottystone:

Taylor Mays is gone by the 4th pick in the 2nd round. Bank on that.

If I was the Bears GM, I would quietly offer up Devin Hester to go get this kid.

  • In reply to gpldan:

Stop that crazy talk. Hesters not going anywere

  • In reply to Joseph:

I have a different perspective on Hester than most Bears fans. I think he's at the top of his trade value. I don't think his punt returning skills are the same anymore - the kid has lost confidence. He's not a true 1WR, although I can see him working at it, I also see Randy Mossisms with him taking plays off. He was a failure as a corner, what he was originally taken to do.

For two years yes, with Brandon A and that special team unit - he was electric. He ran over that fat mouthy punter of the Broncos who thought he had "guns" and rolled up his jersey. He LITERALLY ran over him for two TDs.

But I think now, he's just the same as Knox on PR, just the same as Manning on KR and is an okay wideout. Would I trade that for a true talent at safety?

    Yes. Yes I would.

  • In reply to gpldan:

+ 100 GP. It would also force the Bears to go out and find a real WR if we traded Hester. Of course this is all moot because Lovie "WILL NOT" trade Hester only to see him shatter "ALL" NFL KR records with another team.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I don't think so. Hester has had a separated shoulder and I think he may never get back to being the one juke and gone guy again.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

He's not a #1 WR because he's not a #1 WR! The Bears have no fucking clue on how to use this guy. His value was at KR not at WR going up against the best corners in the league on Sundays. If you want to use him in the passing game you put him in the slot where an LB has to cover him or a nickle back. I'm sorry, with the ball iin Hesters hands, there is NOBODY that is more exciting! I can't buy that he has trade value stuff because we don't have anybody at the WR position period that is better than him. If we had 2 or 3 guys better than him on the depth chart then you could maybe consider trading him. Until then Hester stays, Martz uses his talents properly and we somehow get a true #1 WR. And whats Hester worth out there anyways? a 3rd? No way we give him up for a 3rd anyhow. Teams don't know how to even evaluate the guy because we've moved him around the feld so much. He is more valuable to us than you think. Hester stays

  • In reply to Joseph:

Joe, you make some good points, and in the end, he's going nowhere because lovie is a complete fucktard...

...but I have to agree with both Gp and Trac on this one bubba. Taylor Mays would be the future (and you all know what a hardon I've had for getting him in for months now), and devin is the past. Again, it would never happen, but I'd also trade him in a second for mays... IF we couldn't get the deal done with greggie first.

  • In reply to MB30SD:

Sometimes the future is much brighter than reality. I'm not saying Mays won't be great, I have no idea (I don't watch college ball). However, it's not a lock that he will be great.

  • In reply to gpldan:

I think its safe to say that the Lions may have had the best personnel moves so far.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

We'll see if Suh is Steve Entman or Reggie White.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

I 100% agree Trac. Look at who they have picked.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Thats understandable but they also signed and traded for some good players during the offseason.

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

The purple headed yogurt slingers will be selecting one Taylor Mays tonight

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    Damn it coach! Damn it!

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

NE just traded down to Arizona. Heeeeelloooooooo.... Jeeeerrrryyyyy, are you fucking awake Jerry? Hello?

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    Wow, Panthers just took Clausen.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

    hello... is this thing on?

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

FUCK FUCK FUCK!!! San Fran just took Taylor Mays. Damn it man!

    Fuck you Angelo.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Singletary knows what he's doing. Mays will have a stellar carreer playing for mike.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Agree 100% Trac. Really glad we chose lovie instead of Samurai. Very happy.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

MB...I said the same damn thing.... he fell down so low and they couldn't trade for him1!! mother fer

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Yeah B85, our head office is such a sad bunch. Pisses me off. We'll just wait to pick up the scraps in the mid 3rd round and then expect them to start right away and plug our biggest gap on D... the guy that needs to be a D leader.

Right. So we're all fucking set there. Fuck.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Who the fuck is left MB.. who would give up to get in the draft now? Like you said.. get ready to nibble on a bone.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    Golden Tate is still avaiable..

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

FUCK That.. he went to the Seahawks

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

I was thinking, ok JA, any time now, pull the trigger and when San Fran picked I just knew it would be Mays MB.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

What pick do we have? 75th? Whose left?

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Gotta love it. Listening to Tim Ryan on Sirius and he just said the Bears are gonna be joining the party soon with thier first pick of the draft. Our fearless leaders are such bozo's.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Is Major Wright any good? Is he a fs?

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

It just doesn't make any sense. Why would they throw 1st and 2nd round picks all over the place and all of a sudden they won't trade up? Very dissapointing.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    Major Wright!!!

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

And the Bears select.................Major Wright. FS

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

mother fucker, we sat around and the packers stole Burnett right out from under us and I guarantee he is going to be making plays against us. Good thing we picked up a great QB in the first round already with the 11th overall pick of the draft, and he already knocked out that tuff rookie year stuff last year.

The Packers only moved up for the sole purpose to steal him from us.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

welcome to the Bearssssssssssssssssssssss Major Wright. fuck you Rocawearsky, Pack will choke again this year! Super Bears Super Bowl.

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Burnett would hev been nice though..

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

    huge bargain

  • In reply to Bears85Sweetness23:

Im sorry, but I just dont think that this guy is going to be any better than what we have on the roster already, I had more hope in Burnett and he is also two inches taller, we have another under six footer in the DB camp and it's bullshit. They needed to make a small move to ensure we got burnett I just know this guy is going to be on plays of the week vs the Bears this year. Fuck it! This was the most depressing draft ever. Major Wright is going to turn out to be another Major wrong on behalf of JA and company.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

And the Vikings chose: WOW!!! WOW!!!

Glad they fucking traded up to get a damn stud. Jebus christo.

  • In reply to MASOCHR:

Are we going to do fucking anything in this draft? Anything at all? Can we please trade Olsen for NE's pick right now. please?

  • In reply to ImissButkus:

8 years is the proper time to pass final judgment on a draft. With that said - let's take a look at 2002:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_NFL_Draft

Roosevelt fucking Williams and Columbo. That didn't work out so well...

But, honestly, how many of those names in the 2nd round do you know? Half?

Nice to see we could have had Brian Westbrook instead of Roosevelt fucking Williams.

  • In reply to FQD1911:

Finely balanced in the NFC North or what? If the Queens don't get Favre back they could be 4th!

  • In reply to FQD1911:

You lnow Jerry, won't trade up unless he's getting Marilyn Monroe.

  • Suh going to the Lions just put me back up there, how do we propose to stop him? Kreutz Achilles is gone. Who's our backup center, Beekman? He's our LG. I like Roberto but he's getting on. So we've got a shadow of Kreutz at center, his backup at LG and Father Time at RG .. to stop Superman?

... and Jerry's mouth keeps on opening....

"Prototypically in a safety, you want about 5-11 to 205 pounds."
    - Oh God no, he doesn't even know what he's looking for.

"On whether Greg Olsen fits in the new offense: "Even if he were a square peg in a round hole, he's still quality football player. There are square pegs in round holes for teams, but you don't want to miss the forest for the trees; the guy is a good football player."

    - He doesn't even know what a good football player is. God, are you serious? What did we do to deserve this oh Lord?

  • Exactly, man. If in doubt, what would Wally do...cos that's how we roll ..

  • +1

  • He's already pocketed something like $23 million of Snyder's money (in one year). His contract is not prohibitive at this point. The Titans didn't want to pay a huge bonus to keep him.

  • Doc,

If the fucking queens get Taylor Mays I will NOT be happy. Damn it man!
